I am not arguing the crafting system is not easy. If you are an avid crafter, I mean a real crafter not someone who just does it for the money. Half of your experience is finding those out of the way deals or recipes. If your just approaching it as."OK this is something I have to do to make gil." Then yes it will seem tedious no matter what. And if gil is your only reason, then there are other ways to make gil such as crafting, gambling at the casino, gathering goods, drops from monsters or guildleves, or doing money battles.
The crafting system being purely player driven let's avid crafters live out their fantasy of possibly becoming tycoons.
He may work at the local gas station in real life, but in FFXIV he can be Donald Trump. When I first began FFXI, I hated crafting I thought of it as something forced upon me to make lots of gil. But then I found there were alternatives to making gil and it wasn't so bad. Then one day I actually started craftiing, and researching recipes. I fell in love with crafts at that point. I never became one of those tycoons. But some friends of mine did. They put alot of hard work into honing their craft and maxing it. I was a little envious of the accomplishment they earned.
Clunkiness UI aside, what is more fun to do?
Work at a factory and fix cars with preset rules and parts from your employer?
Or build a car from the ground up with custom parts you searched and worked on?
\ Well said.
I love snails. I love every kinda snail. I just want to hug them all, but I cant. Cant hug every snail.
If you put into place a serious and intricate crafting/gathering system into a game, make it actually important, then not only do you have a necessary mechanism for social interaction in the game you also end up with meaningful economics, and not just the inflation markets fed by gold farmers in some games.
I find the lack of armor and weapon shops as well as any kind of an auction house disappointing. How are we supposed to gain upgraded weapons or armor if we can't buy them from either armor or clothing shops as well as from weapon shops. I'm not going to go around to every player in the game and look at their stuff just for armor or weapon upgrades. same goes for an auction house what good is not having an auction house? It gives players a way to buy armor, weapons or needed items from other players as well as provides some kind of in game economy. I'm not enitrely sure now i want to play ffxiv if it's lacking in so many areas. example natural hp and mp regen when not in combat ect. Anyway forgive my ranting.
Do what you like , it will be amusing to see yopu fighting in rags. Have a nice day.
Play the game or wear rags , youre choice or even better make your own armor.

There are un-implemented features like mog houses, some of the company dynamics, etc. They have already stated they are looking into a way to search market wards for items and possibly prices or price ranges. It is a fundamental system that works great that they will build on rather than jamming in unfinished and buggy issues. It is just how they do things. They want to create a more personal merchant to customer experience and that is what they will continue to work on. I know its hard to grasp because it isn't 100% in at launch, but if you understand that there are some devs who jam way too much in and fix bugs for years, and some that put in a solid foundation and grow it constantly then maybe it will make more sense.
Not hard to grasp at all, what is amusing is spoon fed players who think Auction Houses add value to a game. They don't the SE implimentation with wards and vendors adds back into the MMOs an area of gameplay that has been disguarded for all the wrong reasons.
The joys of having a full game to play including crafting selling and hawking wares in remote locations , just beautiful.

like, as it stands now, its seriously bad, but if they add chat strings like L2's private shop system, it'll be aight
Whats a chat string and how would it benefit the marketplace? I never played L2 but it loked great and I hear it was deep, if excruciating. :P
simple example, was first pic I could find -
notice the lil text that says "D Crys 660a", say you wanted to sell a shield since they're niche due to glads not starting with one, you'd put shields (price) or something, so if someone was looking for a shield they could see the text instead of having to search every single retainer
how would you be able to filter normal chat? in that case we might as well just not have chat, sure they can say stuff like that but if they're trying to sell something its going to hurt them and if they're not then well I guess they're just stupid so you move on and dont check their retainer either way its one less you have to check
How would you be able to monitor a certain "class" of people putting things like "Suck my ****" ?
Yes you can filter to a degree b u t t h e r e a l w a y s w a y s a r o u n d i t
I think its a great idea. If peple want to get banned they say those things in chat or post it in their bazzaar/retainer chat string, but not many would do it. SE has a strong GM presence

I find your decision to play a beta for any other reason besides testing disapointing
Im so sick of hearing this
People play open beta to see how the game runs on their rig and to test it out, FACE THAT FACT.
Whether or not its meant for that is irrelavent
Its like saying tooth picks are meant to pick in your teeth with but you shouldnt poke somones eye out with it
If people can do it, and they want to do it, they are going to. Noones going to stop them
Im having fun with FFXIV and i will be buying it so dont call me a hater
Another thing that amazes me. If you dont want to read about how peple are complaining about something then DONT READ IT. stay away from those kind of posts or even better stay away from the forums

16 posts, hopefully this is your real account and you dont just save it for when you get hangry. jk hehe
I thought I wrote more in that comment but maybe i didnt. Usually i explain that its their choice if they want to base their opinions of a game off the beta and how it runs and feels to them. Thats all. Thanks for your time friend.

Hey hey, some of us are crafter first type people. I personally like the idea that not every weapon swinging foo out there can/or will take the time to do the complex crafts. It creates a market for people like me who will. If everyone could easily craft all thier own gear then there would be no market for crafted good as everyone would always have everythign they want. You want a nice shiney axe and your dont want to do all thats required to make it yourself, fine, just come see me and we will talk price.
Nicely stated. Too many people have been wowified and have no idea how to even function in a player economy. Good thing there's already a well established ezmode alternative (wow) if they don't like it.
I find your decision to play a beta for any other reason besides testing disapointing. I do not believe that this beta serves that purpose, like some other companies use it for. You do and so your decisions will be based on that assumption and you will not end up playing the game. But ultimately the ff14 community will benefit from the lack of people who expect "everything now!".
Any open beta is a trial, and any dev who doesn't realize this is straight up retarded. Blizzard recognized this and really polished up their open beta, and I still argue to this day that their open beta is one of the single most important reasons they enjoyed such early success.
It's nice to have such high ideals, but they are simply negated by reality.

It sounds good but in practice its a pain in the ass. There are 8 wards. Each one could have 100 + retainers. At least in open beta most of them are selling junk. You could spend hours just looking through them all and not finding anything useful.
Pretty fair observation, and I can see this as an issue. When I think of retainer I think of the automated merchants in swg. However, there were mechanics in swg to deal with this, specifically an absense of retainers from a game city and the location of them in the player housing areas. That forced players to specialize their merchants.
Anyone know if there's any plans in the works for player housing/cities, or will housing be instanced?

Wow's open beta was definately awesome, sporting well over a million people playing the game in a generally stable environment.
And who said I'm leaving this community? You know, you could at least discuss my point without an immediate knee-jerk flame that was way off the mark. See, when people talk about crazy fanbois, you're the kind of person they are talking about. I dealt with idiots like you in Vanguard as well and people like you drive players away with your piss poor attitude.
You're so eager to blast anyone and everyone that you flame when someone isn't even debating against your game....
You so did not play WoW during open beta. Lol... You probably didn't even play at release either.
At what point in time did the general consensus on WoW change from the truth to some idealized fantasy of perfection? I bet you people think there was tons of endgame at release for Warcraft too, don't you?

Why am I even answering your ignorant troll post? God I don't know you freakin idiots make me want to reach through my monitor and throttle your throat.
Two open betas, stress test and general open, no one got past mid thirties, starting zones for alliance well polished, people bitched about horde starting zones. Had a few server stability issues but generally played great. At release end-game Onyxia and MC.
Now shut your ignorant trap.
I literally LOL'd for real reading this stuff about WOW launch. Oh soon how people forget. Wow as very possibly the WORST 'major' MMO release in history (minus Anarchy Online). Do you not remember whole SERVERS going down for DAYS?? LOL. Not being able to loot anything for up to a minute at a time? No real PVP system whatsoever? Rediculous que times not even being able to log in for hours at times??

Are you in open beta?
they seriously need to add chat strings so the player can actually let us know what they're selling
Definitely. Right now it's just a waste of time, trying to browse through the vendors.
Right now you can look through 20 retainers and are lucky if one has something useful.
