    4 words?

    "NEVER"

    "NOOOOOOO"

    "AAAAAGGGHHH"

    "WAAAAAAHHHHH"

Ok, those last two were more like "sounds", but they came from way deep in my soul, so they're like "soul words"  - that's gotta count.

It is being made by possibly the worst company in the industry. What we know for sure is the game is going to released half finished with a ton of bugs. We will have yet another great IP destroyed by an completely incompetent company with a history of horrible games that all failed badly…..

It would be excellent if Cryptic could make a brilliant Neverwinter game.

Sadly the odds of Cryptic making a brilliant game are about the same as a person getting hit by lightning at the same moment they've just purchased a winning lottery ticket from Bigfoot.

I dont like WoW because to me its a pi$$-take out of D&D with its bright blue dragons, oversized eyes, armor and move rip-offs.

Neverwinter is an atmospheric, detailed and quality IP that provokes emotion, suspense and intrigue....  that would not suit Crpytics "lets make everything rounded and brightly coloured" attitude.

I dont normally like to pre-judge things, but at this point in time I can say with confidence that I wont be interested in this bastardisation at all.

Agree 100% - never played WOW because of the cartoony look, won't play this if it is that way, too.

I almost want to write down the name of all the haters in here.  Watch how much time each and every one of them spends bashing each article that comes out about this game.  Then, watch as the game goes to Beta, and they bash it again (yet somehow are playing Beta).  Then, watch the release, where they further still bash it; explaining how the city's not big enough, the gameplay is off, etc.  Yet, they're playing.

4e rules and the company's "somewhat new" take on an mmo might (and hopefully will) work.  Give them a chance.

Cryptic is being judged for their previous years performance and the similarities to how this game is already being presented.

One can "hope" that somehow things will turn out differently but all cryptic is offering right now is promises and words, which is something the graveyard of mmos is littered with.

Talk is cheap, hope is blind.  What cryptic needs to do is shut up and deliver.  I would prefer not to hear them talk about the game until an nice long and open beta where players can speak freely about the truth of cryptic learning their lesson or not.

I heard similar things from CO and STO fans before (and from oh so many other games). You probably think you're being unique here, but you really aren't. There will always be fanboys, it doesn't matter what is in question. It also doesn't matter how bad the thing they were cheering for turns out, some will remain the same way. Some of them will understand what is wrong after a while (like Superchum and Jedidethefreak from STO boards), some just feel their life meaning is to lick cryptics boots and spin as much as possible (like Darren_Kitlor from STO boards).

Cryptic just put a 15 dollar ship in their C-Store for STO (one that you could say PAY-TO-WIN item, because of it's uniqueness), and are about to put in another one for 15 dollars (same thing). They talk all high about changing their philosophy, but yet still go on with the old road that is charging for every single thing imaginable while still having a monthly sub.

Having any hope for this company is like believing you will win the next lottery.

If you wanna write my name down, then please do.

From the interview with Jack Emmert:

"And we looked around at MMO companies, and they were struggling. They were spending tens of millions of dollars, and we spent, what, $8 million on City of Heroes and $6 million on City of Villains. Here, we had a game, it was successful, we pumped 'em out, we had the technology, we had the tools, we thought we could be doing it forever, because we were like, "Yeah, we'll just keep making them every 18 months! We can!""

It seems clear from the above quote (and from the rest of the interview) that Emmert thought MMOs were a license to print money.  He as much as admits that his recent games were of substandard quality and that they were more concerned with producing a money-generating product than a really fun game.

I'm not sure I'd want to check out his new game even if it were hand delivered by a '70s era Linda Carter-as-Wonder-Woman with a head full of ecstacy and a raging computer nerd fetish.  Anyone who thinks Mcdonalds-like levels of creativity and quality are appropriate in return for $50 plus $15 a month is little better than a con artist.

While all this hate may be true, I do not understand how it deters from "hoping" the company does well and produces a great game.

How does it benefit gamers to see a MMO puppy mill sucessful? There really is only one reason for gamers to want a company like this not to fall flat on its face over and over again until it's finally dead and doesn't get up again, and that's because we don't like to see our IPs dead in the water alongside them.

Cryptic CAN'T legally call anything D&D an "mmo". What's funny is they're so transparent about it ( even using the SAME shitty CO/STO engine and mechanics ), that they will most likely end up part of the lawsuits anyway.

The only thing Cryptic can do is basically make NWN 3. Except if you think for a minute that Cryptic is going to let you build your own persistant player worlds on your own server, you might as well stop daydreaming now. That's where the "online" comes in, because you'll have to be hooked to their servers to play multiplayer, you know: like an mmo.

But since Cryptic is very adamant NW is NOT being an mmo, I expect we will NOT see this crap added to this site? Correct?

And there lies the real problem the inept and completely wompy Cryptic Engine. Not only is it buggy as hell, but it suffers from odd compatibility problems.

Here is the thought process that went through my head when I first found out that Cryptic is making a NWN game.

    1. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    2. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH...

    3. Oh wait... They are serious?

I know its not MMO but BG2 multiplayer was probably what got me looking for MMORPG's in the first place and I cant say I've ever had as much fun in a game solo, multiplayer or MMO as I did way back when playing this. I gave NWN a chance but it was like having a 2 kids and the first one was always the favourite. DDO is a nice D&D fix for me but even that grew stale... I'm going to go torrent BG while I keep an eye on this one.

I think "No expectations equals no or fewer dissapointments" sums it up for me. Unfortunately this is increasingly becoming my motto in almost all walks of life.

After CO and STO, my vision of Cryptic is that of a modern-day PT Barnum...their catchphrase should be "..there's one born every minute..."

  • DojenDojen Member UncommonPosts: 134

After what Cryptic did with CO and STO I will never buy another one of their games.

It's one thing to be in it for the money, it's another to be in it for the money AND incompetent.

  • roodawgroodawg Member Posts: 10

NWN and NWN2 had awesome player generated persistent worlds on player run servers- with no monthly fee!

No way this game is gonna be like that!

  • GrayGhost79GrayGhost79 Member UncommonPosts: 4,775

You're going to be hard pressed to find people excited or remotely happy about this lol. Most of us knew this was coming but I think many were just hoping this rumor turned out to be nothing more than that. When there was confirmation you could hear the internet sigh collectively.

We are pretty much guaranteed a monthly fee of some kind and a cash shop. Lets not forget this is Cryptic and Atari we are talking about. We are pretty much guaranteed a shallow game that will be rushed through production that plans to bank on it's name alone. Like CO and STO I expect a game that may be fun for a short while (2-3 weeks maybe) that will have some in depth character customization options and content that will be so repetitive and shallow that you will want to beat the devs over the head.

Also this one is pretty much guaranteed to have some severe limitations compared to what people are expecting from a DnD game, especially with 4th edition rules as well as a fair amount of bugs and what not. Cryptic admitted at one point while working on CO after launch that they couldn't fix some stuff due to the engine limitations and they gave an example that actually doesn't bold well for a NW style OMG or w/e they want to call it. They stated that there engine couldn't handle on hit effects :(

my first thoughts ( being an avid fan of both NWN 1 and 2 - excluding SoZ,that is  - and all those two games have to offer  ) when hearing this were :

    - OMG,not Cryptic with their paws on this franchise !!

    - why make another online game  ( and another,and another .... ) ?

Bioware has proven - with DA  and DA II - you can make an ecellent OFFLINE RPG in this day and age if you're just willing to invest your time and effort in it. Why isn't Atari capitalizing on the IP by making a proper sequel to NWN 2 ,including prper toolset for modders ? Why aren't they making Baldur's Gate 3 ? Why do they give these potentially very lucrative IP's to Cryptic to completely ruin them within record-time instead of trying to reach some agreement with Bioware ? We already know this MMO ( because that is what it will be, regardless of what they call it ) will have either a subscription, cash shop or prefrably both . We also know it will use the same "Cryptic engine " as used in STO and CO which will be a total failure .

As far as I'm concerned : D&D in Atari's hands means the franchise is effectively "dead " and we'll see no decent RPG's coming out based on the D&D ruleset   until Atari loses the license again.Fortunately Turbine managed to produce DDO prior to losing the D&D license so that is a minor consolation.

what a sad loss to see the Neverwinter franchise go down the drain like this ....
