Depends on what you want to do. You can gather, craft, level other classes, explore, fish, join a group and explore one of the landmarks or dungeon like areas on your map. Travel to another city and speak with their npc's, etc. Just do whatever you want. BTW what is an occultist? Thaumaturge?
Ah I believe the quest line continues at level class rank 10, and then 20, and then 30, etc. Let me search around the beta forums one sec.
Edit* Yeah talk to the same main quest NPC of your city at Occultist rank 10. Also once the game is live as you reach certain ranks you may want to talk to different NPC's. Some NPC's may mention a famous FF summon and at a certain rank may give you a side quest line to fight it. Things like this existed in FFXI where you basically had to be a certain rank to unlock a side quest or something like this.
The main quest seems to be continued every 10 ranks though.
I will never forgive WoW for dumbing down the MMO genre and its players this badly. The number of people who panic like a chicken without a head when they don't have a quest to lead them by the nose is just disgusting.
The number of people that call hunting monsters without a quest "grinding" is also disgusting. Quests are just as much of a grind, if not MORE so, than hunting monsters. At least while hunting monsters you can explore and socialize and go where YOU want. "I don't like killing the same mob over and over". Then don't! The quest isn't telling you where to go, but you can still move around!
The open-beta is missing a lot of the content the game is suppose to have at launch, but, just like FFXI, the bulk of the game will be done through story line missions until they add a bunch of awesome, long, and intricate side-quest
I have finished the first quest, now I am lvl 9 Occultist / lvl 13 Physical but still don't know what I should do. (Except the 48 hours Guildleve).
Does anyone has a clue?

As for groups, yeah I know people don't play MMOs to socialize or group anymore, but it used to be a pretty fun thing to do. Wander into a dungeon, meet some random people, go deeper into the dungeon with them, form a lasting friendship. Don't need a quest to tell you to go to a dungeon, don't need guildies to take you into the dungeon. You just find people, explore, hunt, talk, laugh, level.
Oh wait I forgot, can't see other people in dungeons anymore in modern MMOs. Good God what happened to MMOs. Usually I can ignore it, but there are some days when I wish someone would just nuke the genre and start over.

Wow offers a variety of ways to advance from PVP, dungeons, grinding, or even questing. Now and then I re sub and try doing it different. Sandboxes need to offer lots of systems and subsystems to play with FF does not seem to have many of these and those it does have really (e.g. crafting) don't seem to be that well implemented. A sandbox needs sand, buckets and spades, toy dumper trucks and preferably no dogdoo. What I do find disgusting is publishers releasing way to early and making demonstrably bad design decisions, that other people are happy running from gold ! to gold ? bothers me not one bit. I do get a little disgusted that people support these publishers rather than sending them a clear message that it is unacceptable.

Yes they are. Only the full story arc isn't. There simply isn't any.
I know I've posted this in other threads, but I'm getting sick of people being mislead. The statement about locked content was made during closed beta. It was unlocked for open beta. All that really meant, was additional areas, with yet more zero content.
Gavron, I do agree about over reliance on instancing and blame EQ as much as WoW .... it introduced some crap mechanics and stripped a lot of what was good in the more sophisticated MUDs.

It seems people in this forum are ready to dive on the sandbox attack thing. Just because I don't want a linear/dumbed down MMO does not mean it has to be a sandbox.
What I truly miss, are virtual worlds. Immersive places that made the community depend on eachother. This was acomplished with and without sandboxes. Socializing used to be the main pull of MMOs, now it seems modern MMOs are truly a "game". A simple game at that, more akin to a time wasting flash game online than a full one.
Yes, instancing and other things killed the true feel of MMOs.

Atleast they give me reason to. THEY'RE EVIL ANGRY BOARS
FF XIV isn't sandbox. Its a linear themepark, that simply lacks content, forcing one to grind.
Having next to nothing to do, does not make a sandbox game. To make a game such, its needs the mechanics so that players can form their own virtual enviroment. All FF XIV has in that area is crafting, which is pretty generic across all types of MMOs (sandbox or not).

You can't really expect ALL people to be entertained by a same single aspect of the game. Especially people who get plenty (sometimes too much) of socialization in real life (I know such thing might be "alien" to you but it does exist) either through in-person communications or through out-of-game phone/webcam/textchat conversations and are simply seeking to get a quiet and relaxing enjoyment out of other aspects of the game (if those aspects actually exist in it).

Did you not play FFXI? The majority of FFXI wasn't "unlocked" until you did story line missions because most of the game was story arc (minus the bonus stuff added later)

Thaumaturge, yes sorry for the bad translation.
I am doing the gathering / Crafting quests and such... But I was wondering if there is another main quest and how/when to trigger it

In response to the OP:
Switch jobs, run around and kill stuff.
Craft, gather, etc.
Figure out what the hell a puk wing +2 is good for.
Gather information so you can control the pricing when the game goes live...
Plot to take over the world.
Roll a new character in each starter zone, because the intro movies are the best part of the game.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
