"Hello person posting on a site specifically for MMO's in a thread on a sub forum specifically for a particular game talking about meta features and making comparisons to other titles in the genre, and their meta features.
Personally, i didnt like the game. It took me too long to get it set up to the point where it was playable with my 360 Controller. Then the combat was sluggish and very unintuitive. The game took upwards of a minute to load up NPC's and PC's in the populated areas (i have a very high end rig with a very decent internet connection, so it wasnt on my end). Overall was a horrible first 3 hours of game play and I havent been able to force myself back in. Just the idea of having to deal with the patcher alone makes me not want to do it.
I can understand why people like the game. But all of you that like it really need to realize that the large portion of people who try the game dont. They arent all here complaining about the game just cause tehy like to do that (ok, maybe some of them are) but they cant all be wrong. The game has some serious flaws and unfortunately in an MMO world you only have one chance to make your first impression. I'm sure the game will do well mainly because of the hardcore fans that are willing to find workarounds or simply put up with the games design flaws. And im happy for that, I hope the game does succeed. But it does not have what it takes to succeed in the Western market.
I hope those of you that stay enjoy the game, and I hope those of you that dont can do it with some dignity and not bash someone elses play style. This game simply isnt what most of us are looking for in an MMO in the year 2010.
Main quest drys up in about 30 min of gameplay. Then, you can only do 8 quests in 48 hours.
So, about three hours into the game. Then I realized there is no content.
Welcome to beta :bang: This Open-Beta does not let you have access to the entire game
Correction, it does not let you have full access to the story arc. Everything else is there. If they wanted to make it centric to the story arc, with nothing else, then they should have simply made it a single player game.
Oh still here trolling the FF forums for somthing you are clearly not interested in.
Again I ask you to prove evidence of your point you make????
(is it possible to report a troller of ever forum this kind of unsustantiated attitude?)
By the way trolling isn't stating something that's true, and you just not happening to like it. I am interested in the deveopment of this game as I've been in it since closed beta 2. It not mine or other's fault SE aren't bother if they put out a POS.
It was posted in closed beta that content was being held back, they unlocked it other than for the full story arc for open beta.
We are less than two weeks from launch. You seriously believe there's heaps of content just being hidden?
Yes I do, I take SE word over the negativity on these forums anyday. The 6gb we are mising can not possibly just be the Arc. But I guess we will see in a couple of weeks. But SE are the masters of content and I am quite sure they have a internal team specifically for testing questlines and such, there track record with FFs is phenomenal. Speak to some non-generic named NPC's and you will find that what they are saying is like offering a quest, but alas none is given....for now.

LOL, its not missing 6Gb of content. Its the (additional) recommended space needed for the install, plus the complete story arc, which is likely to lead into other unseen areas. A new area with no content, is just another place to grind. Its exactly the same as the unlock between closed and open beta, in that respect.
Anyway, good luck with the miracle patch, as they are vapourware.
The fallacy of this arguement; if you played only a short while people will claim you didn't give it a chance, however, if you play it long enough I would argue you found some parts fun.
Why would anyone play a game that isn't fun? I don't understand that arguement. Are some people so pathetic and addicted they continue to play until some arbitrary level?
I say quit a game as soon as you stop liking it. What is the opinion of the people who claim you have to play "until a certain goal as been reached"?
guildleves are on a 24 hour cooldown, but you wouldn't know this because you didn't play the game.
Wrong, 48 hours is correct; however it's server time so if you completed the leves just before a reset you can do them immediately afterwards.
It resets between 9PM-10PM EST every 2 days. 48 hours.
So getting a whole new set of guildleves every day = 48 hours? Then i must be bugged. What an awesome bug.
Come on, use common sense. I just told you that it's on server time right? Well there have been rollbacks and server resets, which will reset the cooldown on guildleves. That's how you are getting them more frequently. If the servers were up steadily and a new patch wasn't introduced like in beta phase 3, you'll see that is in fact a 48 hour timer resetting on a specific time.
You could also pick up and complete 8 leve quests (battle/harvest) and 8 local leves (craft) right before the reset, and complete them, wait for the reset, and pick another set of 8 each. So it could seem like it was everyday if the you took and completed the leves on a Tuesday at 8PM EST when a reset occured on Tuesday at 10PM EST, then come back and pick up leves the next day at Wednesday 3PM EST that might easily confuse someone into thinking the leve cooldown timer is just shorter, but the cooldown timer isn't saved on your character, it's global for everyone.
Requesting resource... .. .
Does anybody have material or a link to how it will actually work? Meaning, formal Square documentation. Heh, no one I know including myself has access to beta forums anymore even though we were closed beta participants.
A big problem with all the mystery Square wants is A - no one really knows and B - we all assume to hell and back the way it works.
I have twice experienced Guild leve resets in what seemed like a day in between (during OB), but did not actually pay attention to how much time, just seemed faster then Beta 3. Maybe you're right about rollbacks affecting it. But... you are playing he said/she said without a Square doc.
Also, why would they pick a server based clock and not individual? I am starting to think their most vocal PM's were way too paranoid about haxors, and that drove all game design decisions. The UX PM must have been more tender than Piglet.
We've determined it through testing in Closed Beta Phase 3 (me and a few members of my linkshell). It remained similar (discounting rollbacks and server restarts) in OB too, that the leves reset at a specific time anyway. While it could still possibly be coincidence that it happened, it's highly unlikely. We even had someone take and complete 8 regional leves at 8PM EST on a reset day and they were able to complete 8 more at 10PM EST (server did not go down in between then). We were regularly using the system to be selective about what guildleves we take till the last minute to improve our chances of getting gear (Note: Guildleves and their rewards also rerandomize every 2 hours).
When you think about it, it's more beneficial to have it on a server based cooldown. This benefits players (especially casuals who can only play on the weekends) more. If you find yourself only able to play on the weekend, instead of only being able to do a gaurenteed one or two leves the leve system may start late Friday when you start playing and reset quickly for you, allowing you to complete an extra set that week. Instead of it being a set 48 hours reset, it's any time at or under 48 hours when you start for the week. If you play constantly this won't have much of an effect on you, but it benefits for someone who plays in small bursts of time.
I can't provide you a direct source from SE themselves, but you can check information about leve reset timers on the beta feedback forums or various other sources (check FFXIVcore forums for instance). Most agree the timer is 48 hours. I'm unsure if SE stated this as a fact or not so you can disregard what I say if you want, but many testers agree the timer is 48 hours.
The game IMHO is boring due to the lack of content and grinding. It reminds me of Aion. Not to mention the very poor interface / controls. The lack of content / grinding is why I quit Aion though to give Aion credit the first 20 levels were a lot of fun.
To the OP: I played until level 9 on two different characters.
Theres roughly 7+gb of content missing, the total game size is about 16 gb, the current beta has about 8-9. There are supposed to be 8 leves per camp, not the current 4.
LOL, its not missing 6Gb of content. Its the (additional) recommended space needed for the install, plus the complete story arc, which is likely to lead into other unseen areas. No its required 15GB INSTALL ; 6GB DOWNLOAD
And I find myself wondering why in the Square folders, all the direcory structures are there, but half of them have no content/files even though they are following the same naming convention of others that do have content. Why would they create several hundred folders with nothing in them?
Its obvious to anyone anyone with a bit of pc knowledge that things are missing.
Looking at the CutScenes files, they have divided hem up into classes, they are quite small 10mb tops for each, as they are graphically rendering them, not like a cut scene you will find elsewhere that is one prerendered clip of huge size. (Infact the largest files that there are in the entire Square folder ARE 45MB, 33MB AND 16MB) So the missing size being the Cutscenes is utter rubbish.
And you can check for yourselves, this is FACT!
Anyway, good luck with the miracle patch, as they are vapourware.

So what exactly are peopel suppsoed to decide whether they are gonna buy this game at launch ro Pre-order on exactly?Promises of rainbows and lollipops?Perceived potential that may never be realized?Blidn faith and unicorns?or maybe what they can actually experience and form opinions on?
Now I'm not saying judge the whole game on open beta but you can certainly judge whther you tihnk the game is fun enough for you personally to take a chance on pre-ordering and trying at launch. You can decide whether you like the presentation and controls and even the combat and crafting systems to a degree,if your not finding them fun now then your unlikely to find even more of it fun later.
For those of us that did find the game in beta equal parts fun and not we are waiting for reviews of the whole game or a free trial to make our final minds up because the open beta didn't show us enough to make a decision.

I care less about FFIV than the 5th pimple on my buttocks, but your statement is just ridiculous.
1. You have never tried a game and didn't like it at first, but plugged along for a bit to see if it get's better (and it did)?
2. You have never met a girl that you didn't like at first, but after spending more time with her, you thought she was rad?
3. You have never watched a movie and the beginning blows, but you keep watching it anyway and it got good?
4. I mean, you have never done anything that you didn't like at first, but by sticking with it, it was good for you?
Sometimes you are wrong, especially when you make snap judgments. I'm not saying that is absolutely true with FFIV, but it is decidedly not unreasonable to make that claim.
When eating a crap pie, one must eat all of the pie and lick the plate after before deciding you do not like the taste of crap. Otherwise, your opinion is not valid and you did not give the crap a fair chance.
When eating a crap pie, one must eat all of the pie and lick the plate after before deciding you do not like the taste of crap. Otherwise, your opinion is not valid and you did not give the crap a fair chance.
No, but if you eat a crappy pie, you cannot automatically assume that all other pies in the world are crappy. An apple pie does not taste exactly like a strawberry pie, no matter how much you want to generalize.
Ok, so I actually read every post in this thread, and I have noticed one important trend to them all. Its not the time people spend playing or the level they achieved, its what they did while they played that appears to be the deciding factor for them not liking the game.
The ones who call it a grind because they dont know what to do if they dont have specific instructions (quests) pointing them towards every action, they hate this game.
The ones who feel the UI is slow, laggy, or unresponsive, they too hate this game.
The ones who feel the combat is slow, laggy, and again unresponsive, they hate this game as well.
The people who do NOT have lag issues, they like this game. (note: lag may actually be there for some of these people, they just dont see it as a big enough issue that it effects thier gameplay)
The people who dont require instructions (quests) to tell them what to do at every moment, they like this game.
The peope who enjoy exploring and learning a new world, they love this game.
All of the above are true statements no matter the amount of time played or level attained. So what does it all mean, well I'ld venture to say if you fall into one of the above categories, your outcome will most likely be the same as everyone else here.
EDIT: Oh and to answer the OP - 7 characters now, each of them over physical level 12 and at least 2 classes over level 8 on each (I delete and rebuild to try new classes and builds - using open beta to refine what I want to start out as once it goes live). All 3 starting areas and surrounding zones. Learning the crafting side now, found tons of hiden places, and still loving every bit of it.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

Oh I love apple pie. I love pear pie too, and lemon marengue and peach pie and berry pie.
Now, I've had crap pie before. I don't need to eat the whole pie to be reminded what crap tastes like.
This game is pockets of fun, then pockets of frustration. I might have been on the verge of a pocket of fun when I gave up, ya never know! I played until physical level 9 on three different toons (to check out the different areas). Who knows, maybe ill log on once or twice more.
5 minutes into the game:
1) I am fumbling with poor controls and a super button/click happy menu system that is trying to achieve minimalist (and failing)
2) I am in an instanced version of a gigantic city with absolutely no direction, simply, "find somebody to talk to". Awesome! Walking in any direction but the right direction will place you right back where you entered the instance. Nice...Hate to say it, but at this point, the game could have just skipped this step with a cutscene...Isnt this Final Fantasy?
Other frustrating aspects included "switching on the fly" (has anybody tested switching from mining to lancer yet?, because i could not switch even after entering passive mode and unequipping my offhand. I could only get it done in a town or city). Doors may open by simply walking up to them OR you may a tiny white shaking icon on the top of the screen in which you must access the main (HOME) menu and then select "Door", OR they may not open at all. Not a problem until you get a quest in a big city that says shite like "Just go down the stairs from the corridor next to where you just were, he might be in there". The map system is accurate, but generally horrible if you have a long distance to travel and are unsure of general direciton. Many translation errors and problems still exist within quest text. Terrible system messages like, "That action cannot be performed" Great....why not? A little more detail would go a long way. What do stats do specifically? Thats pretty important to know as the game gives you stat points each level.
In addition, I just don't see what the big deal is about Guildleves. They are quests, and from what I saw, no different from any other game except that you are limited in how many you can do and generally they are a pain in the ass to get. For the sake of this game, I sincerely hope the overall story arc HAS been removed for Beta.
Positives are the graphics, which ran amazingly well on my laptop, despite an atrocious score on their tests. Mining was actually fun, a mini-game all in itself. What I did see of cutscenes was very well done, but where's the audio? NPC animations alone just don't quite cut it.
I'll be back after after release to check up on FFXIV, but my feeling is this game is an xpack away from good.
The UI makes it hard to even find where to do that main story quests. Once you do them the quests seem to go away and you can't find any more, even then the quests were "kill 10 of these and run back" lol. Like frigging these are quests from pre 2004. Also the UI is horribe, so based on controllers and not mouse and keyboard.
The races all look like they were designed for little girls.
The combat is so slow and boring, there aren't any cool downs or anything to make sense of what you're doing... again console focused.
No PVP
Grinddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd
Small world
Most of the zones are like corridors and cause there is no jump the open ones are so limited.
Probably one of the worst MMOs I've played, I would rather play the NGE SWG *shudders*.
About 10 hours. Tried all 3 cities and completed several times the main quests & some leves.
I like for a game to be easy to learn, difficult to master. This game however just seems to be difficult in both.
My overal feeling is: I am lost. Lost in a world that doesn't give me the vibe to explore it. There are games that don't hold your hand however there is that little "spark of joy" that pushes you always further into learning & exploration. This game doesn't.
Simply due to the bad UI (I am not lagging and I use the miracle patch for the hardware mouse), but having to redefine my keyboard each time I log in as well as a menu system for interaction makes it cumbersome to use. I know others aren't bothered by the menu but with the current MMOs on the market with pop-ups & toolbars, a menu-system feels like going back from PS3 to Vectrex.
Due to the fact that fishing for information in FFXIV is rather tedious instead of enjoyable (I work full-time and got only a couple of hours to play a day therefore spending my available time trying to find a quest/mission/npc allowing me to get further into the game isn't my idea of fun).
Due to the fact that the world feels like a maze (just like Aion and unlike Vanguard where exploration has found its true meaning). I don't mind being unable to jump however being unable to go down a hill or even a cliff totally bothers me. It makes the world feel artificial.
Combat system: I usually play casters and I found the combat system not really appealing and slow => always some delay between the click & action - perhaps due to beta but I doubt it since it's coming from FF with turn-based combat (also I use mouse & keyboard and the camera controls & targeting is just a pain - it makes me feel dizzy).
Apparent lack of content: we know it's OB but having gone through quite a few beta's I've never seen that "miracle patch" between Open Beta and Launch (I might be wrong this time though).
This game will certainly appeal to the former FFXI players (SE's targeted audience) and a few others.
As for me I would certainly refuse to pay a monthly fee for a game restricting the levelling speed (= fatigue system i.e. 8h/Week full xp, then half for another 7 hours, then no xp for that class - you'll need to switch class to xp again).
Last thing I learned from beta's: always wait for a few months for a game to fully settle before playing it.
Long thread. I read all of it and I have a few things to say:
I live in Japan and what you must realize is the Japanese PC gaming community is almost non-existent. Nobody has the space for a huge desktop PC - thus SE naturally focuses on console titles. (The Japanese version is no different from US)
Kudo's to SE for trying to expand their audience, but I think they are over-extending their market presence. Considering the inevitable critical pounding they are going to take, I don't think it was worth it.
Putting all their eggs in the PS3 basket might have been too narrow-minded or safe, but they will soon realize the only market for this game will be for the PS3 gamers.
Agree with me or not, but it is naive to think your average PC gamer will stick with this title very long if at all. (SWTOR, f2p LOTR, WoW Cata, etc.)
Considering the PS3 version is not out until next year, I think they are just using the PC market to get a better sense of how to mold and manipulate their actual product, the PS3 version.
btw, to keep it on topic :P I played the Japanese version a little in a PC cafe here (no way my laptop can run it) for a couple hours. Just like most Japanese people do Unless you are 1000% die-hard FF fan, you will be playing this on a PS3.
Your logic is obscure to say the least anyway he said crap pie not crappy pie. If it looks like crap and smells like crap and even tastes like crap then you don't need to guzzle down the whole pie to work out it is filled with crap. Even if there are some juicy chunks of meat at the bottom of the pie personally I would not want to eat shit to get to them especially when there are pies that are delicious from the first mouthful. There are some pies being baked that if there ingredient lists are accurate sound rather tasty.
Edit: If FFXIV was pie it would be one with hardly any filling and that that there is would be uncooked and not particularly tasty. Lets hop that by release it is choc full of succulent filling, can't see it in the few days they have but can hope.
I really laughed reading the last posts, the reference of the "Vectrex" is great, (didn't know that some players were as old as me to remember this haha).
I think that "almost" everyone is agree with this : The game has no content right now but we all hope that something magic will happen the 20th of Septembre. BTW, I belong to these dreamers too, I'd love to play FFXIV if they add contents, but don't count on me for paying the development up to the release date of the PS3 version.
It will be a stripped down game at launch that can be built on constantly by the devs. If you don't want to experience the early growing pains just like with every MMORPG then simply wait.
It is better to have a solid core game like this at launch where the devs can constantly build upon it rather than a game with tons of features crammed in but broken where the devs can only try to fix bugs and in some cases never get the features working correctly or as promised. (Sieges in AoC)
It won't hurt you to wait a while. Maybe a different game will come out and you will skip FFXIV altogether and in a year you will have a lull and give it a fair shot as a released game with updates. Who knows~
I played one toon until 6armorer, 4goldsmith, 7 or 8 miner, and level 9.
This game has way to much added wasted time for no apparant reason. Taking 30seconds just to go craft a second thing is a waste of time. Not only do I have to click through 7 more menus, its just absurd. Things like that won't change at launch, and may not ever.
Crafting I can understand, and figure once everyone gets it down, it'll be easy as making a banana cream pie.
Combat although I only killed about 10 things and never ranked up my marauder, I had no feelings on it either way, just a different way.
Make a few things more "adult" I don't have a bazillion hours to waste on clicking time friendly and I'd purchase it. Unfortunately it seems SE is stalling players for some unknown reason(could be good could be bad) with little added timesinks that are disguised in a cleaver manner. The 6 people I knew in real life all felt the same general way about the game after we had a chat and decided not to get it due to basically these time sinks.
I'm sure there is a better way to add timesinks than blatant "user account control" ingame. Are you sure? Yes or No? Do you want to continue Yes or No? A little bit to much for my taste.
Edit: Like ProfRed said above me, I am my friends aren't going to be their at launch, we are going to wait and see if it progresses to a point we feel we can plunge in. Either your onboard and feel the product is going to be what you wanted and are willing to wait out the 3-6months period, or your on the fence and want to wait a few until the game has its bearings straight.
Main quest drys up in about 30 min of gameplay. Then, you can only do 8 quests in 48 hours. So, about three hours into the game. Then I realized there is no content.

Its open beta, get over it.
Core i5 13600KF, BeQuiet Pure Loop FX 360, 32gb DDR5-6000 XPG, WD SN850 NVMe ,PNY 3090 XLR8, Asus Prime Z790-A, Lian-Li O11 PCMR case (limited ed 1045/2000), 32" LG Ultragear 4k Monitor, Logitech G560 LightSync Sound, Razer Deathadder V2 and Razer Blackwidow V3 Keyboard
Go back to WoW! LOLOLOLOLZ
About an hour.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Welcome to beta :bang: This Open-Beta does not let you have access to the entire game
Correction, it does not let you have full access to the story arc. Everything else is there. If they wanted to make it centric to the story arc, with nothing else, then they should have simply made it a single player game.
