Congratulating SE for fooling so many.

Game will crash if alt tabbed in fullscreen mode.

No hardware mouse.

Game freezes shortly while crafting, every new session/item.

Navigating menus and doing things as common as changing/adding skills takes longer than it should due to unresponsive UI.

These are the problems I encounted within the first hour of playing FFXIV to name a few.  I am not here to talk about lack of content or guildleves or any of that stuff that does not matter.  FFXIV is not a finished product and if you want a clear beyond a reasonable doubt reason that it is not, then I will simply ask.... why is the PS3 version not being release?  It is well known that SE is not aiming for the PC market and so there is no reason for them to have finished the PC version before they finished the PS3 version of their game.  FFXIV will be finish when SE releases the PS3 version of FFXIV.

Open beta? Stress test? Did they really need thousands to log on to tell them "your UI is laggy", "why is my mouse slug ish?", "SE you know we can't alt tab in full screen mode?".  There is now less than 2 weeks before early start hits and people will be marveled by SE 'hidden' content that was not in any beta.  Now I ask you this.  Do you think the QA team at SE tested none of the content we see in OB? Do you think the QA team has done a better job at making the content we haven't seen, more polished than what we are currently shown?  It scares me to think of the butchered walls of text that will be in these storyline arcs and other quests and not even mentioning more serious issues with their  hidden content.

But, dispite all these glaring signs of pending doom.. SE still has a strong  army of players defending this product and calling it great.   So congrats SE... my hats off to you.

When will you guys learn not to have high hopes from MMOS these days? never every pre order a MMORPG and always wait for good 6 months to 1 year. I cancelled my pre order after playing OB. I have learned my lesson. I will check back in a year or so. 50 bucks is a lot for me these days in such harsh economic times.

Once you play as many mmos as I have you realize that things like this are pretty standard for 99.9% of all mmo beta/launches.  FF14 might have a few more bugs than normal, but its pretty well made class/crafting/gameplay system (conceptually, i.e. without any bugs) makes up for it imo.

If you havn't noticed, almost nothing that people are complaining about are related to gameplay, except for maybe lack of quests, but rather everything people complain about are related to bugs or UI.  This means that once these bugs are sorted out, the game will actually be quite good compared to most mmos.

I'm sorry FFXIV didn't meet your expectations.  But arn't you being a drama queen over it?  I dont' know ifyou placed a pre-order, but Amazon allows you to cancel the order.  By having an open beta, you actually get a chance to try out the game, or what parts have been chosen for a trial before committing.

Other than the fact that FFXIV didn't turn out to be what YOU wanted it to be, what exactly were you fooled into?  You just realized the game wasn't for you without having to spend a single dime.  SE is not obligated to make a game that meets your expectations.  If they havn't, then move on.

Conversely, I didn't go into FFXIV expecting this or that.  I was excited about the game since I loved FFXI.  After Open Beta, I've reaffirmed my decsion to keep my pre-order and I've also joined a Linkshell.  We are very active in the OB trying to get as much info as possible before release.  Every night we log on and goof around and have fun.

I happily concede that certain parts of the game are harder than they should be, but other parts are just wonderful (music, combat animation, depth of class combinations, depth of crafting, the art design, the exploration, etc.).

I guess I really don't understand where this hatred is comming from.  IT's like you hyped yourself up and then got disapointed by your own unrealistic and excessive expecations.  Intead of looking inward and saying, "well it wasn't what I expected," you decide to blame SE for not meeting your subjective expectations.

It's actually far simplier than that.  SE (or any other company) makes a game and you decide whether you like it or not.  Why are people making SE Satan all of a sudden because the game isn't what you expected.  I for one, knew it was going to be an updated FFXI cloan.  By updatd, I mean graphic and gameplay.  Of course it wouldn't be content or polish wise because FFXI was in development for 3 years and then 8 years of release (11 years).  FFXIV is a new born baby game.  The foundation is there for it to be as great as FFXI was for most of us.

SE hasn't fooled anyone.  My LS and I are soooo excited about release more than you can realize.  We're fanbois, but we know it has issues, those issues are not as earth shattering as they appear to be for you.

I live in Japan and what you must realize is the Japanese PC gaming community is almost non-existent.  Nobody has the space for a huge desktop PC - thus SE naturally focuses on console titles. (The Japanese version is no different from US)

Kudo's to SE for trying to expand their audience, but I think they are over-extending their market presence.  Considering the inevitable critical pounding they are going to take, I don't think it was worth it.

Putting all their eggs in the PS3 basket might have been too narrow-minded or safe, but they will soon realize the only market for this game will be for the PS3 gamers.

Agree with me or not, but it is naive to think your average PC gamer will stick with this title very long if at all.  (SWTOR, f2p LOTR, WoW Cata, etc.)

Considering the PS3 version is not out until next year, I think they are just using the PC market to get a better sense of how to mold and manipulate their actual product, the PS3 version.

Very interesting.   How are japanese gamers taking to FFXIV?  Do you think it will have the same type of base of players as FFXI?  Or do you think that ship has sailed and FFXIV will have less subscribers than FFXI?

This is one of the most silly things I've read here recently.  I know they sleep in drawers and stuff over there but the Japanese don't PC game due to space, they console game due to the fact console gaming is a bigger draw for them.  In the States PC gaming is bigger.  Beyond that I dont see how sticking a PC/Monitor in the corner is any different than sticking a PS3/Television in the same space....

Just because you "live" there doesn't mean you are one of them or can speak for every Japanese person.   The rubbish on these boards that is passed along as fact is staggering.

based on what he said sounds like he thinks japanese gamers will play it but mainly on ps3.

btw i actually have to give props to SE for having a real OB, something 99% of MMOs dont do anymore.  Contrary to the topic's title, it shows that SE is actually not trying to fool anyone, they are showing people their game and people can buy it or not, they don't want people to waste their money on a game that they don't feel will interest them.

Practically all japanese players played FFXI on the PS3.  Those that played on the PC ended up using a controller anyway.  I didn't even know it could be played on a controller until a Japanese friend mentioned it.

After playing FFXI using keyboard only for an entire year, I switched to controller and never looked back.

The problems you're citing have to do with the game systems, not the content.

The content in FFXI has been tested 100% internally for pretty much all of XI's existence as well. Anyone remember an open beta for Zilart? Chains of Promathia? Aht Urghan? Wings of The Goddess? Any of the 3 Adventure Packs? Abyssea? Nope... no open beta for those. Yet they all launched with little trouble beyond a few bugs that were squashed in short order.

Why? Because their internal testing teams test the *content*... What they've had us testing is the various game systems.

Here, let's take it a step further...

Did anyone beta test the content for FFXII? XIII? VII? IX? VIII? Any of them? Nope. Yet they launched as completed games, with all content intact and working.

    Why?

Because the internal testing team took care of that.

Understand the difference between testing content and testing game systems and it's really quite simple.

Fun fact for you.  Nobody has space for a desktop PC in Japan :P  Laptops and cell phones are basically as good as it gets for a huge majority of the people.  I've lived here for 3 years, I am fluent in Japanese.  Most people who have any interest in PC gaming, go visit their local PC cafe.  PC cafe's also and almost always have, comics to read, billiards and darts, etc.

In Japan, FF14 is promoted of course.  Why not?  But I don't think SE's main target is PC gamers.

SE is a large and competent company.  It knows the American market is different, but again I doubt they are targeting PC gamers.  This evidence is clear when the game plays and feels like a console port.

I thought the combat animations were decent aswell when they actually went off.  About 25-50% of the time the mob would take damage without ever seeing an animation at all.  Add in server lag, UI lag, not being able to manipulate the UI in any sense that would be considered remotely user friendly(it takes between 5-10 seconds to open your inventory, now compound that by 100 or a 1000....what a huge waste of time). Horrible mob/player targeting, horrendous tutorial(oh wait is there one???).

When you log into the game the first time its soooooo overwhelming.  Well I wanna quest...wait how do I do that no npcs have anything to indicate they have a quest for me...I'll just start talking to random npcs....wtf they dont do anything you mean I gotta talk to em all to get a quest...wtf arent there any quests...wtf is a Levequest...ahh a Levequest is a basic quest but how do I get more....ohhhh theres an npc with levequests of various types...  This pretty lame example was me in the first 20-30 minutes of gameplay most of which was me trying to sort out the UI.  If there is any fashion of tutorial players shouldnt have to look for it it should just be there...  Im all for exploring and learning a new world on the fly but this UI just makes it boring and difficult.

Someone with no patience is never going to be able to figure out how to hotkey a skill due to lack of UI functionality and unorthodox setup.

I will say the graphics of the character models and so far the world is top notch but thats about where the good stuff for me ended in this game sad to say.  Hope they can work out their issues, but if they cant get something as simple as the UI functioning correctly/easily then this game will only attract fanbois and people with tons of time to waste.

Honestly, your bitching over problems that CAN and WILL be fixed. Just wait, and try it out in couple months after release. Like everyone said nothing is wrong content wise.

Also about 75% of graphically advanced games have that alt-tab problem. Computers just cant handle that kind of stress and processing.

They didnt fool anyone, you fooled yourself. MMO's are rarely 100% complete at launch, let alone open beta.

it's easy to see, they will release PS3 version when it's complete or 99.99 complete. If you buy a game for console, you know that the game works lol. For the PC version they can release it half-baked because they know many will buy it.

This person is a shining example of an MMORPG player post WOW. I am not saying it as a bad thing. I just merely point out the disctintion in play style.

I remember back in the old day of Everquest. You don't just have to talk to NPC to figure out if they have a quest or not, you will have to actually type the correct question when you talk to the NPC to receive the quest. A current generation of MMORPG players would be so lost in Norrath.

Sign, such a drastic difference in play style.

Why is it that the gaming industry is the only area of the consumer market that can get away with this? Believe it or not, games are a commodity and companies advertise their product to include certain game mechanics, level of graphics and server stability. Since when is it alright for gaming companies to not deliver on their "advertised" product.

When you watch a car commercial and they tell you it comes with this size engine, these tires are standard and this many airbags, aren't you going to be a little disappointed when you go for a test drive and crash the car cause the steering wheel broke off and none of the supposed airbags deployed?

The gaming industry is far too lax in my opinion and we as the gaming community are the reason gaming companies still practice this sloppy production style. If you're happy with FFXIIV as is, thats fine, but don't tell someone who feels lied to that he's wrong in thinking so and to move on to something else. Besides, if your so sure of your games awesomeness, than a few people on some game forum giving negative feedback isn't going to cause any problems.

People have different PCs and different expectations on what is considered "Broken."  For some, lack of pvp and jumping was a "gamebreaker," need I say more?

I can only speak from my own experience.  The game plays great on my medium capable computer (965 BE processor, Win 7, 4 GB, Ati 4890).  For the last two days, I have not crashed once.  I left the game on, took my wife and son shopping, 3 hours later, the game was still running and I was standing exactly where I had left.   My FPS is stable and I have little to no combat lag.  I have little to no UI lag when changing classes or equipping skills.  I do have vendor lag when attempting to sell stuff in my inventory.  This has to be made simpler.

It seems blatantly obvious to me that the people complaining about the UI are people who never really played FFXI for any extended period of time.  The UI is a matter of preference vs. a broken mechanic.  Yeah it's slower than most modern mmos, but guess what, none of the other mmos MUST ALSO be compatible on a console.  It's easy to make PC FFXIV a carbon copy of WoW's interface, but that would give a competitive advantage to PC users.  So what do you get? Something called a compromise, an old Solomon "split the baby in half" solution.  You need to have something that works equally well on console controller as you do on a keyboard.  That is why people hate the UI, not because it sucks, but because it is what it has to be.

FFXIV's biggest audience is japanese console players.  If this doesn't sit well with most western players, then you will see SWTOR, TERA, GW2 on the horizon soon enough.  As for me, I enjoy the current state of the game and can't wait to see how much better FFXIV becomes (as FFXI did).  SE knows that it's doing.  25 years of programming and 8 years of FFXI is all the proof I need.

  • Khaotik29Khaotik29 Member Posts: 4

I actually did play EQ, DAoC, quite a few other early MMOs.  Theres a reason why games like WoW are soo sucessful.  They are accessible.  Meaning you dont necessarily have to invest a huge ammount of time to get an end result of advancement.  Ive been playing MMOS since around 1999/2000 soo Im not a noob when it comes to this stuff.  People that have only played mmos for the last few years are going to expect things be given to them rather than having to work for stuff.  Something as simple as finding npcs for questing shouldnt be hard work the quest itself should be where the work comes in.

Granted this is during an open beta and the noob zones are flooded with people there are far too few mobs to even grind xp on.  Maybe I'm just not grasping the concept of the game but soo far it seems very unfinished.

I think you'll find most are saying there is a great lack of content, and have many a complaint about what so called content is there.   I'm also not sure what games you've been playing if you think a high percentage of modern games can't handle alt-tabbing.  I've not come across a single one, other than FF XI and XIV.

To be honest FF XIV isn't even beta quality.  The best thing they could do is pull launch, and move it back to the PS3 one.

When you bought your version of Windows Vista, you got to take it back and get your money back huh? Or how about your brand new PC that came standard with that wonderful Vista already installed, got to take it back too did ya? You are aware that MMO games are the ONLY ones that even offer an option of Open Beta and a trial prior to buying/renting? Or have you missed that part in your rage?

But see, that's just a difference in philosphy.  There's nothing wrong with expecting people to actually talk to people and read dialogue to learn waht to do.  The problem is when people expect FFXIV to be identical in its presentation.  Who says FFXIV needs to be accessible?  That's just another word for "watered down."  I'm so happy at the way FFXIV is designed.  It fills a big void in the current mmo market.  There are too many WoW clones... we finally get somethign different and people complain.

You are aware that MMO games are the ONLY ones that even offer an option of Open Beta and a trial prior to buying/renting? Or have you missed that part in your rage?

Not true, just betas for single player games are generally by invite only taken from people who have purchased and registered a title by the developer.  I got an invite to Kain and Lynch 2.  Microsoft has betas for all their OS' and some other products.

Also most console games these days, especially on the PS3, have demos well before release available on cover discs or by download.  Given what open betas generally are these days, there's no difference.

Lol you can have your "different"  if this is what you expect from a game.  The truth of the matter is the game just doesnt function well.....Talk about watered down what content are you refering to that fills this game soo well that it could even hope to overshadow its predecessor let alone the games you are saying are watered down.

I was just pointing out the UI needs work wasnt even trying to compare this game to other modern mmos.  I wasn't even pointing out the lack of content, the cumbersome combat and targeting.  Oooohh you mean the Emotes are awesome well then Im sold heres my money...I dont get the appeal if people are defending the current game, but hey people are entitled to like what they will i'll just hope either they fix the current issues or another game will come out soon at put this one to bed.

There's a big cultural divide that people don't seem to understand.  This isn't a western mmo and this isn't a western mmo company.

SE does things a certain way and is making a game for a certain audience.  What SE does works for its target audience (i.e. japanese console mmo market, FF fans,etc.).

I truely believe that OB for SE is more about stress testing than it is about promoting the game.  For a Western game, the opposite would be true.

Just be happy that you got the chance to test the game before making a financial commitment.  Unless you've preordered the CE and you can't get your money back, you've literally LOST nothing.

I guess I should feel shallow or stupid for enjoying the combat?  Should I feel bad about enjoying the graphics, the music? What about the dialogue... should I hate that too?  Should I resent the fact that the crafting has depth to it?  Should I not like the fact that it emphasizes grouping and is generally more difficult than other MMOs?

I give you that to some, the UI is sooo different and laggy that it can be game breaking.  But you also have to accept the fact that isn't the case for a lot of people.  The game plays really well for me on my Xbox controller.  The majority of the issues you sights are CLEARLY fixable.  The fact that you don't like the combat is all I need to know.  You think its broken, I happen to think its fine.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

    I stand corrected.

However, with that being correct, that Microsoft has betas on all thier OS software does that mean all the people that purchased that piece of crap did so knowing it was a piece of crap first? The argument here is that people should be up in arms about MMORPG games that dont deliver 100% complete and functional games prior to being sold to the public. Does that mean this same standard should not apply to other software companies and thier products as well? I contend the same standards are applied accross all product lines in the software industry, but that the 'gamer' customers are more demanding than the others. If Microsoft puts out an OS that is screwed up they provide tech support and updates on a regular basis, much like MMORPGs do now. And both of them do so after the product is sold to the customer. What you dont see, even though people do complain about them all, is a customer base that is outright rude in thier demands as you see from the gaming community customers out there now. 5 years ago you didnt see this kind of stuff, so my question is why do we see it now? Some claim the industry has changed, I say it hasn't, the only change has been the expectations of the gaming customers themselves. The industry hasn't changed its process.
