shockingly bad game

ethionethion Member UncommonPosts: 2,888

I've struggled with this game long enough....  It looks pretty but beyond that goes downhill quickly.

Performance really sucks.  This is shocking since most asian games perform amazing and look amazing.  I have a quad core intel processor running at 2.66ghz, 4gb ram, a GTX 465 with 1gb ram, and win 7 64 bit.  The mouse and most everything initially lagged when I made the window match my resolution.  I tried turning down every option to no avail it would still be laggy.  Finally I got it into full screen and performance was tolerable.  Then I ran into crashing issues.  Beyond that casting spells is difficult, I have to target something, select the spell then I think target it again.  Whatever the issue it is far from fluid and is difficult to play.  There is no global chat or anyway I can see to ask for help.

Maybe I haven't stuck it out long enough but this game is just not fun.  And I haven't really even gotten started in it.

Sounds to me like your opinion of the game being shockingly bad is a tad overblown considering that it seems you can't even run it.  Considering it is playable on my system which is comparable to yours but with a mere GTS 250, there's probably a compatibility issue going on unique to your system for it to perform so badly.  Or, more likely, you're noticing the GUI lag the rest of us have pointed out but haven't adapted to it well enough to actually get to playing the game yet.

Dude... I have a similar PC with a GTX 460 and the game runs as 60FPS for me.

And while I agree with you on the mouse issue (use WindowerXIV to enable hardware mouse) the game runs pretty nice for me. I've posted screenshots earlier today.

Who says they have not fixed the core gameplay issues, and just do not want to release them in the Beta.  They can have beta end and on release look like they did a crapload of stuff in the last 2 days.

Who knows maybe they have; I think that's a horrible idea from a business/marketing standpoint, regardless, I've played this "miracle patch" game too many times. Your argument is always presented, I've even used it, but it never holds up at launch.

Maybe this will be the magical game to break the cycle of crappy launches, and that'd be great for those who will play, but I doubt it.

Letting people in a Beta that think its a free  trial is what is bad for business/marketing.

With as many people that wanted in they should have had some type of higher standards or requirements to actually help with the beta process, and if you do not pull your weight they ban you from the beta.

I agree, but betas have turned into trials somewhere along the way. Regardless, as soon as that NDA is lifted, you have to be prepared to deal with the reprecussions of your flaws being publicized.

Since when is performance issues 'core gameplay'...

I've played hundreds of MMOs, and most of the Final Fantasys, and putting the performance issues aside, I can say FFXIV is a great game with solid gameplay mechanics. Just need to fix the bugs and laggy UI.

Everything about the game can be found online, so I wont go more in depth. but this game definitely has a promising future with what it has to offer as an mmorpg.

Yeah my problem with the game is most definately performance, im on a Quad-SLi GTX 295 Core i7 920@4ghz 6Gb Ram. and it runs terrible perhaps 25-50fps most times. The characters look really good, but the world looks mediocre.

-Also another big problem I have with it is the responsiveness of the combat. Its like im selecting attacks in a turn based rpg. But the timers are all messed up and stuff just happens randomly(in my opinion), when i inflict damage it doesnt seem to register correctly. The animation to hit, the damage numbers, the swing times and death animation timing seems to be completely out of alignment. WAR, WoW, LoTRO, AoC didnt have this problem...

-Repeatable quests(or more quests) with rewards and xp would be much better then, 20% questing 80% grinding.

-Profession based classes are extremely boring to play.......

-The interface is crap, its menu based like a japanese console rpg, its doesnt work for a PC MMO, equiping gear and sorting items should be quick and simple.

-Talking to npcs, its classic japanese rpg right here, you feel alittle locked into conversations, it shouldnt hinder you from quickly buying items and quickly exiting mid conversation especially if theres nothing important to talk about, doing repetitive tasks like buying and selling items is tedious.

I honestly havent explored much into character development or storylines, the core gameplay is whats killing me. It feels like they intend this game to be too much like FF console games.

  • itchmonitchmon Member RarePosts: 1,999

the game works just fine for me, 40 fps near an aetherite and 60 in other places.

as for whether it's a shockingly bad game, i'd say no.  I do have some issues with SqEnix's consolish UI.  I also feel that they are overall an arrogant minded game company.  I enjoy the game, even the slower-than-(u know which game) pacing.  i wasnt blown apart by the game in beta ut it's good enough for ff fans and possibly older-school mmo fans to buy and i'm glad i have it preordered.

The exp system, stat reallocation system, etc etc. are what I was referring to.

It has promise, just like all of the AAA MMOs that have flopped on launch in the past few years. I really do hope for it to be a good game, but I know better than to rely on that hope.

So... What you're saying then, is Square Enix made a Final Fantasy game... that feels like the rest of the series?  That's dispicable.

For all the issues I have with FFXIV none of them are "it's too Final Fantasy-ish".

Certainly a new one in my book.

Thats not what i'm saying at all, the UI is bad, and they resemble FF console games. I'm curious to the reason, wether they intended for it to feel like 'classic final fantasy' rather then making a more mouse/keyboard friendly interface. I think in many peoples opinions they could have made a much better UI.

Are you serious? 25-50FPS is bad? Half of the people playing this game would kill to have your "bad" FPS. I mean, the game has a 60fps limiter on and you can't tell the difference between 50 and 60 fps. Most of the time you can't even tell the difference between 30 and 60FPS.

Just recently I was running this game on a 9800GT, barelly pushing 20FPS and it was perfectly playable. I can understand your other issues, and I share them but 25-50FPS is great.

It's at times like these that I sit and repeat my MMO gaming mantra:

"Never, but never, ever subscribe to a brand new MMO; give it 10 months and let others pay to be post-beta testers."

I hate to say it, but I think a majority of players are going to get this initial impression.

You really have to try hard to want to play this game.

That won't stop some people from doing so, but at the same time, all I can say is good luck with it :P

From my understanding, this game isn't very twitch based, so I'm guessing a 15-30FPS is perfectly playable. It just won't be pretty to the eyes =P. Unfortunately I can't even get the game to start up in Full Screen mode without a black screen, so I won't ever know what my FPS will be :D

He is wondering why this console title was even considered for the PC.

Exp system? Seems fine to me. Surplus? if you mean surplus exp then please read more about it. Whats wrong with stat reallocation?... it takes over an hour to reallocate all of your stat points, so you cant instantly switch from DoW to DoM.  Players being able to level every class is a great mechanic imho.

In my list of hundreds of mmos, I've played WoW, WAR and Aion as well. WAR lasted 3 months then I just got bored. Aion lasted me 10 months. These games only flopped because people gave up too soon. People made excuses to quit just like they're doing for FFXIV. WAR after merges had great sieges, really fun. Conquering all of the instances was a great challenge as well. Most people quit before beating them. Aion was a great journey to get full +10 level 50 abyss armor. In total I killed over 22,000 people to get the required abyss points. Killing and perfecting Dark Poeta's Tahabata boss was a big challenge as well. Took many tries and lots of practice. That stuff, the community, and just plain role play value, is what makes an MMO an MMO. People forgot how to play mmos. I have great memories for every MMO I've played. They all offered a challenging experience I was able to share with others online. I really just think people forgot how to play mmo's. They expect too much and want everything in a single game.

  • unbrokenunbroken Member Posts: 57

Most people who play mmos today seem to be narcissistic, expecting entitlements, and wanting games to work exactly to their tastes.  The problem is that it will never happen that way.  I don't think an mmorpg that caters to the things that all players want will never exist, because certain "desirable aspects" will inevitably take away from other "desirable aspects."  That's why I think games need to stick with what their good at (i.e PVE vs PVP, or instant reward vs grind) and stick with it.  I hope FFXIV doesn't try too hard to cater to everyone, because I think they'll end up alienating most, if they do.

Same here I really hope they fix the crash issue , cause the game crashed 2 time in a row on my levquest ^^ , and some other time I can play hours without any crash. Windows7  64bit / 8 gig ram / 5870 ATI radeon / core I7 860  @ 3,6

I wonder why they made it that the levquest cancel when you crash or have internet problems.

You must not have the right PSU or your just lying..   I have one 295, i7 920 and I run at 50-60 fps at 1920x1200 with vista 64 and all the available graphic enhancements maxed... if you wanna call it maxed because of the limited options.
