Turbine really screwed the pooch on this one. Gotta feeling a lot of people will react this way. Been sitting at examine programs for a hour now, if I was a  monthly subscriber I would be mad as hell too.

The game is probably better off without you if you make such drastic decisions the 1st week of the new game.

They did a great job witgh F2P D&D which re-vived that game and made it better than ever, you need to have patience, go play another game and wait a week maybe?

If you can't do that, really the game is better off without you.

    GAME TIL YOU DIE!!!!

You are absolutely right.  The game is better off without me and I am better off without the game.  Enjoy your wait times and screwed up Turbine site.  This should have been ironed out way before it went live.  They didnt do their homework.

I dont care how great the game is and it is, I am not sitting around for 20+ minutes waiting to play.  Enjoy your your screen staring to get in.

Many felt there should have been seperate servers for the F2P folks. Turbine didnt want that and while we will never know how many sub payers left the game there was  more than a few of us. I even know of one lifer who left due to the F2P move. In each instance those of us who left were accused of knee jerk (took me three weeks to decide) decisions and were told the game was better off without us so take what the cheerleaders say with a grain of salt.

WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

been talking about this with a friend who is a netwrok eng and he seems to feel that since the same thing is happening to DDO that there is a problem with the network infrastructure and the only way to stop it is to shut the system down, but the only way to diagnose it is keep the servers up and teh only it would fail is when it is overloaded, therefore it cannot be troubleshot during downtime. Sounds likeright now Turbine is caught between a trocka nd hard spot, shut down and reset or leave them up to troubleshoot the issues to prevent reoccurance.

Like I said 90% of what he is saying is Greek to me and he had to explain it to me in a "Networking for Dummies"  lecture so take this for what it is worth

You could have just waited a bit :)...It is a big change after all.

But I guess I am lucky so far as I have yet to get into a giant que for Landroval :/

I have to agree with Sgt. Frog, it's not like the sky is falling. All you would have had to do was wait a few days. No really biggie. Issues happen in these games. This is not he first game that has had network issues or worse. What about when someone discovered a very serious hack in Lineage 2 and they had to shut the game down for a few days AND you had to log into your account and change your password. And of course if there were issues then you had to contact customer service. It was over a week before I could get in.

I"m sure other games have had similiar problems. Huge wait when WoW was first launched. Equally huge wait for when Aion was launched.

You don't like the game you don't like the game, fine. But for something like this it's bound to happen.

Launch issues are normal. You got to keep in mind that while this is "only" a 900MB patch, the actual interest in the game is actually now greater than at launch. You need to calm down, sit back a bit, and try again the next day. If you feel a single weekend of techtrouble constitutes a reason to cancel your sub you a) didn't like the game that much anyway b) your going to be in for a rough ride in the future, every game has been going through this. Hell the trouble with instances that wouldn't open in WoW took months to resolve.

With it going Free To Play (ftp) LotRO has/will easily picked up +100K new people over the next week. Once users have d/led and patched the 12.6GB client even a fool should expect the fiveteen servers to be somewhat loaded. (They did add four new - no transfer servers.)

To now claim you refuse to play and will just delete the client 'because you refuse to wait to enter the server' is petulance at it's worst. Especially seeing as it is/was the weekend!

Overall the 2007 game is simplistic and loads of fun, especially for the kiddies, a real family type game (DX 9 [Wxp] to 11 [W7]). Now with it being free it is no real drain having 4 or 5 accounts for the family... And for those with existing accounts they can decide whether they want to keep paying $10/mo and get back 500 Turbine Points (tp) each month or go a la carte and degrade their VIP account to Premium (free, no subscription for former subscribers.)

Give it a few days, see what happens. It's normal for heavly advertised launches to experience a large spike the first few days/week that they go live....especialy if there is no cost associated with trying out the service.

The critical factor will be to see what things are like 2-3 weeks from now. If you are still experiencing long waits as a VIP...then you can legitimately complain about F2P ruining your play experience as a subscriber.

Note, it IS possible for that to happen... as Turbine needs to convert enough of it's new F2P users to paying users of some sort (whether it's just a few small one time purchases to go Premium...or it's actual) subscriptions... in order to cover the costs to provision enough infrastructure resources to meet all that demand. If they can't convert enough of those users to cover increased infrastructure costs...then they'll be in a real bind...and it will basicaly wreck the experience for paying users.

If they can convert enough of those users to paying (by some method)....then they should be able to pay for enough hardware to reduce those queues to a reasonable amount for paying users.  Right now...they have no clue as to how much money they'll be able to make off of all the people giving the service a "try".... So it'd be really expensive/risky for them to provision a ton of hardware in advance with no clue if they will be able to cover those costs.

The litimus test will be what happens 3-4 weeks down the line....once the "new shiney" spike traffic effect has worn off... They see how many regular users they are getting under the new model....see how much income they can expect to average from those users....and have had time to figure out what infrastructure they would need to put in place to accomodate that demand.

If in 3-4 weeks....they are still having a resource shortfall...it'd be time to start worrying a bit. Right now, it's premature.....and this is coming from a F2P hater.

We cant lose site of why Turbine has set its games to F2P . micro transactions in the USA alown reached $350 million . that just USA micro transactions. DDO was the tester , beings DDO had a mush smaller fan base  being  a game for a more select group. The gae hit F2P and quickly started to bring in a  nice chunk of the micro payments acrost the board.

The vast swing of income to DDO let turbine upgrage the game 3 times in the first 5 months and now the game sees new content every 90 days or so. With out the income from the F2P switch  this would have never happened.

Adding more serv. would take more money out of the pockets of the the game then it would add. They will have to upgrade the serv. they now have . it will cost more but i am sure they will do this very quickly. They ant just make 8 more serv. to do that would make 8 more serv. free players could just day farm toons on for free points. Trust me Turbine has done all the math on free points, and insured that FREE plays can not unlock everything with just grinding and day farming unplayed serv. Its set up to give the free player  just  the points needed to make them want  to buy some points them self, so they feel they are getting a deal.

The biggest money maker in F2P mmorpg games is item enhancements , you can not upgrade gear in turbine games . so they need to hit other areas. I am 100% sure with in the next 2 months you will see ash shop only outfits popping up in cash shop . fashion is #2 in sales in F2P mmorpg games . and you can also be sure this fashions will be in the 250-500 TP price range . giveing vip users a place to spend there 500 tp a month allowances . and generating minor  TP sales with in the vip users.

The game will make much  more money that is a given . any slap together fly by  night , pure hype no action game  set to market today will make money. This game has a established  base and a solid background so will make more than most. Even those vip that get mad and rage quit over the next few weeks a vast majority of them will soon be back in the game with in the month.

More money comming into game = more money turbine spends on the game = better game for everyone .

i know blaw blaw just my 2 cents but then what do i know

If you believe that  the company did not anticipate this or if you believe that they are in fact doing everything they can to alleviate the problem then my firend you are incredibly naive and lif is going to be kind of rough on you.

The bottom line is their bottom line, with few if any exceptions they refuse to spend the money on people or infrastucture to prevent these kind of problems.

I downloaded LOTR after reading some very positive posts about it, I was full of positive feelings and hopes, maybe this was the MMORPg I was looking for.  Now  my atttuted has changed, same ol same ol company attitude.

I have had no problems logging in.  There is a hierarchy for the log in though.  If you are not a VIP or at least a Premium member. . yes you are going to have a harder time.   Buy something from the store once. . get your Premium status. . so you can sell on the AH as well and that might help.

I would not put out tonnes of cash to set up servers for people who never plan to spend a dime either.  Those that have have priority and in two weeks it will die down.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

People who are new and want to try it out should focus on the smaller/pre-existing servers. Often times when a new server opens with not character transfers everyone floods those servers because they want to be the first to gather items that will be worth a lot until they are common so they can make money/have the glory feeling of being the first max X person on the server. Those people tend to fade off and go back to their old servers in time and the everyone rush the new servers mentality dies down.

Btw which are the 4 new servers I'm going to go rush them and be the first max level burglar who makes money off of selling stuff that isn't common yet.

Thing is, this guy had an account he canceled. Let me spell that out for you. He cannot log onto a game that he has paid for due to the influx of the F2P crowd. The freebies have nothing invested and nothing to lose but time. Outfctrl does.  Shit happens but when it costs money the shit stops, at least in his word.  Hope this clears it up for you.

If people have no patience, it is not Turbine's fault. I wish him good luck to find an MMO without any issues, especially on launch day of a big expac.

I had to wait 20 minutes to get in the server this weekend. Is it annoying? yes. Is it that much annoying that I will quit a game where I invested lots of time and money? No way. It is a small price for a great reward. If people cannot see that the influx of F2P is beneficial for EVERYONE, as it will bring many new players to the game (already got 2 in my kin, who started F2P and then subbed), well too bad.

Seems some people were just ready to jump at Turbine's throat because of the F2P.

This is why I will wait a month or so to try it.  I think being one of the first people to try an MMO is a bad idea and would always rather wait until the bugs are sorted out.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
