Mounts?

If we had instant travel in the real world...would you still want a car?   I would.

The traveling experience in RL is different...whether by plane, rail, car, bicycle, skateboard, etc.

The question of mounts is the same.  Your perspective of the game changes depending on your mode of travel.

Isn't it in the best interest of the game to show us different aspects of the game? Yes.

Arena Net already said that they wont sell anything that changes the gameplay of the game in the store.

    So no...

Oh they have?  That's awesome!  Good for them!

Still all for mounts.. even if I have to farm gold/karma for a month.

Travel will be done alot like Diablo 2, there will be waypoints but in order to use the waypoints you have to travel to that location first and then you can fast travel/teleport there every other time afterwards.

Back to the question i dont think they will have mounts cause they have waypoints and those Asura gates that are like mage portals from wow or jumpates from EVE, maybe like a  Stargate now i think about it.

But mounts add in another demention to gameplay... and pvp...  Yeah ok, we have waypoints in pve.  PvP would be amazing with mounts. ' "omg, i have to defend point x but i'm all the way over at point b!"  *gets on mount*'

The only way I'd like to see mounts in a game is if they add more gameplay elements than just a speed buff.

I'd just like to say that a in a siege pvp environment, a trebuchet would be a lot more exciting than a mount :p.

Would you mind letting me add to it?...With your axe swinging on your right hand you pass by on the left of an enemy chopping his head while not decelerating. I believe that would be awesomeimage

Humans and Sylvari could ride Charr or Norn in beast form. Another way interact with others and another reason to have Charr/Norn in your party. All while the Asura have their golems to ride inside of. Ha.

Something tells me the charr and norn wouldn't take too kindly to that idea.  A human trying to ride a charr in particular would probably lose a few vital organs before dismounting (or being thrown rather) lol.

Well there is a mount sorta, the Asura get them nifty Golems. Obviously no speed buff, but still badass. ;)

This might be an obvious question, but will we have mounts or follow the same travel system as in the first Guild Wars?

Jeff Grubb: Map travel? We have been looking at that, tried a couple things. One result of having all the different races is the Asura now have gates all over the place. We have points within the map for movement, but mounts… I’m going to have to cop out and say, “Under discussion.”

This is actually the closest information about it by anyone from ANET. It is pretty old so you'll never know but I translated it as "something we will add later, probably to the first expansion". But that is a guess of course, it is possible but rather unlikely that they have them in at launch.

We havn't seen any pictures of anyone on a mount either so I believe it is unlikely. Of course if you are optimistic so go ahead.

The mechanics for mounts themselves are in the game, it was included in the canceled campaign for GW that eventually became GW2.

I really hope there is no mounts, the only game that I liked mounts in is Darkfall.

I think this is one of those issues that some times people get caught up on that proabably wont really matter GW1 didnt need mounts travel was simple easy and didnt waste time. If they decide to add mounts thats great but if they dont thats great too cause it probably wont really matter.

I agree but I wouldn't mind a knight expansion with lances, PvP tournaments and so on.

Mounts without lances are rather pointless in my book, particularly in a game where you can maptravel. I never played a MMO with good mounted combat, in some you can't fight at all and in others it is more or less like not riding at all. And with no mounted combat, horses are just fine for when you travel long distances, which you don't need in GW2.

Real mounted combat is awesome, a friend of mine is jousting in tournaments IRL and that is incredible. To not have something similar in a MMO but just use the mount for faster travel takes away one of the main points of riding.

And if you want realism (maybe not MMO strong point but still), a human actually travels long distances faster on foot than on a horse, unless you change the horse several times for a fresh one.

That only works if you've been there once before.  Would you like to walk all the way from Canada to USA?  I know I wouldn't.

i would. i woudl walk to the next point then  go back for the night. pop over to the point last unlokced and walk more. much easier when you have those points, getting back takes no time, but i can take my sweet time unlocking them without haveing to travel all the way there and all the way back.  i can do it in incriments.  and when i get ther ei can always just pop back and forth.

and the point is if you have a mount you are basicly bypassing events that happen just to get somwhere and thats not what this game is about. the main system is events.

I agree with the OP, though for an additional reason. A mount is more than just a way to get from point A to point B and reduce travel time, it is also an extension of a character's achievement and personality. It represents another facet of customization that GW2 has been so good at adhering to.

Practically it may not make a difference if mounts are replaced by waypoints, but for personalization and immersion, mounts should be in. At least at some point.

And what if you want to get somewhere inbetween those two points ASAP for whatever reason.. possibly event-related?

Mounts = timesaver, in a lot of cases.  They can also be a lot of fun.. and, for me, add in an amazing war-like feeling to a game.

If you have a mount you are not 'basicly bypassing' events if you choose not to.

Final point, if you add in mounts, there is no reason why the distance between each waypoint can't be increased from eachother (expanding the world).

Does EVE have melee weapons?  No?

All MMOs should have melee weapons, period.  Maybe I'll try EVE when they add melee weapons.

as long as they dont add anything battle wize and they are slow as shit then im fine with it.

slow so it doesnt makie  getting the map easier as thats a title to itself (atleast it was) and haveingthat makes it far too easy. it also makes it too easy to bypass events and quickspeed to points in pvp (which causes its own balance problems at the start.)

and no battle ability because, balance and the fact that you can escape too easily if you are loseing.

(accually the fact that it makes it easy to escape when loseing makes mounts already too much)

Wow you actually play MMO games based on mounts??? That's.. shallow, very shallow. This is the same as someone saying "I won't play this FPS because it doesn't have flamethrowers."

And besides, if walking in other MMOs takes too long to get somewhere in an acceptible time, it doesn't mean it's going to be the same in GW2. So yeah.. no mounts and I welcome this decision - mounts ruin everything.

Edit: I just wish Anet would add a big inscription "NO MOUNTS HERE" in their FAQ on the official site. I hate these "will there be mounts" threads.
