In this game you get a tax advantage to putting different items in different areas. In other games, everyone gets the same rate so using alts is meaningless.
The tax right now is like 5%, though I can't check currently so someone would have to confirm. How much of a tax break they're going to give hasn't been stated. I think the difference may not be noticeable enough to offer a real advantage, maybe a few extra thousand gil.
Over the long haul, it would be add up. But how much is the "long haul?" Like I said, personally, I'd rather wait to see how much the tax break is, as the difference is the key.

Fair enough. They won't have a big advantage. Just an advantage.
I understand it's to get people to sell the correct items types in the correct areas. Their intentions are in the right place.
I dont think it even needs to be that much of a tax cut for it to end up helping. Players are going to end up going to Battlecraft Ward to buy their weapons. If you want to set up your weapons in another place because the tax break isnt low enough, fine, but everyone who wants to buy a weapon is going to end up going to the Battelcraft ward, so regardless of the tax break, the organization will work. Youll end up wanting to sell at the right area just to increase the chances someone will buy your items.
This is a really nice change, and one that I hadn't thought of. I'm just really glad they're not caving in and adding an AH.
I don't understand why anyone in the right mind would not want an AH. The stall system is garbage, as someone put it, its like playings where's waldo with an item. I, and anyone else with half a brain would prefer an AH. only ones who don't want an ah tend to be greedy asshats who wanna gouge people on prices.
Because some of us enjoy window shopping, and don't feel the system is junk.

This is another reason people with lots of retainers will have an advantage. They will be able to sell exactly the correct kind of products in each ward.
The people with 1 retainer will be able to sell their weapons in the weapon ward, but everything else they want to sell will also have to be sold in the weapon ward.

Which is... actually a huge advantage.
Along the same lines!!!!! We should be complaining about people who have faster connections speeds than us too!! Think about the huge advantage they have in combat!! Shame on SE for creating a game where connection speeds matter!!
But in all seriousness, the theory that has been presented has a few flaws:
1) It takes a ridiculous amount of time to gain meaningful mastery in more than maybe 1 or 2 crafts at this point (I've tried a jack of all trades approach, and although I enjoy it, barely produce anything that would be considered sellable).
2) Where in the world have people gotten the information that more retainers will cost actual money? If this is such a problem, why not petition SE to not charge money before they release extra retainers? Nip the problem in the bud!
3) Someone making a few more gil than you because they theoretically pay 1 more dollar for a service that doesn't even exist yet is just pandering at this point...
EDIT: I will probably be writing to SE and begging them not to charge for extra retainers, even if they do, it's really not the end of the world...
At higher levels, I believe each character is going to end up with a main craft anyways, you're not going to have five different types of items to sell.
But yes, having two or three that you can set up in different wards if you do have a variety to sell is definitely an advantage.

Um, I don't agree with any of your points.
1. Crafting does not necessarily have to have anything to do with buying and selling.
2. We got information about retainers costing $1 per retainer from Square/Enix.
3. They could theoretically pay $15 more dollars to keep a retainer in every section and have an incredibly easier time manipulating the markets than someone with one retainer could. It gives the person paying more a very high competitive edge.

1-2 weeks? Acceptable. This would be my first guess of what they'll do, considering it mostly involves just renaming the wards. (Though the taxes on items of inappropriate category are going another mile.)
It won't be quite as elegant as being able to grab everything you want at one place, but it will greatly reduce having to look throug hundreds of retainers to find the item you want. Instead, you just go to the appropriate ward and browse those retainers, and if nobody has it, it's not for sale. This solution should work.
Off the top of my head, main potential downsides I could see:
Got a bunch of stuff on various categories on your retainer that you want to sell on the same bazaar? Prepare to be gouged in taxes.
In fact, you might as well not bother selling items not related to that ward off your retainer. Taxes or no, it's not like anyone's going to be looking for unrelated items.
People will have old habits to break, the first ward is likely to be flooded with a bunch of inappropriate items until they curb that habit.
The ward that sells "crystals" (likely includes shard) is going to be massively overcrowded. As is the one tha sells raw mateirals.
The ward containing the category of item you want to sell is at retainer capacity? Good luck in the other cities' wards.
But, you know, even with these downsides, it's a great improvement over "here's two dozen wards with ambiguous labels and no incentive for the players to sell items by category. Good luck."

I'd have no problem browsing through every retainer in say a weapons area because presumably I was looking for a new weapon. It's fun to browse, after all. But there does, imo, need to be some organization to it. This could be just what's needed.

Most free to play games actually use a personal shop system like this one. Why it works in F2P games and not here?
Because in F2P games you get a small text box above your head to write in what your selling.
Currently, in FFXIV you are forced to check EVERY persons shop without even a hint at what kind of items they are selling.
Even with the organization FFXIV could benefit from this so you can see "Polearms and Axes" above a retainers head when you are looking for a Puglist weapon so know to skip them.
This is a step in the right direction, but its still crap! Here's why:
During the course of Gameplay, i accumulate more crap, drops, loot, etc. So lets say I use some of that to craft items that I want to sell. GREAT! Now I have specific wards to sell the goods I make....
But what if I make more than just armor....or weapons.....and what the hell am I supposed to do with all the junk I get while playing that I do NOT use for crafting? I have to pick one ward to sell my goods, then hope that someone who is shopping for Armor also needs all the other crap I am selling?
To the first person that tells me to buy more retainers for an extra buck each....I say, "SURE, just give me your credit card so I can cover all the extra retainers i would need to be that diversified."
NOW, I said a step in the right direction. What I propose is to populate the Market wards with NPC vendors that sell PC items on consignment. This way, I can sell my weapons through a weapons vendors in the weapons ward, my armors via an Armor vendor in the armory ward. Then no one has to wade through buckets of my other useless junk that I really should be selling in 8 other wards, but I am too cheap to give SE 8 more bucks for the priveledge of simplifying the buyers life.

I think that this is a step in the right direction. This will help make it easier for buyers and sellers to go about their busines. I do hope though that SE doesn't charge people real money for more retainers. IMHO they should either charge people in game gold for more retainers or perhaps more retainers could be opened up through a series of quests.
I hate saying this because it is good news they are updating their market system.
But doesn't this make it a lot easier for people to manipulate the market by having a ton of retainers? In other words, the more you pay, the bigger advantage you have.
I wonder if this isn't the real reason they don't have an AH.
Supposedly, the entire point of no AH was to make things harder for Gil Sellers, but the entire system gives them a huge advantage. They aren't going to hesitate to buy tons of retainers and it's easy for them to run an entire operation full of all the gathering and crafting classes, plus people out grinding. They will quickly assemble detailed blueprints of who should be making what, gathering what and grinding what. Normal players won't have much chance. The frustrations may even drive people who normally avoid RMT to go that route with this game.
The lack of an AH would have worked out if it didn't have any delay whatsoever, and accessing shops didn't have extra steps that went through the interface on top of that.
Ragnarok Online never had an auction house; streets were lined up on prontera with player made goods and drops from mobs. It still worked out fairly well because people could just click on the icon above people's heads, and the shop window would pop up instantly. Absolutely no delay, no cluttered ui to click through to access a person's shop. Plus people could tag their shops to at least show/hint at what they sold. The slowness of the ui and the unnecessary steps taken is a good chunk of the problem though, not just in the market, but in general. I don't trust SE to fix it to what it should be, since everything still feels roughly the same back from beta.

Noone is stopping you from paying more yourself and being up there with them.
I know. I don't like that idea.
I agree I don't think paying real money for more retainers is a good idea. It introduces real money into the game economy, which can have unfavorable consequences.

Really, if they just removed the dollar requirement on retainers and gave everyone a limited amount of retainers, I think this system would be ok.
I still personally prefer an AH and for many reasons, but that's another story.
I don't want an AH(don't have the time to explain why), but I agree with limiting the number of retainers to say 5. That way it forces people to not only price their items more competively, but also not to flood the market with unwanted items.

This does not mean that the crafting system is bad it just means SE will need to be extra vigilant to ensure that Chinese slave masters(and that is exactly what it is slavery of the Chinese lower class) can't effectively peddle their products.

I think it was less about deterring Gold Sellers and more about deterring botting. For all of the harvesting and crafting the mini games make it pretty hard to bot. The skill system makes it hard to bot killing monsters too and because you dont get money from grinding + hardly any monsters, botting mobs wont get them far either anyways. Furthermore, if they even do get anything to sell, the lack of AH means theyll have a hard time inflating prices.
Sometimes I wonder if the game was entire designed to stop botting...

I'm not really sure what the buying/selling system has to do with botting. Sure, the gathering system seems like a bot deterrent, but the economic system really seem to have no relation to botting at all.
I don't mind player shops. I don't mind an auction house. I don't see why we can't have both. Win/Win. These changes they are making to the market wards are a welcome change, but I still think they need to implement an auction house. Maybe having an auction house would also reduce the amount of retainers in these wards? I think so. For those who are looking forward to an auction house being added (myself included), don't expect much. If they didn't foresee any issues with these market wards (something that became apparent on a first trip there), we can only imagine the abomination of an auction house we might get.

I don't want an AH(don't have the time to explain why), but I agree with limiting the number of retainers to say 5. That way it forces people to not only price their items more competively, but also not to flood the market with unwanted items.

The crafting system currently in place is a dream come true for chinese sellers.

Sure, the gathering system seems like a bot deterrent, but the economic system really seem to have no relation to botting at all.
they're really trying to make this a "Sandbox" PvE game. I LOVE IT!
