EVE Online: The New Character Creator

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

When EVE: Incursion launches, the team will be rolling out the new art and models for NPCs and player characters. Players will have the opportunity to recreate their avatars when the update deploys. As devs admit, character art is one of the few parts of the game that has remained as it was on the game's launch in 2003. CCP has created unique models for each bloodline, race and gender, along with new hairstyles and clothes.

Does that mean you are releasing Incarna now?

No, just characters. This is a major overhaul in terms of art and technology, and paves the way for allowing you to explore the corridors of space stations in subsequent expansion. Yes, just to be clear, Incarna, the expansion where you can walk around as an avatar is not coming out this winter, but the first release of it is planned to come out next summer, in 2011. However, in the same way we introduced new planet graphics in Dominion and then Planetary Interaction one expansion later, we are introducing updated avatar graphics now in Incursion.

Redoing the characters of EVE Online is a major task. Not just technically, but also in terms of art and story. We tried to stay true to the spirit and style of each race and bloodline, while improving and refining the style and, in a way, correcting the mistakes of the past. However, we are very much aware that we are changing the face of your avatars. The characters have represented you since you started playing the game, and we realize that many have strong emotional ties with the character or look that they had created. Famous personas from the EVE community will have a brand-new face.

I must say, CCP is the one company I truly trust will be succesfull in every single way. They've always had their finger on the pulse, and I see that haven't changed. Best of luck with the new changes! Looking forward to see them ingame!

Does this mean they are going to update the lore in regards to how cloning works?  Because to pull this off, they really need to address some of the older articles on the site that are still listed as canon - some sort of technical advancement or the like...

edit:  This would be one of the easier aspects of the lore to address imho...

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

my favorite quote "They also have feet, which is a huge evolutionary step, made possible due to them having feet."

    Well said!

Incredible, although I'll miss the tattoos.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

Only CCP would look at the most realistic characters in MMOs today and consider them too cartoony, and I love them for it.

    Holy shit!

Time for me to finally buy a new rig!!!

The only true mmo on the market demands it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man... Being a Eve player is freaking awesome.

We play a game that never stops evolving, hundreds of sub systems have been added and the freaking sky is the limit.

I wish other developers offered such an amazingly deep and evolving experience like CCP does.

The entire genre would finally realize its full potential if it did and we would all be golden.

I just hope that if/when they add "Crew" they don't make some stupid ass lore crap. A simple "we always wanted to have the feature but didn't have the means to implement it properly." would do much better than 'ham-handing' together some bogus lore that makes you wonder if the Dev team has a 2yr writing the lore.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising everytime we fall.

I always assumed that the ships have crews (after all, some of them have thousands of windows,) and that the Capsuleer is  the captain, navigator, etc. Or, all the main positions in other words.

I must say i haven't played in awhile, but CCP is very good at what they do!!! Can't wait to see what they do with WoD  !

Gotta admit from that screenshot and the others they have realeased it looks great. Have yet to see any models with any hair though, and I'm wondering if the portraits are going to be static pictures or will we see the toons expression change and blinking etc... not sure if I would want it but I wonder.... I'm also happy that they stated they they will stay true to the overall visual style of eve. Anyway, will pop into sissy and check it out in a few days.

    The lore is against crew.

There was crew.  Then there was no crew.  The no crew obliterated the crew.  Capsuleers became more popular with that and people more willing to take the risks.

To an extent, Incarna very well could be the EVE NGE - an EVE 2.0 where much of the lore has to be rewritten.

You assume correctly. Ships have crews according to lore.

That is not true.  Lol, too funny.

Ships had crews while pod technology was in its infancy.  As the technology grew, crews were done away with because a single pod pilot could do everything better.  It was a waste of life and isk to attempt to fight a capsuleeer with a crewed ship.

Back in 2005, you could find the Crew number on each Ship's attribute page in game.

They got rid of them and wrote it into the lore like Virus Dancer said.

With the new guy they have doing the books and all, they really need to make a concerted effort to go through and update what is canon in regard to the lore though.

I mean, seriously, the site still states that our clones are not actually clones of us - but rather they are just bodies prepped to receive our minds.  That always put a damper on even the character picture - other than stating what we might have looked like before our first death.

Now with the focus with Incarna and avatars, etc - they really need to fix that.

Yes, your avatars portrait looks so realistic. However, i highly doubt the "real" avatars you will actually be using will be "near-Crysis quality".

    Why not?

I've seen quite a few games that will push those kind of graphics, as long as your machine can handle it.

I think the whole purpose of the new character creator is to allow you to create the character that you're going to be able to walk around stations with. Getting rid of the separation of your Portrait and your Avatar.  They already mentioned, that the avatars will now be animated in this devblog.

Sorry, I just don't follow your logic on this post.

And which mmorpgs with 30K-40k players on one server at once would those be? In fact, which mmorpgs with regular server populations would those be? AoC? Nowhere near Crysis quality. Entropia universe? Already tried it. Even using the Cry2 engine, their graphics are not Crysis quality.

You're reading it a bit too deeply and even in the dev blog he did mention there is still the possibility of them allowing you to jump into a "minmatar looking" clone from an Amarr body.

The clones can look like you but they don't have a consciousness until you put your consciousness into one. In that sense the lore doesn't need to be changed because it doesn't contradict anything.

    This is not a game.
