I cancelled my collectors edition for two reasons: the first being I'm moving to another country and simply don't have the time for an MMO at present and the second; I am disappointed and saddened by my waning interest in the game.
I've been playing games for more years than I care to remember, the FF series and other great games from both the squaresoft and enix camps among them. FFXI was my first MMO and I fell in love with it. Back then I thought it was an awesome game but as time wore on and I tried many other MMO's and learned what made a game fun and what didn't, and FFXI had a lot of aspects to it that now appear archaic and unappealing by todays standards.
That's why I am so disappointed by FFXIV. It feels like for every step forward, they took two steps back to FFXI. I mean the game is stunning visually but it just doesn't play as well as it looks. I won't focus on the negative aspects since you can do a quick search of the web and see plenty on that subject. I just hope that FFXIV doesn't fail because I really believe there are some strong elements in the game that could really be developed further.
I think anyone interested in the game should really check it out, but if you've been hyped about this game and intend on purchasing it tone down your hype or prepare to be disappointed.
I'm personally looking forward to GW2 and TERA now but I certainly hope FFXIV evolves into a success.
Tera and GW2 look like evolved games. Games based on an evolving genre and not nostalgia. I do hope FFXIV corrects it's errors, but I feel like square will be unable to admit a mistake. I hope that the development team proves me wrong.
You are assuming that "Nostalgia" is a mistake. Now I would agree that if all MMOs did not evolve it would be bad, but I do propose that there is room for more old fashioned style MMOs. Take Super Mario Bros Wii it is the same game (with prettier graphics and some minor advances) as the original Super Mario Bros, and yet nobody complains about its backwards thinking.
In this case, I don't think FFXIV has the good type of nostalgia. The New Super Mario Brothers, and Super Street Fighter 4, on the other hand, improve the franchises. They have quicker, more innovative graphics and combat, not slower and less streamlined gameplay. They are improvements on the originals. FFXIV on the other hand, is slower than even FFVII, which I still play when I get the chance. I'm not the only one saying that this game is a step backwards in the wrong direction; however, I value your opinion, and if you like this game, be happy with it, don't let me dissuade you in any way. I hope it gives you years of fun, but I don't understand why you think this is such a great game because I don't believe that it is.
Imagine that FFIV is your favorite mint condition car. Now picture the steering wheel above the trunk and backwards. That's ok, it still drives right? Now replace the engine with a riding lawnmower engine and you have FFIV. SURE the car still looks amazing, and you love it right?
Once SE put's the steering wheel where it belongs and replaces the crappy engine, you will have a pretty damn nice car.

The game does have potential but I fall into the category that as pretty as it is, it is also has a lackluster quality to it. Why can't I criticize the game, in a contructive manner and I still am labeled as someone who wants everything handed to them and as being impatient? It seems to be the fanboi comeback for any anti-FFXIV comments of threads.
This game is in need of some serious tweaking, lets see how things develop in the next 6 months.
I think you are generalizing to much. Who most of us are arguing with are the "this game sucks because I read a thread that says so" crowd. In fact I welcome any feedback about the games misgivings as long as they are constructive and not the usual lambasting people who like the game type. Very few fans of the game are reacting in the way you describe, but very many if not most detractors of the game want to proclaim us as fanboys and idiots for even enjoying the game.
I've gotten seven pages in and have not noticed one person who said "this game sucks" because the forums said so. What I think it boils down to is it just plain get's tiring reading the same type of criticism over and over for a product you enjoy, and that is not a bad thing it is in fact a natural response and shows everyone here's passion for gaming.
I just hope everyone involved in this debate realizes for the most part you all deserve credit for keeping things civil (even though we all know the urge to not be may have been a bit strong) and there is absolutely nothing wrong with you letting us know you like the game and what you like about the game but the same goes for the many posters who are going to let us know they don't like it and what they don't like about it.
As far as this game goes whether anyones played the game or not it is and has been obvious since the beta that there are going to be alot of people willing to try this game that will not like it and that number may be higher than those who try it and stay. No matter what happens though some people like the game and will continue to do so (I don't think the op is trying to convince anyone not to) and hopefully for those it will continue to get better and maybe somewhere in there they may see that if they also let SE know that some of the concerns voiced by those who didn't stick are addressed then maybe we'll have more people who like it and for where this game is going to round out population wise that couldn't be a bad thing.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

If this game has a strength going for it, it's the graphics. Sincerely, I hope the developers listen to criticism and kudos and change the game to make it better. Right now, in my personal opinion, this game still needs alot of work.
I want to call this impression thread objective, but it's not.
There's more to linearity than something that could be circumvented by the ability to jump. You've got three starting areas and reason to visit them all, that's not very linear. You can develop your chracter in severa ldirections, that's not very linear. I'm guessing you started in Gridania, because The Black Shroud is the only map which is mostly a series of paths.
It's true producing a single item via crafting takes awhile, but each item has considerably more longevity. You don't just level up out of items in this game, but can use them across several different jobs, and then sell them afterwards to the player economy.
You can speed class changing via use of macros. See the thread on the top of hte page for more info on that.
So the combat is slow-paced. There's nothing wrong with that.
But, you know, not all games are for everyone, so if this is how you feel then I'm not going to try to force you to feel otherwise.
1. It is linear and tiny, with artificial borders at every step.
2. The combat is even slower paced because of all the lag in the game.
3. YOU are pretty much the least objective person here. You go into every thread and put on a defense. You use every excuse in the book, including saying that someone ELSE's opinions aren't "objective." What is that supposed to mean? It is the same as calling someone a troll or simply outright insulting someone. It is called ad hominem and it is used as a way to discredit someone's opinion by attacking the person. You are simply doing the more subtle and passive aggressive internet version of it.

It isn't worth arguing. There are people in this world who argue for the sake of arguing. He obviously knows his game is a sinking ship (unless SE picks up the slack big time). You would be surprised at what people believe, and what is actually fact.

No, I have to admit complete ignorance in knowing this obvious thing I should be knowing. Partly because I'm pretty sure SE will be picking up the slack. Jebus, the game hasn't even been out for 2 weeks (including the collector's head start).

Dont feel bad Geldon, I'm at a loss here too. All these people who dont even play this game have already condemned it to death before it even gets rolling, and they act as if the world knows this as fact even if it hasn't happened yet. I dont see this game as a 'sinking ship' either, nor do all the people I play it with every single day. These arguments they are tossing at you are just false, and we all know it so dont let them get to you. If they actually played this game they wouldnt say what they are because they would know better. Seriously, thier statements are so far out of factual it actually shines a light on them as to what they really are. Anyone who plays this game, really plays it, can see the truth in this.
(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

The games been marketed for over a year. The development process has probably spanned a few years. I know you like your game, and I don't have a problem with that, but the fact the game has only been out two weeks is not a great defense of the parts of the game that I personally consider flaws. Halo Reach has been our for two weeks and it's awesome, and complete. It could be considered an MMO in some respects. It's massive, multi-player, and online.

I've played the game for about 50 hours. Maybe that's only scratching the surface, but there's not enough there to make me want to delve deeper into the game. There are too many flaws. On the other hand, if you are enjoying the game, don't worry about what other people think. Enjoy it! But please stop the ad hominem.
"Final Fantasy XIV is a notable entry to the genre but only for what it lacks. It lacks character; bare-bones quests and audiovisual repetition fail to instill a sense of fantasy wonder. It lacks cohesion; communication failures, economic oddities, and stringent limitations leave you constantly directionless. And it lacks joy; the abysmal interface and boring monsters make it a struggle to stay invested. The open-ended classes, the stunning graphics engine, the focus on story--these elements deserve rightful praise. It's a shame they weren't put to use in a game worthy of the Final Fantasy brand. Certainly, Final Fantasy XIV will improve as features are added, yet the failures go beyond the superficial. Updates may address a multitude of flaws, but "fun" is not a feature that can be added with a simple patch."
'But we can recommend that you keep an eye on the news to see how this game evolves. If the developers can make it easier for new players to get a foothold in Eorzea, work out the lag issues, keep a good-sized community around, and tell a compelling story through the main quests, this could be the best MMO the world has ever seen.'
Adoration. Pure, unadulterated adoration. I was awestruck at the game I was playing, and every subsequent moment of play only reinforced that initial rush. For every choice that was a misstep, there were another half-dozen decisions that were just plain brilliant.
FFXIV is a game that I've been looking forward to for the better part of a year, and for me, it's been worth every minute of the wait. It is very emphatically not a game for everyone, and yet the people who are going to like it are going to really like it. In the end, you can't ask for better than that.'
Just mentioning it
Although I think it's safe to say that as FFXIV is now that it isn't a game for the majority of current MMO gamers; too many hurdles and annoyances to overcome before any fun is reached for them. Also even if it polishes and shapes up in time, smoothening out some of the largest grievances, then due to some of its very different design choices it still won't be a game that most MMO gamers will like.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

Read the reviews. You just gave me a good reason to stop reading massively. The best one so far, in my opinion is from gamespot. By all means I don't mean to rain on your parade. If you like this game don't let me influence your opinion. I'm not trying to bash the game just for kicks. I really want to like FFXIV, but it sucks.

Sure mate, I didn't want to steer you away from your opinion as well, I fully understand how you regard the game negatively from your experiences.
Stopping with reading massively is just silly though: it doesn't always have to be a bad thing to see opinions and reviews that aren't conform your own opinion.

In the case of the massively First Impressions article on Final Fantasy XIV, I guess I can respect Sera stinking his (or her I'm not sure if Seraphina likes to be referred to as male or female. Sera is transgendered, which is fine with me and this is not meant to be a comment on Sera) neck out, but my experience with the game is not congruent with her excitement. I'm not really sure if the flaws of FFXIV are pointed out.

Done blindly defending SE. I kept telling people...chill, relax, wait, but **** that. This game is the biggest steaming pile of **** produced in the MMO market in the history of MMO's. Every company should use this as an example to their dev's of what not to ******* do.
What where they thinking:
I am so frustrated with this game. Does Square Enix have ANY idea what they are doing? this release is absolutely mind boggling. Basically the environment was created in about 3 days.
Its as if the dev took a giant **** and rock formations came out. Then he took ANOTHER **** and random monsters where sprinkled all over the land. Where the **** is the HOOK? doesn't ever game dev want a giant hook that grabs players in right away? The Leve quests are so poorly designed that it makes me wonder what the **** is going on over at square enix.
They made these leve quests insanely retarded. No IMAGINATION what so ever, instead of making the leve quests some bad ass quest where you have to go into a crazy ass dungeon or castle to fight monsters and beat the boss. NO instead they took another giant **** and sprinkled random ass rats everywhere on the terrain and called it a leve quest.
Another thing is the leve quests say like..."go to village x it was raided, go check what happened" YOU GET TO THE FUCKIN LOCATION and it's 2 FUCKIN RATS SITTING ON THE WIDE OPEN ******* FIELD.
GIVE ME A ******* BREAK! Is SQUARE ENIX this ******* un-creative? A 12 year old with down syndrome could have done a better ******* job. Actually maybe that's what they should have done. ASKED fuckin 12 year old what to ******* do.
Having to look up every macro/recipe/and sitting through massive UI lagg doesn't = hardcore. It equals anoying as ****. Hard games are hard because it's not easy to obtain certain gear, not easy to level, not easy to defeat bosses. THAT'S DIFFICULTY. difficulty isn't some bullshit that is there to absolutely annoy the living **** out of you. We want a game that IS FUN, not a ******* game that feels like work.
conclusion:
instead of making me pay to play their ATROCIOUS product; SE SHOULD BE PAYING ME to dive into the MASSIVE **** pool that is final fantasy xiv

The only reason XI went for so long and XIV will go for so long is because it has the name Final Fantasy by Sony. If it was named something and run by someone else it wouldn't flop but go into f2p with a cash shop which XI and XIV should be.

Go look at FF11s patch notes, it was as baron as this in the first few weeks, then everything the AH, the NMs, the ability to party properly were all added in a month and a day in.

standards have changed. and ffxi was never any good. It had a very small US following. But it's ancient, and you can't release dog poo like that in 2010.
I have been on the fence about this game. Was thinking of giving it a shot still. But after that chuckle, i guess i will stick to GA this weekend and save my money for something else.
But the game feels linear. It doesn't have an 'open world' feel. It feels like I am playing an MMO on rails. I have to follow a certain path, I can't climb, and I can't jump. It feels like an old school game. If I wanted to play an old school game, I would have bought an old school game.
Old school games rarely told you what to do, many of them had few or no quests anyways, like Lineage.
It is new MMOs that railroad you, even if it happened in some of the old ones too. And current trend is going for more of this.

So, for all the "the game is not for you people" out there. Who is a game with a sloooooow interface made for? I think that was the nail in the coffin for me; I can handle long leveling times, long crafting times, etc. etc. but long times between keypresses/clicks is a no go.
Comments
Nice analogy.
Did you check you the gamespot review?
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/finalfantasy14/review.html
The last paragraph of the critic's review
Brutal, but honest.
Hmmm... did you see the CCC review?
'But we can recommend that you keep an eye on the news to see how this game evolves. If the developers can make it easier for new players to get a foothold in Eorzea, work out the lag issues, keep a good-sized community around, and tell a compelling story through the main quests, this could be the best MMO the world has ever seen.'
Or Massively.com's FFXIV impressions piece:
'What were my first impressions of FFXIV?
