Rob Pardo said in an interview during the Blizzcon stream that Blizzard's new MMO that is under tight security to prevent any leaks is playable within the company. He says that Blizzard employees have played the game and they're collecting feedback. Unfortunately that playable version Rob says is nowhere near any kind of public announcement, definitely not this year and probably not next year. Unfortunately we're going to have wait a little longer.

July 12th 2012 - Lost Vikings the MMO sees the light of day outside Blizzard studios
Why introduce the new calf when you can keep milking your cash cow?
It's all vaporware, until I get a beta invite
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
One things true about Blizzard, they'll serve no wine before its time.
I agree, 2012 before we learn a whole lot about this, though there might be some announcements during the 2011 Blizzcon

i think you know the answer to this question.
I imagine that it is fairly easy to create a general environment with a character to run around. What takes time would be creating a full story, textures and graphics for the whole world, and a system to allow millions of players to connect to it. And since they say that it is going to be a next gen mmo, they probably won't just reuse wow's code.
So, I'm sure they are working hard to make it awesome before they give it to us
Maybe they made sure to have a playable core before spending a lot of time on their graphics.. :-)
You cannot really launch the hype machine as long as there aren't any good graphics to show up. And they probably don't want to overshadow their current products.
Im kinda glad they said this mmo was going to be based on a new IP.
If they released a Starcraft mmo they would instantly own 99% of the genre (1% plays EvE).
So bring on that MMO blizz...
Addition: Watch the god damn thing be Starcraft... Can you imagine Three sided pvp with WoWs combat engine! And actual good Pve...
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
For some reason I've had this feeling that it actually is a Starcraft MMO even though they say otherwise. I think they're playing tricksies.

This also means more expansion milking for WoW. I just hope that his new ip isn't too much of an obvious copy this time around. They also expect this new mmo to co-exist with WoW. I hink what isinteresting so far is...
1. They said it will have a much broader appeal. I can't see how much broader you can get when you have alot of gamers of all gaes playing WoW right now. Only thing that comes to mind is console gamers. Cross platform perhaps ?
2. New IP - WoW was nothing more than a copy of Warhammer ip. For years they keep milking it and it seems they will be milking it forever. They are the kings of copy and It is hard for me to phathom anything majorly original from this group.
3. Playable but no announcement until 2012 ? Ok fine but if history serves us correct when Blizzard announces a game it usually means another 3 more years of wait time. Atleast Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 have been that way.
4.Some how Bungie factors into this. It is way too obvious Bungie is attacted to Blizzard's online expertise.Funny how Blizzard and Bungie are both preaching the same thing about a new ip.

I would sci-fi geek out. This would be epic on levels that epic has not reached. If harrison ford decided to reprise his role in a Bladerunner Sequel thats the only way that level of epic would be reached ever again in my life time.
Starcraft MMO... give me... now!!!!
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I'm with you on that one

I just had to comment on #2 which is a dreadfully misinformed comment. WoW is based off of their long standing Warcraft RTS games which have been around for a very long time.
Starcraft is losely based on the Warhammer 40K universe, so when that MMO is release you'll have a "starcraft" mmo. We'll just wait to see if it's any good.
i hope it really is a new IP, I'd like to see Blizzard do something different. While they are the "kings of borrowing", i think they do a decent enough job of changing things just enough to keep it sorta fresh, so I'd like to see what they can do.

Just so you know, Warhammer came out about 21 years ago, it's a tabletop game. It was out long before Warcraft was around (and the Warcraft RTS series was losely based off the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Tabletop Mini game).
I'd love to see a Rock n Roll Racing game.
That'd be pretty awesome right there.
Seeing how I still play this game, I'd be all over it as well.
Might as well make a General Chaos mmo while they're at it!
Which were based off of Warhammer...
He who keeps his cool best wins.
Sorry but you are the one who is "deadfully" misinformed.

Warcraft came out Nov 1994
It is a well known fact (not to mention dreadfully obvious when you compare the two IPs) that Starcraft is based on WH:40k and Warcraft is based on WH.
Little tip: It is generally a good idea to at least consult google before commenting.
2012 is a long time, I trust blizzard to bring out a 100% polished game.
March on! - Lets Invade Pekopon
Lets just accept it will be a Facebook game
if they were making a StarCraft MMO (starcraft universe per se)
and it releases and becomes super popular..
would the MMO industry have to work into their rational thinking that every other Sci-fi mmo would be labeled
a SU Clone?
I am smelling mmorts where you can also make your own space stations and travel from planet to planet.
It's going to be a very long time until they anounce anything about their new project. I think the best we can hope for is some kind small announcement around the time SW:TOR is released. Blizz likes to steal peoples thunder.
I wonder how Blizzard is going to do this... I mean, their current MMO is just a borg of half assed ideas stolen from better more innovative companies. So there's no one left to really rob to make a new game...should be interesting. Even if its the worst game in the world the fanboys will buy it by the millions (kind of like how WoW was at launch)
