Remember when mounts were level 40 ?

delete5230delete5230 Member EpicPosts: 7,081

Long time ago mounts were given at level 40, I think they went for like 60 gold ( unsure )

I remember it' sucked to get your mount, unless you craft or harvest, it took for ever !

BUT :

Looking back they were the fun days.  As hard as it was, the community was more grounded, and social.  People relayed on quest in zones more.  People stayed put, and you got to know your fellow Elf, or Orc, you became more friends.

Now you start a character, make a friend to quest with, stop for a fast pizza, and bamm your friend is gone !

This just came to mind, sorry, just thinking of the past when I loved WoW :)

yeah it was 90g i think with the epic mount at around 500g took me a week straight to get the gold for the horse back in the day now i think the epic mount is like 90g and u can get that with an hour. Still the game back then was good now its just silly.

Wow you critted me for 1000 with nostalgia!.

I remember grinding rock elementals for 3 levels for their solid stones and grey drops as my level 37 undead Rogue just to get my first mount, Those were the days!.

you know, after the third time or so of trying to quest STV and just being below 40, I can see the logic in lowering the mount requirement. Really though, I don't think the lack of mounts is what made people more sociable at the time. I think that was just more the nature of the game back then. The game was balanced for Vanilla. Once the game became balanced for BC or WoTLK, it changed how people managed their way through vanilla zones. Least, that's my amateur opinion.

Edit: I would just add, that the level 40 mounts did come with more of a sense of achievement. Even without something popping up and saying "hey, you achieved something!". Now leveling to the mount seems more like a chore you endure then a goal you strive for.

    Remember creating a Dwarf,

You would start in the cold snow area of Dun Morogh, you even felt cold.  Then you would make your way to Loch Modan and get the feeling that it's turning Spring, then the next choice was The Wet lands.... You stayed their until the quest ran out. Everyday you would log on and see other friends playing along side you.

You could get around , that was sure, but you felt dedicated to doing your race area, no mounts.  If you did adventure out, you felt that you needed to return.

Now by level 10 your friends are scattered across the world, and you feel no sense of loyalty to them.  The next day, you send them a tell, and you get a tell back saying WHO are you ?

What do you expect when you label every stranger you meet as 'friend'?  Don't rely on everyone who happens to kill a mob next to you to become your friend.

I remember getting that level 40 mount then the epic at 60. At that time the game still somewhat made you work for your mount. It seems Blizz really dumbed everything down since then. Its pretty easy to get what you want now. I hope with the Cataclysm content they will make it more challenging, and if not I think I am still going to enjoy all the new level 1-60 revamp of the world and I am really looking forward to the archeology proffession.

I mined Alterac Mountains for weeks to get my first mount.... i would just run in circles around the Ogers... it was awesome... so much fun and I really felt a sense of accomplishment.

I'm returning from Vanilla WoW to try out cataclysm... i hope it's awesome...

I remember when WoW was good....

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

While I don't mean to ruin anyone's nostalgia and rose colored memories, I was thinking the same thing.

I honestly wouldn't expect them to keep me in memory any more than the guy in line behind me at the grocery store.

It's a big drawback for MMO's, compared to, say, a PnP campaign.  You never truly meet the people you're playing with.  At best, you hear their voice over skype.

Yeah, getting your first mount at 40 was pretty cool. I started saving up the gold in my early 30s. Vendored all the crap. Sold anything else in the AH. I had some guild mates who didn't plan ahead and still didn't have their mounts at lvl 43!

I also remember grinding for what felt like an eternity so I could get my epic mount. Back when I got my epic mount, the only choices you had were colors of the same racial mount. I didn't know anyone who had reached exalted with another faction yet. There was no cloth turn-in. And when I finally did get it, it was such an awesome feeling of accomplishment.

I understand Blizzard reducing the grind and cost though, especially when they made so many different epic mounts available.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

First Mount was 90g i think, the epic was 1000. It was also when you had to grind rep if you wanted to have a mount from another race (i.e. I was a dwarf that had a Frostsaber, uber at the time before ZG). Anyway, if you want nostalgia, remember when it was nigh impossible to get a group to finish Scholo, there was so much trash, and to get the air xmute recipe you had to do it 5 man, it was like pulling teeth. Anyway, I say this because I made my first 1k g in wow farming sholo for the air xmute and Skin of shadows so I could make Shifting Cloaks for all the rogues and hunters. Made insane cash in the day. Anyway, nice memories, its really a different game now.

I remember milking the war effort on my Warlock making thousands of gold all while grinding all 4 factions to exalted. Pretty sure I was one of the first to have all 4 different faction mounts (and not the free bullshit ones they handed out with BG tokens).

    Yes, I remember those days.

I remember doing circles in Shimmering Flats because the mobs there could drop some grey stuff that sold for many silvers...

And I, for one, am glad those days are over!!

Damn, it was super boring to just go around and around killing the same mobs for hours just to get sa lousy horse! Do you really want me to believe you would prefer it that way??

Oh yes, I can imagine NOW you feel like you did something... but when you were doing it, can you honestly say "oh yeah, that was so awesome... just passed 5 hours farming grey mobs.... this is what I want to do all the days in this game..."

I say NO! to that! Give me rewards for challenges that really challenge ME, not how much time I have available.

Doing an instance run in an hard instance without losing anyone? now that is nice, reward me for that. Winning a Battleground with team work and tactics? now that is fun, reward me for that, not for mindless grinding.

So, I understand how it feel, I really do, I feel the same about Star Wars galaxies at times... it is just how your MIND works, the bad experiences are buried while the good ones are shining in there (unless you suffer from depression, in which case it is the other way around) but this is just an illusion your brain plays on you. If you dig deeper, you WILL remember it was not such a great feeling and there were many bad things too. ... or then you really loved farming grey mobs for hours on end... then well, good for you I guess, I hope you can find something similar again.

Those were the days..best game mmo or not ever made...sadly after the last patch before the first expansion the game lost its magic.

Yeah well I remember the good times too, took me to I think 47 before I got my first mount. Dont think I cared enough to get an epic until I was level 68 or something like that.

Now though you dont need in game gold at all, just $25 and your set on every toon.

The words.. JUST..  and    $25   .. should not be used in the same sentence in my opinion.  We are talking about a copy-paste sparkle pony that should have been an in game attainable item in the first place.

Yup... I remember when you knew pretty much everybody on your server.  Now, a person could get a realm first and 2 days later we forget who the hell they even are.  90 gold was a huge deal, and some people could not attain it before level 55.  Also, level 40 was a huge deal.  People went into dungeons expecting to wipe the first time or two, because the guides we have now were not out.  Also, people in the game were a more patient crowd.  I miss that community, but it has long since been scattered across the web to play other games.

Welcome to the reign of impatience and immaturity in WOW...

I remember when I first played WoW several years ago.

The only thing I knew about the game is that it was on line, and I needed to buy a better Graphics card. I had no one to talk to about it, no real life friends that played, and did not think of any 3rd party web sites for information.  I spent about a week in Shadowglen, and Dennar figuring out how to move, how to pull abilities out of my spell book, studying abilities, and chatting and making friends, that lasted into the 40's.  Now and then several of us would get together and run the little cave in the middle of the area, and try and get some loot.  At around level 7 I ventured into Darnassus to find hundreds of players and found everything overwhelming.  At level 10 I had to ask in chat where to go next.  Darkshore was the same, well over 50 people most hanging out in the town. Finding others to quest with, and having slow fun.

    NOW :

I've watched youtube videos of players running the new Cataclysm starting areas for the Goblins, and Worgan. They can run it in a matter of two hours. I'm sure I can too....For me I think the fun is over.

Staying Put, and staying grounded in a zone with others was probably the most important aspect of the fun I had.

My memory is lousy, so all I really remember is that suicide run at low level through the wetlands to Ironforge so that I could play with my friends who were in the Eastern Kingdoms. image

I haven't played WoW in 5 years (have a level 60 rogue and hunter). My hunter was my first level 60 and I remember not having enough gold at level 40 to purchase my mount. Thank god for guildmates/friends lol. I never did get the epic mount, I really sucked at saving gold in any game really,

I don't really miss WoW but it was a good game when it first came out. It was something new at the time. Now it is the same old..cause most games after WoW copied it sigh.

I never raided much in vanilla WoW, but I know that even then they had raids with epic gear drops. Molten Core, Ony, Blackwing Lair, etc. Even though I didn't raid much even I had a few pieces of epic gear from those raids.
