I've been looking for a great MMO since DAoC died off. Nothing has really done much for me. I tried Darkfall's trial, and I really began to enjoy it. It isnt the best looking game out there, but it was FUN. I knew I was in danger everywhere which was part of the excitement. But I have to admit, it's too hardcore for me. I was killingm mobs not too far from the starter city, some Mercian dudes. They were dropping armor that I desperately needed. And then someone comes along, who is moving at WARP SPEED compared to what my character will, and ganks me in one hit. He then proceeds to completely loot my corpse.
I know, that's the point of this game, right? Excpet it just plain isnt fun to lose EVERYTHING, and not even have the tiniest chance to escape. If I died, cool. If he could take my money, cool. If I lost some experience, cool. But losing EVERYTHING and starting over ALL the time? Nah, that just isnt fun. The idea of completely looting EVERYTHING is too far, IMO, and it will keep this game from taking off.

The key item in open pvp worlds like original uo, darkfall, and mortal, etc... is, you never really get many items that are really special and difficult to replace. Don't wear it if you can't afford to replace it several times over.
Keep in mind it is a different mindset, and a few dicks can make for a rough day... but at the same time the sense of satisfaction is very high when you overcome them. Shrug.

The other thing about UO that needs to be mentioned is that it allowed for a means of escape. This is something the new breed of games dont ever really capture. If you give the wolves to many ways to easily kill people you wont have many sheep left. There always needs to be a way to escape.
You've just learned, first-hand, why this type of game has never caught on with the masses. The vast majority of people playing MMORPGs do not have any fun in an open-PVP, full-loot system. That is why these types of games are developed by hobbyists and enthusiasts (i.e. indies), and not by major companies.
It's not quite that DFO is Hardcore. In fact, it's actually quite Carebear when you get to know it's current population (mostly Vets).
The problem is that New Players can't run away anymore. Bunnyhopping became very popular slightly before summer and you can even outrun Mounts using Bunnyhopping. Good exemple : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHh7xGQ-AsI
The main issue with DarkFall is that Vets are everything and New players are nothing. Vets can badly exploit the alignement system which basically means that being Blue or Red means nothing. New Players are severely punished for killing. New Players can't run away either, Vets can catch up with their eyes closed. New Players don't have the knowledge and money that Vets do, and are severely punished when they lose their loot, etc.
The current game is not Hardcore. The broken features/bad design choices simply punishes New Player more than they should be.
People exploiting alignement system. Red enters the city, triggers the tower but is healed by a Blue friend. If players try to kill the Red (as they should), the Blue gets in the way. If you hit the blue, you are flagged Gray, meaning that the tower will attack you. Even though he's helping a red kill blues in town.... The video below is from a Guilds with New Players (Leader: Bashur) who are experiencing this very issue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw1_aTtgmMM
The people are right, Darkfall will never appeal to the masses. That is a good thing. I love the current community and direction the game is headed. It is about time a game company caters to MY needs.
As a newly subbed darkfall player myself I feel the need to chime in on this thread. So a guy came along, killed the OP, and took all his stuff? It literally would take 5 minutes or less of play time to replace everything he had. Sure dying makes you angry, but the longer you play the game (I know I've only played a month or so), the less you care. Not to mention that you shouldn't be carrying EVERYTHING on you anyway. The name of the game is: don't carry stuff on you that you aren't willing to lose and bank a lot. By the same token all gear degrades over time and can't be repaired anyway, so the OP was going to lose his stuff and have to replace it one way or the other eventually (especially starter gear that's usually only got 1/2 durability when you loot it off mobs).
I have had many harrowing escapes from vets and through the use of my mount or awareness of my surroundings escaped. Apparently I am not supposed to be able to do that according to many of the above posters and while I would probably lose an outright foot race to a vet, escape is certainly not impossible depending on the circumstances. As far as actually dying goes, in the last month I have been ganked a total of 3, yes read that again, 3x. It may be worth mentioning that I play 2-8 hrs a day depending on what my life is like. So there have been periods where I have gathered or solo'd for 8 hrs and not been ganked 1x. Anyway, back to my point, every time I did get killed the "murderer" left all my stuff except gold and reagents, because my noob gear is trash to those vets. So far if I get ganked I run back to my corpse and pick up pretty much everything I had and keep going. Anyway, long story short, Darkfall is hardly as dark and unforgiving as it may seem. Yes, you can lose all your stuff, but it's all easily replacable anyway even for a noob (as I admittedly am).
TLDR - Rez, rinse, and repeat more cautiously than before. Don't let it get to you. After two weeks you can have stacks of everything a noob needs stored up in your bank.

I'll never get why some people go through such devastation when they lose things in this game. After playing for a fews hours it becomes apparent that basic equipment is so easy to come by. Hell, in the beginning I was just selling off all of the bulk equipment I had just to keep some space in the bank.
And yes, the number one thing to remember when playing this game is to never carry something you are unwilling to lose. Don't bring out the china until you have adequate replacements.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
Keep trying. As others said you get lots fo replacement gear so dying isn't that bad. Also I have managed to flee quite often. Just gotta be aware of your surroundings. Always keep an eyee out and your speakers on. Sound is often the first thing that alerts you to an enemy.
sounds like another EVE to me. you have to have a lot of time on your hands to play these games. if you have a life, quit before you invest too much.
Oh please thats a thing even I would complain about, the full loot is one of the main features which characterise this game.
The things you lost are hardly worth anything anyway, but if you have such a problem with losing pixeles I suggest to get some guts or leave the game alone.
I don't think OP's problem with DarkFall is that he lost his loot, but rather HOW he lost it. New Players are unable to defend themselves for several months, they get killed so easily by Veterans and Veterans can catch up anytime with Bunnyhopping.
New Players can't:
1:Kill the Vet.
2:Run away on foot from the Vet
3:Run away on a mount from the Vet
The only thing that's left for them is to stand still and wait to get killed/ganked. Any effort of running away is futile for the first few weeks.
That's what seems to be OP's issue with the game. Loot is too easy to come across to matter that much. But being completly defenseless without any possibility of survival is ludicrous.
Noobs caught alone with no friends should die. This is an MMO. Make friends and play with them. If you are going to be alone and are a noob then you best turn up your sound volume and pay attention to approaching enemies. You will escape many a death this way. You win by staying alive.
LOL
Something every new player experiences . ... usually many times if you are as unfortunate as I was.
FFS though its easy to get away from fights usually. It just takes some practice.
I almost quit in the beginning but the game turned out totally different than I expected. It is fun to lose everything as you will eventually learn when you rarely die if you keep playing. You get a rush that no other game can provide. You will be challenged more than any other game. You will not die nearly as often the more that you die.
Player lag . .. bunny hopping . .. mounts . ... water-logging .... MFing parry skill!!!
You fcked up. Learn from your mistakes.

Slightly unrelated but, what do you think of Bunny Hopping in DarkFall?
Love hate relationship. I think it is a creative use of game mechanics but I hate when other people better than me at it get away. I wish heavier armour added more layers to the game in the sense that you cant swim as good and bunnyhopping , levitation and knockback effects are not as effective.
In UO everyone moved at the same speed. You had a chance to escape if you wanted to.
If the guy could 1 hit kill him and then dry looted him he is a jerk plain and simple. I love and am currently subbed to DF. It draws those kinds of players as well. Most people who are that powerful will kill my guy when he is mining. . take the ore and leave the pickaxe. food etc. Last night someone even left my gold on me. 57 sure. . but I was pretty happy to see it
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Tried the trial. don't mind dying, it is the 2 minute wait to respawn and server drops that killed me.
I really see a great game that will appeal to people who don't mind losing all their gear because gear is not what it is about in DF, it is about the skills. To bad the engine is not up to the concept.
""But Coyote, you could learn! You only prefer keyboard and mouse because that's all you've ever known!" You might say right before you hug a rainforest and walk in sandals to your drum circle where you're trying to raise group consciousness of ladybugs or whatever it is you dirty goddamn hippies do when you're not busy smoking pot and smelling bad."
Coyote's Howling: Death of the Computer
Eve requires very little time. It has real-time skill training.
I love both Darkfall and Eve, but I don't have a lot of time to play between college and work. Progression in Darkfall is painful for me, progression in Eve is easy. About the most casual friendly game you can imagine, if you can wrap your head around it.
Let me elaborate.
I would get killed, then I had to wait for a bar to crawl across the screen, once this bar was done the I had to wait for a load screen to be back at the spawn stone.
Maybe 2 minutes is not right, maybe more like a minute or 90 seconds.
I get a crash to desktop with the error connection to server dropped, really dont know what else to call it but a server drop.

After about 10-20 seconds you can press spacebar to release your death. You dont have to wait for the whole bar.
It makes sense. I asked because you mentionned how players who are alone should die, which reminded me of the many players on ForumFall in favor of the current Bunny Hopping system and stated as a reason that it allows them to escape zerg when they are solo. I always found that funny, so I had to verify.

As for your server drops... I never get 'em (always stable at 30-40 ping) so no comment.
MS made Asheron call 1 and it did well with full loot and its still around, it did have like an insurance , is what people call it today but they had death items, but you still could lose alot or all if you where not smart about it, the game has been around since 99, now turbine owns it, big company , they have done nothing but shit out it since day 1 but in its prime it was a great game and had plenty of subs.,
The game is still around, games with full loot can do well and people do want them , not 2 million subs worth because gamers today cry if they break a nail, but these items you replace in 2 seconds so its no big deal... MO, DFO, people just ahte losing an item period, or hate losing as they take it as... So they rage quit, well guess what you can kill them as well, you may get beat down today but tomorrow you can do it back and get better loot off someone than a mob and make up for what ya lost.. and then some.
I have done that time and time again lost and lost and lost , now I gain more than I lose in these games so its no big deal also get in a guild most will help u get stuff to get ya going. Gear is no biggy to lose...
I have to agree with this here ^^
As I've posted elsewhere, I've even been given stuff like mounts and plate armor (handy to a noob) by players who ganked me after I sent them a tell.
You could say something like "Wow, you one-shotted me. How long you been playing?" or "How much HP do you have? I hardly damaged you." Most of the time they will answer with some good advice like where to pve with less chance of being ganked or give you some stuff they don't need.
Sometimes there are people who just enjoy killing new players, but I have found them to be a very small minority and if you care enough, it's pretty easy to find players who would love to help you hunt them down and kill them. It's up to you how you want to handle it.
