All the people who say EvE are nuts. If hardcore means someone who has played the game for almost a decade basically autoatacking you and winning simply because of length of time playing the game. Then yeah, eve would be pretty hardcore.
Now if you mean attack anyone, any play anywhere. Lineage 2 is by far the game to beat for pvp. It simply cannot be beat. Watch for tera as an upcomming pvp mmo.
Actually your the one who has no clue becuase you refused to learn the game mechanics, should you engage an enemy is your opponent short range or long, can you kite him or do you have to close in as close as possible at high speed so his guns cant track.
Does the enemey have support if we out gun them but they have logicistic ships should I engage.
Skills let you have access to different ships but after about 4 months if trained right you will be just as good as any other person in in t1 and maybe one t2 ship.
Eve is very much about tactics and teritorial warfare. Sometimes its dull , why becuase losing a ship is a bitch and you want to make the enemy engage you on your own terms not on theres.
Eve aint for everybody but dont call it simplistic.
Now if I am not mistaken in Lineage 2 dont you just auto attack and run in cricles around people as well, and also what chance in lineage 2 do I ahve of beating maxed lvl character if I am lvl 1.
Originally posted by Phry for PVP .. only Eve really handles PVP well, from small to large scale fights, or even small scale fights that 'escalate' ... but if your not into tactical based combat (in space ships) then.. i'd say Planetside, its a dated game now, but... its the only other game next to Eve that handles large scale battles.. and tbh.. any pvp that doesnt involve 100 v100 + etc.. can't be called large scale most of the various Fantasy games that claim to be PVP focused, can't even support more than 50 combatants.. and even that many often creates serious lag, and for those that can't even handle that many.. meh.. waste of space.. and i include WOW in that category as regards PVP.. much as i like WOW .. the way it handles PVP is totally rubbish.. Few .. and very few at that.. games really handle PVP well.. most games do seem to cater to the carebear mentality...
Umm yea bet me to Planetside, its really the only game besides EvE thats makes pvp "masssive"
Guild wars may be very unbalanced at times with certain builds winning out, but arenanet does a good job of nerfing these and keeping the game very competitive. Random Arenas still occupy my time.
Eve just cant be beat in open pvp. I truly think that no game can match its scale or the fun that comes with blowing up an enemies ship.
Tera: social/political system confirmed and engaging combat mechanics, not digging the instancing for pvp though e.g. battlegrounds - but it may be implemented in a interesting fashion
ArcheAge: player created content, housing and whatnot, also sea battles and territorial battles.
GW2: mentioned something about world vs world pvp but haven't seen any more info on that.
Rift: could be fun, they mentioned opening rifts in opposing territories but I haven't read much else.
I tend to favor mechanics that allow territorial strife and user created content so ArcheAge is a strong contender for me. Looking forward to these new releases and I'm sure at least one of them will bring some untz untz to the pvp table.

Hmm.
I have once tried one of these high xp freeshards for L2 and I did not get the impression that L2 PvP is really that much fun.
Thanks to overenchantments, there was just no balance between damage and hitpoints/defense.
Apart from Eve there are nothing but outdated games really
So what ? Outdated mainly compiles to: graphics lag wont be an issue. And probably the network code is also quite tolerant to bad connections. Both are good things to have in PvP.
Best PVP ever is the Original Godfather of all MMORPGS Meridian 59 .
Nothing has come close and i dont think ever will do.
You die you drop all your equip lose a level and lose %'s on all your skills. I have seen skillfull players take on 6 people get 2 kills and then get away.
You can still play this now and its free , but this is doom style graphics .
2nd would be Original DAOC , i was addicted to the RVR and Ganking.

This guy has Zero idea what hes talking about when it comes too Eve... I recently played, made a new character.. and within a matter of days i had me some kills on the kill board...
Infact this guy is so opinionated, Anything he posts holds Zero Water in my book...
If you decide eve, do some reasearch, check the forums. and try too join Eve-Uni corp. good training on how too pvp for starters. i taught my self the hard way.. lots of lost ships, lots of rerolled toons.. etc..
But what this guy doesnt understand Is say you want too fly a rifter, and you max your rifter skills.... now lets say you encounter another rifter.. but this pilots been playing for 5 years.... Hes gna have the Exact Same Skills as you... because lets face it... the Rifter doesnt requrie all that much... so in the end, you have as good of a chance as any for a kill... Because you both have maxed skills X Y Z.
Infact, i took down a Hurricane with a Incursus and a Rifter friend, After about a week of playing Eve...
Here is my list of major MMORPGs I have played in order from Best to Worst with comments:
1) Warhammer Online:
Four Tiers of PvP/RvR divided by levels insures that the PvP is fair, you do not have to be uber geared to be competitive.
However, one side (Order/Destro) may dominate your server and make RvR frustrating, so check the server you are creating your toon on first.
Also, your PvP/RvR is not limited to oRvR, you can join some really great and rewarding SC's as well.
Unfortunately, with the latest patch players are mixed on the new RvR system.
2) World of Warcraft:
With Cataclysim and the new PvP tiers, Battlegrounds will be more fun. Prior to CATA, even without the re-balancing you still had a good chance of being very competitive without uber gear, which really isnt excuse cuz good gear is easy to obtain in WoW.
However, just like WAR, one side or the other may dominate your server, so choose wisely.
3) Star Trek Online:
if you can get into a good pre-made group with a good guild to back it, PvP can be fun. Otherwise, do not bother.
4) Lord of the Rings Online:
Monster play is LOTROs PvP/RvR system...which if you want to play a monster, is available at early levels, which then adjust your monsters level up to be competitive with the level 40 players using their toons. Unfortunately, to play your toon versus other players who are playing monsters, you must be level 40. As a result, PvP has low pops in its instances.
5) Age of Conan:
AoC could have been the best for PvP, but FunCom ruined it as AoC is the most gear gated PvP around.
Unless you played from launch, you will be behind a gear curve the later you joined the game as the later you joined AoC the higher the chance more players will out gear you. Also, mini games are ruined...pre-mades dominate, and sabotage runs rampant in PUGs. For example, guilds have made a hobby out of creating pre-mades then having individuals saturate the PUGS and sabotage them by standing there and doing nothing.
Also, these same guilds have taken over servers and zones, and will gank you mercilessly during PvE, and the punishment for someone 20 or more levels above you killing you is a joke.
EVE and Warhammer are my top PvP picks. Since OP said EVE was not his/her choice, so Warhammer...
Little risk, which I miss from EVE, but there is constant PvP. You don't have to PvE to level up like in DF or to make money like EVE. Huge fights every day. New RvR components have also been encouraging smaller 10 x 10 or 5 x 5 fights.
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
Dark age of camelot, hands down. 3 realms fighting over frontiers in massive battles and plenty of small scale competetive pvp as well. it's an old game but it was first with many of the things we take for granted these days. pve isnt exactly exciting but it's built around PVP as endgame.
Warhammer online is the spiritual successor of DAOC but it downscaled to two factions and it lost a lot of its dynamic rvr struggle in doing so. pve is greatly improved from daoc but rvr is a shadow of it's former self (still on of the better if you can't get past some of the things that make daoc slightly dated)
i suppose if i am mention warhammer i should mention Aion as well, as warhammer feels closer to aion than daoc, despite the many differences. 3 realms makes all the difference i suppose.
Since the invention of the internet the worlds rotation has been solely propelled by English teachers rolling over in their graves.

Since the invention of the internet the worlds rotation has been solely propelled by English teachers rolling over in their graves.
Tanks are the only class in that game that have any lifespan. Everyone else dies within a matter of seconds once engaged. That piece of crap game focuses on damage and a complete lack of meaningful defense for anyone but tanks. Over done crowd control and to make it worse, more meaningful crowd control on tanks and melees than on ranged classes who really need it. Add to that, the constant need to respawn becuase your healers are too busy trying to keep everyone alive, they rarely have the time or the action points to ressurect you in a big battle. On top of it's many mechanical flaws, population inbalance is a huge problem that could have been dealt with much better with a third faction. As it is now, Destruction dominates most of the servers and in most of the tiers. It gets so bad that it is not uncommon to find a zone go from busy to empty as the underdog side gets fed up and log off or move to alteranate characters in another tier. Who gives a damn about that stupid "Against All Odds" buff if you can't live long enough to benefit from it.
There are many good reasons why that game tanked within the first few months and even better reasons why it's still hemmorhaging players that were once faithful fanbois. The new changes are even worse, at least for casual to moderate gamers, but the hardcores are loving it, of course.
I'm suprised no one seems to have mentioned Lineage II.
Gives you the best PvP experience - by far. Imho.
Actually Edli mentioned it.
The problem with topics like this is that they are so subjective.
Lineage 2 has great pvp. If you are just starting the game it might not be great pvp. I have seen many people start L2 only to become discouraged because they couldn't zip up there with the big boys.
Also, for some, having a lvl 75+ picking off lvl 20's or lower or "whatever" is not considered "good pvp".
For some that really is what pvp is about, working your way up no matter the forces arrayed against you and eventually being part of it all.
For some it's about being evenly matched. For some it's about being hopelessly outmatched but being able to prevail.
For some it's about battle grounds and and even playing field and for some it's about roaming the land looking for wartags.
Too subjective.
For the record I've had the most pvp fun in L2 and Warhammer. L2 for the scope of the pvp, for the feeling that it really mattered.
Warhammer for just quick pvp fun action packed fun.
Your mileage may vary.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Out is sadly either DaoC (RvR) or Guildwars (arenas).
Upcoming is somewhat unsure but GW2s World Vs World Vs World, Guild Vs Guild and arenas seems to make the next game with great PvP. There are some talk about World of darkness online also but very little is still known about it so anything is just pure guesses, GW2 have at least some hands on and a lot of info.
Among 2011s releases (Rift, GW2, TOR, TSW and TERA) is at least my guess that GW2 will deliver best PvP. All the other games seems to focus a lot more on PvE even if they have PvP (well, possibly except TSW).
There is also DCU but it seems more console based, might be worth a look anyways, it seems to be pretty PvP focused too.

Well, yeah, that's probably right. Though, I just enjoy the feeling that I can spank anyone, anywhere at any given time if I want to. And that your leveling progress is being delayed, well, imho that's just making the game a little tougher and a bit more of a challange, which isn't that bad in my opinion.
Same, for example, happens in RFO, where enemy-factions camp your spots and invade your race-territories. Happens you're unable to level, therefore you call your race to protect you and defend your land. All of this adds certain excitment in my opinion.

SKYeXile
TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.
It's probably worth breaking it down, here's a stab (to the best of my experience):
Faction-PvP: DAOC
Competitive-Scenario PvP: GW
Casual-PvP with a little of both of above: WAR
Open-World PvP: EvE and... Darkfall (??)
Future?

You can try DF if you can bear the super twitch unplayable controls.
Apart from that you are up to wait one of the next release RIFT or TERA, they both pretend to have some promising pvp, so you'll have to wait and see.
the most fun i have had with PvP is in RF:online <-- but the games just bad now, need to CS to be able to do stuff/ numbers are low
Future releases that may have fun pvp:

LOL, I forgot about it (But my DaoC vote still holds, M59 and for that matter Lineage had really fun PvP at the time but DaoC still had the best.
