I posted this as a question to someone on another post, but I think the question is strong enough to deserve it's own thread.
what game represents the pinnacle of what you think a "deep" or "intelligent" game to be?
I hear the term 'dumbed down' thrown around quite a bit on this forum, so I want to get a better grip on what qualifies as a game that isn't "dumbed down."
Don't confine yourself to just MMORPGs. Any title from any genre from any era of video gaming. And please stick to specific games and not your personal criteria that has not been attempted in, or is completely absent from, Video gaming.

-Europa Universalis III
-Darkfall
Well, it's always releative, and requires comparison which is what makes it difficult at times to pin down, since perspectives will vary.
For me, WoW was dumbing down Everquest
Vanguard under Sigil was dumbed down under SOE
Civ5 was dumbed down compared to Civ4
It's hard to compare though, because it's all subjective. And honestly, sometimes a game gets dumbed down and improves in the eyes of most people who want a 'fun' game, but don't find 'fun' in anything challenging or smartened up.
According to a Facebook quiz, I'm a genius.
EvE... also the Orginal Bards Tale
my dad mapped the enitre game and I have to use them to play it. In the old days shit was rough
This really is subjective and a matter of perspective. IMO: Darkfall + Eve.
Steam: Neph
Dwarf Fortress.
It's by far the most complex, deep, and downright fun games I've ever played.
Good points. I think SWG was dumbed down(i.e. tried to made more fun and accesible) with the NGE. I found it to be one of the deepest MMORPGS I have ever played in nearly every aspect that was ruined by an attempt to make it more enjoyable to a wider audience. Obviously this has been said a million times but I wanted to add it to this thread as it is applicable to the discussion.
Pong - when you start at the bottom, you can only go up.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
I vote for EVE.
Falcon 4.0....hell, just look at the manual!
Now, everyone will cry 'Not an MMO dude'. But that is kind of my point. Look at that book and ask yourself, do I wanna work that hard at a video game?
while I personally enjoy Falcon, most people will answer 'Hell No, I already have a job!"

LOL that is spectacular. I must have it!
Eve or Anarchy Online.
I think these games were amung the most awesome games I'd ever played that in my opinion were never dumbed down and offered little support and help, just lots of clues ^.^

I've never played it but I hear Demon's Souls for PS3 or whatever it's called is pretty challenging. As far as MMO's go they've always been pretty much dumbed down from a gameplay standpoint. IMO older MMO's basically replaced challenge with time sinks. The only dumbing down that's happened is the removal of those time sinks. That's just my perspective though.

I want to disqualify The Bard's Tale. Most of the game was fake difficulty. Including an anti-magic dungeon level full of teleporters and spinners at a time when most people had to draw their own maps by hand is more cheap than deep.
This was/is one of the best games ever, as far as flight games go. This and the apache one
I vote for Darkfall too. It isn't deep or anything but you can confidently say it will never be dumbed down, it cannot be more dumb as it is now.
Joking aside, EVE Online stands for very complex game. The most complex MMO ever created, imo.
'Dumbed down' isn't really well defined term so people indeed will suggest games based on their preference depending on their very own 'dumbed down' definition.
Just play the game that entertains you and you enjoy, that is all that matters.
Played EVE for 5 years and still failed to see anything deep or intelligent about it.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

To put it in a nutshell, our society is about to hit the fan, grades are dropping, obesity is going up,childhood the USA is going to lose its super power status before too long, but hey, as long as we have a cheap method to babysit our kids, all will be well no?
Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
I think it is difficult to create an MMORPG that maintains it's depth and intelligence. The problem is with the community. Most of them lack depth or intelligence. If you introduce the deepest and most intelligent persistent and user influenced game to shallow and vapid morons you will get the bastard child of that game and that is my argument for MMO abortions. The problem is not necesarily creating the deep world it is maintaining it despite the catcalls from the lowest common denominator.
With that being said, nearly anything by Paradox Interactive will make your brain grow. It is a fact.
This is how I feel as well, and those two games are also my choices.
To Paradoxy: you should have kept that to yourself lol

I bought that when it came out, think I still have the book somewhere. I believe I could actually fly a jet after playing that game! It was really accruate, the amount of toggles in the cockpit, the angle of take-off. It was crazy! It's rated T not because of anything violent (other than shooting other plans), but probable because it's so accurate it's not approperiate for a kid to play, because he'd throw his joystick through the monitor!
That was one of the last great flight-sims!
MMO wise I'd say Eve. But that's based on perspective. eve can be deep or shallow depending on play style.
none MMO wise. Armored core was very deep when it came to mech building.
Rpg wise. Star Ocean 2 was the deepest RPG I can think of with 2 story arcs depending on which main character you play, and 81 different endings. Most people dispute this with Marrowwind, or oblivion, but really, they're just too young, or don't like/understand japanese culture enough to "get" it. Oblivion... lol. Star Ocean 2 is the only game besides MMOs where I've spent 400 hours+ playing it.
D&D Online, back when I played it before F2P, was very complex and challenging. The character development options, dungeon and MOB interactions could get somewhat complex. I certainly never felt like I was being coddled.
I've quit EVE multiple times because I got fed up with how parts of the game were 'dumbed down' to appease the PvPers.
I quit cause that first month was killer boring lol
I think f2p has meant it's been dumbed down to appeas the wow crowd, certainly feels like it:(
