The man who mentioned the 20 year span of time was Michael Pachter.  I like the guy, he seems like a cool person and he's very active on GameTrailers, but sometimes he's full of shit.  He can't ever have a conversation without praising Blizzard and Apple.  No matter what you're talking about, it comes back to Apple ruling the mobile market (including portable gaming) and Blizzard being the greatest developer ever, destroying any other puny dev that tries to make an MMO.  Like I said, he's a cool guy and he IS very knowledgeable about the gaming industry but he's definitely biased and I'd take anything he says regarding Blizzard or Apple with a grain of salt.

i'm sorry but what exactly does WoW need to hype up lol?

I doubt this game will even be around in 20 years, but still. Guild wars 1 was released around the same time as WoW and in all seriousness how many people still play that game actively?

i'm sure if you ask the average WoW player, they've never even heard of gw2 or SWTOR (well maybe star wars). Both these games will make a dent on WoW like all past mmo's have...

I also read it as no game will have the same success as WoW (for sure not another mmo) in the next 20 years. But who knows, i'm hoping they come out with virtual reality stuff in the next 10 years.

First off, analystis can go [censored]. No anaylist has gotten a single thing right in the last ten years, and I doubt that some self appointed expert can make it happen now.

That said, it is likely that WOW could last 20 years and beyond. I mean, look at Ultima Online and Everquest. They still have dedicated people playing that game, and they are still making expansions and getting the occasional new player. Games can have amazing lifetimes, as the NES ROM movements can attest to.

Will WOW be played 20 years from now. Very likely, and it won't look a thing like it was, or even as it is right now. It'll evolve and change and expand, and people will continue to be loyal to the game, just like many other game franchises. Especially with the strong communities that WOW tends to build.

It's not a question of technology surpassing the game. It's a question of the social ties inside the game that will give it lasting power.

About wow effect and ppl playing in the next 20 year, I can say that wow it's the next TIBIA. Tibia probably made a huge sucess when it was released, just like wow, just like Aion (ppl couldn't even lvl in the newbies city because it was so crowded), just like that other mmo that had the most expensive virtual item (300k of U$ if I'm not wrong). But for real? Wow may have a solid fan base (just like tibia...), but that does not mean that's the best game so far. Blizzard make awesome games but it takes sooooooooooooooo fuuuuuuuuuuuucking long to bring something new, just like Star Craft (12 years?), just like Diablo (8years?) , just Like Warcraft -_- and just like the boring WoW. I don't even remember when the first one came, but since then it's the same boring thing. You can't fly and fight @ the same time, you can't ride and fight @ the same time. New expansion = new dungeons + loot + 5lvl cap. Even the bloody mercenary D&D online have better dungeons. not just kill something, go hide and kill something, go hide and drag some boss -__________-. And @ the end game? Not going to bring that up. Wheres the new technology? Everyone wants to destroy the whole cenary like in Vindictus (it seems that Diablo 3 will do it, but when? 2030?), have to dodge or parry with precision like in Tera, no the boring thing to stay still and hiting your keyboard for macros -__-. One thing probably it's sure, Wow, will have the best C.G. scenes just like Final Fantasy, but the game does not seem to keep it up with the C,G, quality...

Being a WoW fan i will say this is bullshit.

It will be good enough if it survives 6 more years, and will probably go free to play at some point.

    Rawr.

Considering that video games have only been around since the late 70's that is a pretty ridiculous statement.

maybe WOW will evolve and still exist in some form but something tells me there will be some major landmarks for the video games industry in the next 20 years.

WoW took an early foothold just when the genre was gaining momentum. However, I do think they will only hold it for another 2 or 3 years maximum. The last few years' one failed release after another and the population death as well as complete server shut down of the old goodies (SWG, EQ1, AC2, etc) have finally started telling game developers that copying Warcraft will never take their subscriptions away. Developers are finally starting to dip back into the player base that enjoys finding their own path in the game rather than following a certain class and having a very linear character progression. There have been a few releases that kinda blended the two sides but too heavily weighed the linear quality as well as a few that are in development right now that have lots of hype. None of them have really tapped too much into the aforementioned player base, but there are two that have stood out in my mind. Google "xsyon mmorpg", find their website, and then click the big features list. Read through it and PM me if you have any questions. One thing that really stands out is the devs, however few, are more determined to combine what the players want with their own directions for the game than any other team of developers for <insert name of random large scale/big dev team MMO here>.  The other game I've noticed is Perpetuum Online, which has actually just released last week or so and is only 10$/month for a month-to-month sub and even has a 3$ for 4 days trial sub. Obviously, if you pay for more time at once, you save a good amount of money. Pertpetuum is basically EvE but on the ground and mixed with the Mech Warrior games and elements of Xsyon but much more heavily EvE/Mech Warrior. Also, you can PM me if you have any questions or need help getting going in either game =)

World of Warcraft is still the industry standard and with the release of Cataclysm, Blizzard has proven that they can completely reinvision their now six year old game to compete with and in some ways, surpass recently released MMORPGs as well as MMORPGs currently in development.

I see WoW lasting awhile yet, but whether or not it has enough legs to last twenty years remains to be seen.  My money says it doesn't.

name one AAA style game that has existed for 20 years.   You can't can you?

AAA games are not meant to last forever, things change including peoples tastes and technology.

Whoever tries to predict stuff more than 2 years away in this market is kidding themselves.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

  • sloebersloeber Member UncommonPosts: 504

lolz bigtime.....analists cant even predict the weather more then 2 or 3 days acurate, let alone they can analize 20years of ICT technology......makes me lolzor big time :)

  • TerranahTerranah Member UncommonPosts: 3,575

I think it will definitely be around 5 years from now.  10 years is a stretch, but it's possible.  20 years is hard to believe, but if they pulled it off that would be a neat trick.

  • DKLondDKLond Member RarePosts: 2,273

It will probably reign for a few more years, then it will start to dwindle.

20 years from now - the top MMO?

Not unless they completely redo everything from scratch, basically creating an entirely new game - and call it World of Warcraft.

just got done playing my goblin shaman, havuing a blast except for the fact i cant get a damn dp at 5am on the server i rolled on cause they didnt open a new server. whenever i get bored i launch my belt missile

  • sacredfoolsacredfool Member UncommonPosts: 849

It is obvious the analysts have studied the last 20 years of MMOs, and their development, and this is how they came up with the results...

    Oooohhhhh...... waitt......

The statement is ludicrous. it's like saying "The communist party of China has been leading the country for last 90 years, so it will also be leading it in 2500"

Wow was launched in 2004. More than 6 years ago.

Who would have thought it would make the top money game on all systems combined in ... 2010.

A normal PC game is considered a success when it rakes in 10 million ... once. Blizzard makes 1.4 billion this year alone from their "mmorpg".

If I would have said in 2004 that WOW would be the most succesful game (not MMORPG but ALL games included)  in 2010, you would have laughed and ROFL.

Now this is not saying it will be King money maker within 10 or 20 years, but it shows "this" didn't happen before (and perhaps not in the next 20 years either).

A lot of you are reading this wrong... or simply not reading it.

They're not saying that in 20 years WoW will still be the number one, most popular game.

They are saying that in the next 20 years, no game will dominate the market in the way that WoW has.  No game will have such a sweeping effect on pop culture.  This is completely true, and I'm fine with it.

I'd rather there be 4-5 awesome games with 2-3 million players, catering to a variety of playstyles, with dozens of others content with 300k players for the niche markets.  The genre, and the players, will be better off.

  • worldspin85worldspin85 Member Posts: 187

wow how sad i feel bad for those who are over the age of 16 and still play WOW . I do blieve though that the game will still be in a healthy state 20 years later.

It will lose atleast %40 of its base the first 3 months after the release of swtor and or GW2,  but WoW will hold 1 million strong for a very long time.  20 years is definitely pushing it.  10 years is a better time frame for some servers to still be active.

I'm just posting because I'm tired of seeing this topic on the front page of the site.  Stop replying.  No one cares.  It's not an interesting topic.

Yea sorta like how people still mention Pacman from time to time? No one actually plays it but hey!

I actually do on an older version of one of these:

It's hilarious short-termed fun for less than an hour. It brings you back.

Maybe in 2 decades a niche of ancient WoW faithfuls will still be playing on an equally bizarre sort of setup.

"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

I love how WoW releases hyped up numbers of subscribers and people fall for it hook, line, and sinker.  12 million strong!

Reality check: 50-60% of that number are dead subscriptions, another 15-25% are the gold seller accounts, and the rest are actual players. 3 million active players is still an impressive number, but nowhere near the 12 million that people love spouting off about.  For those that ask "Why would Blizzard hype up their subscription totals?", I will not even give a reply. You are too far down the food chain to comprehend the simple marketing aspect.

We have some really strong projects coming out,  some from high production studios,  others with very different yet strong focuses on other types of western gaming genres.  I don't see WoW having much of a stranglehold once the market starts splitting hairs between MMORPGs and MMOFPS,  MMOAGs and things like that.

The MMO genre will see a huge "rebirth"  in the form of other types of MMO games.

keep on dreaming.wow will only be replaced if blizzard plan to make a new one. all other companies are not even capable of making mmorpg.

refering to comment made on the first page..,

why on earth does xfire always get put into these topics... xfire ratings don't prove anything in the scale of things. No one knows how many of the total wow users use it and how many from other mmo's use it.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

WoW will NOT last another 20 years.. i mean come on, which uber fan thought this one up?

It won't be solely down to any specific game released, it'll simply be down to people getting bored with it over time and because of tech advances and other such things.

@those who will comment about my "get bored of it" statement... people have been getting bored of it for the last 2 years or so and either leaving completely, sticking around till they find something else or by just popping on it from time to time.
