Man this gets old. Has ANYONE here played in any other MMO beta? Well if you did was it EASY to level? Ok lets take the MMO RIFT. Did you know you can get to level 20 in a few hours. OMG the game now sucks. LOL THEY ALL DO THIS!. Did you know you kill this kill that.. pick up this pick up that. OMG you do the same thing at LEVEL 20. And HAHA in WORLD OF WARCRAFT your not doing this at 10-20-40-80? What mmo you dont do this?
Dude PLAY the LIVE version then come back and cry how you dont like it. Dont use the word HONEST when you say in the same line "game that might have been" .. wow
People try the game.. 30 days free. If you dont like it dont play anymore. But to not play ANY mmo because someone crys how they didnt like it IN BETA.. BETA should say it all. Wait about 3-6 months then look at the game.. lol
The problem is he based everything off his supposed "4-5" months in beta. Last I checked beta hadn't been going on for 4-5 months not even early beta maybe 3months is more of what you are looking for referring to the OP. He already played the live version didn't you read his post? I mean it is obvious he has thuroughly played ever aspect of the game and then formulated his extensive review based on the research he has done.
The review IS accurate for the level 1-20. Anyone who is not blinded by fanboyism can tell that. The game IS NOT significantly different than it was from end of beta.
The only thing that could possibly be disputed the end game content and from what people say his account is accurate.
If it is not please explain why the description of the raids are inaccurate.
The guy did not even get into the issues of the serious balance problems and stability/crashing issues there were introduced at end of beta. He could have easily trashed it more.
The trashing of this review is pathetic. Fanboyism and an apologeia for non-critical thinking at its worst. Try it out because its 30 days free? Are you serious? You gotta spend $50-60. You have to base it on release when you have a recent open Beta? Gimme a break.
The quests are extremely formulaic anyone saying otherwise is simply lying. Yet people want to bash him for saying the truth? Get a grip.
The proper response is to mention that the boss fight at the end of each "episode" tends to be rather intersting and that for comic the boss fight is where its at anyway.
Ridicule and ad hominen over substance that is all you got. The review is neagative but even handed and fairly accurate. Stop being little bitches about it.
Game was pushed back in November they were in Closed Beta by then. There were multiple rounds of beta. Some guy doesn't remember exactly how long or when he got in, who frigging cares?
Well obviously he must be lying even though absolutely any one who played beta knows that his account is 80% accurate even if biased in a way they may not agree with.
First I never said he was inacurate or lying I simply do not remember the beta starting 4-5months ago. I was in early beta a friend was in and as far as I could tell on the PC only about 20 of us and not one of us was able to get to 30 till the end of beta. I love how people who find a problem with a post or thread immediatly get the label of "fanboy" . So when those that call others "fanboys" or "fanboyism" what should we call you "nerds united"?

It is so funny seeing so many fanbois bashing the OP about how there is a huge difference between Beta version and live version of the game.
Seriously. People act as if there is going to be some secret additions to a game in the span of a few days and anyone who played the beta has no clue to what the game is going to be like on launch day. As if the game has changed so much in the last few days it completely changes the game and invalidates all beta experiences.
Open beta is more about marketing than anything else. It represents the companies best efforts to make a great first impression and start positive word of mouth.
As someone who has been pessimistic about this game since day one, the OP clearly states why he rates the game so low. However all I'm reading from the flamers is "how long have you played & it was beta noob." The OP listed some major flaws (takes about a week to reach max level), however nobody has yet to really disagree with his specific reasons. That leads me to believe the OP.
*correction... someone did point out that you can skip the cut scenes in the intro.
Wow a honest review with fail in the same line. "the game that might have been" lol
Played the launched version did you? Get past level 10 did you.
IF you can point out any differences between today and 5 days ago I will gladly delete the review. There are no differences in what the game was a week ago, the only difference is now you get to pay for it
New options in the character creator, they've changed balancing quite a bit on mobs and powers, at least at the low levels. Low level mobs seem to take more damage, but put out less. So far, from my limited experience in the live game (though I've played extensively in beta) they seem to have scaled down the boss damage a bit too. They are still challenging, but not so much that you'll get rolled.
Doesn't feel like a brand new game, but the combat feels pretty solid. Vsync breaks acrobatics when turned off, had 1 CTD when I alt+tabbed, but no other graphical or technical problems, and I played for a good few hours, at high speed as I knew exactly what to do in that short time.
Don't bother deleting the review.... your honest OPINION is valid.
What I don't understand is how someone can stick around a game for 5 months, and then give it a 4/10. Just cognitive dissonance there.
Obviously you enjoyed yourself, and now just because your cycle with the game has ended, you trash it?
I guess if the only criteria is that the games makes you want to play it forever, then 4/10 is warranted.
I do believe this is your honest opinion, as in you honestly believe it. But you need to try to step back and understand fairness and objectivity, which has little to do with honesty.
As it is, this opinion is trash for anyone trying to find a fun game to play, unless the only criteria is somehow find a game that is fun forever.

People stick around betas, because games change quickly during development and player feedback. No one expects perfection in beta and as long as the game moves towards fullfilling its potential then all is good.
The original poster makes no secret he enjoyed parts of the game, but once beta ended found that too many of the problems didn't get resolved to make the game worthy of solid review numbers. Beta wasn't just the end of his free time in the game. It is also the end of making major changes to the game before players have invested their time and money into it.
As kill quest go i think they are pretty well done. The vary up with different things to do as you kill. That said i think you are right, they are all kill quests that are almost all varied up the exact same.
My only gripe with the review is he leaves out the part where they have said repeatedly that they do not want to make a game where you are grinding levels. That is why you can rush to the max level but still have stuff to do. I have never said the OP was wrong just had some questions about his 4-5 months and his level 30's since everyone I played with didn't get to 30 till they opened it up right before they closed the beta.

fairly fair review. I have to agree with most of your narrative. I might not have rated as low, since I think many of the issues are issues with many MMOs that are out. So its a matter of comparing DCUO with other MMOs, or with some objective ideal I have in my head I suppose.
Anyway, I'll log in when I get home and maybe see you all in game.

Hm, I was hoping to read some reviews and gather opinions. I see someone wrote one so thank you OP. And since i havent been following this MMO much at all I guess that makes me pretty unbiased.
I didnt beta this game but I did beta many other MMOs (most recent one was Champions). So I do consider a beta review pretty valid to an extent. Cause from previous experience, the only things that tends to change from beta->release is usually balance changes...
I'm thinking I'm going to wait a few weeks anyway before I make a decision to purchase. This way I can get a better sense of what people feel about it overall. I want to see if they start nerfing everyone to death (aka like Champions did), etc.

I just went through the tutorial. This is a hack and slash for 5 year olds. I was pretty sure that's about what it was going to be, but I wanted to check it out first hand. I'll cancel. Runs good though.

I was wondering why there were all these 5 year olds on the PvP servers.. NOW I know.

Come on dude at least play one of the more interesting boss battles. The two flashes vs Gorilla Grodd or the Circe one where you get turned into a gigantic Rhino or even queen bee (although her hypno pollen is really just a standard continous add thing).
I think the two flashes as villain is one of my favorite boss battles and one of the better ones I have seen in an MMO.
You played the tutorial. That means you got one power and possibly two combo. Therefore you have not done any intersesting interactions with powers or combos. And you are essentially invincubile during tutorial so you have had no difficulty.
I will say the combat on the PC is considerably worse than the console port of Darksiders. I played that the other day just to compare with my recollections and Darksiders combo feel way way smoother to me than DCU does. But beyond that its decent.
it IS hack and slash. But its not entirely simplistic and there is no way you can completely explore the combat system in the tutorial. The abiltiy descriptions are simply not that good and you have applied almost no synergy.

I disagree with him on replayability. There are a number of intersting combinations you can try and the game is more than just weapon + powerset for building.
I personally think there are MAJOR problems with their character building and that it will receive a serious overhaul in the near future.
But between having multiple weapons skills, Iconic powers and two trees in each powers. There is a lot of replayability compared to most MMOs. Yes you would rehash the same missions. But in MMOs that is what almost every non-sandbox games does even ones with huge amount of people replaying (such as DDO and COH which are reaplayed on alts by a factor of 10 or greater compared to WoW).
Replayability, IMO and in my experience, is more about build diversity than content. And while DCU has serious issues with its powersets and build points, it does have quite alot of potential variants even for people with simplar power/weapon choices.
And in fact I would much prefer a game that went to 30 fairly fast and has a large build diversity than a game where I am forice into one character than takes forever to trick out and mature.

Synergy? Hehe. I guess. It's basically turn things on, turn things off. On. Off. It is more fun than a light switch though, I'll give you that.
Ok guys, I know the game just came out today, I understand that, but I have been in the PC and PS3 beta for 4-5 months now so I know this game pretty well. I am a comic book nerd, I love DC Comics and wanted this game to be the greatest MMO in the world....but its not. DC Universe does not revolutionize the MMO genre in any way shape or form, though the action gameplay is cool it is more like MMO gameplay with an action disguise. Heres the bullet points:
Gameplay: The gameplay is very fun, at first anyways, and it does add a new twist to MMOs, the action gameplay isnt quite as action oriented as I would have liked, its actually more like 2 buttons are action oriented and the rest are traditional MMO. The combo's are waaay to easy to pull off and if they had took the time to add some complicated ones in there it would have given more action players something to look foward to. Plus the game plays awkward with the keyboard and mouse, much better and more natural with a controller. 5/10
Graphics: I never saw a problem with the graphics, if you dont have a great computer you might have to run it pretty low but the graphics are very good for any computer game. 9/10
Story: The story is a DC Universe comic story, it has many alternative story lines but basically you were given powers and now have to try and save the world from a super computer named Brainiac. 7/10
Tutorial: The tutorial is exciting to play through the first time because it really explains the story well, the problem is the tutorial takes about half an hour no matter how good of a player you are (because of cutscenes) and for every character you make you have to hear the same lines over and over again. The tutorial starts off promising but if they had taken the time to add in a skip option it would make this game alot better, by my second character I just didnt want to make anymore because of the tutorial. 2/10
Quests: The quests are called "episodes" in this game, and at first they are very exciting to do, but than I realized they are all the same. You will have to kill 15 of an enemy, than get 10 of an item and 5 of another item (so kill 15 more of a different enemy) than go to an inside mission and defeat a boss. EVERY SINGLE episode follows this formula, while its a good thing that you probably wont run out of episodes but once or twice the episodes are to much alike to be interesting. If they would have thrown in some get accross the city and disarm the bomb with a time limit or something like that it would have added variety, but its like they didnt even try when designing the episodes, the stories can be interesting but its the same objective on every single one. 2/10
Character Customization: This one is hard to write about....the initial character creation is not bad...but it isnt near what we have seen from City of Heroes, Champions Online, Aion and such. You cant customize height and there are only 6 powers to choose from! There are 10 weapons, but 4 of them are useless and most of them are ones you want on 1 character but wont want to try again. Any costume piece you pick up gets added to looks you can go back to again which is cool (i believe we saw a similar system in Everquest?) but from the beginning you cant get your character looking how you want most of the time. The lack of options initially and throughout the game make customization mediocre compared to other games. 4/10
Replay Value: Ok guys, let me warn anyone who has not played this game that even for casual players getting to lvl 30 (max level) takes only about a week or so, I have seen hardcore players get it in a day. 1/10
Verdict: Well guys, this game has many flaws and is not what I, or alot of people thought it would be. The tutorial is a pain to do after the first or second time and when you get to max level there is NOTHING to do. There are like 3 raids you can do, but you do the raids for armor so you can raid. And you PvP....for armor....so you can raid. But they dont give you hardly any raids to do...see the issue? This game will last probably anyone the free month, some people claim its the best game ever and they will play it forever, but in the MMO world if it takes a hardcore player a week to get to max level the game is considered easy, if it takes them a day it is considered laughable. I think the developers worked very hard on the city and getting the voice actors to do the voice's, but not on what players want. The gameplay is a little action, alot of what we have seen over and over again. If your looking for a new MMO home, you wont find it here, in fact after playing for a couple of months I am not getting it, and I could have concluded that after the first month. The developers when they do play the game leave as soon as you find out who they are, the gameplay is mediocre along with the character creation, episodes are repetative and there is a lack of any appeal unless you are a hardcore DC Comics fan (which I am a huuge fan of) but even than its hard to stay with this game. The first month people will probably give it 10/10, but in truth is more like a 4/10
I agree in every single aspect. Granted, I only played until the last beta hour, but I haven't seen a single MMO change 180° around in the few days between beta end and launch, so it's pretty much spot on. And honest indeed. Good to see some people are yet not blinded by DC fanboyism.
I'd add the ABHORRENT UI with 1/10.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Ok how can someone who hasn't played the live version of a game give an honest review of a game that is only what 3 hours old? I understand everyone is entitled to their opinion but come on man really? So how much of the 20-30 content did you play? How were those raids and missions? How cool is the Iconic armor? Did it take you a while to get it? What are all the feats ou were able to unlock in the game past level 20? What are the Raids and Duos like 20-30?
If they played the beta for months, they know the game. I like this game, but I don't try to fanboy it up and discredit his opinion because he played beta and now it's live. Sure, maybe a few small things will be changed, but the core elements are all going to be the same.
In truth I've written as much of a balanced review as well, and I do happen to disagree with a number of his points, such as the longevity of the game, the missions, character customization and the tutorial, which, frankly does exactly what a tutorial is supposed to do.
While I could argue these points, it wouldn't change his opinion of these things. While much of it isn't necessarily wrong a lot seems very narrow. While he may have played for 5 months and hated every minute of it, or wouldn't sub past his first month, I played for 2 months straight and can't wait to log in when I get home.
This is just to get background on you and what sort of games you like.
I think most of your review is pretty fair, except for your tutorial and character customization. You say how amazing the start was for about 4/5ths of that paragraph, but then say it's the same thing. And that gives it a 2/10 after the wonderful comments?
As to the character customization, it seems at the start you have a much more limited customization then CoHs or CO, but as you level and pick up items and buy loot, your customization catches up. I think that's a great idea.
I think anyone just plain blasting you is blinded. The action combat IS fun, sure. But the quests were the EXACT same thing no matter what you did. But at least they were voiced. That was pretty cool.
There is no "rush" to max level. The game levels very, very quickly by design. In fact, it's almost impossible NOT to hit max level quickly.
In my opinion, this game levels just as fast, if not faster, than STO, and is just about as limited/linear in content as Fed side of that game was. And, DCUO only has 30 levels instead of 45, meaning that the OP is right - the nutjobs will hit level cap in a day or two, while a normal player will hit level cap in one or two weeks by playing fairly casually. That's the pacing of the game as established by SOE.
Quest to level at a blistering pace, then instance, farm achievements (feats), and engage in meaningless PvP. That's it, since SOE did not implement anything else in the way of alternate activities. It's got pretty scenery, but no "world" feel.
In my opinion, it's another waste of a good IP. They could have made a much more sophisticated game than this. They didn't.

Dude, with all due respect, if you are looking for indepth game play why the hell are you playing MMOs? Fighters, RTS, sports (irl, not pussy video game sports) exist for a reason. MMOs are for casual play or people who lack lives that need an ego boost.
I agree completely with the Tutorial part, the Tutorial is a pain in the second time you go in it kills any wish that you have to test power sets and weapons as you will have to sit and watch the same shit over and over again...

Synergy? Hehe. I guess. It's basically turn things on, turn things off. On. Off. It is more fun than a light switch though, I'll give you that.
Once upon a time....
I agree in every single aspect. Granted, I only played until the last beta hour, but I haven't seen a single MMO change 180° around in the few days between beta end and launch, so it's pretty much spot on. And honest indeed. Good to see some people are yet not blinded by DC fanboyism.
I'd add the ABHORRENT UI with 1/10.

how is the pvp ??
Couple questions.
Are you a themepark sandbox, or themepark fan?
What MMO games out would you rate the lowest?
What MMO game is your favorite?

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
