Short and sweet, a cool soul system, but the worl is tiny and is not built for replaybility as you will get tired quick running another toon through it.
You need alts in order to make economy work.
I really wanted to like this game, but I like large worlds not tiny theme parks. for small games I will stick to dragon age.
The main feature that really makes Rift fun for me is the flexible Class system. I'm sure I could spend a very long time just experimenting with the different possible combinations. And I will! :-)
I have enjoyed Rift enough, in Beta 3 & 4, that I've pre-ordered the game and joined a guild (Black Company). So Yes I do enjoy it. The only thing I think is lacking is in the number of options for character customization. Still that won't detract enough to kill my joy. Plus I suspect that Trion will beef that up at some point.
Now, if we can just make it past the first month without massive nerfs, I might finally get over my paranoia that every game I beta will turn into "Equine Excrement". =P

The way to avoid being let down by nerfs is not playing the strongest class in the game. Pick something in between

Well, I have enjoyed every class I've played in Rift. And I'm seriously not sure which class combo would be the strongest. Still from what I've heard about how they intend to balance things for PvP, I actually am sustaining a glimmer of hope that they won't feel the need to break out the nerf bat.
Though I guess I'll take your advice and roll at least 2 character of each calling. Then IF one of them gets nerfed I should still be able to have fun with the rest...

The founders price isn't even that. Because Trion VALUES their fan base, they are letting those that jump in with the game at launch (up to March 15th) an option to sub three ways. You can go month to month $14.99 (standard price.) You can go 3 months $12.99 per month. You can go 6 months $9.99 per month. This price is locked in as long as you hold a subscription.
Yes, charging people 10 bucks to play a new P2P game is some evil scheme to get your money.
Is this game GW2? SWTOR? Tera? nope. It's Rift and I know it's good. I've played it passed level 12 (where most are drawing their conclusions) and know what this game is offering. So wait if you want the other games. They might be good. But this game is good and solid. When's the last time you've played a AAA game that was solid and complete at launch?
You do know that most games offer subscription discounts when you purchase more than 3 months right?
Not that I mean to bring it up, but GW2 will let you jump in from day 1 and pay absolutely nothing as far as subscription goes.
Great! Where can I get the game pre-order and sub?!
You can play this "game" until GW2 comes out. You won't need a sub for it though as it has no monthly fee.
Can I get that in writing?
Actually, you can do whatever you want. Not like I really care what game you choose to waste your money on.
now this is the most intelligent quote i have ever seen. As for RIFT, i played only 2 betas which i got the VIP for and i preordered it. For what most i was able to play due to work hours i actually had fun playing it. The graphics i thought in my opinion is just beautiful especially around when the rifts open up. I love the 3 class system, rifts PQs or what ever the hell u want to call them was fun, i know i had fun playing them, died couple times where you need to know your surroundings in the game. All im gonna say is other people cant tell you what to do with your money if they do and you go with it then thats sad and pathetic. But if you go by trials and deciding for yourself and weighing your options with the other comments and do what you want to do then thats the right thing to do.
And honestly was really impressed. But as longer i played the more irked i got with real horrible zone design.
Small, constrained, drab, uninspired. Mobs every 30 feet. Quests every 30 feet.
It really does not feel like living world at all.
Much like WAR PVE zones. And they were the reason i left WAR.
If the zone design was better - nothing would stop me from playing this game.
Agreed, and the combat is lame.
I hear comments on the combat sucking a lot, but I've never figured out what people are talking about. You select a target, and hit some hotkeys to pound on it. You wait for cooldowns, and hope it dies before you do. The combat seems like most MMOs out there. Games with combat that works almost(if not exactly) the same way, which I have played: EQ, AC, AO, DAoC, SB, EQ2, WoW, GW, Ryzom, etc. The list of games with combat that differs significantly seems much shorter. If you aren't into this style of combat, then that's fine, but it certainly doesn't seem sub-par compared with its contemporaries.

To get an MMO close for £6 a month you'd have to buy a 12month subscription, here you get it for just a 6 month sub. It's a shame it's only the founders which get this discount, but you do have until mid march to get in on it and it is a brilliant offer. No big MMO is offering their service so cheaply, I'll happily pay £35 every 6 months for a solid and fun MMO, beats paying £50-£60.
As for GW2 being buy to play, I could happily play RIFT alongside GW2, that's the beauty of buy to play I guess. But who knows when GW2 will be released.

For the record, there are issues with the combination of "action points" and the cool downs for the Rogue calling. In fact they are working on fixing that as we speak. It will be "adjusted" for Beta 5. But I have to agree that combat here is very much like combat in 90% of the MMORPGs I've played in the past. And I wasn't expecting it to be any different.
I've been gaming since Half Life was released. My first MMO was EnB. I'm a picky, jaded gamer these days. I rarely finish games and I am highly critical of most. If anyone has been there and done that, it's me. I'm a burnt out PC elitist.
That being said, I had an awesome time with Beta 4! Even though the game rehashes much of what we've experienced over the years, it does it well. I was glued to the desk for 3 days straight and playing into the wee hours. It's not often a game can get me to do that. My wife had flash backs of me pulling all nighters back in the day.
Rift is comparable to other games but has its own personality. This personality makes it fun to play with and appealing to look at. I knew going in that it was going to be a rehash, so my expectations were low. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they managed to pull it all together.
This may not be a game you liked or expected to see. On the flip side, there are many more that got exactly what they wanted. I see nothing wrong with taking good ideas of the past and bringing them all together to deliver everything I love about the genre. They did it in top quality fashion and added a few twists of their own. It's content packed from the start, stable, a great base to work off of and the devs are well ahead of the game. They already have a year or more worth of ideas ready in the waiting. If those ideas bear fruit, players will feel like it's money well spent. It's what they want to see when subscribing. The devs also seem to want to listen to its greatest resource; its players. That right there means a lot to me in this day and age of console ports and quick buck rip-offs. I see potential where others may not. I'll invest in that.

Rift doesn't feel like a make a quick buck engine by skinning wow. It feels that they "Trion" actually went our of their way to stand out and its working. I also will be their at launch and will be getting GW2 when it releases. They beauty of GW and GW2 is that you don't have to worry about shutting off your account, its always playable. A model that I wish Rift had, but you can't have it all.
Most of the time when I patronize a game, its not because of the game itself; I can find fun in anything, but its more like I feel as if I am investing into the company itself. That is why I trend towards the indies more than the megacorps.
I've been keeping loose tabs on Rift and liked the sound of the talk and the look of the game. I was particularly interested in the character customisation.
I participated in the most recent BETA event and largely enjoyed the experience. There were no significant bugs, just a couple of movement related quirks, the interface was familiar and easy to use and the world interesting.
My only real disappointment is...we've seen it all before. There is always talk of "WOW-clones", but Rift, certainly as far as I've ventured into it, couldn't be much more of a carbon copy of the MMO giant. The character customisation we were promised is nothing more than the WoW skill-trees with a cherry on top and so far there is nothing about the game which differs significantly.
My impression of Rift so far is that they have built a game around the formula which has worked best so far and applied it to a different setting. Are they hoping to lure dis-illusioned WoW players into a new world with a familiar interface? I have to admit I was hoping for something different.

Please, its not that you are not entitled to form you own opinions... But I don't see Rift as a "WoW clone" per se. Let me give an example: Rift has "Clerics", which can heal and cast, or melee and cast and heal, or mostly fill an "augmented melee" roll with some support healing... In WoW you can't get all that out of the same character. You ether roll a Paladin, or you roll a Shaman, or you roll a Priest. And the same thing applies to each of what Rift calls a "Calling" (Cleric, Mage, Rogue, Warrior). Now you don't seem to agree with me, but I prefer the way Rift does it.
Now I will admit that, as far as I understand it, the Rift class system is limited for PvP roles. But I like that idea because it means that my PvE centric playstyle is less likely to become nuetered by the need for PvP Balancing. Whereas in WoW, everytime I discovered a set of useful tactics it seemed like there was someone screaming "Exploit" on the forums. Which was eventually followed by a beat down with the nerf bat.
I found it curious that you open with a discussion of "character customization"... but in WoW I could only chose from a couple of the available races to make say a "Warlock". But in Rift I can make a Warlock / Necromancer / (somethingelse) with Any of the Races, on either side. Which is what I have been wanting!
But one of the key elements that makes Rift "feel different" to me is that I don't really have to "min/max" to have a viable build. This is because the "skill trees" have enough good skills down low that you may not have to max one tree out to get access to good skills. And what this means, at least in part, is that if you build two trees at once, you won't have to follow just one skill rotation to get good results. That is NOT the case in WoW! (Or at least it wasn't in the past... And I haven't played recently.) So in Rift, while there might be characters that look like mine does, it is far less likely their skills will be the same. And that is the type of customization that I care the most about.
I wouldn t say it will fold, but will not even have 100k subs after 4-6 months.
I think it will hold just fine. Currently Beta 4 almost all of the servers were full to the point they brought up 2 more on the weekend. They were soild all weekend. As to stuff to do in game if you do some looking at what some of the Alpha testers did you will see there is alot more they are not telling us about including things like fishing etc. The warfronts were not bad at least the 2 we had access too. The open world PVP was fun reminded me more of WoW pvp server. There is objective based PVP in the open world as well which is awesome being able to take over locations.
I dunno, I think they will have a steady player base, Tera on the other hand I can see losing subs after 4-6 months simply because its an all out grind fest like Aion ended up being. Starwars could care less only Scifi players will have interest in that most fantasy people will stay here. As to Wow players I can see alot jumpoing on board this game has the best of almost all the current mmo's in it and will cater to what people like.
As noted abive the game is chaotic in many forms and the very open Soul system keeps me trying out new builds constantly to make sure I find what I really like... downside you get stuck looking at two or more souls and cant decide what you like better lol.
I played in Beta 3 and 4 and with that information alone I preordered and bought the 6 month subscription at the reduced starting rate. I played Wow for a number of years and have to admit that that was my first MMO. I quit Wow about 2 years ago and since then have played War, Aion, LOTRO, and a couple of free to plays to try them out. For years now I have been looking for a new game that gave the same satisfaction that Wow first did when I wanted to log in every chance I could to explore the world some more and see what new things I could accomplish with my character. Rift is the first game I have played since then that has given me that feeling.
On another note I love crafting and especially more so if the crafting is usefull. I leveled my Outfitter crafting as high as it could go in the Beta and noticed that as a rogue class in my leveling from 0 to 27 I found having the crafting actually usefull and not only used a couple items from my crafting but pretty much re-outfitted myself 3 seperate times using Outfitting. Even while running both dungeons I could get into by this point , participating in many rift battles and doing most of the quests.
For those that say that this game is only linear in its progession and feels to small I must ask... did you let the game lead you around ? I found a couple quest NPC's tucked away here and there for some quests that you only would find if you went off the main path and looked for them. Yes this game does have built in quest hubs that lead you from one hub to the next but what games released recently that are an actually polished full package haven't had this built in.

Yes. I've been very very pleased and most comfortable with my pre-order of Rift, more-so than I have with any other game in the past 6 years. Really. And much of that comfort stems from the seriousness of Trion as a company, their attention to detail and polish. I think 2011 is going to be a good year for mmorpgs's, and Rift has been a very good experience both in breadth and depth of the game-play I've experienced and what I've been following.
Though I've been a mmorpg transient, for good reason, I've found that this game is at least worth the pre-order and 3-month sub rate from me.

If Fishing is in beta5 i will Pre-order... That would seal the deal for me...
1. Fishing
2. crafting
3. Warfronts
4. Invasions
5. Rift Hunting
6. Rift Raids
7. Puzzle Rifts
8. Instanced Dungeons
9. Random Elite Bosses
10. Quests
11. Open World PvP
12. Switching out builds
13. Collecting Artifacts
14. Playing the market and auction house
I think i can find enough to do after launch and 3 months sub.....

This. I didn't bother crafting until level 17 or 18 but after the initial 35-45 skill points I was starting to see things that equalled or bettered my quest rewards. A nice change for sure. Very pleased.
I have played in the past few betas. If you have played a few of the MMORPGS released in the past several years then you have most likely done everything in Rift or something very similar. There really isn't anything new in the game. Its more of the stuff people are tired of doing. Trion seems like an excellent company and the game will probably get a lot of subscribers at launch due to there being a large number of players in limbo waiting for something new to come a long. Ultimately though, I think players are going to get bored and jump again as soon as some fresh and innovative comes along. I went into the game really hoping to like it but just couldn't get there.

Wow, I have a worse PC than you and it ran fine for me. The game auto-adjusted me down before I even started.
Maybe you just had a bad install?
Anyways, the game is a blast in my opinion. I haven't been able to play a bard similar to what there was in EQ1, but this game delivered. I'll buy it.
PC specs:
dual 2.4ghz intels
nvidia 8600 GTS (haven't updated drivers in over a year)
4gb ram
dual monitors bought from a salvage place for 5 bucks each
Agreed, and the combat is lame.
I loved it! It was fun like WoW, but had better graphics (imo). With what seemed like a darker world.
I've given some opinions of the game here:

Best mmo last year and the start of this year. I was surprised and happy I preorderd already. I just love the feeling in it. And never a dull moment.

It will be "adjusted" for Beta 5. But I have to agree that combat here is very much like combat in 90% of the MMORPGs I've played in the past. And I wasn't expecting it to be any different.
This +1
Played from beta 2 to 4, looking for the new events and for sure will be there at launch.

I love the game cheers,
Braun
Did you find the guy that made you eat all the hot cheese?
