I have seen in a lot of forums "what makes this game next gen?"
Well, I will tell you what makes Rift next gem.
Its there server back end and customer service.

That's what many people been trying to say...I believe GW2 will be doing the same. But it's this that sets the new MMOs apart from what's been out before.
Good stuff but not enough to call the game next gen.
A new generation must differ a lot from the old one and while Rift is a fine game it is not that different from the games before it. People have called many games nexgen, like AoC, WAR, TCoS, FFXIV, Darkfall, MO and many more. Neither of them are good enough to be called nexgen in my book.
I would say we have 3 generations of games.
1st Gen. Started with Meridian 59. Most famous is EQ. The first MMOs, a lot from them are still around.
2nd Gen. Started with UO, have games like Eve, MOa nd DF in it. Usually called sandox.
3rd gen. MMORPGs for a mainstream audiance. Started with Wow and EQ2. Basically a 1st generation game but with many features to make it easier for regular people to play, and removed most of the complicated work. A lot more item based than earlier games.
Thses are my views of generations of course and not anything official. And I am not saying that any game I class as a third generation game is better than previous games, just different. But the games of a certain generation do belongs together.
And Rift still belongs together with games like Wow, EQ2 and LOTRO. Same quest system, same combat mechanics, same levels. The sould system, the rifts and excellent customer support just isn't enough to valid a new generation.
I am not sure what the 4th generation will be.Maybe TOR, GW2 or WoDO have enough new ideas to valid fir a 4th gen title, maybe it instead will be something that is a mix between a game and a social page alá facebook. Maybe it is something else. You usually have to look back to see where it changed. But it ain't Rift.
How can a 2nd gen UO come out before a 1st gen EQ? Not sure you got your gens correct there.

(I still won't buy/sub/play the game... doesn't peak my interest enough, good job though)

I didn't think so adding features and dynamic layers makes it next gen. In my book besides server tech. and a refreshing look at what customer service really is this game is a step forward in the mmo market.

Well since there is no hard fast rules for what makes something next gen that’s your opinion only so stop making it out as fact.
There are a few things in my mind that makes Rift “next gen” with the class system at the top of the list. Going back to the four base RPG callings and letting players mix and match specializations within each whenever they want is pretty revolutionary to me. Dynamic content could be but I think it needs to be a bit more dynamic then the current implementation (again my opinion).
Above all else I find Rift a new way to take traditional MMO ideas and mesh them together with a dynamic class system and a at least beginnings of a dynamic world. Add to that the polish and quality of the game and it feels next gen to me.

I have played EQ, EQ2, DAoC, WoW, Aion, AoC, UO, WAR, a ton of Free to Play games and when me and a friend got in Beta 4 and played it for the first day we could not get ourselfs to log in the next day. Its that BLAH...next gen lol...when i queud up for the PvP it played just like WAR.
.... people do not even know what Nextgen means anymore.... its about engines..
Now these exsamples do not even cover the true meaning of nextgen but meh for the discussion it fits
Gen 0 ,the start, Muds, plain text discription gaming. (old Muds incl Mer59) it had pictures but it still was a MuD.
Gen 1: UO , the first true 2d MMO. were text was replaced by grapics.
gen2: SWG.EQ.WOW,EVE ,Aion. 3d mmo's they basicly use the same engines as the 2d version text replaced for grapics,2d made 3d and fairly nice emulated stuff like flight and lightning. all still fairly basic.
Gen3: ???? For a game to be Above the gen2 it does not need to ahve better grapics. (tho it helps) but the engine must be clearly above and beyond the psychic current games have. Hair that moves naturaly, water that flows and when you step into the flow it should change direction. gravity,weater, lighting not based on a Dev node placement but true light that can be directed or blocked. that will be next gen.
Rift, (i dont play it nor know it well) is probaly a nice game as many seem to praize it to heaven but its simply using alot of old tech (coding) to make things look nicer . every mmo or current gen game tries it/does it.
their Modulated server network aint a new idea but its a good step in the right direction , they got servers that handle lighting and weather, servers that handle rocks and trees blowing.. instead of the local (client) figgering things out, its a good step but not nextgen
I honestly think he's mixing them up too. I'd say personally:
Predecessor Generation (MUDs) - Not actual MMOs, but text based MUDs deserve recognition as being the predecessors to 1st generation MMOs and were obvious inspirations for a lot of them.
1st Generation (EX: Meridian 59, Ultima Online, The Realm) - First graphical MUDs often with a heavy focus on sandbox play. Very very difficult for a casual player to get into.
2nd Generation (EX: Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Final Fantasy XI, Asheron's Call) - Newer MMOs often with more "themepark" oriented play. Around this time the popularity of MMOs picked up significantly, but MMO players still weren't anywhere near mainstream.
3rd Generation (EX: World of Warcraft, Everquest II) - MMOs brought more to a mainstream audience. A bigger focus on casual and solo play, streamlined and easy to use UIs, etc. Someone playing a MMO could now be considered "normal" by most gamers rather than just a niche gamer type.
Now the 4th Generation could be up for debate. Should we consider games like AoC, Warhammer, and Aion 4th generation MMOs? They really didn't bring a huge change in the genre as a whole and many regard them as failures (though I personally do not, as they are still active); however going with the general timeframes they should probably be placed in 4th generation. A new generation doesn't always mean improvements.
Next Generation (???) - Possibly a focus on "dynamic" content and more action oriented combat. 2011-2012 looks like it may very well be the start of the true next generation MMOs.
From what I know of Trion and Rift they are big on cloud computing. I think one of the interviews said something about it being able to be done all server side. You would end up with a OnLive type client. They also said that isn't what the market wants at the moment. Pity my internet search skills suck.

EvE online is working on a true lighting 3d enviorment (partly nextgen) ToR has some realy nice psychics going for it asfar i could see but non of them are truely nextgen yet.
Thing about psychics they know what's next-gen before anyone else. Damn Bioware!

Wouldn't be nice to have an Oblivion style MMO? Ya know instead of wolves standing in a field, they run around in packs hunting stuff. Sort of take the Rift concept and apply it to the actual game world, instead of being a layer on top of it.

Well look at it this way;
Rift will show that content like that can be done which might allow other devs to look and say "hey, if Rift could do this, and GW2 was able to that... why can't we do better?". So don't be surprized to see an Oblivion style (not Oblivion named) MMO sometime in the near future.
So while some people might say "Rift isnt next gen..." I say that it's leading into the next gen.

Bethesda is already working on a MMO so we will see a Oblivion styled MMO no matter what.
But I don't see what you mean Rift is doing so different, rifts and invasions are a scaling and more dynamic version of WARs PQs.So if any game leading to next gen that way it would be WAR?
Or do you mean the soul system? Fewer classes with more specialization is probably not what will lead to next gen either.
Rift is a fine game but it is not close to nextgen. It have a few new features but I think either WAR or GW2 will get the credits for dynamic content, WAR was first and GW2 takes it to an entirely new level, Rift is somewhere in between but they should have added more stuff like this.
With the new technology they can introduce new content on the fly though without having you logout and patch the client. That's kind of neat right?

oh crap if that qualifies as a 'next gen' we will all be playing elves and classes until we die.
also, i NEVER decide to play a game or switch to a game because of customer service. If customer service is the game breaker then its a terrible sign for the industry.
'next gen' is droping the whole fantasy thing, dropping classes, dropping quests, adding seiges, adding terrorial control, not friggin customer service

Warhammer didn't have any dynamic content that I could think of, so I don't see why it would get credit for something it didn't do. Yes, PQs it did do and it should get credit for that (Rift should get credit for making them more dynamic though). GW2 will likely bring it a step up too. It could very well be that a combination of Rift's dynamic content and Warhammer's PQs will be the catalyst for next generation content. Taking out my crystal ball, I foresee that WoW is going to add some dynamic in a later patch or their next expansion too.
Setting up their servers in a different way, doesn't constitute Next Gen or make the game itself any different than any other game. It simply means their servers shouldn't lag nearly as bad as we are used to in most other MMOs.
