Well, the problem is 'next gen' is sort of an subjective term when it comes to MMO's. People have their own ideas on what they want in a game in the first place. I think for the WoW-esque gamer, and in the traditional sense of MMORPG's you can argue that Rift looks like it could be a step in progressing what traditional MMORPG's are. For those who think 'next gen' means you completely change everything in the old formula and it has to be something way different their are a few different games coming out that do look like their trying that sort of thing, I think of Tera and Arche Age when mentioning those. So much opinion stated here is looked at as fact and it's actually sort of funny. XD
Please stop using this ridiculous "next-gen" crap, people. The soul system is amazing (to me), I will be subbing to Rift, but the game itself isn't dramatically different enough to be called "next-gen."
I have seen in a lot of forums "what makes this game next gen?" Well, I will tell you what makes Rift next gem. Its there server back end and customer service. Here is a link to a youtube video during Rift beginning stages. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9TXc6s46ME&hd=1 So that is what makes Rift Next Gen!
I have played EQ, EQ2, DAoC, WoW, Aion, AoC, UO, WAR, a ton of Free to Play games and when me and a friend got in Beta 4 and played it for the first day we could not get ourselfs to log in the next day. Its that BLAH...next gen lol...when i queud up for the PvP it played just like WAR.
The problem is that all you did was pvp the whole time so you didn't get to experience all the next generation content Rift has on the PVE side.
Why are grown men/women arguing over a marketing buzzword? You might as well be arguing over whether the new and improved Tide detergent is really all that much better.
Why is Rift nextgen? Because some ad exec at Trion says that it is.
If I write a new book on a computer instead of on a typewriter it doesnt make my story 'next gen' because of the great customer support of my computer and because its written in Word 07.
Graphic updates is a 'next gen' for hardware, not games. It might be better to say
'updated graphics' instead of 'next gen'.
Never the less the term USED to mean new gaming concept on new graphics techonology. Not just new graphics technology and better customer support
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

In my mind the technology used is next-gen. It depends on your thinking behind it. On a typewriter you needed white-out or auto-correct tape to manually delete or change the words on the paper. Also, the words written on the paper could only be done once. You would have to find a copier to make duplicates or type the whole thing again.
With a computer you can change, correct, delete words with a stroke of a key. You can make duplicates right then and there as many times as you want, as long as your ink doesn't run out.
I find that to be a much more fluid way of telling and changing the story. Hence, Dynamic content. You get to change, update, alter content on the fly.

If you take an old black and white movie and colorize it, is the movie now 'next gen'?
like I say, used to be people assumed 'next gen' meant the game techology was graphically better AND the game mechanics were some new idea.

nextgen is a console term having to do with the fact that there is a new better console and all of the games you played before are obsolete. UO/EQ were not obsolete when wow came out just like wow will not be obsolete when rift/sw/tera come out. This is a stupid tag to bring to MMOs. They are lucky I was in betas ... their nextgen BS and "this isn't azeroth" crap reeks of teh stoopid.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already

Yes actuallly. Most film critics consider the colorizing of film to be an evolution of film making. Technicolor use to be a big deal back then. "Gone with the Wind" and "Wizard of Oz" getting special attention for coming out the same year with that new 'technology.' "Wizard of Oz" of special note for using it as a device to show the transition from Kansas and Oz. "Gone with the Wind"; which was shot completely in color, had a special note for its use of color during the dramatic presentation of the burning of Atlanta. "Gone with the Wind" ended up winning the Academy award for Best Picture and for Cinematography. The award for Cinematography including a mention of color because they indeed thought it was a big deal.
Now I could mention the irony of your post in relation to "Wizard of Oz" and its correlation to a certain commercial that just came out, but I think I'll leave it there.
