Imagine fighting invasions off with hundreds of others players. Imagine doing it with no lag at all. It's in Rift.

Having played in this last beta, I look forward to the next.  I would like to add a quick oppion, pro's and con's in order of importance from my expierience so far.

    Pros

       1. The game is fun.  In two days of playing I had not one but two meals go cold on me before I could take a break, put the keyboard down, and eat.  I game alot and this happening is a rarity I seldom encounter.  Between stalking rifts, and questing I never felt like I was grinding.  The levels just happened almost of their own accord.

       2. Very polished, in fact I didn't notice any real bugs. The pathing is great.  The sound and graphics are great.  My machine is decent middle upper end, with an older nvidia card, it ran smooth.  There is something dev's always talk about.  Immersion.  They try to disect a a feeling with science, buy all the right ingrediants, toss them in the pot and hope you end up with a souffle.  Cooks know that your more likely to end up with a soup.  So many MMO's have tried and failed.  Well this game has it.  You fall into it, like falling down the rabbit hole, and end up in another world.  And it's not the sound, graphics or gameplay.  It's the lack of distractions from bugs, and mistakes.  This game just doesn't have the errors that others have had.  I have never seen a more bug free beta.

    Cons

       1. Too many abilities.  My god I have (2) hands, (4) fingers on each.   I don't care how ambidextrous you may be or what your game rig set up is.  There is a realistic amount of buttons you can map things to.  At least the way it is now, you get 3 main trees almost from the get go.  Each with its own abilities, you level up get more points, WoW-like nothing new here, except the sheer quantity of abilites is rediculous.  Often there are 3 at least that are so similar you just pick the one which you think has the coolest name.  You can say that part of the skill of the game is picking a certain amount of skills from a pool and for better or worse, thats what you have.  But dang you dont need 15 abilities per tree.  (I didn't actualy count them it may be more even) They need to knock it down to like 5 or 6 so you can have 12 (one row of hotkeys) out of 15/18.  Asking someone to map more than 12 abilities for quick responce is just stupid.  Just give me 12 good skills scale them with gear and level, and let it be.  No need to re-engineer human evolution to give us 6 arms so we can play this game decently.

It is polished indeed, but not very optimized (in my opinion). I am playing on a decent laptop (T9550 2.66 GHz Core2Duo, 4GB DDR2 RAM, 1GB nVidia GeForce GT 120M GPU, 320GB 5400 RPM HDD), and whether I switch to the low quality renderer or not, I get a maximum FPS of 30, averaging 25. I'm starting to think it has something to do with HDD spin speed. Any advice? (Besides "Get a desktop" or "Get a better laptop" and such).

I have an older laptop and I had to run it with the low-end graphic engine. But when I'm playing MMO with my laptop, it tends to overheat and it gets slow. Have you tried with a laptop cooler?

There is gathering. There is refining. There is crafting.

On a side note, by crafting a certain couple of items, I think I've discovered how I'm going to make my money at the start. image

Lets hope that gets patched image The other nice thing about crafting is that most crafted items, at least early on, are better than what you can get from questing. You can also make items like shoulder pads much earlier than you would get from quests.

I actually am okay with the click button > wait > crafted gear cycle ,at least until someone comes up with something better than what EQ2/VG came up with. Granted, their systems are fun, but they are far too time consuming if you want to make up a large batch of anything, IMO.

I would like a minigame to go with crafting but I would like to see something a bit quicker.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

@Emhster, I always use notebook cooler when I'm gaming. I have a Zalman NC2000, and the GPU temperature rises to 85 Celsius average, sometimes 90. Laptop shuts itself down after 105 Celsius according to the manufacturer (ASUS), but it didn't happen to me (yet :) )

I don't think all the skills are meant to be used, and that's one of the many things that makes the soul system as good as it is. I'm sure Trion intends for you to discard certain skills when better ones are acquired. With my Sabo, I got rid of my Blast Charge when I got the Spike charge. Since they're both on the same timer, there's really no reason to use the Blast when Spike does almost 2x the damage. I however do use the adhesive bomb and fragment bomb, but the adhesive bomb is more situational. I only use the adhesive bomb to give myself or the healers time to get away from the charging warriors/rouges and my fragment bomb is used for aoe dots.

"The headstart for Rift is scheduled to begin on February 23rd with the official launch on March 1st."

Can someone explain what this headstart period is?

  • AntiarinAntiarin Member UncommonPosts: 16

People that preordered the game get to start on the 23rd. For everyone else the game goes live March 1st.

Haha. I was referring to selling them on the Auction House...not an exploit.  image

Nice, I assume that will apply if I pre-order now. It is a shame the collector's edition digital and PC DVD are the same price; will I be able to enter the headstart if i order the DVD from Amazon instead?

I know in the UK most online and high street retailers are including the code for the headstart if you pre-order.  Must be the same for other countries.

8 levels? Wrong RIFT has 70 levels at release.. check the armor sets, faction gear, and mounts top ends in game now all require level 70.

I was spent oodles of time in crafting,  experting outfitter, weaponsmith, armor smith, and rune crafters,  I explored a ton of the faction trees crafting recipes and can state crafting is hugely advantageous.. crafted gear way exceeds quest reward/drop gear in every way.

That said epic drops( purples), pvp faction gear(purples), and high end planar gear(purples) are way better than the best I could craft, and I was crafting some really nice blue gears.

Hard to explain as you can have a bow and a gun with the same dps, but the gun just seems to hit harder where as the bow seems to be more consistent damage over time.

    Does that make sense ?

experiement you will see what Im saying

Crafting is very lacking at the moment. Items aren't any better than world drops and there's no positive randomness to make the process interesting. it's very run of the mill and pretty uninspired, there's room for lots of improvement. It's only as you level up your toon and profession that you start to see better recipes available from faction quartermasters and as work order rewards. There have been no reports of recipe drops from mobs anywhere. Pedestrian is the best way to describe it, I got my Runecrafting up to grandmaster, outfitter and butcher up to master.

I made over 100plat this last event selling what you call " lacking " crafted items, never charging more than 10-20 gold for any green. By level 20 I was crafting a stready steam of blue items for 2 - 3p each.

Crafted gear well exceeds quest reward/dropped greens on a level to level basis.

I do not like the fact only a very selected few ( friends and family of the mmo owners ) have had access to end game to bug shoot. And 4 times in a row during beta 5, and 6 atleast I had Latency issues ( from the US ) in the main towns or near massive envasions. SO the no lag = crock of garbage.

The game lacks end-game content, Char detail is sub-par at best......Quest system is boring...Weapon/armor system is pretty basic no real set bonus or similar to push you to get them. Just basic oh a purple.....or a blue time to time off the Lair type things.

Prepare for insane amounts of CC ( crowd control ) in warfronts and open world pvp. It's pretty annoying with no immunity timer means you can be 24/7 stunned or "squirreled" ( btw was suppose to break with damage but I experenced otherwise )

Lvl 1-9 is very boring as must said

Lvl 10-19 Decent pvp combat if you are on the higher end Not a pile of CC in these lvl's but still alot.

     Lvl 20-29 Pretty basic

Lvl 30-35 FFS the CC was so annoying in warfronts........Experenced pre-mades will wreck face period.

Lots of AFK leachers tipical of ny mmo, Prepare to be Bot farmed like Aion was on launch. They did little to counter this yet and doubt they even considered the problem it WILL be.

Mid game dungeons IT, DS, KB are pretty basic and work ok just boring. Many lack the tipical tank or Healer as per most mmo's so find a group of friends and stick with them!.

Overall I score this game 4.5 and predict lots of rage in the coming months, Emo rage me all you want.....I simply speak the truth.  Sorry if this seems like a flame but its true of MY experiences in rift since beta 1-6.

SHOW/BETA END-GAME CONTENT OR BUST BUST

  • NoobkilarNoobkilar Member Posts: 175

Forgot to add the buggy infinite currency bugged rune breaking crafting system which should get patched but shows how little they have tested the basic's should have been found in beta 1.

I can't wait for the next beta. I'm going through riftdrawl symptoms. Headstart can't come soon enough
