“About half” of Rift's content is found in dungeons and warfronts, Scott said. To this end, he stated that a dungeon queue system is just a matter of time. It will be cross-shard to reduce wait times. Although the idea seems to be unpopular (especially among the hardcore fansite representatives), Scott said that an auto-forming group finder is a necessity. “People love grouping, but hate to put a group together,” he said, noting that without an auto-group function, “we won't get people in there.”

Say goodbye to the MMORPG industry folks. The cancer is spreading. First it was instancing getting abused, now this. Diablo with a monthly fee, here we come. What a horrible feature.
It takes a whole 5min to get a group going. Never had an issue. So many instant features and the game becomes a lobby game with some single player leveling areas.
Oh god I hate those dungeon finder systems... Most of the time you end up with people, who greet you with "hello idiot who is from another realm and who I'll see never again: watch me steal all the stuff I can and annoy you as much as possible!".
Those dungeon finders simply allows everyone to behave like a jerk, because they won't see each other again most likely. It kills any sort of connection, chance to find new buddies or whatever. It brings out the worst in the people.
Not to mention I personally am no fan of constantly teleporting in and out of content that has nothing to do with each other. It makes the world itself useless, kills emersion, and converts the game which was once a whole into a lot of mini games you simply jump to.
When I play a tank in WoW, I never have to leave the town from lvl 13 on to max level, because of the dungeon finder. Is that supposed to work this way? Will it be also in Rift that way that people will stand around, doing nothing and waiting for a queue to pop up?
I started to get interested in Rift, but the dungeon finder is really horrible.
Even if it WOULD be hard to find a group for a dungeon: that would be another reason to join guilds and force people to cooperate and work together, instead of 90% of the people beeing lone wolves who ain't interested in the community.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
I dunno, I like the dungeon finder I just wish it wasnt cross-shard. Teaming up with ppl you'll most likely never ever see again just dont do it for me. It often ends badly and its rarely social. Warfront or dungeon dont matter, cross-shard just isnt my thing.
But as a tool the dungeon finder works. Not all games have world wide chat set up and finding groups can be a chore. I like to get things done while waiting for a party you know, not just stand around town spamming.
Dont care who copies what really as long as its well done and fills some kinda need.
Dude, wtf?!
These young developers. "players love to group but don't like forming them." edit: ... yeah... new players that don't know wtf MMORPGs are. Console players.
The rest of the MMO world is quite used to forming groups, thank you... Not to mention that group finders and cross shard clustering completely kills any chance of community and emersion.
So now Rift is going to be another log in, teleport to dungeon, clear it as fast as possible, get your shinies, disband, never speak to eachother again experience. Good times.
This is not a troll, flame, or anything else worth banning me over. It is simply my pure opinion, and I have a right to share it.
They are going to shoot themselves in the foot with that decision.
It's getting harder and harder to defend Rift against WoW clone comments, without looking like a tool
Darn, this is really the first thing that I really hoped would NOT occur. Makes it feel like xbox live fps shooter insta que
I don't mind a dungeon finder system but not one that is multi server.
It is my impression that if you can get any people on any server more people ninja, or do other egoistic things. If you only playing with people on your server you learn to know the bad apples after a while but when it is multi server that wont happen.
A good local LFG system is a great idea. A system like Wows isn't at least for me personally.
I don't mind playing with people that isn't so good or have pretty bad gear, I can always give some pointers. But jackasses and ninjas are a different question, I want nothing to do with them. People who quit the dungeon half way in because they got "their" drop.
Thank goodness for guilds. I won't have to deal with this cr@p.
This can only be useful to folks who are typically soloists.
Huge mistake.
I think the dungeon finder is an excellent idea and probably the single best idea ever implemented into an mmo. Finally you can actually, in a relatively decent amount of time, find a group to experience content that you otherwise would not be able to. At least without having to go through the very painful and expensive (in game time/game money) process of finding a guild that isn't run by some neofascist wannabe dictator.
Cannot see why anyone would have a problem with more people enjoying more content. Just means you'll have more people to play with in the long run.

Yeah I got to agree this doesn't seem like a good move...it's no way to foster community on specific servers....
Well, this is only part of the interview. The developers specifically stated, that while it will be like "WoW's", it won't be the same as WoW's. They did say they saw where the faults in such a system lie. So there is hope that they can implement it in a way that doesn't kill the community.
That said, I am still extremely dissapointed in this decision on their part. Especially at cross-shard. While Rifts will bring the community together, nothing helps that like dungeons. In fact, a huge recruiting strategy of my guild is joining groups with people who don't have guilds, getting to know the person, and if we liked them, asking them into our guild. It's a way to get to know people. With cross-shard, you'll never see that person again.
Maybe Rift will do it differently, but the community isn't the greatest as it is anyway, though that could just be beta. I just hate to see something like this implemented. We gain 10 minutes of convenience, but lose our sense of identity as a community inside of a server.
LOL another negative drop in the bucket im soooo glad I didnt pre-order or plan on picking this up. Like another person stated your right what more can you copy. Thats one of many many reasons I hated world of warcraft, who wants to be thrown into a group with random people not knowing there skill level, maturity or who there playing with. This game reeks fail sauce. Newer MMO's *shakes head* well its just like anything in life, most newer music is crap, as well as movies etc Why does everything seem to go downhill and not up.

lol
I started this kind of topic on the official Rift's forums. It felt as if over all people did not want this feature. I THINK I want it, but there are good points as to not having it.

No I think the dictated part is being forced into a group of people who you didnt choose and have no clue about, read my above post. I guess they'll need cross servers eventually for when the game flops. Time is all thats needed. And if it doesent flop then I know what past community will be keeping the game alive.
Guarantees I won't use it, or PUG. There are always going to be unpopular choices made in game. I would like to say that this alone would be a dealbreaker, but with the rifts and quests (and I don't typically race to cap) I figure this game can still last me until TOR or GW2 are released.
Again, it's a speak with your wallet issue. If you don't like it, don't buy it, if you'll be in the beta tomorrow I suggest you pepper feedback with complaints about it and tell others to as well. I'll definitely be doing that, as well as looking for a guild so that I can avoid using it.
I don't like it. If you're going to do everything for the community (spoonfeed) they'll never really make friends. Dungeon finders make MMO's feel like a random Call Of Duty match to me.
But since the game is being marketed towards that of WoW, the "casual quick satisfaction" crowd, its actually the right thing to do.
Because we don't need more people to play with- there are plenty of people to group with on our own shards, you know, where we may actually see them again and interact- instead of just using other players as disposable tools.
Well, all I have to say is that I'm a soloer, hate putting groups together, though I do enjoy good groups when they happen, and I don't like the idea of the "dungeon finder" at all.
Horrible device. I can see a looking for group tool that lists a specific dungeon or quest and people can "hook up" by using it, sort of like a virtual bulletin board, but just putting groups together based on non-social criteria is not for me.

I think you'd prefer singleplayer games with some basic coop thrown around.
It's immersion breaking.
It's too instant.
It doesn't encourage socializing because you'll never see the people again.
It limits the people that ACTUALLY want to find groups and make friends from doing so.
As opposed to randomly finding a random person in a major city or the questing area who you have no idea what their skill level or maturity is. The dungeon finder is yet another feature that is part of the MMO genre, albeit WoW seems to have come up with this particular mechanic(if I am wrong I am sure I will be corrected). This is the same with many features Rift apparently copied from WoW. Despite these feature being prevalent throughout the MMO genre. What you fail to grasp is that the reason you see alot of similar mechanics in RIFT as in WoW is because they are part of the SAME GENRE. Its like saying MW2 copied Wolfenstein 3D because they are both in first-person and you have a HUD that displays ammo amount.
I have played the game and I have seen that the developers have made it quite clear this game does almost nothing new. What it does offer is a new generation MMO that is ridiculously stable even in its Beta forms and offers fun MMO genre gameplay.
People should wake up.
The time of single server ("shard") systems are almost over. Wow, EVE, GW1, all cross server play, all played massively.
Every game that relied on single server populations went down. You can't have a decent spread content and decent spread pops with 3K-4K server populations on line.
You have to regroup your players in every inch, level, part you can.
It is either that or play on very low pop servers and quit because those other 13 dudes are not in the mood to do a level 26 dungeon with you.
it shows once again people are simply spoiled and have no clue about modern game design.
First let's see if they even can deliver such a cross server LFG tool. It could take them months or a year to deliver.
And if it would take more than a year, chances are that the 3 remaining servers per continent will not make a difference after all.
Too sarcastic? Perhaps too realistic.
The dungeons are pretty spread out and would be almost impossible for lower level players to reach without exploiting or using some sort of dungeon finder system like this. The only other fix for it would be for them to add more dungeons in each factions area, but they don't seem to have the time or desire to do so.
Testers have been asking for something like this for a while to deal with the issues of getting to the other factions dungeons so Trion is just giving everyone what they asked for.
Sounds like a good idea to me. I really liked the feature in WoW, and it'll be good in Rift too. And I have made friends using this feature. It's up to YOU to actually talk to people and make friends. This is just a tool to help with that. Like any tool, use it or don't. It's up to YOU.
Anywho, to answer an earlier question, is there anything left to steal / take from other MMOs? If there is, I hope they grab it all all. Every MMO I've ever played had some things that I liked about them. However, none of them had all the things I like. If Rift can rip them all off and smash it into one MMO, I'll be a very happy camper.
Less about copying, more about progression in the industry and in technology. Someone else said it right when they said that most MMOs will have this feature, and those that won't are probably too old to support it. I personally don't care one way or another, but I do have a preference that it isn't cross-shard.
I play with my wife and typically with a guild, so overall this makes little difference to me.
Wasn't there a rule against posting "HERP WOW COPY DERP" threads?
.. But in a good way.
