It's ok, I had people do much worse in the game to me. From leaving the guild we made to telling everyone we sucked in general because we didn't invite someone fast enough. I am usually a very calm person, but dealing with people is a pain in MMO. Oh I miss Everquest, maybe EQnext will bring some more adults together again.
Actually I find my self back in EQ and the community is amazing. The normal servers are a bit tougher at lower levels but still have no porblems finding nice mature folks to have fun with.
I'm 23, turning 24 this year, and I really have a question for people like you who are older:
Where are your friends?
I started with 2 other friends back in Lineage 2 when I was 16 (my brother, and a really close friend). We all stopped gaming together during first year university/college so we wouldn't fail. Now, almost 8 years later, I have over 23 people whom I chill with in real life that game hop with me. I am the GM of every guild in every game that we have created, events are organized, and we kick out pugs every time someone is below x DPS or acts like a complete tool. The first thing most of us do (except sometimes me, and anyone else who wants to troll) is hit /leave 1.
All of your problems would be solved if you simply had some friends, no offense.
{Mod edit}
Maybe it's just a generation gap? But honestly, game hopping happens because
A. You have no friends and are sick of the current game
B. You have an asshole guild leader like me who buys games for people and force them to come along.
EDIT: Forgot to mention. The internet brings the worst out of people simply because you can't see the other person you are talking to. Nobody shit talks to me in my guild, and I don't shit talk to anyone because we're all friends irl. I've never had drama occur (except for some odd relationship things here and there where a healer is mad at an ex and ex is tank and lets him die) so honestly....
No ... people are just tired of the status quo regardless if you can wrap your head around that fact or not.
I do not think that is a fact at all.
If it was, would WoW still have millions of subscribers? Would Rift be as popular and hyped?
Would SWTOR be as popular and hyped?
YOU may be tired of the status quo, many on these specific forums may be tired of the status quo, but there are millions of players who like games like WoW and Rift and LOTRO etc. etc. and they will keep playing them.
Don't get confused as to think a minority opinion is anything more then it is.
We live in a very fortunate time where there are dozens of quality titles available for MMO fans to enjoy. There is a lot of variety and a lot of competition.
I just think the "status quo haters" are just upset because their titles don't receive the same level of funding and support and as such polish and resources as the more mainstream titles. I call it the "hipster conundrum."
What's funny is there is an overwhleming number folks that are sick of the status quo on these forums compared to people who like the current crop of MMO's for really only one reason. Everybody who likes the current MMO's are too busy playing and having fun to log on here and defend their game.
I'm one of the few that love the genre as it stands but am not currently playing do to time contraints. I find it funny listening to all the MMO haters who are always tryign to get some kind of MMO/FPS/SPRPG game idea across, when in reality they should probably head over to the COD forums or PS3 and XBOX forums.
Rift does a lot of things really well, some not so much, and I find it hillarious one would argue against polish as being one of the primary indicators of a quality product.
Never once did I say that polish is a bad thing what I said was that does not automatically make it a good game. Take a look at some of the games that have had polish yet still fail.
It probably was mentioned somewhere in the 32 pages of this post, but as far as the rudeness goes, that is a given in a "Open Beta". Most of those people that are rude in the game most likely wont be back. Allot of them said in chat they wouldnt. I think we will see a better community when head start starts on the 24th and even beter community when the 30 days is up that is given with the purchase. That has been my experience in just about all the "Open Betas" I have participated in.
And then theres that other option called the ignore function.

And you are the judge of what a good game is even though that's a highly individual and subjective opinion?
How do you define a good game?. By its popularity? Would you say Twillight is an awesome movie?
I think we will see a better community when head start starts on the 24th and even beter community when the 30 days is up that is given with the purchase.
Agreed. I don't know how anyone can judge a game community before the game has got going. At the moment any idiot can stick their nose into Rift, whether on the forums or on the open beta, and that makes for a skewed view of the community. Let the game get started and see who is still playing after a few months. Then you have your community.
How do you define a good game?. By its popularity? Would you say Twillight is an awesome movie?
Twilight is an awesome teen girl movie. We just aren't the focus group.
A MMO needs to make it's focus group happy as well to succed. WAR failed because it neither made the RvR or warhammer fans happy, it should have focused on those groups instead of current players of Wow as MJ said they focused on.
If Rift is doing a good job or not is still hard to say, it seems like it's main focus is former Wow players but we can't tell if it did a really god job or not until it been out for a few months and people spent time in the endgame.
This is the reason I hate it when MMO's have global chats. You get to watch all the drama and cussing unfold while you play. I don't think the game's been treating me -that- badly so far though. And upon launch, I hope the RP servers will actually have RP, and not tons of OOC chat.
All "Make account, download, and play" betas are like this. The harder it is to access, the better the community is. It's just really really bad on RIFT currently because of all the "hype" surrounding this game and because of the way Trion advertised it. Trion isn't subtle on who and what they are competing with.
If you looked at the trolling on the official forums about dpsmeters and addons, you could have seen this troll slugfest from a mile away.
Like others have said, once people have to start paying it will all normalize. Trolling little kids can't pay for 2 subscriptions or a game they don't actually like. I mean, they're probably just on RIFT now to pass time waiting for their raid lockouts with nothing else better to do.
Rift... Just like WAR,AOC,Darkfall. Is just another MMO trying to pull 40% of WoW's population into there game. By doing this they copy WoW's interface, quest design, raid design, and communication by a large extent. I'm glad that you cancelled your pre order, because it saved you a month or two of bordem before finally leaving the game.
I played the first two beta's and I was horribly disguisted at how they just copied WoW (Even more so than Alagon) while putting the same grindy quest "Kill 10 of these return" Every where you go. The rifts are fun at first. But when you do them 50 times and they start to spawn over your quest giver's it gets stupid annoying.
The community is also awful. People screaming "THIS GAME IS WOW 2.0, I LIKE WOW BETTER, THIS GAME IS EXACTLY THE SAME!!", etc, While not explaining any sort of quest or where to go with quest or where are the current rift spawns. I'll give this game a few months before going free to play. It might not end up in the trash like APB did but it surely wont succedd anywhere else.

Wow! The first two betas! Thats how you judge a game when not all the content was in. I have been in all of them. With each one they unlocked more content and fixed a ton of bugs. You can pretty much say its an almost polished game now. Plus the class system rocks. Since you are stuck on WoW, I will give you a comparison in which Rift did it better.
WoW has a duel spec. system. Rift has a quad spec system along with its own PvP tree to switch too. To go into it a little bit, you start off with three trees that you eventually put a soul/spec in each. That set is called a role. At level 13 you can quest to gain more souls and then purchase roles to put them in. Eventually you can have 4 roles with 3 souls each in them. You also can switch between each role whenever you would like.
So yeah, if you must say it copies WoW, at least Rift is doing it better. Go play your Cataclysm failure of a game and stop posting how bad Rift is when you only played the first 2 betas.
Hopefully they fix the areas you should not be able to get to because of the new racials. Kind of sucks getting up on a mountain and see the bounding squares for the overall zone. Then again, it was nifty that running into the white border did not crash the computer but rather they just respawn you at the closest rez point.
Considering the "beta" ends today, that the headstart begins in 3 days, and the main launch is 5 days after that - while it is definitely one of the most polished betas (heck, even more polished than games that have been out for years) - there are still some flaky things that need to be resolved. Have to figure that to an extent the headstart will basically be Beta8 - the paid beta - prior to the game going live.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Thats exactly right. Even at realease theres going to be some bugs. All games have them. Some more then others. I havent seen anything game breaking yet. A few class balance issues, but then again thats the norm in all games. Trion, has been doing a wonderful job fixing the bugs. Even taking the server down for 30 mins during beta to fix gameplay mechanics. Trion has been watching, listening, and fixing. In my 10 years or so beta testing I cant remember the last time a Developer was so active in getting there game fixed very fast and one that listens and responds to the community. Cudos to Trion.
Love it or hate it, mmo's, and the internet in general, show the true nature of humanity. We may put this thing called civilization over it, but we are all human underneath, and we are instinctually evil, and harsh creatures.
Welcome to the realization philosophers have known for a very long time.
Rift is going to be another good game that fails because it copies things from every other game we have burned out on and keeps some of the bad stuff intact as well and like most others it fails to add anything new or even creative...
I find it to be more like conan and warhammer than warcraft as the world definately feels alive and epicly at war unlike warcraft but it just does not float my boat but i am an old and jaded mmo'er whom has played and burned on them all and would like something fresh and new for once instead of regurgitated gameplay...
Im not knocking the game i played the last 2 betas avidly and enjoyed the content to a certain point but it isnt worth the price to buy plus 15 a month as it brings nothing new and way to much yesteryears thinking in some content..
If Rift does not work out for me, i am just going to go back and look at a book for the next couple of years (Time progression eq servers!)
Seriously it has good and bad like every other game out there is it worth a walk by i think the beta was just that ... Will it fail i doubt that, i think that the and then what in 3 months will be the interesting point.
Give a person something completely new and different, most of the time they will be afraid.
It's human nature to want change, yet fear it at the same time.
All games in all genres have certain conventions they uphold, moving from title to title with little tweaks and adjustments made to fit that particular piece.
What the difference between Halo, Call of Duty, Kill Zone, and Resistence?
At their core, they all share the EXACT same set of fundamentals.
At the base, they all share similar control schemes, weapon types, UI features, and a plethora of other things.
At the edges, they have many variations and unique tidbits that differentiate them from one another.
A game is the summary of it's parts. I could write you an essay the ways in which WoW is exactly like EvE online. It would make sense and only a fool would argue against the logic behind my arguments. I could also write you an essay on the ways in which they are different, and people would generally accept my conclusions without hesistation.
Why?
Because people consciously look for the differences, we look for what is unique and different. Homogeneity is a concept more so at our subconscious level. Something has to "feel" right and familiar despite its differences even if we can't really put a finger on why or how.
The point?
There are multiple "schools of thought" when it comes to what makes a "good" design. The MMO genre is still quite young, many things are still being figured out, the technology is advancing rapidly, though there have emerged some designs that have proven, time and time again, to resonate well with players - and others that don't.
I'm all for originality and creativity, but sacrificing much of the fundamentals that make a game "feel" right in order to force ingenuity has never reasonated well and likely never will.
Meh this game isn't anything special. Ofcourse it won't fail, but I wouldn't say it's going to flourish. It will be just like WAR, Aion, AoC.. All good games, for a select group. There are much better games to look forward to this year.. By the end of this year, rift will be in the backbunner..

I haven't encountered this issue at all ... but i must admit, i barely ever look at the chat.
Turn the chat off ... problem fixed
I'm done with Rift!!!
Done with the beta I tell you ....
Give me the realised game!!!
Well, 24th is not close enough, hehe.

The community is comprised of bitter ex-WoW players. They're likely not going to leave after beta, it's the perfect ingredient for a bad community.
The good that will come of this is that the WoW-community will likely improve when the complainers leave for Rift.
Collector's editions are scams.
This is the reason I hate it when MMO's have global chats. You get to watch all the drama and cussing unfold while you play. I don't think the game's been treating me -that- badly so far though. And upon launch, I hope the RP servers will actually have RP, and not tons of OOC chat.
