From what the OP and others says it seems Rift is just a polished version of WAR (with less pvp)... now in my opinion this is not a bad thing, in fact is probably an advantage.
It had been down at least three times including the one we discussed. First I grabbed a shower. Second I went to the store. This third one I shared a pizza with the GF...
...the Head Start is basically Beta8. Things are still being tweaked for the actual release.
Eh, I don't see how the servers getting taken down for ~2-30 minutes (seriously, the first time it said "down for 30 minutes", I fired up PVKII and then a guy I chatted with whilst playing sent me a message over Steam saying, "Server's back up!" straight after I connected) is such a hassle. Especially since every time they've done it, it's lowered queues by quite a bit because they're allowing more and more people to connect.

I still not going to subscribe though.
Not really. The engine is a lot better than WAR's, the graphics are better, the public quests are better, the public rifts are fun etc etc.
It's like WAR but fun, if you want.
I do wish they'd put in some open world RvR.

Or he could've played in the open beta instead like everyone else considering the game did.
If someone doesn't like this game then they sure as hell won't like WOW, or LOTRO, War, etc.. because Rift is from the same mold as those games if not a ton more polished then that last of the three games mentioned at release.
Don't make sweeping statements like this. They tend to be generally false. As for me, never played WoW or War, but been playing LOTRO for a long time. LOTRO is very different from Rift, and I feel it caters roughly to different types of players
IMHO Two things LOTRO has better than Rift: 1) the Lore 2) The Community. Both for me are crucial.
Of course, I have friend will play Rift because of PvP or more quick paced actions. To each its own.

Lore and Community are subjective qualities based on personal tastes and is primarily irrelevant to the OP's complaints.
LOTRO IS a theme-park cookie cutter leveling game just as Rift is and WoW, etc. That's not saying that LOTRO sucks either but to sit there and say that LOTRO is somehow unique outside of personal preference for stuff such as Lore or Community is absurd. The OP doesn't like Rift for the same reasons he would dislike WoW, LOTRO and Warhammer..aka because they are theme-park, level based games with linear quest progressions and/or end games.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

don't think you've actually played it when you say its unpolished. its obvious you're trolling just for that alone, and just repeating everything else taht you read here. the game is more polished than most MMOs thats been out for 2 years + i have not run into a single bug yet in headstart. and in the betas (beta 3) the only bug i found was one i had on my rogue i couldn't get the Ranger soul, quest giver just wouldn't give me it. beta 4 it was fixed for me.
the game is deffinitly not ground breaking and in all honestly offers nothing new, but idc i'm having fun and thats all that counts to me.
OP: I stoped reading at the "Unpolished" part. Rift is by far the MOST polished MMO at release! bar none! So there, You are just raging .
But dont even attempt saying Rift is Unpolished , I challenge you to mention ONE mmorpg that was more polished at release than Rift is atm ( btw Rift is not officialy released yet!) And I will Paypal you 60 bucks .
To me Rift is like a speed bumb. Yes I know it sounds like a bad joke, but one of the slang terms for a speed bumb is Lazy Cop. Rift is pretty much Lazy GM. Why? Because Rifts and Invasions are basically little more than micro events on timers so GM don't have to come up with events to get players engaged in the game. In theory it sounds like a great Idea, in practice it gets boring quick.
Which is really why events in other mmo's only happen once or twice a year with the gm's working out the storys for them and getting the players involved by changing how zones look during the event. These events go down in history as those you had to be there moments. Most of mine are from EQ, and I saw one in WoW that was more player run than gm but still. They are specail for what they are. Little moments that happen once and never happen again but mark the game forever.
I remember one where two gm's were bored, got online and took the form of rival gods. Recruited all the low levels from the human and dark elf newbie zones, and had a little pvp war, winner took control of the losers city for a month. It was one of those fun little things. It happened once, for a while every low level got to lord it over the high levels that were excluded. Then it went back to normal and faded into history.
The rifts and invasions on the other hand happen about every 10 minutes, and even if they take a town nothing changes. Some high levels roll in and clean it out. You don't suddenly walk up on a village that was normal five minutes ago, now torn assunder by crawling vines with every merchant in it driven off to a camp outside of town. Then have to clear the town and rebuild it. If they had coded that to happen when a town fell, well I'd play that game.
Not playing rift so i don't know how polished it is at launch, but LoTRo was pretty much perfect at launch. I never ran into a single bug or issue. And the mini raids in the head start to get our crafting items were a blast. Twenty people to kill a normal level eighteen mob.
This game is really good. Yeah, O.K it's nothing marvelous but its really hooked me. The story IS good. The quests are... good, but the same as other MMOs. Rifts are like an addition to an already great MMO, so how can you even complain about them? PvP is fair at the moment, but I reckon they'll improve it relatively quickly.
Trion have sold over 1 million copies of the game just from preorders. And that's good, because plenty of people will be experiencing a great game.
Its perfectly fine if you don't like the game, or hate it for that matter. But for the love of god, don't embarrass yourself by
1: Claiming your opinion is fact
2: Crying about buying a game when you did no research at all, you had every opportunity to try out the beta. And its almost impossible to not know what the game is about if you have some interest in it. If you spent 5 mins researching you would know this.
3: Blaming the hype, how mindless are you? You just follow everything and hope you'll like it too because everyone else does? Without ever looking into what it exactly is?
One of the worst posts I have ever read in here, how lazy and unreasonable can you possibly get ?
Unpolished Turd springs to mind. Made the bad decision to buy it. Was enjoying it until i went through the Rift thingy. Then it went rapidly downhill. Boring linear quests, graphically not particularly good even on ultra settings. Bad respawn rates. Simply uninspiring. Will plummet like Warhammer. Don't kid yourself this is good because it simply isn't.
And don;t mention those annoying Rift things. The big tentacles annoyingly spawn every few minutes. You run to the area. Haven't a clue whats going on but button bash. Its simply a mess.
The world is small and linear. I gave up the grind at 14. Its forgettable. Never again will i believe the hype. Blizzard you are redeemed.
I really don't know where the hell your coming rom with this. The graphics are very good on ultra settings and the worlds and monsters are very well designed. Respawn rates are very very high as well so I am not sure where your coming from with that wiether. It is definitly a very linear game but to call the world small is also the biggest crock of shit I have ever heard its very very massive. Are you serious about your assessment? I enjoy the game a lot and I know I sound biast then because of it but I cannot simply see where you are coming from with regards to the graphics/respawn rates/world size...
LOL i can't actually believe some of you guys get so wound up over my comments. Take it with a pinch of salt and stop stressing yourselves over it. Life goes on in the big bad world. End of the day its simply a game and an unpolished one at that. Enjoy those Rifts. They're so cool!!!!!!! LOL
I played the RIFT betas to level 26 . The OP at level 14 would 'nt have got to see even the first dungeon at level 17 . Did he do any of the Warfronts ? I remember feeling that WoW was pretty abysmal untill I hit the early 20s when I first played 6 years ago . You simply can't tell what potential an mmo has untill you get a little further along in a game . The only reason I did'nt buy was issue I had with fps on my machine . Loved the game will play it when I have a better pc . Best mmo since WoW . If you don't like this give them up because I doubt you'll like anything to be released in the next 5-10 years .

If this is a paperweight game then WoW is a paperweight in zero gravity . I'll admit to liking the bgs in WoW still and I'll nip back a couple of times a year to do them and visit old friends that play . These threads started by "new" accounts are starting to crack me up. I pity them, I do.
THAT was not only funny, but very insightful.

If Rift is unpolished then Blizzard games are completely broken whey they get released.
It's always a gamble splashing out on a new mmo without trying beta first.
I probably would have bought Rift had I not tested SWTOR first.
Simply put, TOR blows Rift away.
I did like the look of the class system in Rift though, quite cool.
