     From your own blog:

"...You know what? Let you in on a little secret. 2011 just might be a stellar year for MMORPG fans and the first quarter is about to be one of the best we've had in a long time in this genre.  Why? Because of a game called Rift: Planes of Telara..."

"...Rift: PoT is a good game, better than average in my book, but it isn’t all sunshine and lollipops..."

Granted that I've copied/pasted this out of context, and your blog does go on and explain many of the game's shortcomings.  But the impression your blog gives is generally positive, and now your attitude towards Rift sounds generally negative.

Not that changing your mind is a bad thing... just own up to it...

I have not changed my opinion.   If you read what I wrote in this thread and in my blog you'll see that I say pretty much the same thing and tell people that if this kind of game is for you to give it a shot - to actually play it.   The game however is not enough for "me".   After getting to level 35 in beta I had played enough of the game to see that it it what it is - a theme park MMORPG with limited game play options and will end up like most other games - all about gear.   If you like that type of game...then this game might just be a great alternative to WoW.

Like it or not people need a carrot attached to the string to keep them going. Take for example CoH which has no loot and came out the same time as WoW, we all know how ended up getting more subs. Heck even they have implemented a version of loot, currently there is no MMO out there that is not about gear.

I know its fun to come in the forums and whine about things, but if you don't like gear/loot you shouldn't be playing MMORPGs in general....

Loot and or gear does not have to be the end all be all of these games.

Name one MMO that doesn't have loot as part of end game? WAR tried it because Mythic listened to players and made loot less relevant and didn't exactly work out that well. Funny after they started losing subs they did 180 and implemented tiered loot system.

That's because War is, just like most recently released games, a theme park game.   The only way the developers can keep people playing theme parks is with silly gimmicks like gear, loot, and achievements.   Most theme park games are pretty shallow.   I am not knocking that style of game...it has it's place, but to say as you seem to think, that loot and gear is the only thing to keep people playing is just silly and shows a lack of imagination on your part when there are many, many other ways to keep people playing.

No there isn't that is human nature you need to have some carrot attached to string to keep players playing even FPS like halo reach have implement some version of loots. As i before name one MMORPG that doesn't have loot.

Even Eve has loot in PvE training skills, salvage, minning, ships etc. You dont all fly around in Titans in day one.

If you call Eve endgame loot oriented, I give up. Ok you win.

This coming from a Mount & Blade fan!  Sure I play WoW...not for long!  Rift is such a breath of fresh air.   Last night I knew we were going to have a snow day today(and we did, so I stocked up on noms at the store) and last night I got to play Rift for a very long time.   Had to force myself to turn off the stinking computer!   An MMORPG hasn't done that to me since - forever.

I am playing a Cleric and loving it!  My choices are secret...but it is like playing a DK Blood tank/pally healer/and DAoC cleric all in one!  Just awesome!  Having so much fun!

My problem is I didn't want to stop playing last night...it was really hard, but I still have obligations so my time came to and end late last night and I was a sad gamer.   I will play a bit more today when I have the time before beta 5 comes to and end and then I'll write my preview for those that haven't tried it.   Game is solid.  Game is challenging.  Game is fun.  Key word here is fun!

...but then in subsequenty posts (literally days later), you've said:

i will try to answer your question the best i can.

Rift is a traditional fantasy mmorpg similar to eq and wow and lord of the rings.  it is basically high fantasy and there is some technological element to it.  The gameplay is tab target and use hotbars to fire off attacks similar to wow.  The difference in rift and other fantasy mmo games is the game is much more stable and polished than any other mmo ive seen in the last 10 years.

The great thing about the game is the rifts and the character soul system.  rifts might just be public quests, i dont know as i never played warhammer, but they are an incredible amount of fun.  The game has good exploration and rewards for actually going off the beaten path and the game actually has puzzles you can find and figure out.  The soul system is done really well and the ability to change roles at nearly any time can be a blessing.  if your tank disconnects or ragequits someone will probably havea a tanking role so you can finish the dungeon.

The bad thing about the game is it is very similar to wow and eq and lotro and any other fantasy mmorpg but it has its own world and is not limited by pre established lore like some major ip games.  crafting is about the same as other games just different names but it is the same basic crafting system most games use. collect ingredients and make items.

altogether if you like wow but tired of azeroth or wow in general and looking for something new then rifts will be a good game for you but if you are tired of these types of games then rift wont be the game for you.

Rift is exactley like When WoW added Battlegrounds... so just like Original WoW pretty much.

LOL - I think not.   I'm done with this genre for the time being.    Until someone comes out with a Mount and Blade/Age of Empires MMORPG that is.   Besides I am really getting into my writing now, new job around the corner, plus I have my dream job I am still trying to figure out how to make it happen.  So I have little time to be playing an MMORPG right now.  ^_^

If however, you are looking for something really different...I mean really different...Rift is not it.  It is still WoW in a different package.

And last but certainly not least:

It is annoying as...couldn't take it any more.   Just stopped playing.

Can you now see how some people might think that you have, indeed, changed your opinion on the game?

That's because as I said in another post on another thread not long ago that I too had gotten caught up in the hype(glad I dodged that bullet - look for it - I did say this) from my first few hours of playing the game.  It can happen to anyone.   After playing through 3 beta events though and getting to level 35 I learned otherwise.  I still stand by what I said.  The game is fun.  It is challenging.   If this is the type of game you like to play...play it!  Seriously...have fun!  Enjoy it for all it is worth.    But as for me(read carefully what I write next, I have said this before and will not repeat it again)...after playing it for a bit...I learned it was not the game I was expecting.   So I will not be playing it.    Again though...it you like the game...than play it - seriously...just enjoy it and play it.

I think Teala just wants to play Rift and is in denial at the moment! :)

    RL>MMO  Goodluck !

Its a perfect rehersal of a EQ fan back then , exactly the same . its too hysterical .

I do not change my opinion.  Show me where I have ever changed my opinion of the game?

     From your own blog:

"...You know what? Let you in on a little secret. 2011 just might be a stellar year for MMORPG fans and the first quarter is about to be one of the best we've had in a long time in this genre.  Why? Because of a game called Rift: Planes of Telara..."

"...Finally after a long wait...we might actually see the launch of a really cool MMORPG! Yeah! ..."

After getting to level 35 in beta I had played enough of the game to see that it is what it is - a theme park MMORPG with limited game play options and will end up like most other games - all about gear.   If you like that type of game...then this game might just be a great alternative to WoW.

I have to disagree...  for example you've posted:

Oh and one last thing.   Try as I might I cannot get myself to log into WoW.   I want to play Rift!  Seriously.   Rift is such a breath of fresh air.   So yeah...I am suffering.

    Also:

Agree.   I was sad when beta 5 ended.    I didn't want to stop playing.

And last but certainly not least:

General Discussion > Didn't think I'd say this...but I am actually having fun!

I will forever continue to be a voice against such tired game elements.   It is time for a change.   Rift does not change it.  Rift gets it wrong.

    Also:

Actually I have no intention on playing it.  I also tried it during Beta and decided it wasn't for me in my first 30 minutes (literally... I typed /played right before logging out!)

Thank you for supporting the non-McMMO by refraining from RIFT.

I have made many mistakes in life but I can at least say I havent purchased any of those games listed :)

I on the other hand have bought them all, played them and have a first hand experience with them. Which gives a bit more weight to my opinion, which unlike yours, is not based on second hand "opinions".

100% Agreed, I played for a while on beta and within the first hour of playing I couldn't stand it anymore. It has that generic, grungy feeling to it and wasn't very welcoming or friendly appealing IMO. It felt closed and unpopulated.

Bought and played Darkfall, Mortal Online, Fallen Earth, Xsyon, Perpetuum, or Earthrise have you? And I don't mean just one or two, I mean ALL of them. That is the only way to say you truly support small indie developers. And no in my opinion Eve doesn't count unless you've been playing it from its first unpleasent days, as I consider it to be financially successful and has too large a player base to be considered a small indie company anymore.

This idea that not buying a mainstream game can somehow magically make nonmainstream game ideas desireable to large MMO investors is about as silly as putting blanket over your head to hide from the boogey man.

Is it fun for you? Yes, but i havnt played WoW in 3 years or any game like WoW so Rift seems refreshing to me. But if i just finished playing WoW for 5 years i would probably hate Rift

Is it addicting? Very addicting. Especially the class system.

What are the professions like? Crafting is boring same old same old super shallow stuff you get in WoW. Not even a smattering of innovation here.

What is the PvE like? Dungeons, raids, rifts, quests etc. same old but its fun for me. dungeons are fun but nothing new. And when im bored of questing I have fun running around destroying rifts.

What is the PvP like? I have only done instanced pvp and its nothing new but fun.

Does anything about Rift standout as different? Class system is not really different but certainly more robust then some games which is nice. Also only having to role 4 characters and playing many of the souls is a great idea. Having 4 roles to choose from is a breath of fresh air. My rouge can heal/support tank and dps which is great. Rifts are a lot of fun and at least for me they are new as i have never played a game with public quests.

i dont think you know what indie means. indie does not = failing low population game. indie means independent from giant companies like EA and activision. therefore EVE online is "indie" and shoudl be supported just like all the rest.

unbiased opinion?  There is no such thing.

All opinions are biased to the opinionators personal preferences.  Even saying unbiased opinion is silly.  Play it yourself and make up your own mind.

Which, I can tell you from experience, doesnt'... work! image

But sure, "not buying" rift has nothing to do with supportiing indy games. Buying indy games is what supports indy games.

Except that it seems a good many players don't want or won't accept indy games unless they have AAA budgets and polish.

Whoops sorry, I didn't mean to imply that Eve did not deserve support or that it had somehow become part of the "evil overloards" conglomerate. Just that since CCP is a multimillion dollar company these days, with, I think two more, games in development, I don't rank it among the fledgling game developer studios anymore.

To resort to hyperbole, CCP is your neighborhood pub band that now has a couple of gold albums under their belt, and is about to go on a major world wide tour. While the other companies I've mentioned are still stuck in the rubbish, dank, smoke fllled, basment clubs, with the beat up mismatched furniture and the perpetually backed up plumbing facilities, playing to an audience made up mostly of the other band memebers families.

Its takes almost everyone that other MMO's have done and adds its own color of polish I've never seen. WoW doesn't even shine this well.

Its nothing new. But I fucking love it. I'll be hanging around for awhile till the firt xpack, DAOC style batle grounds, PvP Dungeons and what not. :)

Asking for an unbiased opinion in these forums is like asking a used car salesman if he's honest :)

I've played SWG, EQ2, Wow, Eve, UO and so on and just bought Rift a couple of days ago after playing Wow for the past 2 years. Anyone who has played or is playing Wow knows that the game has grown stale and this last expansion proves that Blizzard has no immediate intention of doing anything different or innovating with their game anytime soon.

Enter: Rift. Here's a game that really brings nothing new to the genre (and they said never said they were going to) and is a brand new company/IP and releases a finely tuned, more polished game than most established companies. I find it to be a blend of EQ2 and Wow but with much better graphics and the dynamic Rifts really bring the game alive and are really alot of fun.

Keep in mind that this is just a freshman release - Trion has alot of room for expansion and I'm expecting them to surpass all that Wow and EQ2 has done in the future based on what I've seen so far - their long-term success depends on it.

There are many games coming out that will challenge that success like SWTOR (which..like many many people I'm very much looking forward to) GW2 to name just 2. How Trion handles the upcoming expansions/patches will determine whether or not they stick around.

Is the game worth the 50-60 bucks? You bet! If you like fantasy based games you'll love it absolutely. The UI is excellent and intuitive...felt like putting on an old favorite shirt. The soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in an MMO ever...I actually leave it on while I'm questing and there are many voice overs which surprised me.

If you're looking for a completely different game - this isn't it. If you're looking for great fantasy game which has tons of potential and runs extremely well - it's for you!

Grats to Trion for executing the best run...bug free new release I've ever been a part of!

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

Played in most the betas (no alpha :( experience).

    Is it fun for you?

I love it to death because it took the best of what I enjoyed in Warhammer and Wow and then grabbed the look of Dark Age of Camelot and the idea that 32 classes is ok to have (granted it's 8 per soul but good lord man)...and made a fun as heck product.

    Is it Addicting?

For me - and for the entire WoW guild that has hard core raided since 2004's Molten Core?  Yeah we call it crack.

    What are the professions like?

Crafting or player?  Crafting is simple and wide reaching - not much diffferent that a WoW meets Vanguard Saga of Heroes model (if that helps).  Player classes are set up so you have the choice to be who YOU want to be. Other than Dark Age of Camelot no one has done a very good job of that.  Too much vanilla these days in mmorpgs.

    PVE

One word:  FUN - I can't elaborate Im at work but god those Rifts make Warhammer's failed public quest system look like crud.

    PvP

Not  a big fan yet - sorry but Dark Age of CAmelot was so ahead of the pack - it's okay if you like flag captures however.  I have hopes this will improve.

    What's Different about RIft

It's hardly different at all on the outside.  But peel the layers and you have this kick butt community (granted  I play on an RP pve server Estrael so I am lucky)...and you have a world that is engaging and fun and as warhammer's propoganda team used to claim - IS IN YOUR FACE fun.

RIfts took a lot of good out of other titles and made it work and made it graphically believable and appealing.  I played warhammer for two level 40 toons that I worked hard on (startted in beta).  But my heart was never with the game - it was an option OTHER than WoW which  I played a lot as well.  I deleted both games when Rifts was installed.

Until Dark Age of Camelot 2 exists - I'm  a Rift fan (for years to come).

I have played every mo that has come out since the 90s,i liked wow for four years so with that said you have a idea of my op rift is good and way better then Aion or warhammer i find my self unable to log when i should and the level 20-30 zones are a blast and the rifts start taking strats to beat like destroy this get out of this fire ect.

only level 29 atm but i keep liking it more and more i tank and dps love both.have done the first two instances also a blast the level 25 is better and takes strats to do.I found Aion to be the most boring game i ever played and warhammers quest boring as well Rift just seems to get every thing right ..the balance i like very grp friendly for harcore and casuals.
