I loved GW1 so cant wait for GW2.

I also hate anything to do with SW so wont even look at SW:ToR.

    GW2 all the way.

I hate generic MMOs and SWTOR seems to be a bit too near this road for my likings. Will probably still get it once the game price goes down to play the campaign cause I loved KOTOR.

I used to say gw2 but now I'm definitely on board for swtor.

Which game will be more (financially) successful?

Most likely SWTOR. It simply has a wider audience. While Guildwars 2 will have to lure every customer with gameplay features, SWTOR will have people jumping at it regardless of quality because of the Star Wars and BioWare logos.

Which am I more hyped for?

Guildwars 2 hands down. It's actually moving the genre forward, rather than encouraging stagnant game design, which SWTOR doesn't only seem to be doing but its devs actually believe this is the only way to create a sucessful MMO.

Not that SWTOR will be a bad game, but it'll be the same tired old template we've been playing since EQ/WoW.

    GW2

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

I'll most likely be playing both as I have before; (WoW and GW1).

It always amuses me that a B2P game is compared to a P2P game though.

Comparing GW2 vs MMO is like comparing COD:Black Ops vs Rift or FIFA11 vs WoW.

    Doesn't make sense.

    SWTOR.

GW2 is just another fantasy MMO, I'm not certain as to whether or not I'll buy it... pointing towards no atm.

The developers belive you shouldn't break the traditional mold. Which is exactly what TOR and also GW2 are doing but they are throwing in new ideas. TOR has just as much new elements as GW2 is adding the the genre.

When you don't follow the game its easy to see why many believe TOR is a standard MMO but once you read about the many features it has, it becomes pretty clear.

GW2 and TOR will both be great games, to say one is weaker than the other for any reason (especially when they are not out) really just shows your a fanboy of which ever game your defending. In reality you have no idea how either game will play out. Can't tell you the amount of games that look awesome in videos and on paper and turn out to be complete let downs.

    How about neither?

I'm just curious to see how it all looks after the nuclear exchanges.

I wish I could say SW: ToR, but I think it will be a lot more of the same. GW2 gets my vote.

  • gambe1gambe1 Member UncommonPosts: 123

SW TOR definitely. I do like GW2, and i do like it's features. But story driven MMO, well that's a dream for me since i started playing MMO's over a decade ago. :)

    SWTOR

I'm not a Starwars story fan but I like the rich, futuristic setting a lot. It has the potential to be something very different.

GW2 is another fantasy mmorpg and despite great graphics and animations, and the repackinging of quests into 'dynamic events', I dont expect it to keep me interested very long.

This is mainly due to typical GW game mechanics which I don't like at all:

    - Teleporting all over the place

    - Non-consensual pvp being a big no-no

In the main, open world on your server, everyone is your buddy. You are allowed to enjoy the scenery and kill npc's together. But "THOUGH SHALLT NOT BE EXCITED BY THE PROSPECT OF SOMETHING UNEXPECTED AND OF PLAYER ORIGIN HAPPENING!" (Other than unexpectantly getting verbally violated in local chat ... )

Perhaps cross-server Pvp in the mists will be a lot of fun for the likes of me, but it is consensual and Charr will be killing Charr, Asura will be killing Asura and Humans will be killing Humans, etc. I wonder how they will try and fit that into the lore, hehe. "Different realities / dimensions digging it out on a semi-astral plane of existence by defending and assaulting medieval castles and strongholds".

Also characters can enter as a sidekick which will allow them to play as a higher level character which is another artificial aspect.

The open game world being fought over by different factions and the actual prospect of pvp servers is much more appealing to me. I want my world pvp enemies to have a name, rather than being rotated every week. Multiple factions makes for a much more lively server community.

Mists could be dreams :)) easiest way:P

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

I'm personally much more hyped for SW:ToR. Mainly because it's clear what it will be and what it will not be.

It will be an MMO focussed on storytelling, PvE and companions. It will have a PvP, space-fighting and crafting component on the side. It won't revolutionize the genre but it will add a meaningfull and highly entertaining component, storytelling, to the mix. Along with some new things to spice things up like companions, space-combat and dialogue systems.

In short I think SW:ToR seems to be taking a more safe and certain route. While it can, of course, still fail I do think that Bioware has mixed enough of the old to be certain of playability and enough of the new to be certain of distinguishing themselves.

GW2 on the other hand seems to be trying to deliver it all. Personal storylines, a persistant world that will change based on player actions, Server vs Server PvP, e-sport grade arena PvP, Abandoning the DPS-Healer-Tank trinity, more skill-based combat etc. And all of this without monthly fees.

I'm not saying that GW2 will fail. I'm just saying that I'm not going to put my faith in them until they actually deliver.

Bioware seems to be promising a car that runs on electricity and can do 300km/h. ArenaNet seems to be promising a flying car that runs on solar cells and with built in gatling laser guns.

I would say this is a fair assessment of what both companies are trying to do. Personally, I'm going the Anet on this because I would much rather have a flying, solar-powered car than a regular electric one. More ambition means it will fall all the harder if it fails, but it also means it will be so much better if it succeeds.

The problem I see is that with so many promised features that are in the end still quite vague it's just too easy to imagine them falling short on all of them.

The skill combinations system for example is still a skill combination system with 100 possible combinations and 5 possible combinations.

Dynamic events are still dynamic events if they only cycle through 3 possible states ( Village Safe, Village under Centaur Attack and Village Ruined. ) compared to say 25 possible states ( Village hungry, Village diseased, Village infiltrated by cult etc. )

Server versus Server PvP can be 25vs25 on a map with 3 objectives or 150vs150 on a map with 10 objectives.

A solar-powered flying car could have a maximum altitude of 100km with a maximum speed of 500km/h in any and all directions with 1 hour of charging equalling 10 hours of flight. Or you could get 10m maximum altitude, 100km/h speed if going straight forward but only 10km/h speed if going up, down or backwards with a full day charging equalling only an hour of flight.

This is all you could ever want to know about dynamic events. There are more events than just "centaurs attack a town".

I believe they did mention there will be quite a few cross-class combos. I'm not exactly sure but I believe the last number I hear was "hundreds".

Server v Server v Server PvP could also be 500 vs 500 vs 500 with 50 to 100 objectives. We don't know but I have confidence that Anet will make perfectly massive.

You talk about all these limits to this solar-powered flying car but don't realize that you might end up only being able to go 1 mile in your electric car before having to recharge it. I'm not trying to bash TOR or Bioware but IMO they are getting more undeserved hype than GW2 is simply because of some big names. Bioware has also promised a lot of features that could end up just flopping or not working like the fans want them too. For example, everyone says that there will be 8 stories in TOR yet I only see 8 starting chapters (ala DA:O) then them all converging into 1 or 2 stories.
