I would say this is a fair assessment of what both companies are trying to do. Personally, I'm going the Anet on this because I would much rather have a flying, solar-powered car than a regular electric one. More ambition means it will fall all the harder if it fails, but it also means it will be so much better if it succeeds.
The problem I see is that with so many promised features that are in the end still quite vague it's just too easy to imagine them falling short on all of them.
The skill combinations system for example is still a skill combination system with 100 possible combinations and 5 possible combinations.
Dynamic events are still dynamic events if they only cycle through 3 possible states ( Village Safe, Village under Centaur Attack and Village Ruined. ) compared to say 25 possible states ( Village hungry, Village diseased, Village infiltrated by cult etc. )
Server versus Server PvP can be 25vs25 on a map with 3 objectives or 150vs150 on a map with 10 objectives.
A solar-powered flying car could have a maximum altitude of 100km with a maximum speed of 500km/h in any and all directions with 1 hour of charging equalling 10 hours of flight. Or you could get 10m maximum altitude, 100km/h speed if going straight forward but only 10km/h speed if going up, down or backwards with a full day charging equalling only an hour of flight.
This is all you could ever want to know about dynamic events. There are more events than just "centaurs attack a town".
I believe they did mention there will be quite a few cross-class combos. I'm not exactly sure but I believe the last number I hear was "hundreds".
Server v Server v Server PvP could also be 500 vs 500 vs 500 with 50 to 100 objectives. We don't know but I have confidence that Anet will make perfectly massive.
You talk about all these limits to this solar-powered flying car but don't realize that you might end up only being able to go 1 mile in your electric car before having to recharge it. I'm not trying to bash TOR or Bioware but IMO they are getting more undeserved hype than GW2 is simply because of some big names. Bioware has also promised a lot of features that could end up just flopping or not working like the fans want them too. For example, everyone says that there will be 8 stories in TOR yet I only see 8 starting chapters (ala DA:O) then them all converging into 1 or 2 stories.
While we are clearing up misinformation, i'd like to point out why people say it's 8 stories

Undeserved hype? Where? I didn't see much. I think Bioware/SWTOR is instead getting a lot more undeserved hate and scorn than GW2: SWG fans who hate it that SWTOR isn't their long expected SWG2 that they've been really waiting for, sandbox fans and jaded, burnt out themepark haters who dislike the whole model that SWTOR stands for, MMO gamers who dislike BW's approach to questing with emphasis on story immersion and find it a distraction of their race to level cap.
In fact, I can't recall one game that has encountered this much hate and passionate dislike as SWTOR, a lot of it undeserved.
It seems to me that a lot of the current generation of MMORPG gamers don't like it that MMORPG's can/will be successful unless it fits their narrow range of taste. Me, I think that both MMO's will prove to be great MMO's and successful.
As for the TOR class quest lines, these will be fully unique from start to end, even more, someone who follow a fully Dark Side path within a class and next a fully Light Side path within a class will discover that they're as distinct and unique from each other as if was the story quest lines from another class.

GW2 has a lot more undeserved hype than TOR. GW2 looks good but how many people make it sound as if its the second coming?

GW2 has a lot more undeserved hype than TOR. GW2 looks good but how many people make it sound as if its the second coming?
Most people (as in regular people, not people here) hype TOR simply because it is a Star Wars game being made by Bioware. Most people hype GW2 because they are impressed by what they have seen. Machinima gave GW2 Best of Show for PAX Prime and GW2 also got Best Online Game at Gamescom. I think that goes to show that more people were impressed by what they saw of GW2 than what they saw of TOR. Sure people are acting like its the second coming, but then again they are doing it because they are impressed.
Most people (as in regular people, not people here) hype TOR simply because it is a Star Wars game being made by Bioware.
I'm a victim of this (or was). For two whole years. Then I actually opened my eyes to see that (IMO) the actual game looks rather mediocre. Made me learn that Dev + IP isn't enough to make a game good. Even in TOR's case.
GW2 on the other hand, actually seems like a great game. It feels worth hyping for since it's got nothing to do with the Dev + IP (I'm not exactly a massive fan of the first GW), but that the information and footage surrounding the game looks very promising.
I really want to look forward to TOR though, and I'm sure it will have great storytelling/lore. It's just the rest of the game... Either way, I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Just not predicting that at this point.
Anyway, I'm still looking forward to both. I will say that I'm a bit disappointed with the art style and combat of SWTOR. I was hoping they would have more of a Mass Effect look and combat feel. The combat is subjective but just from the videos it looks a bit clunky. Bioware has always been pretty average/poor at combat but have made up for it with with their engaging stories. I'm still getting it but I'm just a bit disappointed in the visuals is all.
I am super hyped for both, but I have to go with gw2. Since the everything that I have read and watched shows less inovation from TOR. Don't get me wrong I really got to play it just to see how the fell of it pans out. Still with everything I have researched on the two titles I have to say GW2.
TOR's graphics have increased a lot since we first saw it. Perhaps it will be on par with GW2 at launch?
Probably not. The common consensus seems to be that TOR is closer to release, and even if TOR's graphics keep improving, whos to say that GW2's doesn't. Seeing as GW2 has more time to improve upon what is already impressive I don't think TOR's will compare. Art style though is subjective and I know some people prefer TOR on that.
TOR's graphics have increased a lot since we first saw it. Perhaps it will be on par with GW2 at launch?
My problem isn't really the graphics of it. My issue is the art style they went for. I guess too colorful is my complaint. I prefer the darker tones of a game like Mass Effect. I do agree that from the latest videos that the actual graphics have improved.
Sw:Tor, After 12 years of Fantasy MMO's It has lost the fun for me, If I see another Sword or fireball in a thousand years ,it would be to soon.
I tryed tons of games over the years and non of them grabbed me like AC1 and WoW , all the years I felt something was lacking but after much thought it wasn't that the games sucked (well some might of lacked) but it was just I was so burned out on fantasy that no matter what came out and how good it was I couldn't get into it, so untill Sw:tor comes out I'll stick with WoW even thought I'm burned out on fantasy , I just don't have it in me to learn .level or play another fantasy mmo ,what does a fantasy mmo bring to the table that hasn't been done by one another or done by WoW, at least with Sw:tor it will be sci fi even if it is a WoW clone, at least it isn't another fantasy copy.
P.S I like Theme Parks an so does 90% of mmo gamers
95% of the MMO genre is fantasy and 90% of that share is all Theme Park MMO. I love my good old sandbox MMO like my first love AC 1 but I enjoy the rides alot more.
When i first heard about SW:TOR i was playing SWG. With that said i've since left SWG and after trying various others have not found an MMO i enjoy. Unlike what some posters complain about regarding SW:TOR i'm seriously looking forward to it because of what the devs said originally and continue to make the game into, Knights of the Old Republic Online. Multiplayer for that game was all that was missing, BioWare are the best choice as well in my opinion as i enjoy most of their games, specifically the Mass Effect series (can't wait for ME3) and KotOR.
I played Guild Wars for over a year and enjoyed it while i was in it, however it got tiring and repetative quickly. I know GW2 is gonna be a different game in general and i might purchase it as well but for me i'm hyped over SW:TOR.
GW2 looks like it will be another MMO disaster, much like AIon, or Tera. Alot of promise and talk and no delivery.. Not really sure about TOR, my hype has dimenished an that one aswell.
Not hyped at all for both games there themeparks, how can you be even hyped for such games is beyond me:P
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

What exactly have ArenaNet promised and not delivered on?
Take your time, I'll wait.
The promise that ANet will not deliver what it has promised may not be delivered at all, or otherwise not until the end of the year.

While we are clearing up misinformation, i'd like to point out why people say it's 8 stories
Here is where you can find DE talking about unique class stories. I'd go to about 14:00 where he starts talking about it: http://www.viddler.com/explore/realdarthhater/videos/1/1023.798/
Link of the video where they state the 200 hours:http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/starwarstheoldrepublic/video/6212670/crosshairs-interview-bioware-austin-on-star-wars-the-old-republic

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

I am looking foward to GWII, I think that game will be around around a lot longer than TOR. IMO TOR will just be another flash in the pan mmo.

Little more hyped about SW: ToR since I'm a big fan of Bioware games (especially Mass Effect series). But I feel GW2 could be a better MMO in general
Played: Guild Wars, AoC, Lotro, CoH, Warhammer, Tabula Ras, Spellborn, Second Life, Rift, Aion, Tera.
Playing: Guild Wars 2, WoT
neither
After recently watching a 10 min video of GW2's terrible gameplay im going to have to go with SWTOR on this one. Though both will be snoozfest '11

Even if I don't personally like either one (although I'm rooting for TOR), I hope at least one of them will be a smash hit.
It's been a long road for MMORPGs with very few top notch releases for quite some time.
It would be encouraging to see someone hit it out of the park.
