It seems people are raging for something new. That's the only explaination I have to justify why so many people subbed to Rift when I was sure it was going to fail.
Not a new wow though, I don't want a new WoW. Of course Rift has many other MMO elements in it, but I'm going to focus on WoW because that's what people hate most.
op / people are mistaken on that. I hope they are mistaken because I don't want to be wrong.
Nevertheless I hope op / everyone enjoys their new Rift experience. I put this in here so I don't sound like a troll.
However no matter how you look at it; it is a clone and the bigger they are…etc. I really hope this game fails. There's still time. Hopefully I'm right.
Yeah, yeah, like most games before Rift. Very impressive. WoW will shake and Rift will be #2. Let's archive this.
WoW already is shaking. Look at the number of servers Rift has and look how many people are playing and look how most of the player reviews from everywhere are overwhelmingly positive.
The games before Rift with the exception of LOTRO (which had basically no PvP) were unfinished. That's a big difference.

Wait for the end of the first month is all I'm saying, before you start patting yourselves in the shoulder. They haven't posted marketing numbers, which means that they are not high enough to be manipulated by their marketing department. My guess is that the initial sales are not as high as AoC or War were. On the other hand, the retention is expected to be a lot bigger. How big though ....
Lets just wait and see first.
(Btw, I can see the servers as well. Yesterday there was one low server in EU. Today there is none.)

It's been that way since last Thursday. As far as numbers go, They have almost 100 servers and low estimate server max pop is 20,000 for an MMO. That's well over the 1.5 million mark. That puts Rift launch better than both WAR and AoC, nevermind the actual launch went better than any other MMO ever. Seriously, the biggest complaint was people waiting to get in to play the game. If that doesn't speak volumes, I don't know what does.
I'm not patting myself on the back. I didn't do anything. Trion should be proud of what they've accomplished so far though.

Nah I even bought Rift myself. Dude many people don't have to save up to buy a game and many will actually play what they pay for. Anyway, you should go play it if you like it and remember whatever you learn from it.

Just thought you would like to know that server populations are for active players on the server. A 'full' server can be as low as 2k. Just some useful info before you start going crazy with metrics.

It's actually 5,000 on average at one time for MMOs. That doesn't change the fact that number of accounts per server is around 20,000. This means they have 20,000 paying accounts on said server. Of course some games tout larger numbers per server - like 30,000; but I choose to address the low end number.
Medium/Full servers consistently show that people are indeed playing and a sign of retention. Will this last or will they need to do server merges down the road? Quite possibly. The current outlook shows everything I have said to be true.
Unless you want people to believe that the number we should be multiplying the 100 server number by is 2,000; which I'm sure you're not suggesting.
And every attempt at saying "Rift sucks" is mocked and the "WoW hater" cries "Fanboi" makes me pity the poor person who couldnt find anything fun to do with WoW.
But, before you cry "OMG another one" Yup, I play WoW, have since early beta. Have a good group of friends in my guild who play and still enjoy the game. Can Blizzard do wrong? Damn right they can, and they have made mistakes. I still enjoy the game. Ofcourse if I didnt have the friends I've made in the game, I prolly wouldnt be enjoying it as much.
As for Rifts, I've been in ever beta event except the first. The game had a lot of promise, but in my mind fell short. So, do I think it's the "Next big MMO"? IMHO, no. Will this game gain fanboys by the boatload for their "You're not in Azeroth anymore!!!" anti wow BS advertsing? Yup, because most people who truely 'hate' WoW will jump on just because "Hey! Look they made fun of WoW, they must be cool!"
Will Rift take away from WoW? Sure, some people will jump ship because "It's the new flavor of the month" most will return when they find the end game lacks more than vanilla wow did...heh
Alot of MMO's have had high populations at the start and failed.
To me the big difference and why i think Rift might have at least a healthy population is there isnt the murderous rage against this game like with AoC, WAR and STO had when they went live. Sure there is rage but I remember this site when WAR, AoC and STO came out it was like a Rageurrican or a ragenomi or a ragequake or a .......well you get the picture.

Lore dev just made that entire section happy. The raid and dungeons guys has been answering every question I see.
The mage guy made a dedicated thread to say they are gathering all data to see if Buffs are needed.
The guy who said sabs are getting out of control has a systems designer say the changes are not final.

I'm tired of the same responses about the game that it's nothing new.
Trion never stated that they we're trying to revolutionize the MMORPG genre. Their mindset with creating the game from the beginning was to create a traditional, fantasy type MMORPG. That's exactly what they've created with Rift and nailed it. So for all the people stating it isn't next gen and doesn't really add anything to the genre besides the class system and rifts, well no shit, it isn't what Trion was aiming for.
For the people expecting something mind blowing and wanting a whole new experience within MMOs, sorry, you're out of luck. Trion has done a fatastic job at creating exactly what they've stated from the beginning: a traditional, fantasy type MMORPG.
A lot people are wanting a totally new aspect within MMOs, but you know what, there is still a lot of players out there that love to play the typical fantasy MMO. Trion has developed a very well polished game, with good graphics optimized for PCs, interesting and new lore and keeps players wanting to play.
Rift will continue to do well, maybe it won't be the "WoW killer", but fuck it. If you're into a traditional, fantasy type MMORPG that does add some interesting features into the genre, I suggest you try the game out.

Right. It's a familiar game that really doesnt warrent any great accolades and really packages much of what we're accustom to from several other games into one package, but nothing remarkable. I dont think that GW2 or SWTOR will be that remarkable, but be pretty status quo also.
Just as there isnt a facebook killer, there wont be a WoW killer; WoW is a social network, not a mmorpg. It's just the way it is.
I just wanted to throw my two cents into this conversation, but it also should be noted that Rift is one of the few MMO's other than WoW which I've seen regular advertisement for, either on TV, videos like Hulu, or on websites. Clearly Trion is pulling no punches and at least is giving the effort to get the name known.
I hardly ever saw advertisement for FFXIV for example (This is before we found out it was garbage), and even after you wouldn't have even known it was released which is odd given the brand name of FF.

I've actually seen more advetisements for Wizard101 and FreeRealms than any other games.
My biggest problem is Rift is it's just so damned boring. It's not that I "hate" it, hell I can't even muster enough energy to dislike it, I just don't understand why so many people think it's that great. I was at Best Buy buying a pc game and the girl checking me out told me I needed to grab a copy of Rift. When I told her I played in the betas and would never buy a copy because it was so boring her jaw hit the floor. I'm sorry guys but RIft is nothing special, nothing new and personally I could give a damn if it lives or dies.

I think there are equally players who're enjoying themselves immensely who can't understand that you found it so boring.
Nothing wrong with it, it's just different tastes and/or the different level of burnout regarding themepark features, mate.
What provides fun for one MMO player doesn't have to be the same for another MMO player, one person likes one movie or song, another person dislikes those and likes another movie and song.

That is pretty much how I felt about it. I played WoW for a couple of years and got sick of it. When I played Rift beta, it just seemed more of the same. For people who hate WoW or are sick of it, I don't understand playing a game so similar. I guess I am just done with MMOs that use this type of format.
Does everyone want to know why Rift fans are so hopeful for this game? ok so I linked the 1.01 changes which are tweaks and bug fixes and they are adding the 10 man Rift raids. This was just posted by the lead CM. I have never seen a MMO company ever(not even Blizzard) listen to their fan base like this.
Making sure that we can do an update like this successfully is an important step on the road to doing even larger scale content and systems additions in the not-too-distant future.
Our team will be right here while this first update is going on. We’ll be checking out the servers alongside you, and will be here to respond to any surprise issues that do occur.
We also have a lot more in development than the first look you’ll be seeing tomorrow.
On top of ongoing new content and large feature development, many of which you’ll be hearing about on our site and others, there are some other, smaller improvements we’re working toward – I wanted to call these out specifically since they’re pretty frequently commented on.
• Mages. Yes, we’re both listening to you and paying attention to the post-launch gameplay data on our servers. While a well-played mage does do extremely well, and mages are very well represented in the overall number of active characters, there are issues with competitiveness in some low and mid level ranges and certain combinations of souls, due largely to mages’ overall fragility and cast times.
• Mail Spam. Chat spam protection has been going really well on the whole, which, predictably, pushed spammers into mail. We’ll be putting more protection in place there soon.
• Event Contribution. This system is being reworked to be more in line with the idea of events being massively social occurrences, and the focus on abilities themselves will be going away entirely.
• Anti-Hacker Protection. As a very high priority, we’re working on new and interesting ways to help you make sure your account is protected from password phishing and keyloggers. In the short time since head start, we’ve already banned a couple thousand spammers, hackers, farmers, and thieves. We’ll continue improving our detection and ability to take action on them well into the future.
• Dismount and Exposed. Expect some changes here as well.

Nice and FAST move
I play Mage and i´m pretty much happy with it,not having much problems regarding fragility... at least not with a necro, since pets can tank pretty well.
I must agree though casting times are waaaay too long. Nice to hear they are fixing that^^
One imagines how people can be blindly lead like this.
Rift == WoW with mature graphics....that's IT. There's nothing new, it's as easy as WoW, and has no end game point other than raiding.
Congratulations, you've found WoW 2.0, it's not the new "Big Hit" MMO. {mod edit} Pathic >:(, here's hoping some indie company comes up with something good. Maybe we'll be surprised and Mythic announces DAOC 2 around Q4. Or.....ArcheAge brings us out of this "Dark Age" of horrible copycats of WoW.
/sigh

BS. WoW's class system is so pathetically simplistic and inflexible it hurts just to contemplate and the company actually engages in customer service. Although you're right about the graphics being better.

That lead producer managed to summarize almost every single minor little complaint in 5 bullet points. That is close to 2 weeks worth of qq on the forums in 5 bullet points they said they are already working on fixing.
This is the kind of stuff I expect from Blizzard in their prime. Back when it was just hardcore one raid after another that was just amazing and they answered every question. Trion is seriously making sure this MMO is solid from launch.
The direction is completely different on end game. In Rift when Guilds finish bosses they are buffing them to make it more challenging.
I think they are starting to set themselves apart from one thing I noticed. They have basically in the past 3 days unleashed their staff on the forums.

Agreed actually. The customization of the classes is Rifts main advantage together with good coding.
If they now just could add a few more classes, 4 is a bit limited... 2 more would help.

Nice to hear they are fixing that^^
Same here. They're actually engaging in real customer service, which up until now has been a totally foreign concept to MMO companies.
Agreed actually. The customization of the classes is Rifts main advantage together with good coding.
If they now just could add a few more classes, 4 is a bit limited... 2 more would help.
