If its a fantasy game, sell it as fantasy.

Yeah, and if it is a cyberpunk game, sell it as cyberpunk.

Saying that the cyberpunk genre isn't marketable because it isn't well known is selling yourself short and cutting out a a piece of the market that is there whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.  Cyberpunk 2020 and Shadowrun are both 20+ year old RPG IPs that still have still have strong followings, moreso Shadowrun which has spawned novels and 4 video game titles set in the Shadowrun universe.  How can it be suggested that marketing for a cyberpunk product cannott happen when others have done it in the past?

Pardon if this has all ready been answered, I will finish reading this post tonight.

What is the diff between "Fantasy" and "Midevil Fantasy"?  May be if your poll included a sentence or two giving examples. Aren't "Futuristic" and "Sci-Fi" the same thing?  Was one of those ment to include "Steam Punk"?  As for "Post-Apoc", "Horror",  and "Vampires/Warewolfs" these are also cross overs.  "Post-Apoc" is a type of "Sci-Fi".  Some may say (including I) that "Vampires/Warewolfs" are a type of "Horror" and both are a genre of "Fantasy".

The endevor is praise worthy, I wish you luck with your experiment.

    Go Sci-Fi.

    Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven
Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.
As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

The problem with indie companies is that the game are usually crap. Good ideas, just crap for execution. That is why we are taking the reins on this so to speak. We all want to make a name for ourselves in the industry and we cant do that if we are all facing the same direction.

It is sad but true, most Indie games are not that good due to lack of resources. It's unfortunate and I hope the industry starts providing more middleware that makes game development by small studios more of a reality so we can see those brilliant, but unrealized, ideas bear fruit.

I'm glad to hear that you have that kind of backing behind you, that's encouraging. So you can really run with it and bring something fresh and exciting to the genre. I'll check back in 5 years from now, heh ;>

lol no worries Anna, in 5 years we will be here.

I voted futuristic, im surprised to see so many votes for fantasy when theres literally 1000s of fantasy mmo's already in existance.

Plus a futuristic theme leaves a lot of room since the future is always ahead. :p

What we really need is an mmo with a mix of all themes, western, sci-fi, fantasy, all in one.

    Do some research.

Brad McQuaid is an industry figure that everyone should be familiar with, especially if you want to learn how not to release a 30+ million broken turn of an MMO or how to drive a company into the ground.

I am not saying that it cant be done, or that it hasnt been done Shoju, all im saying is that people (the majority of people) dont know what a cyberpunk game is, and will not even try it because its called cyberpunk. The first thing that comes to mind of people who dont know what it is a bunch of goth kids riding around in trench coats and skate boards. Selling a cyberpunk game as fantasy will allow a much larger market of players to join, without knowing its cyberpunk driven. You know?

I agree a mix would be fun, but very confusing at the same time :p I am also surprised to see how many people have voted for Fantasy.

I dont think itd be confusing, i dont mean have the storyline based on all themes but... The way i can describe it is the world has countries and each country has its own theme, language, culture kinda thing but we all live on the same rock.

Id really love to see a good mix of themes but not in seperate zones you know? Sci-fi, fantasy, western and whatever in the same place.

I cast my vote for dieselpunk and/or atomicpunk, a subgenre in the sci-fi category.  Love the aesthetic and it isn't known well enough to become cliche yet.

All men think they're fascinating. In my case, it's justified

    No, I obviously don't know.

And I really don't know how you ever came to the thought processes that would associate cyberpunk with goth skateboarders.  That is more than a little mind boggling.  Besides, isn't it the job of your marketing staff to make people aware of what your product is instead of relying on a somewhat over done medium (fantasy) just to make it easier for consumers to identify your product genre?

The MMO market is saturated with fantasy MMOs, and given that a lot of them are branded as 'WOW clones' and do very little to differentiate themselves from each other, does adding one more to the list really do the industry any favors, especially when many are crying out for something different.

He's more than likely saying that people don't know what cyberpunk is.  At first glance, it sounds like computer junkies that ride their skateboards or bikes and put black saran wrap on their hair.  To some, this may not be as pretty of an image than fantasy's "Creatures and swords."

You can replace cyber in cyberpunk with any other word and it will sound nearly the same.  Calendarpunk, televisionpunk, recyclepunk, pepsipunk.  The image in my head is the same dude with only a different advertisement button on his black coat.

Voted horror.  Would love to see an mmo with the atmospheric pressure as the 1992 movie "Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'."

Seriously?  Cyberpunk?  A genre that has been around since the early 80s; inspired novels, movies, anime, roleplaying games, computer games, comics, trading card games and the best a couple of people can come up with is that it makes them think of dudes on skateboards.

Someone give me a red pill please.

It's the "punk" part of the word.

Whether you want to believe it or not, some people are ignorant to some things!  Somewhere someone doesn't even know what a Massively Multiplayer Online game is at all, just like you may not know where to dig for dinosaur fossils, or how to remove a heart and replace it with someone else's, or how to quickly apply for msi packages from Adobe.  I'm 100% sure many people around here haven't even heard of cyberpunk.  First time I heard steampunk I thought it was bullies on the Steam gaming platform, but then again I have other things to worry about like bills and health and drumming and how to get around being shot down by the better looking of the two girls.

I don't know what the red pill does, so your insult was confusing.

Is it that hard to educate someone what cyberpunk is AND advertise it? I don't think it is. An image of something other than a goth skater may be in the right direction. Its true, though, some may be out of the loop of what things are but its not hard to inform.

I would really prefer a historical game. There are so many periods that would work great. War of the roses, American war of indepedence, a French musketeer MMO, Europe in the 10th century, Japan during the shogunate and many more. No more pirates thankyou.

A cyberpunk game would also be great. :)

I dont like how the OP seems to be handling this poll at all...

Constant disregard to specific genres, mixing in first person shooter/third person shooter in the list...

Ok I mean seriously...You can make a first person fantasy game (elder scrolls) a first person post apocalyptic game (fallen earth o.O) a third person sci fi (global agenda, firefall, s4 league) and things like that...

Cyberpunk = matrix, Star Ocean Till the end of time (Even if its highly mixed with fantasy), Ghost in the shell series, Deus Ex, Half Life 2, Shin Megami Tensei

"If you don't know what cyberpunk is, it's basically a set of common themes and styles that usually involves dystopian futures, grim urban settings, totalitarian regimes, hacking and/or aliens and guys in shades and black trench coats."

Steampunk = Full metal alchemist, arcanum, Final fantasy 9(I think..Its been ages since I played), Wild Arms games, Final fantasy 6, Dark Cloud 2, Legend of Mana for the ps1,

You dont have to describe them..You dont see rift ads saying its a fantasy game o.O It says "Were not in azeroth anymore"

So I dont see a problem that the OP is seeing  o.O

    Edit :

Also Im not sure if you noticed but Warcraft and World of Warcraft is steampunk ish(very little but its still in there!).  They just decided to focus on the more fantasy side o.O Srsly...Whats the problem with something having a more steampunk art style and setting? Or cyberpunk for that matter?

Better yet if you want a better description of steampunk, I remember the goblin and gnome outpost in TBC were very steampunk.  I expect the goblin starting zone to be very steampunk as well.  Umm...So is that goblin (i think they were goblins) place in the thousand needles o.O

    Edit 2 :

You dont have to use the word steampunk on the ads srsly.  90% of these just show trailers and things like that not with a huge sign "The world of Steampunkcraft" o.O

The red pill thing was him saying that The Matrix = cyberpunk btw o.o

How many  people know that FMA is a steampunk world?  Not a lot o.O  but do they like the story and the setting? maybe they do maybe they dont o.O  Srsly...Now Im getting confused since I didnt really read the OP and I assumed he meant the setting of the game o.O

OP gives us 3 polls where we can vote from a number of well-established (not to say beaten to death) options.

Thread-title should therefore be: "An old MMO-copy is born here!".
