You asked this question here? Dude, I could have told you all of the answers you'd get on both sides.
And I agree with the person who said we'd have to read your mind to know.
As for me, I like Rift. A lot. And that's coming from someone who is really, really sick of WoW and who also said I'd never pay another monthly sub again. But despite what a lot of people say about Rift being just like WoW - I love Rift. I'm sick of WoW. Evidently there are some differences.
That all said. Rift is light on content. If you are a 4+ hour per day kind of player then you might get bored in a month. If you are a 5 to 15 hour per week player then I don't see why you'd get bored unless you just have mmo burnout in general.
Final comment: I find it VERY telling that Rift is number 2 on the hype meter right here at mmorpg.com behind Guild Wars 2. Atlantica has owned the hype meter for at least 2 years in terms of released games, and released games are rarely seen in the top 10, let alone number 2. Rift is a month old and is hanging on to number 2. I've never seen that before.
So a lot of people think it's worth it. I have no idea if you will or not.

Right? I only had to respec one of my characters and it wasn't a big deal. My others were untouched. I need to take a closer look at what exactly was changed about those souls, but it seems to be a small minority of unhappy people screaming very, very loudly.
I was pleasantly surprised when I went from Apprentice to full 5 star Elite in under 2 months. I was pleasantly surprised again when I went from Elite to just barely Hardcore in 2 weeks. Apprentice, here I come!

Can you tell me how to look for votes? I'm curious as to the number of votes that DC Universe or Earthrise have due to their plumets on the list at launch. Regardless - 400 votes or not I still have never seen a game stay so high after release. And I check the list fairly frequently.

I want to know is this a game I will be playing for months on end or will I end up dumping it like yesterday's trash? I've had too many bad MMO experiences bred from substantial hype, I must know if this game is genuinely good as they say it is. Should I buy this game and is it worth it?
The only person thats going to be able to answer that question is you. No one on this forum knows you or who you are or what you like and dont like. Its not up to a bunch of forum trolls to tell you what to or not to do.
Ok, so that info actually plays to my point quite nicely. You have to go back to September of 2009 to find a game (Aion) that has more votes than Rift. So of all of the games released in 2010 and 2011 Rift has received the most votes and by far the highest overall rating. Pretty doggone impressive.

I'd have to agree with others in that it depends on your MMO background and what you find fun. I personally thought RIFT was a waste of money and grew bored with it in a week and a half. Your mileage will vary.
Just ask yourself this. Does solo questing, doing BG's, group dungeons (instances, and raiding for gear appeal to you? If not, this game isn't going to hold your interest after the newness wares off. Sure, there are RIFTs that can sometimes spice things up, but they get old real fast. I'm also assuming you'll be rifting, questing, pvping, and grouping equally to prolong getting burnt out on the game. I did all equally and still burnt out within two weeks.

The reason Rift's rating is so high is because there are so few votes. The rating is useless until it gets enough votes to compare to other games.

I think I stated that it has more votes than any release since September of 2009. If the average 1 year old release had 1000 votes, then 414 would not be enough. The average 1 year old release, though, has anywhere between "not enough to track" and 300. There are no other 1 year old releases that have 400 votes. This indicates that Rift has a large following and that it is an abnormally positive player base.
Perhaps one could argue that a game needs to be out for a few months before the ratings actually mean anything but that's a different argument. The fact remains that Rift is tracking exceedingly well here at mmorpg.com.

those who hate it are going to hate it, but if nothing else, this shows that there are plenty of people out there who think it's a great game. Try it out and decide for yourself.
I've been a big supporter of the game and loved most of the first month.
However, at this point, I wouldn't recommend it to most people and canceled myself.
It's an ok MMORPG. It had plusses and minuses all along, it was never perfect.
For me, what made it playable were the rifts and the Soul Sytem, with the freedom of character design the latter offered.
The problem is, it appears trion is surprised by a.) How fast people could hit the cap and blow through the existing two Tiers of end game progression b.) They finally realized how hard it would be to actually balance a class system that allowed characters of each Calling to handle in game roles usually reserved for other classes in most other games.
They are now systematically "balancing" most builds that play against the established norm out of the game. They are also doing all sorts of things to try to slow down player advancement. One primary target for balancing has been any builds that allowed for minimal downtime. I can say that testing some Warrior builds tonight, I wasn't too happy for the nostalgic feeling I received of MMOPRGing from a decade ago, when games used to force us to sit and drink/eat after every single fight. Not fun.
For anyone on the fence, I'd say "wait for the dust to settle". Trion seems to either be in over it's head, or they've been so spooked by the rapid player progression that they don't care how much the hurt the overall play experience, as long as they can slow everything down.
I guess it's good that most MMO developers now know to put together a game that at least looks and plays good at launch and for the first month of Live. Too bad most don't do enough to ensure the game actually holds up under extended exposure to the masses.
BTW, yeah, Rifts were a selling point as well, but I have to admit they are already getting old. They've done an ok job of incentivizing participation, but by level 30, you out-level any rewards a lot sooner than you can earn the currency to buy the good stuff. (That's even if you make Rifting a priority). So, don't buy the game for the Rifts, or because you want freedom to design your own class or because it looks like a top notch example of current gen games. The game is "just not all that" and it's cracks are already showing, big time.

Those 2 have stayed at the top with the amount of votes they have. Until Rift gets enough to compare to either of those the rating is kind of useless.
GW was released in 2005 and Atlantica released in 2008. I give HUGE props to those games for being as highly rated as they are after a long period of time, especially Atlantica which is the youngest of the 1000 vote club and the only f2p game that has received 1000 votes.
I went back and did some homework and found 18 games that have received more than 1000 votes. I'd list them but you could probably name most of them anyway. Atlantica is the youngest game on the list and it is 2 years and 5 months old. So you can't compare Rift's 400 votes to those games. You can easily say, "Yes, but let's see how Rift is doing in 2 years, or 5 years." But to properly compare Rift's numbers you need to look at more recent releases. None of the recent releases have as many votes. Some in 2009 do and a few in 2008 and those are not getting as high a rating - and most completely tank in ratings after launch. That speaks volumes for Rift. Will Rift have 1300 votes in 2 years? Probably. Will it be rated higher than Atlantica at that time? Who knows. But to invalidate Rift which has garnered more votes in a month than any other game has received over the past year simply because it doesn't have as many votes as games that are 2 or more years old doesn't make a lot of sense.
And if we are asking the question as to whether Rift will still compare in 2 years then we're completely off topic. The OP wants to know if he should buy the game today.
I was pleasantly surprised when I went from Apprentice to full 5 star Elite in under 2 months. I was pleasantly surprised again when I went from Elite to just barely Hardcore in 2 weeks. Apprentice, here I come!
The game is fun for about 30 days. So to me it was worth the price I paid for it. But. alas, I am now max level and bored to tears with it. Max level you say, burned past all the content you say. Ha! I say. Its not hard. And thus, a casual gamer in this genre has done so.
Same here. Max level, did quite a lot ingame, all it took me was 1 month of casual play. If you're in for a short and linear leveling curve followed by waiting in a city for the next warfront to pop or spamming chat for the next instance group to form (because you have no Looking for Group tool, which is a blasphemy imo for a 2011 game) go ahead.
I had fun for a month, i admit it. But instead of turning towards the dynamic content and stuff, the game just became a WoW clone: instances, battlegrounds, reputation, blah.
The Rift fad and the rabid fanbois will go in the recycle bin where they belong in 3 months or so.
For a long story, Fiontar hit the nail on the head perfectly.
It looks bland kinda, If u are after somathing that looks awsome and make u block and break out of holds and use keys to get big attacks I'd go for DC Universe online any day over rift. Sure its based on comics but it has a skill level way above playing rift which brings in a big element of fun. IE u can maco 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 an play rift for days. Or really pay attention to whats happening and play DC Universe online in world thats fast paced. In DC you can level up in 2-4 days easy but that when duos 4mans and raiding really starts. Also check out need for speed world its ftp and mad fun for short time.

I wouldnt know for one I didnt do pvp where most people cry classes are op but how can they be op when both sides have the same builds against each other. It took me days if not over a week to finaly get a couple of builds I liked and in 1 patch they are unplayable.

That sucks. Sorry that happened. My characters were pretty much untouched and I they seem to me to be pretty powerful. Had one of my characters become an unplayable character that would not be too fun.

Gotta say I tried the last two Beta's and hated it. Went back to EQ2 with wife who promptly got her account hacked. Little help from SOE so went back to try Rift again. So glad we did, having a blast. Don't have a lot of time available so don't get burnt out but love rift chasing, quests although very familiar are a bit more adventurous than some. ROFL at trying to sow and grow plants to find the rabbits eating them....... then blew em' up with saboteurs bombs... hehe what a fun class. At the end of the day it costs £24 from Game and that is cheap entertainment for a month. Theres only one way to find out if you like something+try it.

How in the heck are any of us who do not know you going to be able to answer this question? Sorry to be pedantic but you are asking us to decide HOW YOU WILL FEEL about this game. Not being you that is just not possible.

thank you for making more clear the image of rift for me ..i tried closed beta and then i tried open beta but this game make me feel like i already play it for years...not a good feeling for a new mmo i dont know if i will buy it or not im not a hater but still not the game that will make me also drink and eat infront of my monitor enjoying the game.... back to waiting then for the next mmo and keeping the hope alive! i envy the people who can enjoy this game my time will come again also
If you've got the money to spend, why not give it a try? Worst thing that will happen is after the free month you'll quit. I play it casually and I can say I enjoy the game. The dev team actually listens to the community and Trion doesn't try to squeeze every cent out of you by using gimicks like an authenticator.

It's got its quirks; things that need major tweaking or fixing, but it's worth it.

"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
thank you for making more clear the image of rift for me ..i tried closed beta and then i tried open beta but this game make me feel like i already play it for years...not a good feeling for a new mmo i dont know if i will buy it or not im not a hater but still not the game that will make me also drink and eat infront of my monitor enjoying the game.... back to waiting then for the next mmo and keeping the hope alive! i envy the people who can enjoy this game my time will come again also
If you've got the money to spend, why not give it a try? Worst thing that will happen is after the free month you'll quit. I play it casually and I can say I enjoy the game. The dev team actually listens to the community and Trion doesn't try to squeeze every cent out of you by using gimicks like an authenticator.
Not even that. Just grab a test code and sample for yourself.
