Okay well I am thinking about buying SWG when the complete set comes out on the 6th, however I want to personally know whats so good about this game and whats bad about the game... I heard lag is a problem on SWG... But its STAR WARS... I've played tons of MMO's such as Meridian 59, Ultima Online, Everquest, City of Heroes, Guild Wars, etc... and I believe I tried a trial of SWG when gamespy was doing some sort of promotion with it... I played the trial for an hour or 2 and then quit because there was something about it I didn't quite like. I am sure I will have to learn more about it and get more involved in it to enjoy it more but please, comment on good and bad things about SWG!

very specific character creation, no real storyline that u have to do...
u explore the content in the game as u feel like
neg: nowadays u need to get your combat professions up asap before u go exploring certain planets
From experience .. lag is 90 % client side. If you have a good PC and especially 1 gig RAM you should have only minimal problems (and that rarely).
The good things ... very very much freedom to create your character as you want it (look, skills, professions). And the freedom to change it over time. You dont have to commit to be a single profession or career for the rest of your online life ... or see 30 clones of your own toon when you visit an NPC city. The game world is HUGE, the variety is immense.
Bad things ... = SOE. Mediocre customer support and bug-fixing. Bad management. Marketing department always dominates over coder developer team, which leads to rushed patch jobs.
Have fun

I'll post in this thread to keep from having to create yet another similar thread topic--besides, my question is related to this topic (thinking of getting SWG as well)...
ANYWAY, my question is...how much is there to do in SWG? I don't necessarily have all the time in the world to play these games, and it would be good to know that there is a fair amount content to be occupied with besides level grinding. (NOTE: I ask this because although I have heard that Rage of the Wookies offers up a whole lot of adventure content, the other planets are pretty barren--it's what I've heard ).
Also, where does SWG fit in the whole Star Wars storyline? Does it, or is it kind of a mishmash of all the cool aspects of Star Wars, with no need to explain any odd details (like the number of Jedi characters)?
Thanks for your time
Stay away from this lag and bug infested game. ANd do not think Customer Support will help you either. I sent a ticket into CS and they told me to e mail support. Support then told me to send a ticket in.
This game is generic, pathetic and crappy, not a TRUE Star Wars game.
And definitly not worth $15 a month
Now for questions, there is not much to do but do missions and take quests. It gets boring.
As far as where SWG fits in?? No one really knows anymore because it started out in between episode 4 and 5 but they have basically done what any good ole fashion evil Corporation would do and rolled it back it seems so you can do stuff 30 years earlier like you are apart of episode 3, its really stupid.
As someone who is NOT trying to drive away new players, let me answer, Darq.
Their are many, many quests from many many NPCs in each town, some depending on your faction standing. Their are also mission terminals for every proffession and even exploration to do. Most of these missions are inconsequential and dont CHANGE the story, but you do get some nice story nuggets...such as, I just did an entertainer series of missions and found out some good info about how Jabba is using the Tuskens to attack Mos Eisley, thereby pressuring the mayor to do whatever he says.
Let me add to this that many times, I'm so busy with goals that I've set myself (crafting or otherwise) that I rarely have time or want to do missions. Its not really a mission OR grind driven game...its a goal based game, at least for me.
As far as storyline, it takes place shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star.
Drive away? or warn??
dont get this game, all the "quests" are nothing more than "drive to point X and kill creatue Y, then return" im not even kidding you, every single quest is like that. combat is the same thing over and over, and after the first week of the "OH MAN THIS IS STAR WARS AWESOME!" feeling, it will wear off, and you will wonder why you are playing this sorry excuse for a game.
If you want to knock SWG there are bad things you can honestly say about the game, but nothing to do?
I have been playing a week and only have 1 character. So far I have gone sightseeing places from the movies using ground vehicles, completed missions, fought mobs on the ground with weapons and unarmed, fought in space in my own fighter, bought and sold in auctions, played with my pet, played with my droid, repaired my starfighter, joined others on a multi-passanger starship, mined for ore, built machines, gambled in a night club, played a musical instrument in front of a crowd, harvested items from animals and have started to build my next ship. Besides a quick parts run to Naboo, I have not even left sight of Tattoine yet. That's not even all there is to do, just what I was able to fit into the first week
What other MMORPG could you do that much stuff with a single character so quickly? No, this is not a perfect game and SOE is far from a perfect company, but if you can't find something to do I don't think your looking.
If you want your content spoon fed, play WoW (which is one of the advantages of WoW and why it attracted so many players). I like that about WoW, but it also means this game wont keep me interested as long as SWG.
In SWG there is a TON of quests (especially since the Rage of the Wookiee expansion), but on the 10 standard planets they are harder to find if you are not familiar with the game (because the planets are so huge). The new RotW quests are also more interesting, often multi-part, multi-planet and ground/space mix quests.
IMHO there is a LOT to do in SGW ... after almost 2 years of gaming whenever I log in I have 3-4 things on my to do list and could spend HOURS more with other things. Many of the things come from the interaction with other players, especially my guild. For me SWG is more interactive than WoW. And you have many more options to create your own player events and fill SWG with content yourself.
I strongly suggest you try it and will gladly help you get started,
Have fun

Now check out ellerions post. First he says if you want content go to WOW.
SWG will throw quests here and there but basically once you do them (and have found a big enough party to survive) you have nothing left.
The way to survive in this game fromt he boredom is to either start a guild and try to get a Player City going and find a TON of quality players. My guild rejected a ton of people into our city and Guild in game because we really wanted quality over quanity.
I would suggest to leave this game be and get CIty of Heroes or WoW. But if you get this game, FIND people to play this game with to help you survive, understand it, and keep it enjoyable.
Unbiassed opinion. Personally I don't like SOE at all
SWG is the best MMO on the market
Why:
I played UO for 2 years straight then on/off until last year. I played EQ for 2 years straight then on/off as I tried other games till last year. Last year I picked up SWG. I only took a break from it to try out WOW BETA and came right back in terror of that craptastic game then tried EQ2 and was equally dissapointed and came back.
Today, IMO, SWG is the single best and most varied MMO on the market. It's easily the most fun, hands down. It's the only one that I have found that certain special 'something' that both UO and EQ had in their prime. Whatever that 'something' is that makes you keep coming back to a game SWG definitely has it. It's also got one of the best graphics engines available right now if you've got the rig to run it tweaked out. It's better than EQ2 and WOW in many ways even though both of those are much newer games.
I'm not a fanboi, I agree that there are MANY gameplay bugs that need to be fixed Post CU but I have faith that they'll get them fixed. I've been playing MMO's so long that bugs bother me but I try not to judge based on them unless a given game company has given me reason to think they won't fix bugs. SOE has never given me real reason to think they'll ignore bugs any more than any other company out there. Sure the haters will tell you that bugs never get fixed (they told everyone the same thing about EQ). And yeah, the haters will say things like "SWG will be gone in 1/2/3 years" Guess what, the haters 2 years ago said the same thing about SWG then. "It'll be gone next year". Matter of fact the Haters of UO said it would be gone 7 years ago... it's still out there with hundreds of thousands of players (go fig). Haters of EQ said it would die when AC came out, then when DAOC came out then when AO came out then when E&B and EVE came out.... it's still out there... with over 400,000 subscriptions.
SWG is, and will continue to, doing just fine. New players are out in droves right now. I do hope SWG fixes the current crop of CU related bugs asap so that those new players can experience the joy I have without the most annoying bugs I've seen to date. But I will continue to play untill the game isn't FUN anymore. Right now I don't see any other games, past, present or any on the current horizon, that are in any way going to change the fact that, for me, SWG is the most fun game on the market.
Anyway... it's a great game. If it's your cup of tea you'll really like it. Some folks don't like it though so I guess the old saying is true:
Some people will like it
Some people won't.
If you REALLY want to know whether you'll like it or not? Try it. Decide for yourself.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
Quests SUCK in every game period. Questing doesnt matter... having fun while you explore planets and fighting great looking creatures is what is fun to me. WoW quests are all repetative and boring, EQ2, DaoC ect. SWG was the best pve ive been in yet because it is so expansive. If you get bored of one planet you can go to many others. Not only that but you can explore entire planets and discover things many people havent seen.
I went to dathomir with a brand new character and found a large temple guarded by Preyamantis type guardians. I never found out what it was. I could have been a jedi temple, but it had several containers guarded by a huge Queen.
I have never had so much fun in pve as i did in SWG. I never got into pvp all that much though, but i did go on some raids against player cities. This was all when SWG was first released and im sure the game has gotten many times better by now.
I do enjoy the space combat a lot, being a Xwing Vs Tie Fighter fan. It feels just like it and looks great. The crafting in this game was better than any MMO to date as well. You can build ships, resource harvesters, houses ect. I don't know any other game ive palyed that can do that.
oh yea mounts can be used at any level and are far better than WoW... they can do tricks and they can be massive or as small as they are in the wild. Creature handlers are a hel of a lot better than hunters in any MMO out there as well. Pets are great, in WoW a pet might be a little squirrel or a poor looking parrot. Rancors, fambaa ect are massive and can be great fun to play around with or to have hunt with you.
I certinaly have my gripes about SWG but ithink it's fair to compare this to all the toher games out there. Most of my gripes (except bug issues) have been fixed or implimented into the game. When i first played ialways wished they had better factional bonuses, armors, weapons, and rewards. Now they do have all that and more than i probably know.
Only reason im not playing SWG now is i don't ahve the ram or Processor to play it that well. Ive palyed all the MMO's out there at soem point and SWG has been my most memorable one along side DAoC.
I've hated SWG before, stil ldo in some ways BUT when i compare the features of SWG to any other... no other game has what SWG has in terms of qualitiy and depth. If the bugs were fixed this would be a far better game than it is right now.
Elnator i agree totally btw.
Thanks for all the responses everyone. I probably will end up trying SWG once my current game sub ends and find out for myself.
Thanks again
It's like any other MMO, you can't really be sure you like it until you suck and see
Be sure though to check out some of the smaller servers like Valcyn. They really need more players and as they are small, they have great communities of players. Also check out the forums on a regular basis to keep in touch with what is happening on the server you play on. It's a great way to meet folks, get to know who is who and what is what and are chock full of handy hints and tips on playing the game.
PALADIN
I believe that was teh temple of the blueleaf and it is on Yavin
If you quote me, please try to
a) get my name right
b) dont twist my words and quote them entirely. I said "if you want your content SPOON FED" !
SWG has lots of content, which you have to find yourself - checking them out on a website is a good idea to know where to look.
WoW has lots of content and channels you to content they believe is appropriate for your gaming level. Sometimes with a sledgehammer. Which is a great way to introduce new players to the genre. To the more experienced players this can get annoying after some time and we go anywhere anyway (I visited The Dark Portal about 30 levels before I should be there).
IMHO SWG is the better game in the long run, more challenging and varied. WoW is an excellent short term game for an hour of fun (or five) once in a while.
Have fun

You really need to learn to read and quit acting like you have an agenda. Did Sony Online Entertainment steal your goldfish, kill your dog? Did they say something about your mother or something that you can go on with this one tracked hatred at anything said positive about it and try (poorly I might add) to twist it for your advantage?
I would suggest anger management courses.

There is a fair amount of content. I wouldn't say its ground breaking though. None of it takes long to do unless you decide to go the path of the jedi in which case there is a rediculous amount of stuff to do (they obviously showed where their passion is on this I think). There are the themeparks, there are missions. Missions will get old if you continually grind them more then you have too.
If your looking for EQ II level content darq, I think you will end up dissapointed. However if you get into a roleplay guild and really sink yourself into the star wars universe I don't think you can ever get bored in that game. It has holding power and longevity like UO did to me. UO hardly even knew what a quest was in modern terms, yet there was always something going on or something to do. Even if that meant just going to town to do alittle roleplay or hanging out with friends.
You have to look for it in Star Wars where as with EQ II they pretty much throw it in front of our face on a hook. Kashyyk does really turn the scale of the game however into more of an EQ II type style. I have likes and dislikes about that but its not diminishing my gameplay at all. Unless ofcourse every new planet that ever comes is designed the way Kashyyk is, then I may start to dislike the way SWG is turning because I don't mind looking for my own content and I like the openness of it. It reminds me very much of UO when I started it shortly after it was released.
With the 3 new movies out now the game definetly connects alot of episode 4 thru 6 with episodes 1 thru 3. And there is plenty of storyline stuff in the game to keep it feeling like Star Wars. However considering the era they put it in you don't really get the feel of struggle you get from whatching Episode IV. But I do not have any problem finding myself in the Star Wars universe anyways. It will definately feel like Star Wars too you.
I hope this helps, I don't think there is one real decisive answer here. I beleive wether it is or isn't any of the things you asked is mostly up to you. SWG will be what you make it and what your friends help you make it.

Thanks for the info, Fadeus. Actually, does SWG have any RP servers? I did a little digging and it doesn't seem like it does, although it doesn't make much sense seeing as how both EQ and EQ2 have RP servers. Seems odd that they wouldn't have any in SWG
They have unofficial ones but for some reason Lucas doesn't seem to want to allow any officially declared RP servers. I am not sure why. However if you do alittle searching you should be able to find a list of what servers are listed as what. I think stratics at one point hosted a list that had the unofficial roleplay servers on it. Erillion probably knows as well.
