Disappointed after seeing live stream combat

First off let me just say I am buying the game no matter what.  Gotta get my SW fix. "shakes fist at Lucas"

Now i dont know to much info about the game, and i am doing this purposly.  I want to experience the game as fresh as can be so I try not to read much on the game on purpose.  The only knowlegde i get is limited from the video trailers and some of the vids that come out.

But watching the live stream the combat look incredibly boring.  No dodging, crouching, crawling.  Of course this could have been the guy playing it.  But i was hoping combat would have more animations then what was being shown.  I know i souldnt compare to SWG, but i do remember in that came it was more "action".

Especially after all the 3 videos, they are so action packed, that seeing the in game combat  was disappointing.  I just hope that combat will be better by release.

Another thing in the live stream that I saw I hope they change is companions, having the same companion for each class is bland.  I would have hoped that you could choose your companion, or be able to change at a later time.

Gone are the days of SWG, say hello to the era of WoW clones.

The combat has been looking bland to me.  That last video confirmed it.  I will still try it since 2 of my friends have been going crazy for this game.

This is not an action based game.  It's an RPG, and that's just the way it's supposed to be.

I will grant you that the combat seemed pretty static in the game... and i'm not sure whats going on with why they are just standing there after seeing a video a couple of years ago showing mobs hiding behind cover.

I will note that the IA and smuggler are the only two that can hide behind rocks ala ME style, so thats why you didn't see him doing it. The bounter hunter is a pretty straight forward class.

As for the companions, each class does get the same set of companions, but they get quite a few of them, which can be fully customized...armor wise not physical with gear, plus kits can change what type they are. Plus each class gets a different set of companions to use.

Note: I answered this because it did have some questions about the companions but the E3 thread i think is having this discussion as well.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

You ever thought not all is added yet like animations and you cant judge a game before it is even in beta.

That is like buying a computer then saying it is too slow before even turning it on and trying it.

  • whosaidwhatwhosaidwhat Member Posts: 35

I watched a video sometime back that was a demo and combat was much more animated.  The person playing the live stream said he was playing the actuall game.

And I can beleive that some animations are not in the game, but as the person was describing much of the game was ready.

As for it being a rpg, having a full voiced story still needs to have good combat, especially in a sci fi type game.

The problem with your post is people ARE trying it, there's live demos currently available. And the game isn't exacty in the early stages of development, or did you think they were suddenly going to create monumentous changes in animation and such the day before it's released? It's not far off from being playable and it's still got issues and, FYI, animation is something that takes a lot of time to get right. Unless you expect them to delay the game well over a year, you're not going to be seeing huge changes in the animation between now and release.

Was not really disappointed. Still looking forward to the game the comabt seemed to be the standard mmo style.

People really need to stop expecting massive innovation everytime a new MMO launches. If you want innovation the Nintendo Wii U is thata way.... ------>

People really seem to overlook this fact.  RPG's are about rolling the dice, not action based skill.  That's just the way it is.

As for the Wii U... can you imagine the MMO possibilities?  That controller is perfect for the interface needed to match what we have on the pc!

Actually, I disagree. Setting does not matter. The fact is you are playing an MMO first and foremost regardless if it is space, historical, fantasy, super heroes, etc.... Traditionally MMO's are not known for their combat. usually the combat is more static and focused. Only in more recent memory (COH/V for example) has combat become more reactionary and FPS-lite.

TOR will have standard MMO  type combat. personally I thought it looked fun and exciting and what I would expect. The best combat ever? No, but that is not why I am planning on playing TOR.

I thought it was ok, nothing majorly to be excited about. I think this is a game where it may look boring but once you get in it is really fun. I don't know, I guess since they are Bioware I expected alot more than just a traditional mmo.

The combat is very similiar to WoW's, they've never denied this and they've never claimed it to be anything else.

If you don't like generic MMO combat systems, then you probably won't like SWTOR's combat either. I'm just expecting the rest of the game to make up for it.

Whilan this was kind of my feelings after watching it. I saw previous videos where they did move around, split up, back up, etc.  so I was a little disappointed in this one aspect, but I'm trying to keep things in perspective that Daniel gave me what I wanted to see, more of the world and how big and open it is including an excellent interface. I have a feeling the combat closer to release or in what they show in the near future will be less static.

    There Is Always Hope!

I think the lackluster animation system is to blame.  Attacks themselves could be more interesting, but the real problem is the standing there motionless between attacks.  They should work in some fluid idle animations, to give the feel of constant motion, dodging, parrying, flourishing, whatever, anything but just standing there between cooldowns.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

If you are so disappointed shouldn't you be a good consumer and not get the game?  Isn't that better?

The Giantbomb guys seemed disappointed at what they saw at E3.

Jeff said he got a preview and that it looked just like WoW and you were doing everything you would do in WoW and how he is bored of that and wanted something new.

From the footage I saw the game doesn't excited me, I'm not interested in playing a WoW clone.

What were you expecting? This is a BioWare game. All their games have crappy animation. In fact, I'd go as far to say that that's one of the bigger problems they have with their games. If they just beefed up their animations, their games would seem 10x better.

This game gets a lot of hype considering the crap that it will be. You'll see.

I think he means that your stats determine things like accuracy and damage potential etc., not your ability to target with your mouse, like with FPSs and TPSs. In action games you might have limited impact from stats, but it is mostly about twitch gameplay.

Based on Bioware's track record in combat systems, they did not fail to meet me expectations of the SWTOR combat system...

... My expectations were not that high.

I am only going to say this once people... What level do you think that guy was? Do you think that guy had every ability open to him, think that was that toon at endgame?  Some of you pitchfork & torch people need to take a step back and think before saying anything at all.  Just some free wisdom for you...

its funny that you say that. Bioware has made many rpgs, game after game iterating on their own styles of rpg gameplay.....

and they ditched all that so they could follow a 10+ year old formula for mmo success - a formula that hasnt proven very succesful for most mmo games.

Just because its "mmo" and its "rpg" doesnt mean it needs to play like: /tab to target and then stand there rotating through your skills,  x1000 mobs.

This was a stupid post.  The guy in the video was level 27 and by halfway you generally get a feel for how the combat will be.  Most mobs will die within 10-20 seconds unless their elite and it usually consists of the same rotations.  TOR will have fairly static combat pretty much the same as WoW.  They have the same formula for gameplay and it doesnt matter which skills were available to him as he had enough to show how the combat will be in the end.  But he did say he wasn't familar with that side of the bounty hunter so he was figuring out which skills to use on the fly.  But all in all its pretty much the same as WoW.

I agree. The combat seemed exactly like what we've been doing the past 8 years. No thanks.
