Well you get what you ask for. You make the game cartoony and cater to the younglings then this is what you get. No way of fixing it now. Its a runaway train on the loose....
Thank you btw for proving my point in my previous post with the dealing in absolutes and crystalballing oh and i sense a my game is better then yours going on to but thats just gut feeling. :P
As for younglings? I'd rather deal with kids then some adults. They act more like adults then some adults do :P

You are a scholar and a gentleman, hat's off to ya Maverick.
Hardcore ultra defensive BW/ SW fanbois on one side, taking offense at any percieved slight to 'their' game.
Shiny new game casuals attracted by the Star wars brand that are just there for the lulz and to pretty much troll their way through the experience before they quit at the end of the free play, on the other.
Mixed together in a 90% solo based experience, with very little interdependency or need to 'get on', and given a global chat channel to fight in....
What social tools/ mechanisms can BW introduce to help this potentiol situation?
My guild is Set-up friends are ready to go on release , all channels are ready for disablement guild/local only.
No the community will be fine because it will comprise of just people I know and locals as I will be on a PvE Instance of the game I am in control of who impacts my game.....
Not sure is they have the you can join like 5 guilds at once feature which will allow for communities of friends to build oer time, I think the community will be fantastic because the people who really want to hunt together will do just do that. The game has been designed to leave naysayers pretty much out in the cold.

I am not sure I buy this... You are saying that instead of making steps to build play systems that create community the best thing to do is shut people off from communicating with each other as much as possible?
How does this helpme when I am forced into the 10% of the game that requires me to maybe recruit PUGs, like Flashpoints etc?
That's where the "powerful tools" comes into play. Take a look at DDO - practically no one posts LFG messages in chat because the LFG tool built into the game is so powerful and so useful. People just click on the LFG tool, find a group, and go.
In WoW now, while people still LFG to fill raids, they don't bother when doing 6-man instances because the finder tool is powerful enough (although it has quite a few limitations).
Make a powerful enough flashpoint-finder tool and no one will need to bother with global chat. I would also, however, recommend including the trade-after-bind feature of WoW so that if someone picks up an item accidentally that they can't use, they can give it to someone else in the group (helps to alleviate anger over "improper" rolling).
Last-but-not-least... I like the "luck of the draw" buff from WoW, but I'd like to see a smart-detection feature that grants an unseen skill value to each player based on their performance in groups (it absolutely must be unseen, or there will be problems) and group them with on-skill-level players if possible and modify the overall difficulty of the instance accordingly.
This thread in itself shows what the problem is. Look at the posts by those who are actually following the game, then look at the posts by those who are not.
I don't see the people who are watching TOR making generalized statements. I don't see the people who are following TOR hung up on what graphics the company chose to use. I don't see the people following TOR baiting people over and over again.
I also don't see them hinting that age dictates maturity. I'd rather play with kids than a lot of the posters I see making statements like that. Those are the people I avoid in any game, they're the ones who drag communities down.

Not knowing the truth about the game is par for the course with the hate brigade around here. After three years of distortions and outright lies, you sort of come to expect that. But to not even know the lore of Star Wars and then bash the game based on that ignorance? That's a new one for me.

That's true lol, you know another thing I've noticed lately. TOR hopefuls don't seem in large part to tear down other games just to support TOR. Most I have seen generally look forward to more than just TOR.
I think this basically shows TOR onlookers really don't fear for TOR, they're not worried some other game may give TOR competition. They seem to welcome options in what games they can play, rather than get hung up on one single game.

A lot of valid observations so I painted it all red.
It's what I feel as well; Swtor fans aren't so much lashing out against other games like quite some fans of other anticipated games do. It seems they just feel pretty confident that Bioware will deliver a great and fun game with a lot of compelling content and lasting power.
Maybe that is also a reason which motivates nay-sayers to aggro on Swtor like that; "Big developer owned by EA jumping into the mmorpg genre with huge project, going for a themepark concept, cartoony graphics, unmmorpg-like storylines, space on rails, massive voice overs and companions, all in an effort to dethrone WOW (which I hated with a vengeance already). Not in my hardcore mmorpg gaming corner of the internets!"
Anyway, that might be a bit far fetched but it is a sentiment I often sense with people. Their prejudice (and often lack of information) shuts their eyes for any and all redeeming aspects and turns them into very stubborn bash-bots.

Sorry, but you are wrong in your interpretation of the numbers of Sith and Jedi by a long shot. You might want to go and do a little research about WHY there were so few Jedi and Sith in the "Original Trilogy" and then start expanding outwards from there. Force Sensitive people are in the minority true, but they are by no means:
"The lore always clearly stated that there were only two sith's in the universe at one time. One master and one apprentice. Never more, never less."
I think you are going to find talk about all sorts of wars and such. Anyways, enjoy the reading, it really is pretty good stuff.
Well I guess I don't know much about that "old" era and for a good reason then.
I like the "new" era better, because both Sith and Jedi were close to extinction, giving a sense of mystery and drama.
The idea that practically everyone on the servers will be running around as either a Sith or a Jedi is an instant turn off for me.
It just turns it into a generic Light saber flexing fest. No thanks.
Just keep in mind that what you like IS NOT the whole of it. I personally prefer the era AFTER the original Trilogy when Luke is trying to rebuild the Jedi, but that does not mean that is the ONLY era of Star Wars. Simple fact is this game is built in an era vastly different than the one you are familiar with. Times change. For an example, you would not see many people walking around today carrying a rifle and a belt knife, but only 100 years ago, that would have been fairly common in many parts of the world.
If you don't like this era of Star Wars, well . . . you are welcome to not like it, but BioWare is also welcome to create in it and many of us are looking forward to what this era will bring to the table.

Hehe. Agreed, though personally I am getting tired of trying to convince stubborn people with arguments that just don't seem to sink in. I don't feel as compelled to join discussion anymore. So I'm hoping the game releases soon so it can speak for itself. (Which will herald a new episode of frantic opposers and protagonists here on mmorpg. com as the first reviews and player experiences roll in).
But at least we don't have to mind the people that don't play the game and most important; we don't have to discuss it from this speculative pre-launch perspective anymore.
p.s. No idea where the hell Weasel is. I am guessing / hoping holidays
bit late to the party, but this topic is something ive been worried about for a while.
theres a lot of bickering in most every forum i visit.. so i usually stay quiet. unfortunately i have little doubt some of this will spill over into the game.
I really hope to find a set of people i can mesh with when the game goes live, but i have a feeling ill be doing random groups for a while before i find a place.
You have wow people saying its to much like wow, you have SWG people saying its not enough like SWG, you have people who think if they post on the boards thier ideas should be put into beta asap, As the community has to deal with this shit day in and day out, I have seen we have been a bit bitter to the newer peeps, Search is your friend before you post somthing that we have answerd 2weeks ago. Just take the game for what it is, you either want to play it, or you dont, either way its a fucking game , if it sucks move on to the next one.

You should play Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic, which this game is a sequel to, since you seem to have no idea what the lore behind this game is.
I, for one, don't understand the "cartoony" comments. I've seen leaked screenshots (this morning, in fact), and they look about as realistic as the EQ/SWG graphics. This game is definitely NOT Warcraft-level cartoony.

For what i have seen in videos i would say it's how WOW would look if it was made today. It's a notch above WOW, in the same style.
Don't take me wrong, what WOW artists did was something amazing, so the same can be said about SWTOR artists. It's an art style that will age well.

But at least we don't have to mind the people that don't play the game and most important; we don't have to discuss it from this speculative pre-launch perspective anymore.
p.s. No idea where the hell Weasel is. I am guessing / hoping holidays
My brand new bloggity blog.
bit late to the party, but this topic is something ive been worried about for a while.
theres a lot of bickering in most every forum i visit.. so i usually stay quiet. unfortunately i have little doubt some of this will spill over into the game.
What does that have to do with Roleplaying?
I rather deal with these so called annoying RP'ers than annoying L337 kiddies bunny hopping around everywhere with their lightsabers.
For what i have seen in videos i would say it's how WOW would look if it was made today. It's a notch above WOW, in the same style.
Don't take me wrong, what WOW artists did was something amazing, so the same can be said about SWTOR artists. It's an art style that will age well.
An honest review of SW:TOR 6/10 (Danny Wojcicki)
