Rift: The Future of Rift: A Q&A With Scott Hartsman

Managing Editor Bill Murphy sat in on a telephone press conference with Executive Producer of Trion's flagship title Rift, Scott Hartsman. An upcoming Producer's Letter, set to be hosted on the game's official forums, was the main topic of discussion as Bill and a conference call of his peers addressed with Scott some of Rift's plans moving forward.

There are all sorts of new additions to Rift coming: from new world PvP initiatives in the form of PvP Rifts, plus solo and duo content in the form of Chronicles of Telara Instances. There’s even going to be a form of endgame character advancement so that you can keep growing and earning experience and character skills after level 50 (Alternative Advancement!). And there’s just so much more. The overarching topic of the call was all about what’s next for the game and the list is a long one. Scott and the rest of the crew at Trion have a lot of plans for Rift and they’re quite aggressive and open in sharing them.

It's nice to hear Hartsman admit that they never expected people to keep just doing rift after rift after rift.  Dude's got a good head on his shoulders.

That was the big problem in WAR, and since they took some folk from there, I would hope they had figured that out.  As soon as the main wave of levelers got through an area, no one would bother with the world quests.  It was obvious the same thing would happen in Rift.

This gives me hope again for the future of Rift.

I don't think he gave a single straight answer..

this was something that came up in CB, i'm really glad to hear they've been thinking this through. might even pop back ingame to see what's going on.

This just got me to come back for the free week. Sounds great. I never disliked RIFT at all, it just hit a hard period for me with time constraints.

Sadly no questions or answers on the topic of crafting in rift. A system that was originially described as "robust" by a dev was simply a WoW clone and never got any better since release.

post -50 exp to aug abilities like AA, i'm on board.  i hate being gear dependant when my magic dice always rolls a 13 on what i could use.

Lots of talk and vision, coming Soon(tm) and stuff.  I get the impression this is all new, a reaction to the game's launch.  So where's all the content they had "ready" when they launched, which was going to amaze and be like nothing ever seen before?  Pfffft.

I can't get too snarky at SH, he's better than most of his peers at the cheerleading along with actual leading, and I think they will deliver on what he's talking about eventually.  But you can swap out Rift and swap in Everquest II, and the answers still work.  Someone learned well from the SOE PR machine, and that's not a positive vibe in my book.

AA's might get a nice boost to return players.  Im sick of gear grinding, and wrote them a 2 paragraph letter describing what it would take to get me and my guild to return.

whatever they do, they had better do it before swtor and gw2 come out. Otherwise alot of people wont notice and wont care. New-and-shiny trumps "coming soon".

    Cross-server dungeons =ick..

And still for me the main problem was the small and linear world.

That was a barrage of questions... Everything they talked about? I don't think the game could see it all for 2 to 3 years.

I didn't make it past 2 months playing the game.. but hey that's just me. Good to hear that they are doing a lot of forward thinking now. Game was ok, company seems right on, which is good news for any future projects they work on.

Still playing and I expect them to deliver on everything within the first year. They have delivered on content hands down so far. No game has put as much raid content as Trion in the first 6 months.

I think the future of many RIFT players is SW:TOR. Not even trolling, this is what I read people talk about at open beta, etc, launch of RIFT. After playing RIFT for 3 or 4 weeks, I definitely decided on following suit. Good luck RIFT, because when SW:TOR comes out...yea...

SW:tor looks like crap and will cater to the kiddies that really miss their wow.

    And rift isnt lol.

All games are made dumbed down for the kiddies thx to WoW.

There are no true PvP MMO's that take any kind of skill anymore.

You can argue AoC but truly it wasnt skill based.

MMO's of new are failures compared to the predecessors they have follwed.

LOL and rift isnt like that

Because this isn't a wow clone .. way to have an original thought.

I haven't played in months, and none of this really makes me wanna play. Was a good game, and I am not really sure what doesn't do it for me, but something just got boring as hell about 3 weeks into endgame.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

Well, that may be okay for someone who can play 12 hours a day, but most people have a life (even if it's half a life), job, or some type of other commitment. I personally enjoy PVP games based on skill and thought process. If a player improves his skill / thoughts through countless hours per day of gameplay, well no problem. But if they just have better gear or special skills (soul ranks) because they can game 12 hours a day as Scott is referring to, I'll move on to the next game or keep living my life while I wait for a skill based game.

I so agree here; have all the crafts leveled to 300 plus all the recipes (well some I can not get because you have to be Glorified in all these various reps to get different things to make; hard enough for my 2 50s to get the supplies I need to do a daily crafting quest that does not give you a plaque even when doing 2 dailiy crafting 300 quests a day for 2 weeks.... ugh! Not to mention that in this game, there is no way to really sell your craft to make a profit. No world trade channel... so my crafting in everything is basically worthless.

    but I keep on trying,,,,,
