As you'll be new to SWG you probably won't have the same issues people who played it before the "Combat Upgrade" have. If I were you, I'd just play it. I could rant and rave about it for days on end but that wouldn't matter.I say get it

What exactly do you think they are supposed to be doing? Jumping up and down with a big sign that has the number of subs on it? They HAVE already made statements, as El has said many times, they have about the success TE is. I really don't know what you are trying to get at with this, other then to try to indirectly accuse SOE of falsley reporting their server loads.
What I am getting at: Because SOE did it all the sudden its wrong. If any other company did it, there wouldn't even be notice. I asked you a question and I used CCP as an example (which you refrained from answering).

Ok, although not an advertisement, I did remember the April Fools joke by Blizzard on SOE. This was a crack at SOE implementing the in-game pizza ordering.

LOL won't argue that at all. I've often wondered why SOE hasn't done an official european and asian release for EQ, EQ2, SWG or PlanetSide. Personally when I played EQ I know we ALL wished SOE would put some servers in Asia, if for no reason other than to get the Asian guilds off the servers because the language barrier was causing so many issues, especially in the high-end game. Guilds were at each others throats because the Asian guilds would just go and do things because they didn't understand us when we'd tell them we were planning a raid at XXX location. (Note: I prefer to think it was the language barrier rather than just plain rudeness).
At any rate I have NEVER understood why SOE didn't release a specific Asian Release and a specific European release of their games. It would definitely have increased the number of players they had.

Anyways, sorry if I came off too strong. No hard feelings and I always enjoy reading your posts Ico. I think time will tell how SWG ends up as far as population goes. I am not sure at present time the developers are doing anything to give the players more reason to stay however. The combat system overall I think is better. And now the development team seems to feel everything is peachy now the CU has happenned and they can move on to better things. Like tossing in multi-passanger vehicles right in the middle of the CU instead of fixing the unreal Kimogila in triplicate spawns on Lok, and similar other problems on other planets. They didn't add multi-passenger vehicles because they think everything is hunky dori. Different dev's work on different things, and multi-passenger vehicles got ready to go of their own accord. Thats only partly true. Dev's work where they are assigned. I know, I come from a development enviroment. And if you really beleive none of the dev's that learned enough of the codebase to add multipassenger ability could learn how to fix doctor_imphealing_4 then I think you need to rethink that alittle. That is a real easy way for developers to get out of the hotpan on something and make it ok to keep putting out new content twice as fast as they fix things.
Spouting off? Have you read any of my other millions of countless posts fending off baseless flames about the game? Threads like this are perfectly healthy and I see no flaming going on what-so-ever. Am I the only one who noticed they rolled out an upgrade that Beta polls showed was very unpopular in a game that was almost 2 years old? The CU ( Combat Upgrade ) has to be considered a desperation move unless you conclude the devs are just trying to tank their game. This may seem crazy but there are many who think SWG was doomed from the gate because SOE was trying to design a game that would not threaten EQ.
It doesn't matter why they did it. SWG has a terrible retention value because much more of it is broken than is flawless. Sure, no game is perfect but if more than half your players are mad at you and tens of thousands speak of you with disgust then you to must work for SOE.
Originally posted by reyluryn It doesn't matter why they did it. SWG has a terrible retention value because much more of it is broken than is flawless. --> Wrong statement, not based on in game fact. Exaggeration at the very least. Thats not to say SWG has no bugs, but there are many things in the game that work fine. Sure, no game is perfect but if more than half your players are mad at you --> Pure opinion only and "half your players" number was taken from thin air and is not supported by any facts. and tens of thousands speak of you with disgust then you to must work for SOE. --> Or Blizzard. Tens of thousands speak of WoW in disgust too. Ohh, Everquest too. And Ultima Online. And Ragnarok. And Lineage. And Final Fantasy. Go read some of their forums sometimes. /shrug --> Have fun, Erillion
They just need to scrap this game and sell the rights to a company that cares about playability. SOE hasn't come out with one online game that I have not ended up feeling jaded after playing. All the fun classes in EQ are not appreciated end game. Well it takes years for some to get to end game.. just to realize their char isn't worth spit. That's the very lamest thing ever. So with SWG they tried to change that - so what did they do? Make the game incredibly easy BUT, boring and time sync'ish.
I remember my friend used to say things like "Wow, I can heal myself simply by setting up a camp and waiting 30 mins" - well hell, who wants to sit in front of the computer for 30 mins and watch their char heal? That's gay!!!!!!
I watched him play - my god why don't ya just give me a valume... same result...
He would run up to a creature .. shoot it a few times .. it would die rince repeat..
I don't like games that require 0 skill to play and that sync all your time and leave you with no fun value.
I love star wars, I love good star wars themed games.. this is NOT a good star wars themed game. It's weak.
KOTOR was a great star wars themed game KOTOR2 was crap on a stick.
Race selection...weak...customization..generic...crafting system...very weak...skill system weak...

Um... where are you getting your figures?
"More than half of your players are mad at you".
Please tell me where you saw 125,000 people who are supposedly 'mad' at LucasArts or SOE about SWG? You won't ya know. And that's HALF the current playerbase of the game. Last time I checked only 17,000 players (out of 250,000) signed the petition against the CU. That's less than 10% which means the game has a 10% dissatisfaction rating over the CU. That's pretty darn small for such a large change wouldn't you say?
I 100% agree that the CU was a rush job and should have been more carefully implemented. But the fact of the matter is that it was driven by the expansion pack which I am also 100% certain was a drop-dead "it WILL happen, Make it So" directive from LucasArts. That expansion was timed PERFECTLY to capitalize on EPIII.
Something to remember about message boards: A very, very, very small number of people actually post on message boards as compared to who is playing the game. I remember seeing a statistic once that stated that less than 10% of the population of most MMO's posts on the MMO's boards. Thus the "Vocal Minority" statements you see on boards.

LOL!!
Scrap a game that has 250,000+ subscribers? YAH that'll happen!
"Watched him play" Well, first of all your friend is a total idiot for not using stims to heal himself (instant healing, thanks, on a 60 second timer between uses, thanks) and since he appears to like to solo he's even more of an idiot for not having at least novice medic as well.
He was soloing, what do you expect? In my guild we go out in 4-8 man teams hunting (always have, even pre-CU with up to 20). We'd have some folks tanking some folks healing and we would kill entire lairs within minutes.
Oh and since when ISN'T killing things pretty much "rinse repeat" in ANY MMO? Eq: Run up, kill things, rinse repeat Eve: Fly up, kill things, rinse repeat AO: Run up, kill things, rinse repeat UO: Run up, kill things, rinse repeat Lineage: Wait for it... oh my god: Run up, kill thing, rinse repeat Oh wait... the new wonder child: WOW: RUN UP, KILL THING, RINSE... REPEAT
The thing about SWG is you can play classes that have NOTHING to do with killing things. A Doc can join a group and never fire a shot in anger and get xp by healing the team. An entertainer can get xp without ever leaving the cantina! A Crafter can gain skill and eventually master by... oh my god.... CRAFTING...
Combat, no matter what game you play, is a 'rinse repeat' process. Even in SINGLE PLAYER... doom, quake, ROTS, whatever... run up, kill it, rinse, repeat.
The ONLY "time sink" in the game is getting to JEDI and they made that take a long time because they want it to take a long time to get Jedi so everyone and their brother doesn't make a jedi.
Race selection: Please name another Star Wars Title that lets you choose from as many races. Customization: No other game gives you more control over how your character looks. Height, Weight, Build, Mass, Facial.... EVE is a bit better at the FACE but it doesn't have a body. Clothing is more varied than in any other game as well. Armor: More varied... Equipment: More varied. Crafting system: Um you obviously are just a troll who has no clue. SWG's crafting system is the best in the industry right now. Even according to people who QUIT the game because they didn't like it. Skill system: Again, one of the ONLY non-linear skill systems out there. Among the best available. And the "grind" is almost non-existant if you play with friends. Graphics: Sorry, please go look at the screenshots that Fadeus is posted and notice that the graphics in SWG are first class. Gameplay...weak.. I'll let you have this one since gameplay is a matter of personal taste and can't really be quantified.

Well i've been playing SWG since it first came out. There has been a lot of changes since it first came out and there has been a continous flow of people leaving the game and coming to the game. Also with the release of the expansions more content has helped rejuvanate the "flame" of SWG. Like any MMORPG people don't always agreee with what SOE does especcialy with the CU , but people will eventually get used to it. With Publish 19 coming out I think the newest people that will be mad are the jedis because they are getting mega nerfed, but for good reason because it has become increasingly easier to become a jedi. In the end there will always be people that play it and it most likely will never completely die off. I believe SOE will also continue to release new content to stimulate people growth of the game.

This is one LONG thread... well if you take into account when it was first created hehe.
I have been playing SWG since somewhere in 2003...
SWG has for me been a very nice MMORPG, and the worst part is trying other MMORPG's because of what I think they are missing, when comparing it to the skill-based and crafting system of SWG (Pre-CU). (Everything else feels like LVLVLVLVL and crafting/items are lacking - when comparing to other MMORPGS I have tried).
I quit last year for 6 months, and came back two months before they stuffed in CU. For me I had been struggling the past 1½ year to get Jedi, and I finally got it 24/12-2004, although I quit a month into CU, and it was nice to finally getting Jedi, despite the million other who also were lol.
Personally I think SWG has been the best MMORPG I have ever played, but for me it isn't the same anymore. In the beginning SWG was almost "mysterious" finding holocrons and only hearing of ONE jedi. Sure SWG has had some maybe even tons of bugs, but ultimately for me, it has been one of the most giving MMORPG's.
I don't know about everyone else, but for me comming back and seeing SWG for a few months from late 2004 to 2005, has broken the picture I once held before I came back. I had been playing on Intrepid, but it just feels dead. Sure I live in Europe and it's an American server, but towns are huge and players are few. I don't know where they are hiding, but in the "old" days, you could find people almost everywhere.
Summing up everything I have read most of this thread and I have given it some thought, in the whole I really liked the game, and I don't hope i've bored anyone too much with my small post.
- No one forces you to play SWG, if you hate it too much, stop playing it, and leave the people playing it alone (Although I quit after CU... didn't I say that already?)

I think you need to read the posts alittle better if thats the small amount of credit you can gave the posters in here. I don't think you did anything more then skim this thread before posting.

"from what ive heard(ive never played it but ive seen all the forums and what people have to say about it) i think people who say its dying are the people who didnt like the cu at the time."
Double post sorry. You'd think I'd be well adapted to lagging web sites after SWG but I panicked in the Flashback moment Sorry
Race selection...weak...customization..generic...crafting system...very weak...skill system weak...
graphics..decent...gameplay...weak.
Um... where are you getting your figures?

"Watched him play"
Well, first of all your friend is a total idiot for not using stims to heal himself (instant healing, thanks, on a 60 second timer between uses, thanks) and since he appears to like to solo he's even more of an idiot for not having at least novice medic as well.
Eq: Run up, kill things, rinse repeat
Eve: Fly up, kill things, rinse repeat
AO: Run up, kill things, rinse repeat
UO: Run up, kill things, rinse repeat
Lineage: Wait for it... oh my god: Run up, kill thing, rinse repeat
Oh wait... the new wonder child: WOW: RUN UP, KILL THING, RINSE...
