Today Show Thinks Adult Gamers Are Weird

To be honest it seems that the statement was completely vague - then again coming from an idiot like that who couldnt get a point across concisely is to be expected. Doesnt mean to say the concept is completely wrong.

30 is assumed to be an age of more maturity. Why has this particular age range been picked on?

1.) At 30 - An adult pursuing a career is assumed to be very much into it and it would probably be one of the priorities of their life. This ties into point 2. Having a family -> you'll want to be considering providing them shelter and making money to buy/rent a house and support them.

2.) At 30 - It isn't strange for an adult to be considering or have a family - wife and child. This is where their priorities should lie. 'Spend time with your loved ones'.

While I believe it is quite bad for a person to neglect their own hobbies and interests - it all comes down to balance.

If you can successfully balance a working life, family life and an online life - more power to you. Sadly the case often in society is that a lot people can't.

Long story short. ANY Hobby or activity which you invest a significant amount of time to the detriment to the rest of your life is bad. This applies to any and everyone. If anyone knows, I think I do - coming from a hardcore MMO background and having to re-assess my priorities as life goes on. I personally know that I will find time for long gaming sessions still, but not as often and not for as long as I used to. Theres just simply other shit to do in life than gaming.

TLDR - extremist schools of thought are bad mkay.

Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.

Being European i don't know these people and i don't care about their opinions at all. I liked reading this thread though :-)

Do you guys seriously think the gaming community has something to fear from people like this? Dinosaurs eventually die out and so do their opinions.

Haven't liberals generally been more accepting of video games than conservatives?  Anyway, I don't think this stupidity from the Today show has much to do with political leanings...I think it has everything to do with the hosts being extremely ignorant.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Recently the hosts of The Today Show took a break from their regular talk show schedule to laugh at the thought of adult gamers.

"Do you think it's okay for men to play video games in their 30s and over?" Asked one of the announcers, unable to get through the question without breaking into laughter.

Kathie Lee Gifford didn't wait to weigh in with her opinion, proudly proclaiming "No, that's weird. Xbox."

"The answer is no," added some guy named Donny Deutsch, who Wikipedia says is a "TV personality." "When you're in your thirties, there should be something more on your mind or attention than video games."

After agreeing that it's okay for parents to play games with their kids, Hoda Kotb provided the last glimmering insight, stating that the question is only referring to "those weird ones in the basement."

We could, as GameSetWatch pointed out, respond to their criticisms with the fact that the average gamer is now 37, that women make up 42% of gamers, and that a whopping 29% of gamers are now over the age of 50 - which by the Today Show's standards would make them really weird. But I'm alright with this trio's unduly harsh judgment, because honestly, I can't think of anything weirder than listening to what a bunch morning talk show hosts blab about in-between commercials for reality shows and soap operas.

The current format for the Today show is a symptom of the exstintion of real journalism, the death of Walter Cronkite sent a signal to these vulture like celebritiies that thought they could carry the torch.

People need to get away from the thought of how life should be lived.  The woman shouldn't have to stay home to cook and clean.  The man shouldn't have to go off to work every day.  You shouldn't have to get married in your early 20s.  You shouldn't have to have children shortly after.  You shouldn't have to buy a house before all of this.  You aren't a loser if you don't live this life.  Get over it, people!!

Really, why would I care what two, fat, old, menopausal, housewives, with diarrhea of the mouth , stuck on the boob tube to entertain elderly consumers of makeup products think of me for playing games on the PC rather than sharing their Barbie Doll collectable hobbies?

    Pffft...

These people are just out of touch with what is going on in the world today.  Yea, 10-20 years ago it would have been wierd because all the adults didn't grow up with  video games, but now since video games have taken off and the technology has improved  it isn't unusual anymore.

In fact most people in their 20's and 30's play video games. These people need to stop living in the 80's and 90's and get in touch with today's generation of gamers.

They think it's wierd , but the funny thing is more than half the population of people in their 30's are gamers of some type and they have jobs and they don't live in a basement.

Really, who are they to decide what is wierd and what is not wierd?  You can have a job and play video games on your free time. That does not make you any more wierder than the next guy.   Wish these talking heads would just shut up. It's not like they know what they are talking about anyhow, because it is the norm for adults to play video games now , in this day and age.

I think people that watch TV are weird, I'm 35 and never owned one, just cant be that passive unless I'm asleep.

but I'm not so much of an ass as to laugh about it like these hos.

I'm also not so much of an idiot to think that my non-tv watching is a superior lifestyle, or that its not totally subjective of me. Its entertainment ffs.

TV loving bro: you should watch this show.

Non-TV loving bro: meh, i don't like TV

TV loving bro: Well you are wrong.

Ya adult gamers are weird alright.

You get some stereo type of an older guy living in a basement who is overweight.. has bad acme and eats bags of snack food and has IV bottles of some kind of soda strapped to his chair.

Then you got the stereo type of an adult male who watches the today show.   They sit on their couch eating bags of snack food and have two extra large coffee mugs strapped to their hat.   They are overweight, have acme but a slight tan from the sliding glass door they sit next to.

Two totally different things there and one is way weirder than the other.

I'm the in between stereo type... because I don't have a basement and my living room is "two steps" down...  I don't watch tv at all but I do have net flix streaming movies on my second monitor as I play adult games.. err I mean as I the adult play games.

To me, I think it's weird that people would even actually watch the Today Show, and as far as I'm concerned, the general TV watching audience is about as mindless as you can get. So ultimately, what does the opinion of a few morons matter?

I think that pretty much says it all.  Some people are just grossly out of touch with society as a whole. You'd think talk show hosts would be a little more informed.  These two are a joke anyway.  This just exemplified that point.

The reason some people game and it is part of why I game is that I want to keep a little from my childhood. Is there anything wrong with that ?  I also try to game so I can connect with my son as that is a way when at home that we can share time together.

The world has bigger problems than adults gaming .....

Lmao when are non gamers going to realize that once you are a gamer it's final....thers no going back.....no rehab.

once you catch it it's permanent.

Thers no age you run into where you wake up and suddenly realize you don't want to immerse yourself in a fantasy realm. It's akin to being a bookworm.

It isn't some disease that can be managed with therapy sessions. It's a fundamental change in what you expect as enjoyment.
