ArenaNet might hold onto the 8th Prof until literally the game ships as a final boost to the hype of the game... That could be a smart move?!
No, I think it would just tick off a lot of players. Many, like myself, are already frustrated with the wait. In my case, I've been holding out hope to play a Mesmer since day one. Keeping that kind of thing until just before release only makes them look like they're playing stupid head games with people and I doubt it will be appreciated, even if you're not a Mesmer fanatic.
And what if it's not a Mesmer? Perish the thought, but people want to know their options in advance of release. I want my special GW2 sig too, ya know.
I really doubt GW2 will coming out in 2011,more likely spring or summer 2012.
there's just too many other titles this holiday season to compete with.Anet is not going to rush
this game.you also have SWTOR to contend with. 2012 release date,my prediction.
GW 2 is going to be special,I can wait longer.
Spring 2012 makes the most logical sense to me too, right around the anniversary of the original game's release, but things seem to be ramping up quickly now. Beta is on track for this year and it doesn't sound like it will be a long, drawn out affair either. Given that the game has been playtested heavily for years already and the process is still ongoing, there may not be much to actually fix as a result of the beta process. If it's short enough, a December release is possible.
From a timing perspective, spring would also be better because it won't be going head to head with SWTOR. The payment models are substantially different but people only have a certain amount of time to devote to gaming regardless. SWTOR will still be new and shiny in December, but by next spring, some of the luster will have worm off and many more players will be amenable to a change of scenery.
All I know is that I really want this game to release as do all of the rest of you. Arenanet won't fail us that's for sure, they are out to create the best game possible.
With everything that has been shown to us so far, they have stirred all of us into a frenzy and when they announce beta, keyboards and brains will melt, and underwear will be soiled.
Can't wait!
Edit: One thing I honestly wish they could reveal to us would be a base system requirement to play, but I know that they are unable to at this time without the proper testing and whatnot.
1) it has been confirmed that we should not ekspect any kind of big surprise for either Pax or Cologne. Martin have been very vocal about that on the guru
2) Last year ArenaNet actual went silent for a while after the conventions. ( with all the ekstra work put into getting stuff ready for conventions - it is time to care for the workforce). I would ekspect the same to happend this year
3) There is stil alot being worked on in this game and reworked! People tend to forget that since the elementalist have been shown, 80% or maybe more of her skills have been changed. The iterative work process create results but cost time.
4) ArenaNet tells os they show what they have ready.
5) They moved to a bigger office this spring for a reason.- with space for growth,
6) for the sake of it,they called that the game was Pre Alpha this spring.
--The Optimist in me calls for a spring 2012 release, but it could just aswell be later considering the speed of things

They said in some interview that they were testing the game in gfx drivers that were no longer sold in stores and had to order them directly from the company, and also said that they have good gfx designers that allows the game to run on a very wide spectrum of computers. So i wouldnt worry to much about it, a 4-5 yo computer should run it perfectly
one thing everyone forgot to mention ---> Crafting
i know its not "super" critical and all but the economy and the future of the game might depend a bit on it...and also Areanet promised a 'robust' crafting system. Seeing that they have innovated in a lot of sectors.. it will be interesting to see thier crafting system.

Crafting has already been explained in one of their blogs. It's the most conservative system in the game, minus the grind.

I was thinking something similar. Even if they don't announce at Gamescom, they're going to have Sylvari week before Gamescom (pretty sure), so that only leaves Asura week. And only one more profession to reveal, too. That's not much more info to get out to the adoring masses, and they can't just have a six-month dry spell. If we don't get a date at Gamescom or PAX then we will soon at least.
They still have plenty of information to announce. They haven't touched too much on the PvP aspects of the game yet (we know tidbits of information here and there, but they could definitely spend an entire month on details of the PvP systems in the game). We don't know if all the features have been announced yet (the sound features were suprising) either. They've been rather masterful at keeping the hype train at full speed, even better than Blizzard was at it with World of Warcraft.
I bet we're close to a beta date, but I don't think it will be this month. Still there could very well be an announcement after Asura week and the final profession reveal. Considering the level of polish they want to put into the game before releasing it to the general public I'd figure beta won't be till at least early Q1 with a release date of late Q1 to late Q2. That's just a guess of course.

Public beta that is. Closed Beta may have been started already.

I'd say herp to that derp. You were intentionally trying to confuse the less-informed in order to make their degenerating brain cells implode.
We all feel like we've been waiting too long already for this game to release. We all want to know when this game is going to be released, and not "when it's ready" but a date for the small closed alpha, closed beta and release...
But alas, no amount of moaning is going to speed things up.
Gamescom is around the corner so to speak, the first (small) closed alpha is almost certainly going to be for 2011, maybe the larger beta too, but release will most likely be for early 2012 at the soonest. No matter how badly we want this game to come out right friggin' now...
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...
PvP is going to be a huge attraction for GW2. My eyes are on Open World PvP, and what that entails. Is there going to be seige warfare? How large scale are the battles? What kind of terrain is offered and how it will be exploited open world and instanced?
So many questions, and I hope we get to some very interesting answers.
These are very interesting times, indeed.
There isn't any open world PvP. At all. All PvP happens in instanced areas away from the PvE areas, the two are completely disconnected. PvP happens in a sliced off section which is deisgned for WvWvW. But it won't be happening in the same woldspace as dynamic events and such. This is for the benefit of both true (as in, not vultures) PvP players and PvE players.
From the first page, I know. But I felt it had to be stressed again.

Too bad the world will probably end well before this game is ever released. 2012 is imminent!
But fortunately, when the world ends Rift will die as well.

Good sir, the alpha testing has been going for a long time. And the closed beta is confirmed to take place this year.
