[New] Appearance tabs now wanted by BioWare

@Rockjaw Can you clarify if SWTOR will have dressing room & appearance tab options? As haven't found any info regarding these options yet?

They said this was in reaction to the WoW patch, or did they state before that the appearance tabs wouldn't be ingame?

Or was this just another item on their 'Wall of Crazy', as in 'it's something we're considering, but will only seriously start to think about after launch'?

Where does it say it's in response to WoW, or am I blind?

  • IkedaIkeda Member RarePosts: 2,751

No, they've stated in the past that they wanted people to choose their equipment based on looks at the expenses of possible uprades to stats.  Basically "cool armor" may not necessarily give you the min/max "stats".  I've read that a few times in the dev pubs.

TBH, not having a vanity item is pretty funny as it's a concept that a LOT of gamers (particularly RP'ers and guilds) use to distinguish themselves.  I want some pink Sith armor.  If a Sith is man enough to wear pink, you don't want to mess with him in his pink armor :-P

WoW is stealing LOTRO customization then?  Or any of the millions of games before it?

So wait, you first ridicule Bioware for not having it because it's a feature many want, you then ridicule Blizzard for "stealing" it? :P

Don't get feisty on me.  I'm not ridiculing ANYONE.  I'm simply saying that the OP brought this up as Bioware REACTING to WoW's move.  It's simply silly ESPECIALLY since this isn't a wizz-bang gee-whiz new concept.

I'm honestly shocked it's taken WoW this long, and even more shocked Bioware is even debating NOT having this feature in TOR.

It's 2011, appearance tabs should be a staple in every MMO like mailboxes and auction houses.

Here's how you make it right -

    1. Don't include dyes for colors like White/Black/Pink/Neons etc. because some idiot will use them and ruin the immersion of everyone else.

    2. Don't allow free form dying of armor, instead pick a major color and be given set options for secondary/tertiary colors based on what the primary is so everything actually matches and looks good, no matter how tasteless the player may be.

    3. Match vanity pieces to stat pieces by armor type/slot. No plate wearer looking like they are wearing cloth.

Vanity / appearance tabs make developers work harder to create items/item sets people actually want to equip to get the look. This is a good thing. Seeing how bad some of the WoW Tier sets have been, having vanity/appearance tabs put a "fire under their ass" would have been a very good thing.

The vanity tab was something BioWare was against from day one, but since they said it wasn't in game the forums pretty much swam with people wanting it added. I doubt they are considering adding it because of wow, I'd say it might have something to do with a few polls that top outed over 2k people demanding a vanity tab.

I would have to agree with this.  BioWare has been VERY receptive so far to changes based on what the community wants.  The polling they did to rename the Jedi "Wizard" to Jedi "Sage" is the most obvious one, but if you go back and watch the multitude of interviews they have done, you will see a lot of times that they mention changing things based on what the "people" wanted.

Lotro, Aion, Rift and soon WoW are having them so I think stuff like this will soon be seen as standard. I honestly think appeareance items are something everyone likes and wants.

So devs would be braindead not including it.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Blizzard is run by ex EQ Uber Guild Leaders. These people are NOT role players. They do not care about role playing or role players. In fact they look down on them and snub their nose at them. This is also part of the reason why WoW is a failure as a role playing game and the story is very poorly told; with story being the heart and soul of any role playing game (ala Dungeons & Dragons for example). They don't get it, they never gotten it. When you're building a role playing game, the last people you are are people that are against the game on a conceptual and fundamental level to be your developers, and that's exactly what Blizzard did. They have only themselves to blame for their problems.

I think Blizz knows that they are on the ropes now. They have lost approximately 800K subs after Cat. This is the first WoW expansion that they did not only not gain any subs, but they actually lost subs. They're scrambling to try to get people to come to back. They are all but begging people. Now they have games built on newer technologies with a proper story telling system in place that are about to be nipping at their heels. The sad thing is, even though they put this in, they are too late. I talked to some RP'ers today that said they still wouldn't go back to WoW. In the end WoW is all about phat loots. Story doesn't really matter when it comes to the game and game play.

Bioware has always been the proverbial masters of story telling in the game industry. I don't think it's unreasonable at all for them to put in apperance tabs or even their own version of a transmorgification system. I expect that at some point in time that it will go in and we will see it in ToR. I don't think it is a question of "if", it's a question of "when".

so should day/night cycles, swimming and a host of other things .. I love all of these next gen games that are removing most of what makes an MMO an MMO .. can't wait for the first gender locked AAA title with it's fanboys telling us it's fine cuz diablo did it.

Not really, they have been against even when all the polls showed over 75% of the voters wanted it. Their kept saying players will have to choose between the look and the stars. For the little story they removed the poll in the main appearance tab.

What made them change their view is now along  SWG, EQ2, LotRo, DDO,  WAR, AoC, RIFT and soon GW2 even Wow will have it.

AoC only recently added it, WoW doesn't even have it yet, and from BW people's own statement nothing is certain yet.

For the rest you have presented zero proof that your OP is right, your conclusion that their comment is as a reaction upon WoW's change is purely speculation, in this case your own.

    Teh. Amusing.

Anywhoo. I think it is good to have appearance, most for the more individual look. Otherwise there is always the effect that every player of Class X and Levelrange Y looks the same, using the best armour there is. IMO appearance tab is something needed for a real Triple A MMO. Good to see they adapted.

Personal opinion - it would be a move in the right direction for them to include it. Everyone of X class is going to experience the same story (options), have the same companions use the same weapons and without a appearance tab look the same. This provides no sense of real "ownership" that can be displayed. You might get to make a small variety of choices in story (good, neutral, evil), but you can'd display that, but an appearance tab would allow you to look different at least.

I am glad Deewe sat down and chatted with the devs and found out exactly what inspires and influences them, so he could relay the info to the rest of us..

But really, your posts Deewe, almost seem like a troll attempt , I cant figure it out because they make no sense..

Other then WoW is adding appearence tabs, and MAYBE tor will to.. is there a point to this?

This information about a possible appearance tab or whatever has been mentioned many times on the forum and they said it's "on the wall of crazy" a number of times for post release.

But thanks for letting us know buddy.  Your extremely late update was needed.

It's enough that everyone of the same class has the same backstory and the same voice, at least let people dress different.  I mean, I understand clones are a major part of Star Wars, but this is a bit overkill.

Appearance tabs are not actually needed in SWTOR, once people understand how mods(equipemnt mods not software mods like in wow.) and equipment works. I bet once Bioware shows off this feature people will flip out because it is so cool.

  • azmundaiazmundai Member UncommonPosts: 1,419

im no coder ... by any means .. but what is there to think about?

    if ($vanity_slot != NULL) load($vanity_item) else load($equipped_item);

surely its not that easy .. but i'd be ashamed if I had to say it would take my crack coding team more than an hour or two to get it working.

yea i think people tend forgot about what could be done with that.

Mods will be their own class of items. On the one hand, there’s the diversity of looks so achievement is visible, on the other, the mod system will allow players who wish to, adhere to an iconic look from level one to 50. Yes, you can totally look like Obiwan Kenobi, with the humble un-dyed linen garb and brown wool cloak look. Crafting will also allow players to change the color of their blaster blasts and light sabers.

I have played MMO's that had no appearance tab at all, and they played fine, without the argument that you're using here as if it makes 'clones' of player in SW.

Personally I think it makes more sense to have no appearance tab and what you see is what they are wearing in combat, more realistic, but I can also see the other argument where realism is let go here and opted for convenience, where people can choose how they look without having to keep stats in mind. My preference is to no appearance tabs at all in an MMO, but if they're added, that's alright by me too.
