MMORPG.com has partnered with Funcom to bring our readers exclusive news found nowhere else on the 'Net today. As The Secret World approaches beta testing, Funcom is ready to reveal new information about how the beta access will work. This is a definite must read for folks interested in being part of one of the most-anticipated games. Keep reading!

Things are really starting to heat up with Funcom’s The Secret World. We’ve teamed up with the folks from Oslo to give you the details on how the beta registration will work and the ARG (Alternate Reality Game) that goes with it: The Secret War. Essentially, after signing up for the beta, players will be taken to a portal on the website that will let them take part in an ongoing struggle between the game’s three factions: The Dragon, the Illuminati, and the Templars. Basically Funcom’s out to make sure we’re all in the mood for some Factional Pride long before the game hits its April 2012 release date.

Hey SB, thanks for the write up.  Great read. Sorry, but I'll be passing on this game.  Funcom has gotten me twice with regards to their other two MMORPGs.  April 2012?  I'm willing to bet you a box of krispy kreme donuts they don't make that date.  After all, it's Funcom and we all know how the AoC release went down.  Glad to see they got tomorrow rolling well.  Those that do play, I hope you enjoy it.

I like the sound of the event, not sure if I'll join in as I'm already guaranteed beta access but still I really like the idea. It reminds me of the out of game community events they has for The Matrix Online which is one of the reasons I am looking forward to this MMO.

This. I loved how I went out and bought ROTG shortly before f2p so I could get access to that content......only to have Funcom change their mind, and want me to pay for it a second time.

    Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard

Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.

All I want to know is what about the AoC ppl that resubbed with the TSW beta key offer???

This is THE mmo I've been waiting for. I know some ppl dont like funcom but their games are good (imo). Maybe its because AoC was my first MMO and it will always have a place in my heart :)

    I cant wait to play!

    biggest facebook whore=beta invite?????

This is actually a clever and unique idea for Funcom to get a lot of free advertising by word of mouth, but like Funcom's MMOs in general I am wary of the execution.

If you need to spam hundreds of people on facebook to get a guaranteed beta invite, then I am personally going to pass on this waste of time. If it is actually some time wasting little browser game that provides a bit more insight into the game while simultaneously getting the word out then great.

Anyway, if it is based on pestering people to sign up under your link on facebook as some kind of pyramid scheme for a beta invite then I hate the idea. I always hated those "browser games" where people would send you a link to signup under them, and you inevitably get spam and fake links all over the place.

Well-intentioned and creative ideas with an aggravating execution-- Funcom's MO.

It's fitting that their abbreviation for this thing is ARG!

Those of us, who did the society-tests over a year ago allready, being active since then in the forums... what about us?

This shouldn't be a facebook/social media contest, but it should be a contest for those interested in the stories and riddles of the factions. Writing essays, taking part in roleplay-forums, solving riddles etc this is what I'd liek to see happening, and not some buddy-programs.

Spot on.  Reward those that have shown their support already, not the social media parasites with this stupid Facebook marketing gimmick.

Are you shore this is correct. Can say I have seen any place that they where garunteeing  any beta if you got the Godslayer expantion. If you subbed for 12 months you got the TSWBETA and the expantion for free.

Game has quite a few interesting features.

Best one is skill-based character advancement system - finally some AAA title that resigned from level based one. How long it was since last relatively big game release without levels?

Meta-questing , 3 factions , interesting lore and setting (Lovecraft!)

Hope it will be good !

I do understand you. But think big, this will be a great promo for the game, and that will give Funcom more player. This meens the will have hugh team working on new content for the game in the future. I dont think this is all about spamming you friend, there is more to it than that. Probely more of the same you have seen on the forums. More riddles and sharing your love of the game. Getting a few friends to join the beta will help you but this is not all. There will be more info tomorrow the article say, sow stay tuned.

Indeed you didnt get Beta for just buying the expansion, you had to sub 12 months.

You have access to the low lvl stuff of the expansion. Most of this expansion is end content, sow if you go preemium you will get access to it all.  And this expansion was not expensive if you se all the content you got. The game with expansion cost about 18pounds including 30days play time of all the content.

    "The Secret War!" on Facebook!

Which means.... it's not secret, Facebook's already sold your info 60 times while you read this post, and you've just been hacked on 3 different games you play online.

I *knew* Facebook would be involved when I heard about this promotion. Looks like I create yet another bogus account while using proxy servers to keep my infection risk as low as possible.

Who in his right mind does ever again believe a word Erling Ellingson is saying?? Particularly when it is about features being implemented into a Funcom game?

That being said, the AoC-beta was about the worst beta i've been in. I'm not exaggerating when i say that it was handled so poor that there was a rebellion of the testers about to start in it's early month. Some of you may remember as well.

So please, get this dude out of my face and no thanks, no more Funcom betas.

I just thought I would post something here as there is a lot of malcontents here bellyaching about some things (of which they are totally legit, truly, without information).

This is from Tarib, the senior CM at Funcom:

Hi everybody, we just wanted to clarify some of the confusion around the announced beta sign-ups today. We are opening up the sign-ups on the 26th of August, and we would like everyone interested in The Secret World to sign up! That is because not only does it mean you have a chance at grabbing a spot in the beta, but it will also play a key role in upcoming campaigns and all those intriguing ARG style activities that tend to surface from time-to-time.

This is, in effect, an additional entry to those that have gone before. It doesn't negatively affect any previous chances you have entered into (or indeed won), so this is something that everyone can sign-up for when it opens next week!

So even those of you who already have a guaranteed spot in the beta (whether that was through competitions, or the Age of Conan incentives) should still sign up, so that you get to be involved in future experiences. It will not adversely effect your existing claim, and you don't want to miss out on the updates as we gear towards beta and launch! Those who already have a guaranteed spot in the beta, will get that access granted at an appropriate part of the beta process.

    source

I hope that eases some of the concerns.

As for the Facebook things with this offer, sure, its an interesting and different idea for an MMO, so good for them. I just hope its more complex than a popularity contest.  Hopes...

I love the idea of TSW. And I do quite like AoC. However, Funcom has this track record of terrible launches and it's usually months if not years until they recover and make their games good ones. So while I'm excited about playing this, I will wait a few months before doing so (and I usually will get games in the first week).

  • xmentyxmenty Member UncommonPosts: 719

^ This. They should just give closed Beta to everyone cos players are very weary of their games. If the TSW are good, they  could have more players hyping it up to their friends.

Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language :)

In theory I got a beta invite from AoC play ages ago...expecting it to bug out on me, though...but, heck, 2012, will be going up against GW2. I fear for Secret World against such a big rival mmo launch.

  • MarlonBMarlonB Member UncommonPosts: 526

I was interested ... but then saw the 30 minute gameplay demo at gamescom.

Several people couldn't even sit through the 30 minutes and left earlier.

Ah well ... i'm sure i'll find something to play next year :)
