it already have 2.5-3mil pre orders....  swtor will dethrone WoW finally...enough of this 1pixel game

I LOLed in RL at this thread heading.

Anyways... Rift had a lot of pre-orders too and look at how many active subs they got now in comparison to pre-orders/launch purchase.

Why would anyone want WOW to be dethroned? Then many of the WOW players would flock to other mmorpgs, infecting the communities of all mmorpgs everywhere. Keep these pieces of crap players locked away in their cestpool of a video game and forget about them.

Now i dont know if they compare BF3 preorder to BFBC2 preorder sales or life to date sales.

But the preorders for SW:TOR sounds huge.

And yes i know that an MMO success is in the long run.

Preorders where 300.000 in the US *after* the breack record was announced.

That record was of sales in a certain period of time.

This here is something I think will indeed rival WoW. TOR will introduce a lot of new people to the MMO genre. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing will depend on just what type of community it turns out to be.

I do believe that Bioware fans for the most part are a mature bunch. They love the stories and get into modding the games and whatnot. Star Wars fans are another story altogether, it's much too broad of a community and while many are indeed mature, many are not. I guess we'll have to see how it all meshes together to find out what kind of community it will ultimately be.

It will be a large community of course and there will always be a lot of immaturity in such large communities. But hopefully a more mature core community will develop.

How does modders have any relation wether or not they will play TOR?  If anything is shows how they won't be intrested and that they'll be sticking with NWN/NWN2 PWs and sit tight till Neverwinter releases with their D&D Foundry system.

It dosen't, it describes them as players, and I wasn't describing modders, I was describing Bioware fans. The fact that they're modders has nothing to do with whether they play TOR. Did you actually read my post or just skim? I was talking about the different types of players that are likely to play TOR and their maturity level.

I didn't say modders are Bioware fans, I said Bioware fans are into modding. That was a bit general since clearly not all Bioware fans are modders, but it does have a lot of fans who mod their games. It's the fact that they are Bioware fans that will draw them to TOR, not that they are modders.

Blizzard is beating down WOW just fine now... Since you're not playing wow you wouldn't know that...

Rift as a game didn't fail... it has massive player base and it's really doing more than ok... FFXIV did fail, but I never  did expec much of that game.

Why is everything about taking down WoW.  I just don't get it.  Is it WoW envy?? Is it just the enjoyment of seeing something successful being 'taken down'.  What is it.  As soon as WoW does lose its first place ranking and all of the 'I told you so' and 'I knew it' crowd are finished, will they shift over to the new number 1 and start the process over?  I just don't get it.

It's because wow has been #1 for too long and didn't bring anything new to the genre the last few years... People are just sick and tired of having this 1 game which is good and others which are trying to copy the successful one to have it's own share of the pie... What's frustrating is that no1 tried something new and innovative to take down WOW, they're all just copying the wow recepie (which isn't that successful anymore). Thank god GW2 is near and we'll have something new and fresh to play and enjoy... I'm not saying it should or it will bring wow down, even if I really want GW2 to take the throne of mmorpgs (since it's B2P model is great and it means if it succeeds everyone would have to follow it in order to bring it down).

It's all about us wanting new and fresh mmorpgs, and we're sick of this wow expansions which bring nothing new to us :(..

A game that is too similar to WoW is not going to kill WoW for that exact reason.

WoW is the only game killing WoW. Seriously, it will have to be a Blizzard game to cannibalize enough of WoW's user-base to do any serious harm to the health of it's subscriptions. With this next generation of MMORPGs I expect Blizz will eventually lower the sub price a bit to become a companion game for it's former diehard players. Titan or WoW2 will be the only true WoW killer as others have said.

Disclaimer: I think WoW was great but I never really enjoyed it for longer than 2 weeks at a time.

As I said upthread, a little decent competition could/should do WoW a world of good.  But honestly, I'll wager even Blizzard's next MMO won't be Fantasy genre again.

SW is also fantasy, only swords are made of light and the princess travels in a spaceship.

Fantasy: Warcraft, GW, Aion, Warhammer Fantasy, Rift etc some of them might have a hint of steampunk. See anything common here? They are all sword and board with mages and warlocks, catapults, usually with "typical" fantasy monsters and races, trolls ogres wolves elves or something very similar with different name and look etc. Usually they are located in a single world/planet, or very few, often there's some other "magical planes" or you know, fantasy stuff.

Sci-fi: Star Trek, Star Wars, EVE, Master of Orion, Warhammer 40k, Mass Effect. Common here? Futuristic setting, high-technology, space ships, galactic travel, tanks, lazer rifles, energy weapons etc. Usually spread around a huge area in the galaxy it takes place with thousands of systems included.

It's the setting, you cant rule out one thing like "it's like magic so it makes the whole franchise fantasy" - it goes both ways, mage is like herp derp from sci-fi X just replace fireball with lazer, magic teleport with high-tech teleport and so on, but that's bullshit, it's the setting that makes the difference. Sure you can have galactic travel in fantasy too, flying on your magical asteroid to other planetary systems, which is basically the same as if you used a space ship, but it does not feel the same, and that's the point.

We don't need to wait to know who the WoWkiller is.

    *looks around the room*

*dramatically points toward the man wearing a Blizzard shirt in the corner*

    There is your WoWkiller!

*gasps and screams come from all around the room*

Thats right folks its an inside job. They will make their game so sad and played out it will slowly kills itself. Their lack of originality will poison their success slowly until people just leave. It may never truely die, but for quite a few its been dead for a long time, and its only getting worse.

I doubt a game so much like WoW in nearly all respects is going to draw all that many players away from WoW. It's unlikely that SWTOR will kill WoW. SWTOR will have it's own problems without trying to "kill" WoW. Rift was going to be the WoW-killer, now SWTOR, what next GW2? If anything is going to kill WoW it will be Blizzard and since they can still go F2P, I think it will be around for a long time...

Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...

too bad WoW copied games before it..... everyone fails to mention them! you cant simply kill WoW it will take multiple GREAT games to eat it away. even bioware said they didnt want to take out WoW they just want a slice of the pie, per say.

Players can make ridiculous claims all they like but sorry not going to happen. SWTOR could be second most successful P2P game taking lead from RIFT but no way it is going to take down WOW.

I think the combination of SWTOR and Guild Wars 2 will take down WoW.  As much as past games have failed to even make a dent in WoW, this time it's different for the combined reasons of WoW aging and SWTOR & Guid Wars 2 being quality MMOs built by top-notch companies.  Quality is what will eventually bring down WoW from its high perch.  Nobody thought anybody would touch the invincible Everquest before WoW came along, after all.

To take down WOW, GW2 and SWTOR should be able to get atleast 10 million players or it won't be considered taking down in any terms. Moreover, comparing B2P game like GW2 to WOW is unfair considering one counts the number of players with active sub and other counts number of boxes sold.
