Would you have preferred that BW made more single player games instead of SWTOR?

Okay, so I really do not mean to rile up anyone with this thread, I just want to see how people feel about this.

I love Bioware and I love many of their games.  I spent I don't know how long on BG2, NWN, and KOTOR; I really regard these games as some of the greatest RPGs ever.

I'm looking forward to SWTOR as well, but I can't help but wish that BW would have made more single player games instead of devoting so much time and resources to an MMORPG.  The thing I'm looking forward to the most in SWTOR is the single player aspect of the game, the story.  The MMORPG aspect of the game doesn't really excite me that much.

I worry a bit that the story for SWTOR may not be as "epic" and fleshed out as the story of a single player game simply because you can't really be the center of the universe in an MMORPG.  Instead of playing as "Commander Shepard" or the son of Bhaal, you're going to be playing as "Smuggler" or "Jedi."

So in conclusion, I'm probably going to enjoy SWTOR, but I think I would have enjoyed the "I don't know how many" SPRPGs that BW would have made if they didn't do SWTOR much more.

Thoughts?  Opinions?

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

I voted no, but that is on one condition.  If they turn this into a raid or die piece of crap like the rest of the loser MMOs out there, then, yes, I would have preferred a single player game.

They should have used one of their own IPs for an MMO; MassEffect Online for example.

My bet is that the end game will be like that, but you could probably spend a lot of time going through all the different characters' stories instead of ever doing raiding.

Shows how little people know about game making company's.

While lead programmers and writers work on multiple tittles at a time the grunds do most of the actual work ,the nameless faces that code and design day in and out like a random canning food production company does.

EA is a big big company and there is no lack of funding toward SW:ToR and other "Ionic" bioware games. there are mutiple tittles in the works.

No. Especially because they are still making single-player RPGs AS WELL as this game. It's not like Mass Effect 3 is not coming out soon because of TOR...

In fact, both of the first two Mass Effect and Dragon Age games came out while Bioware was also working on SWTOR. I would like them to make both types of games. Fortunately they are!

Do you honestly expect me to believe that the resources devoted to SWTOR wouldn't be making something else if SWTOR was never made :/?

Sure, BW made other games, they made ME2, they made a horribly rushed DA2.  But if they didn't make SWTOR the resources doing it would have very likely made KOTOR3.  Heck, it would probably even have an expansion or two as this point.  DA2 also probably wouldn't have been terrible.

Yes, companies have lots of resources, but those resources are FINITE.  Talented resources are also pretty rare.  BW is not just some infinite pool of resources that you put money in and churns out games.  There are only so many talented people to go around.

OP you realize you are posting this on an MMO website right?

I'm ruined for single player games after playing my first MMO, EQ, back in the day.  The allure of building a character and interacting with people at the same time just destroys anything available in a single player game.  Not to mention most single player games have a small fraction of the content that an MMO has.  This is a no brainer.

Then dont post these kinds of threads! Dont worry about what other people think and just think for yourself. The world will go on without other people trying to micro manage other people or worry about what they think of you.

Now see Im suspicious as many I dislike/hate SWTOR threads begin like this......

You do remember that Bioware is still making single player games correct? DA3 is in the works also. If bioware choose to make a mmorpg its up to you the individual to take it or leave it.

Before making assumptions play the game 1st. There are enough people speculating on this site and others. Lets just use good ole facts to talk about the game.

So in conclusion, I'm probably going to enjoy SWTOR, but I think I would have enjoyed the "I don't know how many" SPRPGs that BW would have made if they didn't do SWTOR much more.

Again its not your decision unless you decide to get employed with Bioware and work your way up the corporate ladder to CEO. Again just enjoy thier games if you like them. If not there are many other options out there.

    Thoughts?  Opinions?

Thought? Opinions? It looks very suspicious that this is just another buttered up-"angled" form of I dont like SWTOR thread. Im not trying to be mean bro but please stop speculating ot writing about things you or I have no control over (except with wallet).

    No.

As much as I loved KOTOR, and Bioware's other SPRPGs, they always felt a bit lonely, and worst of all....

    ...they had ENDINGS.

SWTOR, as an MMORGP, has no ending. I don't have to sit here for years waiting for the next title....I get to keep playing.

This is why MMORPGS > SPRPGS, IMO.

I am on the fence here. I have really enjoyed Bioware's great RPGs (Baldurs Gate, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age Origins, Kotor, etc.). However, I also really enjoy shared experiences of pvp and instances with friends / family. I am hoping that SWToR can do both well, so I voted no.

  • BadSpockBadSpock Member UncommonPosts: 7,979

    No.

Only thing that would have been better is Mass Effect MMO - but we're still getting ME3.

Bioware just needed to do cooperative again.  I loved playing Baldur's Gate 1&2 as well as Neverwinter Nights with a friend.  They harbored some sort of hatred towards it ever since up until SW:TOR.

Don't make me LOL good sir.

I'm super excited for ME3 and DA3, as well as TOR.

They still make THE best single player RPGs out there. Skyrim might be great, I am definitely buying it, but ME3 is going to melt my life.

The leads draw up the plans and build the frame, the coders monkeys plaster the walls.

Why do people always mistake their own personal opinion for that of the legion?  give us anything sales numbers, something that says that MOST people look at BW as less than a top notch developer.

Agreed.  ME3 is looking really good, and ME2 was one of the best games I've ever played.  DA2 catches a lot of flack, and I agree it wasn't a stellar game, but it was a far cry from "horrible" as some have stated.  There are other compenies that also make excellent rpgs (The Witcher 2 was far better than I expected) but to say Bioware has somehow fallen way behind is a very narrow view of modern rpgs.

The MMO format may present some problems for the way Bioware like to present their games, but SWTOR is looking good to me so far.

The more names creating competition in the MMO market the better in my opinion.

Fail or succeed the business over all will be better having Bioware try.

With that said I'm never happy when I see EA's name involved with anything video game related. But I can cope.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

i don't really see that at all.

They are concentrating on different things but I still feel like I'm playing an active role, playing a character in their games.

However, I also don't see any genre as being stuck in time and accept that game companies might want to try different things and perhaps expand their vision of a particular genre.

To answer the op: Neither and both!

I am glad to see that they are brining their particular strengths to the mmo genre and I look forward to their future single player rpg's.

Bethesda's Elder Scrolls is THE go to for single player rpgness so it might not be fair to compare any rpg to it unless, u dig up Bioware's past games like Neverwinter Nights diamond :D Then again, don't listen to me I'm one of those guys who thinks ME2 wasn't better then ME1 well, in some cases but not overall.

But to asnwer the OP then YES! I would have probably prefered a single player maybe with co-op KOTOR 3 but thats just me.

Doesnt Elder Scrolls usually win the "grammys" of GOTY everytime?

    "LOL"

Maybe, but ME2 won just about every award video games are able to receive.

as someone who is waiting impatiently for Skyrim i'd have to agree... and.. ME1 imo at least, has been the best ME game so far, not saying ME2 is bad though.. just not as good as the first.. if ME3 isnt too far off the ME rails then it will still be a good game..... DA;O though.. mediocre.. and DA2  .. Meh... i dont think Bioware were really trying that hard for those 2 games, maybe their creative talent was focused on SW;TOR...  but.. as a single player game.. SW;TOR would probably make a convincing Kotor 3 ..    though as i thought the Kotor games were dire.. probably explains why SW;TOR has failed to impress so convincingly.image
