I've not read much at all about SW:TOR as it's not been something I've bothered reading up on, although considering it's the talk of most MMO websites these days, I'm wondering why exactly.

why do you think it's so popular?

I tihnk people should quit trying to convince "themselves" as to why they are playing and tell the TRUTH.The truth is people are basing it on something from the PAST,or the name itself or they are just jumping on the bandwagon hype because it is new and they figure there will be lots of players.Don't try and convince me you are going to play because you already know the game inside out, this is the same BS Wow players were  telling me as to why they bought Wow.

If this EXACT same game was released by Sigil games and called something different, there wouldn't be 5% of the same interest, that is the truth.

Would you play a game made by Sigil - that isn't known for its storytelling,  amazingly high production values, or overwhelmingly positive gameplay impressions,  that took those aspects from a BioWare game and utilized it for their own purposes of putting out an MMO?   I don't think you would.  I mean,  some would, of course,  but would it have the same kind of impact as a BioWare game?

I know some people can't wrap their heads around it,  but who makes your games plays just as big of a part of whats in the game.

Point of reference,  SOE.  How many people won't play SOE games simply because they are SOE games?  Sure theres the hacked accounts and poor security,   the sub standard support for some titles,  the rampant mismanagement,  but thats not to say that every game they put out is terrible,  yet some people wouldn't even give DCUO the time of day,  even though it is a good game overall.

BioWare is good at what they do.  Who is really going to deny that?  Maybe those who can't see the signs in front of their faces.   BioWares story is something people are looking forward to,  BioWares polish and attention to detail,  everything that goes along with the name - similar to what people thought when they heard the name Blizzard.

Sure, there are plenty of mechanics I'm looking forward to.  Yes, I have played the game, and have been in beta for about a month,  and no, even before then my reasons for being excited weren't to try to "convince" myself.

Why can't enjoyment or excitement be for the very reason that you are just happy that something you like, by a company you like, is releasing?  Why is there always some sort of backdoor reason where people "must be fooling themselves" for them to have a positive opinion.   SWTOR is popular.  Its for a number of reasons.  Blanket statements won't change that.

    Star Wars

    BioWare

Those two things are why it's so popular, OP.

  • nicksnamenicksname Member Posts: 45

No really its because they're following the current zeitgeist (I found the word!!)

I'm allowed to talk about it right? (checks the RULE book) yep nothing in the conspiracy of nutsos that says you can't blatenly talk about it SO thats the reason.

Money, bioware, storytelling, star ways... zeitgeist

im sure the big guys have it more planned than me but i, am but a mere postal worker (thats a Newman reference).

It's not, GW2 and this are the next shiny on everyone's radar, it'll launch, awesome for a month or two, novelty wears off, then the cycle starts over, new shiny on radar, rinse repeat.

Obviously some remain but the huge populous of players caught in this cycle are what give the impression of popularity, it's a wave, and with all things equal in mmo's it all comes down to marketing, and the bigger budgets win these spots (most of the time).

My guild / family / friends are all playing together ..

Normally I would agree with you. But considering its Star Wars I think it will do better than the normal "flavor of the week"  game. Just cant help but think of how long SWG hung on even with the horrible mismanagement the game saw.  Personally im sick of hearing how great TOR is going to be and while I may try it at some point its not something im all excited about. But  imo,  BW will have to mess up pretty badly for this game not to do well.

Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

This is the answer... pretty obvious. Same reason why WoW was popular -> IP + Developer.

its true i wouldnt be half as interested in tor if it was made by sigil games because sigil games isnt known for teh storytelling mmos.

Sorry but having a huge rep and having played past bioware games like dragon age and being a huge star wars fan i would of tried this game without reading reviews, seeing videos or any of the other research i have done.

No i havent had the pleasuer of p laying this game myself but with most games that come out u buy them without actually trying them usually.

I have bought many sports titles for my console just because i love ea sports games like ncaa football franchicse. I dont test each one out then buy it. I buy it because ea sports ncaa games and madden games are always good and play well and i enjoy them.

The same goes with fps a person who has playeda  companies fps games is more likely to put down money on a new title by that company then they are a diffrent company with no history of fps games. Bioware makes great story rpgs while theya re new to mmos the fact that its bioware story in an mmo is a huge reason to wanna buy this game and play it.

Hell if i dont like it all ive lost is the 60 dollars and thats ita s i get early acess and a monthy before i start paying a sub. So i can quit without every paying another cent if i dont loike it.

Bioware and star wars is worth the gamble with my money. Im gonna say what ive said before what makes people think its up to them to convince me i shouldnt spend my money on what i want to spend it on. What makes it yoru job to convince us that like tor its horrible when u havent played it either.

People rave about gw2 who have never played it based on there own research and im not out there telling them they are dumb and wrong and gw 2 2ill suck thats not mjy job so why keep trying to convince us that like tor and what we have researcheda bout it we are wrong when u dont know one way or the other yourself?

Its not yoru job i have every right to spend my money the way i want and i dont care what anyone says im gonna spend my money where i want to and im sure ill like tor. I have alot more confidence i will like tor based on past bioware games then i do gw 2.

What are you mad about? I said the BW would have to mess up pretty badly for the game not to do well. Or is it that your hype meter is so off the charts that everyone has to be uber excited about the game? As to your question, if thats what it was, I was reading to try and find out the answer to the question the OP posed. But all I find is the same tired hype.

Think it might also be because we've been in such an MMO drought.  What's come out lately?  Rift?  All else aside, TOR is releasing at the best possible time.  All the other MMOs coming later will have to settle for leftovers.  And even those disappointed or just bored after a few months of TOR might not be so eager to jump into another MMO immediately.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Im not mad in the slightest about anything.. Maybe I misread it..

you said "Personally im sick of hearing how great TOR is going to be and while i may try it at some point its not something im all excited about."

I was just saying, that if your so sick of hearing about it.. this probably isnt a healthy thread for you to be in.. nothing more.

I think someone is looking to start arguments anywhere over anything, regardless of any rational meaning lmao..

As for my hype meter, I dont have one.  I choose what game I want to play based on my preferences and what I am interested in, not what a marketing department or some fanboys say.  I REALLY could not care any less what others think or how hyped they are about TOR.. Because when it releases I will be playing it, not caring what anyone else still lurking around forums is doing haha

Sorry if I came off wrong, just thought it was wierd what you said about being sick of hearing about TOR, yet you participate in TOR threads..  If thats not weird I am obviously crazy or something,..

I'm glad the hype is there, but I still worry that it won't live up to the expectations. And lets face it, if SWTOR doesn't do well, and I mean very well, then there will probably never be this sort of investment into making a videogame ever again.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

I can't exactly say "why..." but speaking for myself,as a non-star wars fanatic, I find myself very interested in the game and do plan to pick it up. It isn't so much the hype as much as the "vibe" that this may really be an "epic" game. Time will tell...   :)

I hear ya.. to be honest 6 months ago I was like "pass" on ToR, leaning towards GW2.. as time on went on.. many videos and developer diaries and interviews and what not.. I cant recall ever being this excited about a MMOs release as I am ToR now..  I cant name a specific feature or anything but just as a whole game I feel its going to be epic..

I hope so, bought 1 collecttors editions and 3 digital deluxe for my household LOL, If im not really happy Im going to be pretty ticked off :-)

Might have something to do with being a franchise IP over thirty years old from films, books, cartoons, games, toys and even college courses.

It's kind of woven into American culture through popular shows like Family Guy and South Park even today.

You might as well ask why McDonalds, Ford, Microsoft, and rock music are so popular. It has a lore all it's own that cannot be duplicated easily because it mixes so many different parts like samurai philosphy, haikus, westerns, good vs evil and the classic "underdog" story.

This is why most mmos fail. They concentrate too much on the gameplay to catch the player's fingers and not enough time trying to grab the player's brain. Dumb games are dumb; immersive games are fun.

Star Wars gets people to take a look. What makes it so popular is a lot of people actually like what the game is offering that previous MMO's haven't. Most noticeably the story telling. (Not the fact it has story, we are aware many MMO's have a story but none are presented the way it is in TOR throughout the whole game). There are more reason but that is the big one which will hook people in my opinion.

Does anyone know if this will have a character inspect option ?   This will be the one thing that would keep me from playing. I don't care what gear others have and don't want you looking at mine.

    Waiting on Guild Wars 2
