What about people (like myself) who beta tested for several month now and who are still planning to play at release and for several month to come?
Care to elaborate about those ?
There is nothing to elaborate about you.
Not need to elaborate, you are right.
The answer is simple :
you guys are burnt out of ThemePark MMORPGs, just move along
So, TOR is the "Be All, End All" of MMO's then?
If a person doesn't like TOR, the only reason that could possibly explain it is that they're simply burnt out on themepark MMOs?
Do you really believe it's that cut and dry?
It doesn't occur to you that maybe - just maybe - they're simply not interested in a MMO set in the Star Wars universe (there are people out there who aren't fans you know)
It doesn't occur to you that maybe they don't enjoy Bioware's take on a themepark MMO as much as other developers'?
It doesn't occur to you that maybe - just maybe - they've played TOR and find it to not be all it's been hyped up as to them, and not something they'd want to invest time or money in?
It doesn't occur to you that maybe - just maybe - they're not crazy about the gameplay, the controls, the graphics, the questing system or any other aspect of it that might not appeal to them?
.. and so on...
None of that occurs to you at all? The only possibility you can fathom is that "those people are "burnt out on themepark MMOs"?
Really?
clearly. there is no actual good reason not to like SWTOR.
Here's my mentality and always will be. If it keeps MY interest and there are people to have fun playing the game with.. as long as the company keeps making new content and keeping ME happy, I'll keep playing. Could care less about the numbers of people, so long as there are people in the game.
Im not saying its EQ or something but... Look at EQ, they are still making sh1t for that game and there are people still playing it. Make fun of them, call them names, do as you wish, if they are enjoying it still.. then my goodness be happy for them.
If a person doesn't like TOR, the only reason that could possibly explain it is that they're simply burnt out on themepark MMOs?
The evidence is piling up that it's very much deeper than that.
List of games this forum didn't like:
LOTRO, AoC, WAR, Aion, Rift, a host of F2Ps, and now TOR. Basicially, everything that's been released for at least seven years, possibly even longer. That's just a complete sweep, every themepark that's be published since WoW. And if you're watching carefully, you can even see people already lining up to give GW2 the same treatment.
Now there's two ways you can look at these results. All the dev's fault, if only they'd make better games. Or--
Expectations that cannot be met in a reasonable time frame with a reasonable budget.
Does that not sound like the very definition of burnout?
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Just look up "fail" in the dictionary. They're all mentioned there. WoW and EVE met the expectations perfectly. The problem is that you can't play the same game forever. Everything gets old after a while.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).

What about the entire premise of this thread? Is there no redundancy in coming to a forum to express bitterness that people feel differently than the OP?
If it's okay for such a thread to be made (by your standards), why is it not okay for the opposite? Which seems to be what the OP is saying, he wants everyone to stop "hyping" TOR. Yet he fails to acknowledge, pre-hype is based on wishes and expectations, post-hype is based on experiences, if that's their experience, they're justified in sharing it.
He's trying to discredit opinions based on his own, what is more redundant than that? What happened to the simple premise of "each to their own"?

Of course it's burnout. You can't exploit the very same flawed mechanics for a decade and hope that people will be happy to pay for this crap again and again. It's easy to hate Blizzard but it was the only company that really tried to innovate. Of course it's all in the past now, ActiBliz only cares about money. Still, nobody picked up the torch.
P.S. Re. f2p MMOs: some of them could be alright but pay2win/pay2enjoy business model ruined everything. Once you start selling in-game advantage, you can as well go all the way because nobody will take your game seriously.

I was spoiled by Rift. I enjoyed the semi-dynamic invasions. A questhub taken over by mobs or fighting other players (from the other faction) who decided to claim a certain crossroad for their own. SWTOR has much less content, smaller areas and is more on rails. Still SWTOR did something Rift failed to do, it got me hooked. I pre-ordered on November 30rd and am now enjoying myself during Early Release. Did I mention you can make a chubby character? Not some fat alien, but a human with a few pounds too much?
Omg that is why I quit Rift. Tiny worldspace, abysmal endgame and meaningless pvp. With the statement above I shudder to think.
I'm just watching these threads with a slight grin and waiting. In 6 to 12 months I could really beat fanboys up on retention. The thing is all the fanboys will disappear when this time comes.
How many Rift threads are you posting in or following? Thought so.....

I can't believe someone would even believe for a second that SWTOR is more on rails than Rift and has smaller area and much less content. Sorry neither you or the poster you quoted have any idea or correct information about the game. Even the starting planets of SWTOR are bigger than Rifts normal map size.

Oh i wouldn't know because I wouldn't drop a nickel on this old worn out formula. I was referencing his statement. The meat of my post was this:

Perfect example of 'if it aint broke, dont fix it'. Capcom tried 3D fighting, and it just sucked. So they went back to 2D fighting games which people love. Millions of people have fun in themepark MMOs, not every new MMO is out there to change the genre, they just want to be the best of the current standard. SWTOR is that game.
If you want a MMO revolution, wait for GW2, Archeage or TERA, but for the love of god do it quietly. We get it, you dont like theme park MMOs that are being released today. That doesnt make SWTOR a bad game, it just means that you dont enjoy the current evolution of themepark MMO's anymore.
Fixed that for you.
You know, there are other directions themepark MMO's could have taken, see early DAOC for an example. (or Asheron's Call)

It's not only the way they went. It's also how they went it. They still can't even copy vanilla WoW perfectly, and WoW has evolved quite noticeably since vanilla.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
What about people (like myself) who beta tested for several month now and who are still planning to play at release and for several month to come?
Care to elaborate about those ?
Why is there a need to elaborate on it? There are people playing Mortal Online since release as well, does not prove that the game has longetivity.
However the retention will show that. For example Rift is already dropping subscribers steeply so it will be interesting how this game handles the 6 month mark.
Aye, you are right that Rift has lost subscribers in the last little few months, though I doubt your conclusion that it is due to the game itself. The release of several high-end (stunning) games may contribute to the loss, and I would suggest that this loss is felt by all mmorpgs.
In case you want suggestions on the new releases that could contribute to this: Skyrim, CoD, BF3, and the release of SWToR itself are going to be pulling people away from other games. Rather then being curious of how Rift will handle the population decrease, I wonder how many are going to come back in the following months. Hmmm maybe I am an optimist after all.
Sounds like desperation to keep the masses from playing SWTOR. Fail. Check the subs. We are in the millions and growing, You can't compare another recent MMO to it.
SWTOR is the first MMO since vanilla WOW launched where i have actually enjoyed leveling. that is a massive feat unto itself, because if there is anything i hate in MMOs it is leveling.
that alone makes this game a complete success. if it can make me like leveling again, im sure most of the unjaded MMO gamers are going crazy.
OP are you sure you're not just sitting in your room, projecting your own feelings into the internet?
because I think that's all there might be.
There is nothing wrong enjoying game for a few months "only". I thought the game is there for exactly that reason. if you get a few years out of it, than even "better" I supose.
Your predictions are like saying tomorrow will be another day - of course everyone will quit eventualy. Some sooner some later.
People have emotions and get excited. A big MMO excites more people. It's not about individuals praising it more than any other game. It's just a perception because there is a much bigger community and MORE people praise it.
Generaly speaking it's not about people getting pleased easily. It's about getting hopes up high and than falling hard getting all emotional. That's what is / will be reason for comming over to vent emotions on forums - a perfect place to do it without any consequence.
I assure you many more are and will enjoy it playing.
Personaly I had no expectations. After a long MMO career I am tired of themark games and haven't played em for the past 2 years. I only recently decided to give it a go after beta when I noticed SW actualy has done another big step forward in themepark-mmo industry, enaugh for me to try it.
Knowing exactly what it is, without any expectations I can only say it's a great game. Professional (something that many experienced gamers will praise sooner or later due to a big sea of unprofessional games flooding market), polished (haven't seen as polished mmo pre-release), and a big step in questing (we can easily call it "new-gen questing" which made me follow story for the first time in a decade of playing mmos).
Other than that I'm not realy expecting anything mindblowing. If it will be, than even better.
If I pull a line I guess we agree on one thing, OP. People shouldn't overhype themselves and expect a revolutionary mmo.
Anyone who expects that, will get highly dissapointed. Instead, try and learn to take it for what it is, as it still is a top class mmo - and that is what actualy brings in the crowd.

I know people will disagree and say blah blah its the same old thing with VO. I am really enjoying and enjoying the story.
I would like to tell you all what my good friend who I play all my mmo's with (its a good way to stay in touch since we live on opposite sides of the country) said last night. He is a huge negative nancy. He ****** so much in beta about the story and just spaced bar'd through it. Last night we were leveling on Taris and he goes, "oh wow im almost 19, between main story quest lines and character story I never notice how much I have actually leveled it just seems to happen." Again everyone may not like it but as negative as he is to sit there and admit that stunned me. I thought I was just gonna hear him complain all the way to 50.
Ashline, I will agree with you I have not actually really felt like I was grinding to 50. The levels just seem to happen as you play through the story and for me and my friend thats been a huge plus.
I know people will disagree and say blah blah its the same old thing with VO. I am really enjoying and enjoying the story.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
And that's exactly what I think it comes down to, desperation. People want so badly to believe that a game will come around and knock their socks off. A game that rivals the entry of the "so-called" titan of the MMO world. Logic and reasoning seem to fall by the wayside as thread by thread goes by. Personally, I do see the appeal. I would not say that SWTOR is a bad game, but would I say that it deserves the hype? Would I go so far as to say that it's lived up to the hopes of the masses? Well, no. Apparently many fans are placated, so I guess Bioware will fall on soft ground.
To sum up, I believe the game is decent. It certainly isn't as terrible as some that I've played. I do feel as though I'm running the gauntlet through a tired and far over-used system that we've all pretty much gotten used to. I believe that the fate of this game rests entirely on the shoulders of upcoming expansions. After a few months, I predict the veil will start to tear and people will begin to realize that they're just going through the motions. Huh, I guess everyone's just riding the "high" of the new car smell right now. Anyway, people are praising god that this miracle game has finally arrived in our lives. If that's how you feel... cool, but I have the feeling that you're easily pleased :P
I think the desperation is coming from people who want this game to fail, only to see what a hit it is with players.
Btw, nice patronizing post. I love when people think they know better than the millions of folks playing the game.
