Any one else notice that SWTOR has an abnormally large number of server maintenance cycles? Seems like it's every other night. I also find it weird that it's often at midnight. A lot of MMO players are just getting started at midnight. Isn't every other MMO something like 4am?
Do you think this is a temporary thing? I certainly hope so.
Edit:
The point of this thread is not that it is weird they are having server maintenance in the first week. It's weird they have such long maintenance periods. Their whole website was down for a few days just a couple weeks ago. Now they have to go down for several hours at a time. I find it weird.
I have never encountered another game or website that does this
Edit2:
Let me try elaborating more on what I mean...
This is a technology and process question. Not "OMG, the server's are down!".
It's "OMG, why are the servers always down so long? What is up with their infrastructure? Is this abnormal? Has anyone ever seen this before? Why do they have to bring down their website too when the game servers come down?"
Comments
The one on 19th was to prep for launch. The one happening now is more, but also marking the end of the grace period.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
Dude it's 3am WTF..
they accounced 3 maint periods over a week ago now, if you read the main swtor page or launcher at all, yould know this.
Also they are on eastern times they said it already maintenance will be on tuesdays at 3am eastern time. These are just normal since the game came out what 2 days ago.
I didn't see this one announced, any mention of when the servers will be back up? Would check swtor.com normally, but they do their website and game maintenance at the same time so both are down and nothing is showing up in my launcher about it.
Thanks.
This isn't the standard maintenance cycle as far as I can tell. They noted that these would be the maintenance dates well in advance.
they've also released some minor patches too..
I think we'll likely see maintenance once a week soon here..... for about a month or so while the population gets settled.
Launches always have alot of these at first. They are taking care of issues that are causing players problems. Yes, of course it's temporary. You really have to ask that?

Europe has maintence as well, it's 9:15 here atm so gametime on this free day.
This was in the launcher a couple days of go. This is the maintenance because of the grace period on pre-orders. They said normal maintenance will be the standard tuesday am cycle everyone else uses, this is offcycle.
I do. Because they have been doing this for several weeks now. Before it was just their website. Now it is both.
I am a web engineer, and it's pretty much taboo to ever take a website down. They do it every few days, so it is a fair question to ask.

I missed that, was this one planned for the same hours as the last big maintenance? So another 3-4 hours to go?
The servers come back up at 7am Eastern.
When the servers do come back up, anyone that hasnt 1. actually purchased the game 2. entered the codes at the website and 3. set their subscription information will no longer be able to log into the game.
Players who "preordered" online, in store etc etc recieved a code to access the game (usually 5.00 USD preorder fee) and have accessed the game for that price only up untill now. Now, you have to apply the *actual* game key code. If you ordered online, you should have gotten a 2nd email by now.
Basically anyone who aint paying wont be playing in other words.
The servers will be back up at 12pm GMT or 1pm where you're at.
So just relax, it's not like they are robbing you of a full day.
Server maintenance is to be expected in the first week, a lot of players also means a lot of problems, some more important than others, but they still have to be solved, or the players will be unhappy and leave, so go make some coffee, read the newspaper, do whatever, and the servers will be up before you know it.
My one issue is that they take the forums down at the same time they take the game down. Do not like.
The current down time was supposed to be short. It was only to end the grace period on EGA servers but they have extended it for whatever reason.
Launch procedures is all. I would think they will settle into a regular rhythm soon.

Thanks Tristanryan, just the info I was looking for.
I see. However, what I have a hard time understanding is why does that change take 7 hours?
Seems like a simple enough procedure.

I have to give the developers of Rift credit. Although they had numerous maintenaince windows from Head Start through the first week or two after release, the downtime was usually 10 to 30 minutes, with 15 or so being the most common.
I always worry about MMOs that need frequent, multi hour down cycles. It seems there is something not right with their database design and maintenance process. I also worry that it speaks of a lack of flexibility and redundancy on the part of their hardware set up. It should be possible today to dynamically load shift game servers between connected physical servers in a way that allows most of the actual maintenance to take place seemlessly during periods of low volume, with out servers having to be taken down, reserving scheduled downtime mostly for patching.

They shut down at 3 am ETA. That would make it 4 hours as mentioned in their sticky ... the sticky listing all downtimes for days now.

Oh and I'm not nerd raging or anything. I'm really just curious. I do this kind of thing all the time, and I just don't understand why they have to keep pulling all their servers down for hours or days on end.
And yes, doing forum maintenance at the same time is a bit questionable. Are they using the same machines?

Exactly why I made this thread! It's weird, right?

If you were a "Web Engineer" you would already know the answer to that very question.

No worries I am not raging, was just pointing out to the guy that the maintenance is now for all timezones so it may be 3am for him, but not for me.
Now I know how long it will probably take I will just find myself something else to do. I don't mind maintenance, I'd take a bugfree game over a maintenance free game anyday!
Would have been nice if they made certain the current launcher had the basic info though, but then again...we got mmorpg.com for emergencies!
The forums do not always go down. The last downtime they did not. They do however show down when their queue system cannot handle the load as their forums get over loaded during downtimes.
