"After almost 20 hours into the game I can honestly say that this is truly something special."

Lol, people have said the same thing about many games after 20 hours. I guess that's why they spend so much cash on the starting areas, that equals the box sales they want.

Heh, the reviewer sure likes it lol. I also think that it will especially (not only) play well for people who love(d) WoW.

Let me put it really simple:

What are you doing in a Star Wars MMO, when you're sick and tired of Star Wars? It seriously kills anything else you have to say about the game, since you shouldn't be playing it to begin with. Impartiality is null and void in your case, atleast to others (myself included).

When in the world did i ever say i was playing the game?

I expressed an opinion that had everything to do with the things i read about the game, and absolutely NOTHING to do with personal experience in the game.

I wrote entirely about the abundance of talk centered around the story in the game, and how I'm continually bombarded about how great the game is based on the story, and rarely ever given any opinion on how good the actual gameplay itself is.

I could you possibly read what I wrote and think that I even played the game?

Or did you just skim, see the very last line, and then make an assumption about what was actually written above it?  Cause that would have been pretty silly of you to do.

Let me put it another way.

    I'm not playing ToR because:

    1) All anyone says about it is that it's great for the story, and to me that isn't what makes an MMO great.

    2) I've read very little about what is good about the actual gameplay other then there are a lot of cutscenes and some choices you make, and that doesn't sound like fun MMO stuff to me.

    3) After 30 years of starwars I'm just not interested in playing anything simply because it's starwars, and unless there's something more worthwhile then "it's starwars" im not going to spend money on it.  And truefully, that's all I've really been reading.  "it's starwars", and that's just not good enough for me.

Unlike a lot of people, it would seem, individual story is not why I play MMO's and if that's what your biggest draw is, then I'm not going to get it.  Individual story does not make a better MMO, it makes a better SRPG, and ToR is supposed to be an MMO.  You can not possible have a better MMO when you emphasize the single player aspect of the game; you only succeed in making a better singleplayer online game, not a better MMO.

Especially when thousands of other people are doign the exact same individual story.  There's nothing personal about something thousands of other people are doing as well.

Even more so when I know that all they did was take and element from one of there single player games and import it to an MMO.  Or is everyone conveniently ignoring that they're playing dragon age with a starwars skin?

I skimmed the post. My bad. I see it now.

That said, I'm still wondering why you are discussing this. You're sick of Star Wars, and obviously Themepark MMO's. You're wasting your time trying to be smart about it, and I'm wasting my time replying.

The MMO is solid, but not new or groundbreaking. What IS new, however, is how you are sucked into the quests and lore with Bioware's cutscenes and voice-acting. Atleast its new to the MMO scene. It makes you feel part of the world, or rather even more so than the next Themepark MMO. To me, it's not that a quest is unique to me and that I impact the world by doing it, but rather getting motivated to do the quest by understanding why I'm asked to do so. To empathize with the NPC's instructing me. That itself makes the world come alive. This is the RPG part of MMORPG. The part you seem to forget. Roleplay.

Lastly, Dragon Age with a Star Wars skin? Yes please! Although it's Dragon Age 2, not 1. Or even better: Mass Effect 2. This is win, seriously.

    Which isn't that new either.

I take it you didn't play LoTRO? What Turbine did really well in that are book quests. They took the original story, added much into it and were consistent.

On the other hand, if you mean only technique how the lore and quests are presented then you're right. No one has ever done questgiving this big part of the development of MMO and sacrificed so much time and money from making the game unique and astonishing.

But with this invention of their comes another problem. Read text leaves more room to your imagination. And when you can use your imagination, you're usually more drawn into the story and that's what makes the world really alive. I, like many others I take it, don't read normal quest texts in MMOs. But in LoTRO book quests I did read every word there was. And I did so in Rift, in story quests.

Sorry for the bother, but I just felt like I had to comment on that red part.

Indeed, I was pointing out the technique. And for the rest, I can only agree. There's 2 sides to it, but I personally am glad they did what they did.

I don't need cutscene and voices to be sucke dinto the game. Please speak only for yourself. And I have felt just as much a spart of worlds in other games as I have in this one. If not more so, in games like AoC or Aion that feature extensive emotes, and character customization capabilities.

To me, it's not that a quest is unique to me and that I impact the world by doing it, but rather getting motivated to do the quest by understanding why I'm asked to do so. SO MUCH WRONG WITH THIS STATEMENT URGH.

First part: Again, speak for yourself. Also, you are not impacting the world AT ALL. That you enjoy the experience is a personal opinion and you're entitled to it. But to say that you impact the world? That's not true and this statement is factual.

Second part: Again, I don't need all thos ebells and whistles for the world to feel alive. But that's me and I don't expect it of anyone. What I do take an issue with is your misconception about roleplay. Roleplay is about interacting with other players, not interacting with NPCs.

The "RPG" that you refer to is present in EVERY game where you take on a role of "another character" that is not you. "ROLEPLAYING" does not refer to that.

What is wrong with you? OFFCOURSE Im speaking for myself.

(Referring to GP in red) Sure it does. What's "RPG" to you is not necessarily what's "RPG" to everyone. To use your words, "speak for yourself".

Personally, I find plenty of "RPG"ness in the way Bioware set up SWTOR. I feel like a part of the story and I feel connected to the world in the game. I feel like my choices are important and that I have a part to play in what's going on. In other words, I feel my will represented at least in some way by the character in the game and that the choices I make with that character are NOT irrelevant. That is the very definition of an RPG.

Few things I'd loike to point out about this article.

As many people stated 20 hours is literally nothing. In any game. You can't judge a game with a 20 hours played. Especially a MMO. Author rushed into conclusions because he was obviously very, VERY excited by a Star Wars game. Author is obviously heavily biased, trying to get some credibilty (unsuccessfully) with statements ".. and I was a Blizzard fanboi". This is more of a comment than a review. Stating this is the greatest MMO ever author is ruining it's credibily with the more knowledgable audience as this statement only proves his lack of MMOs played or heavy case of "fanboism". None of which is desirable in a game review. Maybe he just got caught in "new, shiny" syndrome which can be pretty misleading.

    DISCLAIMER: Personal Opinion ahead!

For every single positive review like this one I could easily find one equally negative. If the game was so revolutiary there wouldn't me so many negative reviews (probably some of the fueled with SW hatred) and retention rate would be much higher. Seems a lot of people expected more from BW. On the other hand a lot of people are satisfied with it. All in all, I think the game is far from revolutionary and anything even close to that. But is it a good game? I believe it has a potential to become a great game in time. But for now just an average MMO is enormous IP behind it.

I just noticed this was the editor. I hope for the readers sake not all of his articles are written like that.

Just a lot of bla bla bla.  Everyone has opinion.  SWTOR is good but the magnitude of goodness has yet to be determined.  It may be great but we must give it time.

And of course you've played more than 20 hours so you could come up with your opinion also...right?

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

I just thought to myself.. who even cares?  I've never heard of GamerGaia before and probably never will after this thread.  It's one opinion in a sea of opinions.

No I have not. I just read a lot on the subject that interests me. From the videos/reviews/endless articles and forum post I read I am confident to say there is nothing revolutionary about the game in any sense, and is far from best mmo ever. Author is a SW fanboy that waited that MMO for ages. It's is pretty obvious where he is comming from. As I said, a lot people are enjoying it. But I've played my fair share of MMO's to conclude this is nothing THAT different. Sure it has few fun innovations that make playing fun. But overall it is the same concept which I hope will be replaced soon. Unfortunately next year MMO's are all in the same bucket, except maybe for Secret World. And that is a BIG maybe.

I love this game, but it is way too early to make that statement. I certainly prefer it over the junk that is considered good in these parts, but it needs to be around a few years before making any "best"for claim.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

I don't agree with the article but this game is damn good!

Currently Playing: SSFIV AE, SFxTekken, SWTOR, WoW. Waiting for: GW2, Resident Evil 6.

So, by your own words, GW2 is also "in the same bucket"?

    I think you need a checkup :).

I have not put any stock into game reviewers in a long time. Their too easy to corrupt these days. These game review sites are about as trustworthy politicians.  Stick with real player reviews and word of mouth every time.

Yes, I believe it will be. Those promises look really nice and all but I'm really intrigued how is that going to turn out.

Old Republic changes your perception of not only what an MMO could be, but what an MMO should be.

Reading that, I am thinking this guy doesn't have a clue in the world. It definitely doesn't do that, and doesn't stray too far from the WoW mold. Even the Bioware guys said they didn't want to. There are many other MMOs (and I am not talking about GW2 here, but games that have already been released) that questions what MMOs should be. EVE did, Vanguard did, Ryzom did. GW1 challenged the idea of what an online community could be; even though it isn't a full MMO, it has a full community like one. Bunch of others I won't take the time to list here, but they did too. SWTOR ... didn't.

How could anyone take this guy seriously? I did feel like he was waving his raging fanaticism in my face.

"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."
