This award is simply based off hype and advertising.   If this trend continues (and it probably will), I can already name their winner for 2012 -- Guild Wars II.  In 2013, it will probably be EQ Next (even if the game doesn't make it to market my then).

Every quality MMo took a *major* step backwards this year

WoW-Cata was bad, first population decrease ever

    EvE-Leaked documents showcasing company greed

LOTRO-First expansion in years is lackluster

EQ2-Probably the best old contender, but DoV wasnt a smash and concerns of overcharging for AoD

Really it comes down to calling SWTOR a 2011 release.  If you do, then its MMO of the year.  If not its Rift.  not necessarily because they were new, but because it was by far the worst year for the older MMOs.

Rift really isnt MMO of the year worthy.  It wins by default.  Trion however would be MMO developer of the year by a *huge* margin, and would have won in a year with better competition as well.

It's the kind of crap like: "That reward was bought..." or whatever. It's like some don't comprehend that people think differently, hence the reward being based on an opinion, not a fact. It's fine to say you (not specifically you, of course) don't agree with something, but to condemn a website for liking something you do not is quite simply a highly disrespectful accusation.

    Star Wars: The Old Republic

    Developer: BioWare

    Publisher: Electronic Arts

We're still logging hours in a galaxy far, far away to bring you our full review, but this award should give you an idea how we feel about BioWare's long-awaited Star Wars MMO. From day one, the renowned RPG studio said it would set its game apart from the competition with story, voice, and choice -- and we'll be a scruffy nerf herder, BioWare has delivered.

Whether playing as a member of the Republic or the Empire, as a Jedi, Sith, or any of the other classes, our staff was sucked into SWTOR by its well-written storylines -- storylines we likely would have glossed over if they weren't delivered with a staggering amount of recorded dialogue. Add in BioWare's signature dialogue trees and the element of choice, and we've become fully immersed in SWTOR unlike any MMO before it.

There are certainly disappointments, namely in the underwhelming space combat mini-game, the technically unambitious graphics, and the thin character and starship customization options, but the positives tower over those like an Imperial Walker. Given the size and scope of The Old Republic, EA and BioWare also deserve credit for a fairly smooth launch. No one likes queues, but when it means your server won't crash, they're not the end of the world. We'll be playing TOR for a long time, and we think you will, too.

I disagree with SWTOR as game of the year but at least Gamespy gave some reasons to back up their choice as opposed to Massively.  Oh let me correct, Massively did give reasons but they were:

    1.  It just launched.

    2.  It had a ton of hype.

It's very likely their editors have had a lot more than a week to play the game...  And I'll go ahead and trust their opinion about what they feel is THEIR game of the gear,.

Grats to SWToR for making MMO of the year.  Saying SwToR should not be competing against other 2011 MMO releases must be a joke?

Oh, sorry. I guess any worthwhile MMO release must be a "sandbox" and/or a commercial failure to qualify? Please look back at 2011 releases: This was a walkover. The interesting thing here will be retention 3 months out. I really like to cheer the wellmade, polished games on so my hopes are that SWToR retains a solid sub-base.

Other games: Skyrim is one hell of a wellmade game. I love it and it deserves all the credit it got.

Now please run that, other more deserving 2011 MMO-release, by me again?

We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!

Ewww.. Skyrim as game of the year? I was done playing that borefest after week one. I loved playing Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas; but honestly, Skyrim's content is seriously repetitive. At times I felt like I was playing a MMORPG where all you do is tasks with no interesting storylines or conflicts.

Every dungeon looked the same.. same 3 types of enemies. I swear if I was going to fight yet another predictable undead Nord again...

Still not understand how an MMO can be judged so quickly as best game.

MMOs in an ideal world would be games that can and should be endured infinitely. Seems utterly short-sighted to declare it best MMO ever.

Also I lol'd at the one positive.

    Too soon to tell.

I would have given RIFT every award in the world in it's first month.

The Aelfwar Crusade in Silverwood is still one of the most fun things I have experienced in an MMO in the recent years.

Swtor only won because of a lack of any real competition, not because its actually a good game, I mean, rift was in 2010, and really the only major mmo release in 2011 has been wow cataclysm and thats just an expansion, so of course a game like swtor would win it, it was just due to lack of any real competition and not on the game itself, they had to choose something that came out in 2011 and there really was not many choices in the mmorpg field. I wouldn't be impressed by a GOTY when the only reason the game won it was because the game had no competition really.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

Heh I do, I also found skyrim really boring compared to oblivion, the world in skyrim was fairly bland and unintersting, the places weren't that intersting either, and the game was overly simplified which is what ruined dungeon siege III. Nevermind the fact the story was pretty much bleh and boring.

In general games have gone down the shittubes in recent years, mostly they are just milked for their name with the game getting crappier and crappier every new version, I mean, how many games that were released recently can you say the sequel lived up to the first one? I honestly cannot name one. FPS and sports games don't count, they are milked hardcore especally call of duty series, and the EA line of sports titles.

Still wasn't much competition, in this case I guess swtor won due to fanboys and again not on swtor actually being a good game, bribes also help. I mean star wars is well known but I can ask some people if they heard of rift and they say they never have, but if I mention swtor/star wars most people will say they heard of it. Me? I think star wars is alright, I loved the first 3 movies, but EP 1,2 and 3 kinda were bleh compared, it felt too.. phony I guess? But I have to admit it was total win seeing yoda kick some ass, I never laughed so hard in my life. Ep2 especally sucked, to much talking and lovey dovey crap and not enough star warsy stuff.
