Just have patience, a new game called ArcheAge is on the horizon and it "will re-define the genre". ^_^
I have heard the same about Darkfall and Mortal online. I really hope you are right this time.
Personally I give WoDO, GW2 and Class 4 better odds, based on what I know about their devs.
But AA do sound great in theory at least, lets hope they can deliver.
Watch this video, these guys designing the game get it. They know that UO is what should have defined these games and should have been the model for the design of MMORPG's. Go watch this video.
we hope they can at least keep the hype. in any case we will still have to wait.
they said the same about a lot of games like tera and GW2, for now only tera came out in korea, and it was not what people hoped for, so till the game is out we can say much;
for the op take this time to move on and never look back, this genre is not getting better so take this opportunity to be free
I didn't grow out of MMORPGs (the real ones, not the other genre that plays.... way ...way differently). Last two years I was having a BLAST in Project1999 (almost classic EverQuest experience). My problem is.... I got sick of playing the same game I wish if someone can make a real world like EverQuest (but better).
Some people are deluded. They fail to see the absolute truth about the many game mechanics that were eliminated from MMROPG post 2004. They all now play exactly the same. You always feel like you've played this game before, no one really wants to make their own game. They just copy what was done before but with less content.
I miss the Faction System, I miss Darkness being dark, I would like to see a First Person MMORPG for a change, I miss the difficulty of monsters (1 monster 5 levels lower than you can beat the crap out of you), I miss the big variety between classes (because the game was not designed with PvP in mind). I hate the fact that every game has PvP and every PvP plays the same with this ridiculous "honor" system. It's like playing a TV Game Show.
I miss the ability to kill anyone I want and face the consequences. I miss the NO HAND HOLDING. I miss the epic feel of the world because fast traveling was only available by other players and not the game itself. I miss when PvE was challenging. I miss the more strategic (resource management) and tactical (positions) combat instead of this Whack-A-Mole UI Combat system. If I want t play Whack-A-Mole I will playh Whack-A-Mole the last thing I want to do is press a button within 2 seconds as fast as possible. It was fun the first 10 MMORPGs but now with the 293th MMORPG doing the same whack-a-mole combat bullshit it's getting old.
I miss where you don't need to switch-on a quest by talking to an NPC instead all quest items are avialable in their sources and once aquired you can go seek those NPCs who needed it (why WoW made this retarded decision? and why every monkey is copying that till this day is beyond me). I miss class roles; now all MMORPGs have DPS, Tank Heal.. this stupid Trinity should go. I want more roles that you can benefit from. In EverQuest if you didn't have a good "Puller" you needed a good "CCer" to compensate that. Puller, CC, Debuffer, Snarer, Tank, Healer, DPS..etc. These are roles and we need to bring them back. Expand on it, don't simplify the combat system.
There are a lot of things were available in older MMORPGs that are not available in today's QuestDriven-so-called-MMORPGs.
I refuse to categorize a game like SWTOR in the same place as a game like UO or even EverQuest. The differences are huge.
I've been there for the last three years, the quality that MMO's had are being lost each year. Dumbed down and eventually even watered down with content that follows the "quantity > quality". It takes a game like torchlight and fate, neverwinter nights and generally revisiting old classics, to see that "Wow, all I'm doing, is paying every month to stay in a world formed after a threadmill, with classes bland and boring with slow combat so it's balanced for everyone, instead of fast and fun ARPG combat." Sadly its not going to change, hopefully Indie devs continue to save the terminal rpg genre. /un directed rant - Edit: Couldn't agree more with the poster over me. -
I am glad i can still enjoy things in life. I am actually growing along with MMOS and not growing out of them.
Continually dumbed-down, shallow and boring? Hope that works out for you.
Why i feel you have problem with me being happy and enjoying MMOS? misery loves company but no i won't be your buddy in misery. As far as shallow and boring there is enough variety to keep me going. if i want themepark i got games like Rift and Swtor, if i am in mood for sandbox i got Eve Online. if i want a hybrid i can play Fallen Earth. In future games like TSW and Archage will keep things more fresh (hopefully).
So yeah you are wrong bud!
You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty -- Mahatma Gandhi
I won't put all the eggs in the basket of any new MMO, but their seems to be a new design coming, that is more hybrid, than strict themepark in the works. Development cycles in mmos are slow, and mmos take a long time to make....Everyone has been trying to recreate wow, and hopefully it looks like that is changing.
The Secret World - It may or may not be good, but it is more hybrid, it seems.
ArcheAge - More hybrid, with seemingly a lot more of the sandbox in it.
A lot more in development, GW2 seems to be different, still a lot of the norm, but enough that it may be something newer and fresher...
People keep having hopes in the past 5 years or so, but nothing in the past 5 years has been much different than the same junk that has been getting recycled for the most part....Besides indie type companies, but cash/experience usually are their problems.
Maybe you're not growing out of MMO's. Maybe you are maturing either as an individual or as a gamer. If you are maturing as an individual, then I'd be happy for you. On the other hand, if you're maturing as a gamer, life will be hard since the MMO industry isn't mature as of the moment.
- EQ2 - Dumbing down of the game and it being turned slowly into WoW
- WoW - TBC killed it and all my friends left including me
- EVE Online - CCP just haven't done anything worthwhile with the game in years, they're focusing on other BS instead.
Like what have we had to try and replace them over the years? LOTRO, Vanguard, AoC, WAR, RIFT and SWTOR......... all boring generic clones of eachother.
Games like Darkfall and Mortal Online looked like crap ever since the first videos where posted. Even today you cant show me one video that looks good for either of those games. If you had faith in those games afther seeing them then you got what you deserved. ArcheAge is not being made by some indy company that nobody has ever heard of. Jake Song knows mmos and has been doing them for a long time. ArcheAge is the first sandbox mmo that I am actually following and really looking forward to.
I am glad i can still enjoy things in life. I am actually growing along with MMOS and not growing out of them.
Continually dumbed-down, shallow and boring? Hope that works out for you.
Same. The MMOs are just not maturing. Its pretty ironic that single player games(co-op included) have loads more depth than these outrageously hyped MMOs.
I don't have much to add except that I have similar concerns as OP and like many responses I am hoping for ArcheAge to help bring my love of MMORPGs back.
Actually I've been playing some minecraft lately and it has a pretty cool feel to it. It is not massive but that is not what drew me to MMOs anyways... Smaller servers just means a closer knit community. :-) Something to tide you over at least...
Sometimes I wonder if I am growing out of video games entirely. Then I realize that I never really was fit for video games... I am more obsessed with learning about them, comparing them, and thinking about their design than actually playing them. Even the games I've loved the most and spent the most time on I played relatively shortly compared to many gamers... Zelda IV, Soldat, SWG, Planetside.
I have a hard time playing MMOs right now. I played the SWTOR beta for about 2-3 months. As soon as I got my hands on Skyrim though, I pretty much stopped with SWTOR completely. To put it bluntly... I'll take a buggy backwards flying dragon that lasted 3 weeks over kill 10 rats/fetch 10 data cores that lasts a lifetime. Because at the very least, the backwards fyling dragon is funny and entertaining for a short time.
Enter a whole new realm of challenge and adventure.

I agree 100%.
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

I feel for you. Have the same feeling. When it comes to games (especially competitive games), even though I'm usually the first one to try the game or the one with most knowledge about the game, I usually end up being a team's manager/coach. I'm not really a good gamer, but I'm hell obsessed with researching about games and the science behind them.
When it comes to games, I usually talk with my friends, and advise the strongest in our team, and let him or her do the magic. I've been doing the same thing since DotA, then Cabal, then LoL. In all of these games, I've served as the team's or guild's adviser. The only game where I haven't learned so much as a researcher is Hellgate, because of the randomness of the items in-game and the time it needs to learn all builds.
Best thing to do is not put you hope into any games. Wait until at least a week after they release to buy them. This goes for all games. This way if there are any issues other people will find them and you will know before you spend your money. If you aren't being paid to be world first, it doesn't matter when you start playing. The people who get to max level in 3 days are still the same level as the people who get there a month later.
Find other hobbies to occupy your time, keep your eye on games that look interesting, just don't invest yourself in the hype/hope.
definitely agree with you. i played WoW from 2004-2008, quit for college, and tried rift since i thought i could restrain myself from becoming obsessed(i was too addicted to wow previously). after a month of rift, it didn't even interest me. i can't bare to play any mmorpgs, played ToR's beta, couldnt get past level 3 because i was dreadfully bored.
I even re-downloaded WoW to see the graphics in ultra(i bought a new laptop), and couldn't play past level 6. I used to think i would never outgrow mmorpgs, but now i'm almost 22 and i feel there's nothing left for me in that aspect. i don't think i could even bare raiding anymore anyways, i just don't have the time or interest i used to =/
now i'm stuck playing the only games that interest me, bf3, skyrim, fear 3, and a couple xbox 360 games.
I have come to a somewhat sad conclusion, I think I have grown out of the genre of MMO's.
There was a time when I couldn't wait to log in to whatever game I was into at the time, would talk about the game and think game related stuff when I wasn't playing.
Now i just cannot get into any game at all, I have bought every new MMO, in the hopes of catching some of the "fun" I used to have, as well as going back and revisiting ones i had already played. I thought it may be burnout, but have taken many breaks.
TO ME, it just feels like a chore to log in and spend any time in " insert game here "
I wonder if any of you feel the same.
I am currently having more fun learning how to play Chess at the moment.
I kinda feel like i have lost my puppy.....
I came to this realization a few months ago. In general, the genre is not fun. I'd contend most games listed on this site are poorly developed, lack an intuitive interface or are poorly translated. It's like every developer is ignoring obvious problems and it's ruined the genre.
For me, it's the grind, the forced grouping and lack of exploration that did it in for me. The games out there lack the feeling of a world and because that illusion has been shattered, I don't want to grind to max.

It's not you, it's them.
2004 is technically a long time ago now for gaming.
In 8 years I've been engaged, changed jobs 3 or 4 times and went back to school to change my entire career.
But we're still killing 10 gatdam boars, still putting up with 24 other gatdam nerds to raid for the same gatdam magic pants.
The genre needs to grow up with us.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Im subscribed to 4 mmorpg's at the moment.. And that not becuase I play 4 games at one time. Its because I dont get hocked on mmo's like I did before, and I end up quitting after a few days just to jump to the next..
My running sub's are for EQ, EQ2, Vanguard and Anarchy Online. Wonderful memories from all of them, and all of them have made me skip a day or two from work because of lack of sleep..... Weird as it sounds.. I miss that.
Same as the OP, was already done with MMOs and I think counting on new titles are no solution for players like us but old school (I mean really *old* school) titles may be our last retreat. For myself I found this in Asheron's Call: There is nothing that "lures" you into the game, it's a game you have to conquer and its graphics are *far* behind what is standard these days. But the depth of this game is still unrivalled (for an MMO that is) which is well-nigh impossible to see in your first few hours of playing. And depth and replayability is all what counts in the very end, isn't it?
MMOs are just bad right now. Same old same old theme parks they keep pushing out. We need a good sandbox or even a hybrid sandbox/theme park to shake up the genre.

Me too friend. Lately i just cant get into any MMO out there. I think until something that really gets me excited for it comes out ill stick with single player games like Fallout series and Skyrim. Im also really enjoying BF3 at the moment. Its a good game. MMOs are justa ll the same lately.

I will go give Asherons Call another chance right now.. It wasnt the graphic that turned me off last time i tried it. It was the chunky movement :-)
I am not enjoying MMOs right now, but I think it has nothing to do with my age. Most games created today are not my style any more. I've tried SWTOR, paid for the damn thing based on reviews on this site, and it just doesn't do it for me. On the other hand, I've really enjoyed Skyrim.
I can point to the differences between the two games and easily point out what makes me like one and dislike the other. Since SWTOR is as MMOey as the predecessors of the genre I did once like, I'm just not enjoying it. It's saving grace, the decisions you make a la the KOTOR series, are what I like, and that's the defining difference from other MMOs.
I don't know what it'll take for me to get back into the genre, if anything, but for now I'm better off not wasting my money. Wished I had that $60 back right now in fact.

EQ, SWG, PS, EQ2, WoW and EVE Online.
One by one they got ruined;
