Another day and another whiner crying about a mmo, a good mmo that is.
Specialy for a mmo that is 7 days old.
WoW is 7 years old and got time to improve on many many aspects.
SWTOR has just begun and will make it better and better with each patch and expansion.
Just registered to respond to this argument I see posed repeatedly.
I've been playing MMOs at/near endgame "cutting edge guild" since 1995. Name an MMO, I've played it.
Here's something I'll pose for you: when someone comes out with a FPS, do you say "well, halflife had years to upgrade it with half life2 and the episodes?" No. You compare any new FPS game to previously existing games.
SWTOR has so many flaws, missing features, and issues with flow that was solved by games 10-15 years ago. Why should I care that in 7 years it will be a different game, when it is (in my opinion) not up to par with where MMOs were 7 years ago?
I'm interested in any MMO, I play them all. Sometimes I've been duped outright (hellgate), other times I wish company support was there because the game was actually great (Earth and Beyond).
I love and prefer Sci-fi games, but honestly to me this game was way, way below par. Even worse, I feel it sacrificed single-player fun to be able to have this shoehorned MMO experience, and likewise trivialized the MMO aspects by trying to make this engaging for single players.
I am a part of a rather large gaming community, and the concensus is that there just isn't anything to hold the interest with the game, even with promises of new content. The core gameplay is simply lacking and the MMO portions of it feel like afterthoughts.
Mechanics that were solved in MMOs a decade ago have absolutely no business appearing in a next-gen MMO. There is really little or nothing compelling about it as an MMO. The single player experience was "ok" but I felt little or no interest - or even connection - to the starwars I care about.
There are a few innovations here and there, but it really is nothing compelling or even immediately translatable to other MMOs as "something that should be in all MMOs." The crafting system is a hybrid version of Earth and Beyond's, with far too much limitation to be interesting. What if every item in the game was reverse-engineerable if you had the appropriate crafting skill, you could risk the item and perhaps gain a recipe to make a better one? That way, player made items were all the "best" versions. That's what Earth and Beyond had, and it was amazing and made the open world fighting over targets interesting. This had a limited version of it that really didn't matter anyway because in the end you are handed all of the best items and no need to modify them.
If you're enjoying it... great. But I'm not seeing why anyone really enjoys it who's played any number of other MMOs for any amount of time. I've probably played more MMOs that came and went and are cancelled than the fans of this game have played total, so that makes me old and jaded when it comes to features and functionalities that were present in other games a decade ago that are missing in TOR.
Honestly, anyone using the argument that wow had 7 years to change is vastly ignorant. When WoW was released, it destroyed its competition. It stood out as being vastly superior to EQ2 and EQ, DAOC, and all of the other previous MMOs. Now consider its "problematic launch" and you'll see how much of an impact it had.
I don't see how you can say SWTOR has that impact in context of the other MMOs out there. It just doesn't. In a few years "when its better" or whatever you're claiming, there will be other, better, MMOs as well. I don't think its something you can honestly catch up on. If you think that's true, name any MMO that really excelled after a mediocre launch? I can't, and I've played them all.
To answer the question, I really hoped this game would be good. Sci-fi games as well as bioware games (i actually enjoyed the action of dragon age 2 and own all the DLC in spite of their ridiculous steam fallout) are my favorites, and I play and follow MMOs because I'm interested in the designs for massive persistent worlds. And this was maybe a 6/10 at best, with "par" being 7.5.
And that's giving it a pass on all of the ridiculous balance + bugs. Assuming everything was "working 100% with a flawless launch" what else is there is just vapid. I cancelled after hitting max level a week in.
Do younger audiences even give any shit at all about this version of Star Wars (IP wise?) It seems so crappy compared to the original trilogy, I couldn't care less about any of the characters.

To the OP: to pay a sub right now with European critical financial crisis, must really be a very innovated and well made MMO.

loved Earth & Beyond, and i agree with what you said.
I am a huge fan of DAOC; I did not discover mmorpg's until DAOC came out. So I missed UO, EQ, AC, and the oldest games. But DAOC I loved. And I love TOR as well.
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!!!!!
But seriously, You are perhaps confusing personal preference with good game.
I can 'See' quite well thank you.
All games have pro's and cons, even DAOC.
You can certainly say you do not enjoy playing TOR, but to equate disagreeing with you with "Jesus Christ people just take a look it's not that hard to see. " is not reasonable.
What other MMO experience do you have? If you missed the foundations of MMOs, then skip from DAOC to this, I can see that.
But did you play EQ2, Rift, LOTR, Warhammer, Wow, or Conan? You've got quite a gap in your stated experience, and that's ignoring that DAOC was kept afloat by rampant misbalance, ease of botting, and the PVP system... putting it closer to a game of Shadowbane's nature more than any traditional PVE mmo.
I honestly can't see how someone who's always vigorously played MMOs since EQ would think TOR is something good or even unique... It does nothing unique at all. There isn't even a single gameplay construct or system that can't be traced to being better in some other game. The holographic quest turn in / social dialog bit only fixes a system that IT broke, which is the bizarre - arbitrary - storyline collaboration segments. I guess that's interesting, but when I play an evil character and someone else makes good decisions why would I care about that?
That aside, there is absolutely nothing even remotely innovative or new about this game. Not saying there must be in order for it to be good or enjoyable, but I am saying I can't see how anyone with substantial MMO experience would think this game is good.
No, the game's not very innovative at all, but it'll good for a few months of interest. If something comes out that people like better, they probably won't stick with SWTOR, and I honestly don't think it'll be a long-term success. 15 dollars may not be much to some people, but a drain on your bank account for a game you're not playing is still a drain.

Even if something does not come out which is better I bet still people will quit after they played through the class storylines which is interesting to them. Because really, there is not much in this game that is good beside class storylines. The PvP is a joke and the quests are your typical kill this, get that. Flashpoints are the only things that might be interesting but how many of those are there?
No, 2-3 months and this game will be in heavy decline.

Of course there will be a heavy decline, I think it will be alot smaller then you think. I also think it will slowly increase over time, but not sure why I m even saying that since you ve posted, I can t compete with that.
The only reason I'm playing is for story, as long as that keeps me interested I'll be subbing.
^This! I have to say i toggled chat off and play it like a Singleplayer with good story. Thats the game for me and as long as i feel entertained i keep paying.

I don't know about you but I find few single player games these days last me a whole month before I'm ready to move on - some even ask me to pay the equivalent of a month's MMO fee for some DLC...

Playing MMOs 'solo' can be good value.
VERY good point Teilo!
Hell, most single player games can be beaten in a weekend. Hardly a "value" at $60 + DLC 3 months later.
The game is decent as a free to play type game. But it is not an mmo its more of a single player RPG with some chat thrown in. Who is actually willing (Be honest) to pay $15 dollars a month for a game not worth one penny???
NO ONE!
Oh, unless you count the 2 million + current subscribers. But besides that handful of people, NO ONE.
Oh, and me and everyone I know who has an IQ over 50. But besides that...
NO ONE
xion was clearly asking who was willing to pay the subscription price.
First month isn't up yet. Thus, no one has paid for a subscription yet.
Therefore, your basing your post on false information, which makes your post false.

Glad to know i'm not alone <--- get it. lol
Yeah I've been playing totally solo, i too hit the "Other" chat tab block out everyone and have fun, the fact that others are running around in my instance negates the lonely feel, it adds life to the game. Having the option to group or read chat is well, a nice option I'm not really using atm.
Yamota of course i do, you obviously haven't read any of my past emails i was so negative about this game and mostly because i knew it was going to be a single player game with a monthly fee, but Bioware pulled it off, it's enjoyable and as long as I'm having fun...
I don't know where you guys come up with this single player stuff, from the time I log on I'm chatting, raiding, warzoning and doing things with my guild and friends. Don't y'all have any friends? Or do you want a computer to find a group/ raid for you like WoW? And yes, I'll gladly pay $15 a month for this because I've paid $15 per month for EQ1 for 11 years and this game is much better.
If I wanted to play a linear game full of cut-scenes I'd play any of Biowares single player games...no need to pay $15 a month for the bs. I'd take a Rockstar game anyday over Biowares crap they put out. A shame so many people gave into the sceme and paid full price for TOR lol. EA and Bioware are cashing in bigtime :-)

Good games can last ages, and you do not have to buy the DLC. DLC is like F2P. If you want it, you buy it. With monthly subs you are paying for whatever they dish out, even if you do not want it. Also if you enjoy the games then you keep and play them later. By the time people would like to play TOR again, it willl probably be shut down. If you do want to play the game again while it is active you have to pay to sub to it again, whereas single player non monthly fee games you do not.
All other MMOs are worthy of having the monthly fee, they have enough game elements to warrant the fee. MMOs are meant to be multiplayer games not single player games
It all depends on what they add to the game later will really be if it is worth the monthly fee or not. If it is just the stories and not going to enhance space, add in a Beast Master system, story creation system or whatever, it is not going to be worth it. If it is just adding in more story based quest I would rather just pay for the stories when ready to play them, and finishing what is already in game.
I mean *big* subscription MMO's in general on this site are called trash anyway. One might conclude that "those people" thus are not on this site so we can't have much more than a 1 sided discussion.
I mean beside the normal... supporter will be called a fanboi.. anyone pointing out anything negative will be a hater discussions that we have here.

Its bc you have a portion of the game that is your "personally" story so everyone clings to that as a way to try to bring down the game.
Last night we did the world boss on Belsavis, we had 16 people in group. When we got there we encountered 4 or so imps that turned into about a group of 20 trying to keep up from doing the world boss. We organized a group together, and the imps organized one to spoil our plans. Eventually we pushed them back enough and broke their spirits and we downed the boss. It was a lot of fun. The spontaneous world pvp was a blast. It made downing the boss all the more rewarding.
Haven't really had group world pvp like that since SWG.
The point is the game is far from single player and its worth the $15 a month to me.

And it's a real shame so many want to play an MMO solo. While you CAN solo most of SWTOR, you're a fool to. I'm grouped no less than 90% of the time doing everything from class quests to Heroics...to skip those is shamefull.
The only reason I'm playing is for story, as long as that keeps me interested I'll be subbing.

Also thats my point, the most immersion breaking thing in swtor are .. other players. I hate reading their rubbish in gerneral, teamin with 'stupidnames-with-sad-behaviour'. I used to do that in your average-grind-mmos since there is nothin immersive anyway. Killing XP-bags to grab new gear to kill bigger xp-bags with bigger numers.
This kind of game tho , story, interactive cutscenes, like reading a good book or watching your favourite TV show after a days work. THATs what makes swtor special.
And if they keep it coming at the quility so far deliverd, i will tune in every evening till i need a break. Its just a whole diffrent way of playing.
IF i want to share my game experience with someone (RL friends) its like a big LAN game, Multiplayer MASS Effect. that sort of thing.

"I play Tera for the gameplay"

It doesn't really matter who...
Thats well worth my 15.
