I mean ok , there is certain hypocrysy at nudity / erotic especially in US, but showing cheap things like Kabod Online. Please - this "erotic" have ZERO taste and is targetted at young 13 year old boys.
Everyone could be running naked in Vindictus and I would still play the game, because the combat is miles ahead of the Western games atm. [...]
Err, so what ?
Thats not what the topic of the thread is.
We dont discuss if we would still would play the game we play if everyone would run around naked. Those games have values beyond visual, obviously, otherwise one doesnt continue to play. Visuals alone are only amazing for so long, and MMOs are VERY longtime games.
I mean ok , there is certain hypocrysy at nudity / erotic especially in US, but showing cheap things like Kabod Online. Please - this "erotic" have ZERO taste and is targetted at young 13 year old boys.
Then you dont have to buy or play them. Its very simple.
Nobody said so.
But what im getting at is its always the same comment. "I DONT WANT THESE THINGS IN MY MMO" So if you dont want to play MMOs that have those features then dont. Play something else. Stop trying to make ALL games the way YOU want them to be. As if YOUR the only one playing them.
Another comment on the sex vs violence bit that I forgot to make earlier:
If some malevolent person/group/entity is trying to conquer/destroy the world and you have to kill it to stop it, then that intrinsically involves some violence. That doesn't necessarily mean over the top blood squirting everywhere and body parts falling off violence. But it does mean one character whacking another with a sword, shooting with a gun, or whatever. It's intrinsic in the nature of the game. Sexuality isn't intrinsic to the nature of most games.
It seems to me like you (and alot of others in this thread) are confusing nudity with sex.
Sexuality isn't intrinsic to the nature of most games.
Thats kinda the point here isn't it though? That the games are designed to be violent, but not designed to show sexuality, thats something they just slap on the graphical part. In an adult MMO sexuality could be a part of the game, part of the story. But most games today are not designed that way, they are designed to be played by anyone over the age of 12 and then they just put some boobs in there and call it mature.
They aren't even beating around the bush anymore, they're straight up throwing softcore porn into their games with Soul Calibur type armor destruction, now here's my question:
I won't lie, Aion was a screw up but the closest thing to an Western MMO. I play Eastern MMOs for graphics and community but truth be told prefer Western MMO mechanics (namely, World of Warcraft as nearly all Western games have their combat system, and quest systems based on World of Warcraft).
What's up with NA as a whole? I don't think EU has a problem with "adult centric" MMOs (Age of Conan), but it seems like everyone in NA is afraid of bikini plate, wants "realism" (magic is realism amirite), or are just insecure about females running around in S&M suits dominating the battlefield.
Your thoughts?
EDIT: Forgot something, for a nation who's pronographic industry rivals Japans, and porn's technology is usually advanced by a few years versus general internet (only to be advanced by the army)...why is the community so hostile to sex?
Posters on an MMO forum are not a viable sample of "everyone in NA." That aside, the answer is ridiculously obvious even with the most minute bit of research.
In NA, adult vidoes are not commonly watched (didnt say not ever, but that wont stop the 'Wrong. I do!' replies) with one's wife or significant other. MMO gamers that have a wife or significant other often play MMOs with them or have their gaming computers in the same room. It's not that difficult to figure out.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

American MMOs seem to be bound by the idea that they need to be G rated. Or technically "teen" rated, or whatever rating system is popular these days. I've never understood why though. Lots of games are more adult oriented, and seem to do fine in sales. What makes MMOs so different? If anything, they appeal to adults more, not less..
and by "adult oriented" I don't even mean softcore porn or anything. Just as much sex and violence as you might see in.. almost every other genre. Or Asian MMOs, or AoC. (@Loktofeit - I played AoC and Aion with my GF extensively, and it was never a problem. I can't imagine why it would be.)
Even TOR, with its Sith Lords that remind of Ned Flanders on a bad day, or the complete absence of the sort of lightsaber violence that was in the movies. and armor that sticks a little too closely to head to toe coverage, when sci-fi is one setting where armor is more about energy shields, and not old fashioned platemail, which wouldn't do much of anything against rocket launchers, anyhow. Just seems wierd to me. Who are they trying to appease, that other genres don't have to worry about?
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
It seems to me like you (and alot of others in this thread) are confusing nudity with sex.

Sexuality isn't what makes a game "mature". It most definitely doesn't reflect maturity in players (AoC is a shining example of immature nudity).
Nudity thrown into most (not all, but most) games is usually done so just for the sake of doing so, not because it's a natural part of the game. This makes it a bit out of place in most games, and is what makes games like Oneechanbara are so awkward and cheesy. Trying to force nudity where it doesn't naturally belong only brings down the quality of a game.

Most yanks seems to think that violence is fine for kids but nuditty is only allowed for adults.
Personally I don't care if there is nudity in a game or not, and I don't care about violence in them either, it is just a game. I don't even care if the game have drugs in them either, I wont go out killing, raping or smoking crack because I can do it in a game if I want to...
Difficulty is another thing that often is on debate, many say that adult games is harder but I wasn't that old when I got my first C-64 and the games I played (and played well) on it was a lot harder than anything you can find today.
The whole "adult" discussion is just because Yanks and people from South Korea have different views on nudity.
What is adult however is a really creepy story. You could make a Call of Cthulhu MMO that would scare the crap out of most kids and many adults as well. I don't think anyone would get nightmares from anything in a regular MMO but from a real adult game you could. And I am not just talking about bloody violence alá AoC here but the stuff that makes people in a theatre scream.
No one seemed to have a problem with this back in the day did they. Was a child at the time but I don't remember anyone complaining lol.
This was a very popular game, and I know you could play it on an arcade machine too, and kids played it back in the day on those machines, with the same picture!

It's a bit different. The artwork on the box is just a picture. Ingame graphics those days weren't very real. These days, it looks and sounds like human characters.
I kinda enjoy nudity in games, but not just for the sake of nudity or sex appeal. It has to have meaning, not just be thrown in there. I kinda take offense in the chainmail bikini things that we get because it just serves no purpose to me. We've got a weird bunch that makes the rules here... we have freedom, but only as much as those in office deem appropriate.
Not commonly watched? LOL
Please, for the love of God, google American pornography industry statistics LOL
What side of the world are you living on? LOL Seriously, I can't stop laughing at you. If this were a China based forum I'd understand but in America? Okay, wait, I know what your argument might be: ppl buy porn but don't watch it.

Look at that top 10 list though. Tera and Blade&Soul? The idea that they're pornographic is just sensationalism. We're just talking revealing outfits, for the most part. Nothing that partners would be ashamed to play together, or anything like that.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
It's not a surprise really. With hundreds of MMOs coming out every year over there, they're looking for every possible way to outdo each other. It's obvious that sex sells in advertisements... so how do you outdo a character showing a good amount of skin? Have yours show more. And it continues until every character has a micro-bikini on. Eventually nudity will probably become okay. Once that happens, you'll have MMOs with no gear and everyone running around naked all the time.
